@@Dyundu What RPG system do you run?
And, yeah, even a pair of Defenders(legends or canon) would be a brutal force multiplier. Canon Defenders are on par or greater than an T-65 X-wing and probably could take on a capital ship with only a squadron of them. No wonder the First Order used some of the tech when building the SF Tie and the Silencer(which is also known as the TIE/vn Vendetta, which is an awesome name).
Imagine a Raider and Defenders just tracking down and eliminating rebel cells and warships. That would be such a cool hook for a plot.

@@BoisegangGaming I run the original WEG Star Wars d6 system that was the basis for the pre-Prequels EU (yes, there should be a distinction--there were tons of resets and retcons in the old canon after 1999, mostly for the better, I think). Specifically 2e.
Totally agreed. The TIE Defender is a beast of a fighter, irrespective of which canon is being discussed. I'm already drawing up plans/characters/etc for Artemis Squadron. Thank you very much for the inspiration!
And yeah, I love the TIE Silencer. I like to think (though I know it's probably wrong) that the /vn is a nod to the old TIE Avenger (though in its game series, same series that brought us the original TIE/D in fact, it was originally just called the TIE Advanced, and was supposed to be the mass-production run after Vader's prototype). The TIE Avenger is still my favorite TIE to this day.

I am getting to the end of my current campaign (FFG EotE) and one of the campaigns I am considering next is an Inferno Squad inspired Imperial campaign (with an explicit your characters have to be ride or die Imperial, no defecting) where they would eventually be able to get a Raider. I was going to offer them a choice of refit for a shuttle bay, hanger for two small fighters (Tie/LNs), or a light vehicle bay. The problem with Defenders is they do take up slightly more room then a Tie, and most sources are explicit that the hanger refit is only good for two small craft.

    • @andreasmuller4666
      @andreasmuller4666 Před 4 lety +8

Retractable weapon systems only make sense in a very specific weight/seize relation in regards to the ship and weapon in use. Is the ship to small it´s a waste of mass for all the motors and recesses instead of just putting it in or on the hull. Is the weapon to big, once again it´s a waste of mass/volume to have it retractable at all.

Which rules out about every warship and fighter ever put on screen in Star Wars. Really good warship design is done in the Honor Harrington book series, most other stuff falls dreadfully short of that standart.

While we only see two TIE's deployed from the Raider in game, I would image it could have a max capacity of three, maybe four fighters considering the Empire's policy of overwhelming numbers and force in most situations.
To back this up, at it's height, Inferno Squad had 4 members, each could (in theory and if we take the X-Wing Miniatures Game into account) pilot a TIE. Considering the Corvus has a bridge crew that we see in game, it would seem silly to give a ship with a compliment of only two fighters to a team of four. I'd image they'd give them a ship that could, if needed, support them all flying TIEs into a battle or into deployments. Just my own thoughts though.
    Great video as always
EDIT: Just realized that the opening of Battlefront II depicts Inferno squad leaving Endor in TIE Fighters, so unless they jettisoned one into space, the Raider should be able to maintain at least 3 fighters of TIE/LN size (in my opinion at least)

The optimal defense force for a small convoy was a single Raider matched with a pair of Gozanti-class fighter transports. The tactic was simple-at the beginning of the battle the Raider would position itself on the same side of the column of transports as the enemy fighters. The Gozanti would move to the rear, and deploy their fighters on the side of the column opposite the attacking fighters (ie with the column between the TIEs and the enemy ships). The strength of the Rebel X and Y wings was in the high speed pass. A low speed attack left the fighters vulnerable so even lightly armed transports could badly damage them. The Rebel fighters were thus forced to run the gauntlet of the Raider's substantial defenses, try to reorganize for an attack, and then after making their pass would immediately be swarmed by the TIEs, which would usually be able to get into optimal attack position and do considerable damage. If the Rebels tried to attack the column head on the Raider was fast enough to reposition, and if they went to the rear they would have to brave the defenses of the two Gozanti transports, which themselves were not inconsiderable.
Tactics like these forced the Rebels to innovate, employing various types of mines and weapons with longer reach. Another counter was to use right-left attacks. Essentially the attackers break into two forces and made the Raider commit to stopping one, while the second group would carry through with their attack. The first group would then disengage and the Raider would either have to leave it's post in pursuit, or watch them reorganize. In general the Rebels were able to keep the initiative, but attrition levels were always alarming when Raiders became involved.

The Corvus is a raider 2 class corvette and that's why it has a hangar bay. Also the hangar bay can store 8 tie fighters surprisingly. I found a model of the Corvus's hangar bay in the battlefront 2 game files and it clearly has racks for 8 normal tie fighters.

    • @VegetaLF7

Reminds me of the Legends modified Corellian Corvette "Night Caller" from the X-Wing books. A basic Corellian Corvette but with an attached bow-oriented hangar bay capable of docking 9 X-Wings in a 3x3 pattern (after the racks were installed, of course) and the escape pod ports were replaced with Gozanti-style TIE docking rings to dock an additional pair of TIEs. Used to great effect by Wraith Squadron in the book of the same name.

While I dislike one size fits all ships (looking at you battleship/carrier/colony ship monstrosities), I di really enjoy the idea of a small ship that has versatility through modular design. Having hard points that could be swapped out for additional anti-fighter, anti-ship weaponry, scanning arrays, cloaking and so on is really smart to me and I think so much better.

Can you do a piece on the U.S.S. Ares from the Star Trek fan film, Prelude to Axanar? It's also a ship that deviated from the usual design doctrine, in that it's a dedicated warship instead of the well rounded designs of most Star Fleet ships. The only other example I can think of is the U.S.S. Defiant, which you already did a video on.
