    Kudos to Linus for being open-minded and taking the plunge. The fact that he's willing to ditch his preconceptions is a good indicator that he's growing as a reviewer. I prefer Windows for its customisation, tweaking and compatibility benefits, I think OS X is prettier, more intuitive, and cuts through a lot of the crap that average people aren't interested in. Fuck Mac if you're planning to game or run obscure/niche applications though. It just doesn't make sense.
    Best compromise? Build your own machine that can do a triple-boot of Windows, OS X and Linux (any distro). If you want simplicity and aren't looking to do anything super in-depth, boot up OS X. If you want advanced settings, customisation, tweaking or gaming, then go for Windows. If you fancy a bit of experimentation with programming or are looking for a learning experience, fancy a change, or don't want to give money to evil corporations, then go Linux.
    I've gone a bit mental with my operating systems, to be honest. At the moment, I have an SSD for booting Windows and use a 3TB WD Black for Windows storage exclusively, a 2TB WD Black, which I run OS X from and use for storage. A 1TB WD Blue, which I partitioned 70/30 and run both Ubuntu and Arch Linux on respectively. Finally, only last week, I bought a cheap Seagate 500GB HDD to try Windows 10 on. The joys of a big case with lots of SATA ports on the mobo! :D

    On top of that you can't replace a single fucking component.

      i actually haven't used a .net application in years after switching to OS X/ubuntu.... and i actually think that any os that doesn't support a native unix like command line, to be inferior to the ones who do (namely every os that is not windows). also the base model has a 4690 in it. how is it laptop grade when the tdp of the processor is 84W. as for being slow, of course it doesn't have enormous power, the majority of the money goes to the screen (ever seen how much a 4k/5k IPS panel cost).
      You may not like a mac, and that is your choice, but without objectively quantifying the significance of apple computers isn't a solution. For instance, I don't like paying $1600 for my laptop either (its a macbook pro), but OS X is an integral part of my workflow as a developer, and the costs isn't really that bad (for comparison i dumped nearly $3k on my windows gaming computer, and there are still some things i prefer work on my laptop).

    I don't understand why Apple products get so much hate... Are you guys simply fanboys of other companies? Apple makes great products, deal with it. I use an Android phone, which I love, and an iPad Mini, which I prefer over a Nexus. I like both of the devices. I had an iPhone, and I loved it. I have a Kindle Fire HD, it sucks. It's good for reading books. Does that make me hate the Kindles and Amazon? No. I am eagerly waiting for them to release a product worth buying. I am interested in Amazon Echo. Can't we all just live in peace and respect each others opinion? Well, of course we can't, this is the internet -_- At least stop hating Apple. And Apple fanboys stop hating everyone else.

    • @niallmul97

      Here in a nutshell is why I hate Apple, and honestly its not their fault but their fanboy's!
      Being a gamer I built a gaming pc as did a few of my friends, but one guy said why would you get a pc, mac is way better? Knowing full well he was just a fanboy, we asked him to explain why mac is "way better". His best argument was that macs cost more and that the last time he used windows it was slow (like, what does that even mean?). He spent 3k on his mac and we tried to explain for probably about half the price you could build a pc that would out perform it. We asked him what he actually does with his mac. His response? "Work"... we were 15 (not that 15 y/o's can't work and stuff). He also refused to elaborate on what he meant by "work". His final response "you're just jelly that you can't afford it!" So we asked how he could afford so. "My parents bought it for me". And once again "jelly..."
      Its these fans that just buy apple products because the're made by apple, the majority of these don't even know what their shiny new product can actually do, all they know is that its cool to own one and that's all that seems to matter to the majority of these fanboys.

    • @sluggdiddyyddidgguls
      @sluggdiddyyddidgguls Před 9 lety +24

      I personally don't like apple as company, I think they treat consumers like idiots a lot of the time. They do generally make good products, good looking products, well built ones for the most part, and their user interfaces are easy to understand. But I just really think they are way over priced for what they are, and the very closed system they operate in just makes me uncomfortable.Anyways that aside, I think a lot of the hate comes from the overpriced aspect. I totally conceded that their design and built quality deserves a decent markup over just the bare labor and parts..But they just get greedier and greedier with that markup every year (at least on their computer stuff). I think a lot of the hate is based around this aspect of apple. The notion that you can get a pc that is just as powerful for typically less than half the cost. Again, their r&d and built quality do warrant a increased expense but.. they just take it way too far. The only real valid justification for someone preferring mac is the user experience and look...but people that prefer macs..have a hardtime admitting for whatever reason (probably because of the amount of money spent). And that refusal to admit that...and their attempts to try to talk about speed or "power" of the pc..is what just sets the whole discussion on fire.
      This is not me blaming the mac crowd, that is not my aim..I am just saying that is where I tend to see things get heated. And I am not really talking about the "extreme fanboys" of either side...those people don't bother me much as they exist for every thing out there in the world (mac vs pc fanboys have nothing on sports related fanboys by a long shot), they are easy to drown out at this point. I'm talking about the people who generally are honestly engaging in a debate about the merits of both pc and mac.

  • @AliciaBurrito
    @AliciaBurrito Před 9 lety +34

    The actual reason for 5K is to keep the same scaling as the previous iMac since a 4K iMac would be scaled to 1080p unlike the 1440p scaling for 5K. No other exotic reason really.

      So you cannot actually set the resolution above 1440p?

    • @AliciaBurrito
      @AliciaBurrito Před 9 lety +11

      I'll explain the specifics of how it works. OS X does some very smart scaling for their Retina line of computers. They run at a dynamically scaled resolution... sort of. It only renders elements on-screen that would benefit from increased detail like an image for example, while text, menu bar, context menu, etc. simply run at a scaled 1440p resolution. That way it keeps performance up while still being just as crisp if it were natively at 5K at all times.

    The grass is greener here on the Mac side. If you REALLY think you need a PC, dual boot the Mac and run Windows on a partition. Also, once you learn to use the Magic Mouse, you'll never want to use another mouse for a daily driver. I'd love to have that 5K display, but I'm not due to get another Mac for about 4 more years. Macs also last about twice as long as a PC IMO.

    This isn't really overpriced to all the people who say it is. 5K is a lot of money currently so they include a nice and cheap computer with it. The only bad thing about this is how you can't use it as a standalone monitor. To gamers, yes Macs are bad for gaming but that doesn't mean it's not practical. Yes, most Macs are very expensive but people who buy the most expensive ones can justify the cost easily for using it for multiple years since there aren't as many viruses on it (there is malware for anything you csn download stuff onto and if someone doesn't think so they are just plain wrong).

    I have no issues using Apple when they're provided for school or work or whatever, I'd never buy one myself though. It's not even a question of price, it's a question of Apple being such control freaks over hardware. What I love most with my Thinkpad is that if something goes wrong I can research the issue myself, fieldstrip it myself, fix the problem myself, and put everything back together without a hitch myself - even upgrade or mod stuff myself, if I want. If I had a Macbook and something cocked up I'd have to go through -20 degree weather to Temple, visit the Genius Bar priest, pay my tithe to the ghost of Steve Jobs, and receive their official sanctioned response from on high. Thank you Linus, for not only putting your self out of your comfort zone to test this and give balanced criticism instead of just going 'MAC SUX ITS EXPENSIVE AND PC IS CHEAPER AMIRITE GUISE' like many, many angry people in the comments. I applaud you for doing thourough, objective reviews of products instead of just going 'I don't like this brand so who cares'.
    Thanks for bringing up how 'Good value' is entirely subjective. I currently am using a pair of jvc triple x bass or something headphones that cost me £10 and are perfectly adequate for my needs. I have a friend who bought some seinheiser IE 8i headphones for £280 because he likes listening to high qaulity sound files on the go and is much more into music fidelity then I am. I'd never spend that much on headphones, as for the music I listen to those headphones would not be good value but he loves them and to him they are great value. I'm happy with my choice and he is happy with his.
    So why can't people just accept that people buy macs because they look nice or because they like the os, or the screen or the form factor or the etc? Just because you don't find it good value does not mean that no one else does.
    Tl;DR People can buy whatever they want for whatever reason they want. Get over it.

      I know this post is ancient, but as a Mac user since the public beta of OS X, when I switched due to my Linux / FreeBSD irritation to OS X and was shocked that a company had finally made Unix beautiful and easy to use, I am definitely a Mac user. (Not a fan boy who has to buy every latest Apple gadget, though... I still have an iPad 2 that works perfectly fine and just picked up.a refurb iPhone 11.)
      As a software developer, I really dislike Windows. I dislike the UI, the methodology of installing / uninstalling apps, and many other things. I am a gamer, and I do play some games (particularly visual novels) on my Mac, but for most gaming, I prefer consoles since they are a standardized experience, and I find most modern gaming PCs to be tacky with all their glowing keyboards and transparent cases.
      I mean, hey, if Windows satisfies your needs, I'm not trying to deter you from using it. I just don't like it. The last versions of Windows that I didn't find horrific in terms of UI were XP and 7.

      That may be true but considering this thing has a 5k display in it (the only other comparable option is a Dell 5k monitor that also costs $2500) it's really not a bad deal to be honest.

    • @hellseagle21
      @hellseagle21 Před 9 lety +3

      strikewolf42 That is true, but what are you going to do on that 5k display? The iMacs are Apple's consumer brand, so what are most consumers going to do? Well consumer media of course. Really with those specs powering a 5k display, it's no like you can do any work on it anyways. I really wish that Apple just released the display separately, that way people with actual workstations and professional grade hardware could actually use the high resolution display the way it is meant to be used. Really video editing wouldn't even be to well on this thing, and it's not like some light workload like Photoshop or a photographer could really use this thing since the glossy display creates over-saturated colors more than accurate ones, and there's no pivot or anything.

    Linus made a really good point in this video (Yes I know old video). A lot of gaming setups do look not cheap but not luxurious either. A lot of higher end pc stuff like keyboards and mice and stuff everything is lit up with flash rgb lighting. Which is fine. But the options when it comes to things looking that little bit luxurious are minimal. I applaud Inwin for making some very very nice looking luxurious pc cases so people are doing it.
    What I am getting at is, there are PC users who want a custom PC but one that looks just that little bit luxurious, say for in a design studio, or a professional work space.
    What I mean is there are millions of custom PC's out there that look like they jumped out of a fast and the furious movie the way they are lit up, but for someone who wants say the styling of a rolls royce options are much much less.

      3.You want something else fine I think Apple is a dick to all the other companies like intel, AMD, samsung etc.They all create new things for us everybody to use including apple but apple just sort of throws a temper tantrum and sues someone for "copying their ideas"
      4. Imacs, macs etc. Are pretty much completely enclosed you can't do anything with them its like a console that you have to replace if you want to keep up and don't give me that "windows slows down after awhile crap" just do a defrag a pc clean up and you should be fine. If you build your own pc you can just pop out the old part and put a new one in and you're good to go

      I only use OS X for a very short period of time, but from my experience for windows all these years, it is quite frustrating to use. Even with the latest OS, 8.1, the "windows explorer" is still a thing, on a not bad hardware platform. A lot of other small but frustrating problem too. Like MS word not responding during changing fonts, latest patch won't work, but previous one works instead (what?), etc.

      I jacked my MacBook's SSD up trying to repartition my hard drive after uninstalling Linux Mint, I had to do a complete wipe and reinstall. After the reinstall I restored from backup, and literally, 1 hour later, every single file, application, folder, configuration, calendar, mail, saved browser passwords, bookmarks, 3rd party window snap management software, music file, wallpaper, photo's, word document, python program, excel spreadsheet, powerpoint... everything was back in it's right place. It's like nothing ever happened. One of the perk's of OS X's and Apple's ecosystem is that issues, on the rare occasion that they occur, can be easily corrected. My mother could have done a Time Machine backup restore, it was that easy. OS X is extremely user friendly.

    I suppose Windows vs OS X resolution handling would be a good topic to talk about. To be honest, I think OS X is a lot more well suited on laptops. Mission Control helps you make the most out of smaller resolution displays (which is extremely helpful). Handoff, automatic internet tethering, and making/receiving calls and (actual) texts on your laptop are extremely useful when you are on the go. And the trackpad gestures help streamline the whole OS X experience. Though for desktops, I do prefer windows.

    The amount of hate in the comments and the rating bar really shows how fucking immature this community is at times. Sure, feel free to hate Apple and their products, it's your opinion and thats it. The absolute toxicity of this community is what fucking gets me. Why does it matter if he reviews a iMac? It's called Linus *TECH* Tips, not Linus _PCAndroid_ Tips. It's a computer, thus a piece of tech, so he can review it at his own will. Everyone just needs to take a step back and just get along with each other.

    UNIGINE HEAVEN! That is, of course, designed to test gaming graphics performance. However, I think such graphics benchmarks would give us a great idea of the machine's potential.

    For the mic part about not being able to put one in the headphones jack, you can plug 2 in 1 earphones in it, like the apple ear pods or something like that, and use it like a microphone

    Keep in mind that using a single tile means that the current Thunderbolt on the iMac and the Mac Pro means that it can't be used as a monitor, even if it were external. While a refresh is probably going to be coming soon with changes both to the Cinema Display, iMac, and Mac Pro, until that happens, there's a reason we haven't seen an external 5K display from Apple.
