    Build a super powerful ship to serve as your flagship, and give it a weapon that basically makes it unbeatable in capital ship combat. Then let it operate all alone with no escort fleet. No wonder the separatists lost.

      At least the ship that appeared in in the TV show wanted to stay undetected since it was still unknown for the Republic. That's the reason why they always tried to kill all survivers in the escape pods. A big support fleet would hinder that. The rest was grivious incompetence.

    • @aethertech
      @aethertech Před 4 lety +15

      Star Wars starship classifications are wack, without a doubt. But a Star Destroyer CAN be a heavy cruiser, and also be larger than (other/most) Heavy Cruisers. E.g. The Imperial - Class Star Destroyer is more of a Battleship-Carrier-Assault Transport hybrid, while the Victory-class fits more along the actual Heavy Cruiser, or Battle Cruiser roll. Star Destroyer can really just reefer to a ship that eschews the classical cylindrical form of design, and takes on the primordial design to provide substantial increase in surface area, and internal volume over similar 'sized' (length) ships.
      Almost all capital ships in SW used cylindrical, or narrow rectangular design philosophies. Star Destroyers use the pyramidal/dagger design. (and there are exceptions to each.....)
      But really, a Star Destroyer is a top-tier ship-of-the-line is what it really comes down to.
      Or it can just be a purely psychological name and have nothing at all to do with the ship's actual capability (e.g. Gladiator - class, Aggressor - class, Interdictor - Class, and maybe others.
      I once tried to apply logic to Star Wars .... ( www.reddit.com/r/SciFiDesigns/comments/ezxqw4/unified_classification_guide_for_warships_star/ )

      @AKUJIRULE Ok buddy slow your roll. First of all I wasn't "bitching" about older ships. I respect the Hood and the Iowa and any warship that served it's country as well as they did. But the fact is hood's engine were in a state of disrepair when she fought Bismark and she still hadnt recieved the additional top armor that might have saved her despite that refit. Also I said british battleships didn't I? Hood was a battlecruisers, they arent supposed to be able to beat battleships let alone be more heavily armored then them. Without even mentioning her age. Then theres the fact that Hood was only one of what? Three BCs in service with the Royal Navy? And the only one of her class at that? She's obviously an exception, even if I wasnt refering to British battleships specifically. And theres more to armor then just the belt thickness, layout and coverage are arguably more important, and British BCs are famous for having poor armor layouts. And if the Iowa, in her old age, was sunk by a DDG or a land launched missle or something i would argue the same for her.

    Once again invoking the proud Star Wars tradition of sending out a super weapon/ship without a escort fleet*
    Imagine one of these in the battle of Corescant (as long as it didn't friendly fire it's own sides ships, or at least too many of it's ships).
    They have the facilities to coordinate a battle group, but never have a battlegroup.
    If they were the centerpiece of a whole fleet/taskforce, the other ships could provide cover during the charging phase and take advantage of the stunned ships afterwards, then it's effectiveness would be even greater. Especially as it's mere presence would force GAR ships to not bunch up in order to not present a juicy target, they would have to spread out there forces making them more vunerable to conventional ships.
    And they sent out the first one unguarded, giving the GAR a chance to learn about it and destroy it. Besides which it was just killing individual ships and small fleets, not inflicting a strategic defeat. Did it even kill enough enemy shipping to cover it's own cost?
    It's the tired old _big bad ship_, trope.
    *If the second Death Star had survived, when completed would it have also been sent out without a escort fleet?

It makes perfect sense in-world for them to try and look and sound as evil as possible.

    • @Klipik12

Since their entire army was droid-based and their leader was basically just an aristocrat (since no one knew he was a sith), and they had the backing of a bunch of huge, well-funded corporations, it didn't seem evil at least on the surface.

When she fired her guns for the first time, the shockwave alone knocked out her forward radar. Her guns were also arranged in an outdated and inefficient manner. Plus, her armor scheme didn’t provide too much protection anywhere beyond her citadel. Then, there was her low endurance. Her American counterparts like USS North Carolina could’ve eaten her for breakfast.

    I'd have this ship design as my flagship bit with the ion cannone on the front to make the ship appear like a forward attack ship and the forward heavy cannons would wipe the fleets out. The ships sides would be heavily armoured but still have cannons for fighter attacks and cargo holds for my fighters. Though the command post would be hidden to make sure that if one was damaged the other would keep the ship operational. Plus I would have a support fleet when I use it on full hostile invasion.

    Another weakness: the ion cannons can only be fired in broadside. Some creative formations and maneuvering by an enemy admiral could make them a non-factor.

    • @kevingriffith6011
      @kevingriffith6011 Před 5 lety

      That kind of depends on the range of the weapon. In close combat I completely agree, but the further out you get the less that matters.

    • @wargearinternational7679
      @wargearinternational7679 Před 5 lety

      The range of this ion cannon seems impressive. They appear to have a range far above that of a Venator, which was its main adverserie. The ship also turns rather fast for its size. And lets not forget the 1000 turbo lasers, that would be able to deal with small republic fleet by itself.

    • @GarlicPudding
      @GarlicPudding Před 5 lety

      wargearinternational It's impressive...IF you're in its firing arc. Stay out of that, and its range is a moot point. I'll concede on its conventional weapons, though.

    • @kevingriffith6011
      @kevingriffith6011 Před 5 lety

      @@GarlicPudding Well, the problem is that most of the time the further away you are from something, the harder it is to stay out of it's firing arc, since a 10 degree turn might not mean much at two kilometers, but at ten thousand then it's a completely different story.
      If you're able to exit hyperspace extremely close to the ship then you can render it moot... otherwise you'll have to spread your fleet out quite thin to ensure that it can only eliminate one ship at a time, but that itself brings problems, like your ships being unable to support eachother against whatever escort fleet is with the subjugator.

    I see a lot of the Subjugator in the Raddus/MC85 cruiser, i.e. the 'mouth' at the bow and smoother Quarren features. I think that is meant to represent the evolution of Mon Cal cruiser design in line with the Mon Calamari and Quarren uniting during the Clone Wars, and how their aesthetics have come to complement one another in ship design. I'm curious to see where this will go, possibly in the form of the MC90, or even a Star Defender if they're feeling generous

  • @MrMarinus18
    @MrMarinus18 Před 3 lety

    I think with massive ships like these that are build in very low numbers they are all somewhat unique. Of course they are build to general specifications but they all would likely incorporate small improvements or have a few construction flaws. Also have slightly different lay-outs.
    Real battleships also had this.
