      I agree, and I’d love to see what these bad boys could do with a proper refit. Smaller crew-requirements and better computer systems, modern weapons systems with a balanced loadout, improved shields, engines, and armor. Hell, add in a small hangar bay to fit a squadron or two of reliable snub-fighters. Even without the hangar bay, partner this ship with a squadron each of hyperspace-capable snubfighters, interceptors, and bombers. I’m thinking something along the lines of X-Wings, A-Wings, and Y-Wings.

    This ship is a magnificent example of how well EU/ Legends works were connected with each other by the continuity. The Dreadnought was introduced in the Thrawn Trilogy in the 1990s, being mentioned as ancient ships used during the then unexplored Clone Wars. What happened when the Clone Wars were finally shown in the prequels yearsv ater? That the "Republic" comics show Dreadnought in service of the Old Republic against the Separatists.
    Simply 😘👌

      Actually, the Dreadnought was created for the West End Games Star Wars RPG. To be more precise, it was made for the Imperial sourcebook together with several other ship designs.
      When Timothy Zahn wrote his Star Wars book trilogy, he had first planned to create a ship of his own. Then he discovered the sourcebook and realised West End Games had already made a ship he could use.
      The rest is, as they say, history.

      Actually they predate the Thrawn Trilogy, Zahn was instructed to use existing WEG ships and after initially being miffed about it then fell in love with these ships and used them extensivly. But saying they originated their is just wrong. Another error in this video.

    Surprised no mention of the Ruusan Reformations with it! 600 meters long was the maximum size allowed for any capital ship to be made. And the reason they lasted for so long wasn't necessarily as they were a great ship, but because there were so many of them as they had been made for well over a century. So they were reasonably simple to get and you'd lose a large number of potential capital ships if you didn't utilize them.

      @@papapalps2415 Well if you ever read about these ship in the Zhan trilogy or any other books she was heavily armed and performed better than things like Nebulon Bs and Victory class Star Destroyers. She had more useful fighter bays for things that weren't Tie Fighters. Lancers and the such were also out classed. 3 dreads could still take on a single ISD as well in BBY. Its why in legends it was popular with the Rebellion as well as many defense forces.
      Taking all that in, she's cheaper to build than an ISD or Home One, You can more easily build many more of them than either of the other 2. As I said before, old tech isn't always outdated by functioning standards, its sometimes outdated by weight and size which makes it difficult to fully outfit a ship with other modern equipment.
      She is superior to a lot of other ships in that way as only ISDs or ships of that scale or capability are her only real threats. Making her far more useful in specific circumstances that would destroy other ships in her size class. Even then, improvements can be made.
      It's kinda like a B52, A10, AC130, F15, F16, F18 and C130. No matter how you rearm them, they still remain tactically functional despite all the other new aircraft around them. Iowa class battleships were in service way longer than intended because much like the F15, when you have a winner, it's hard to replace them(and they are fully retired now with no coming back this time due to missile warfare which reshaped naval doctrine but Dreadnaughts still use Turbo lasers and the such just like her contemporaries). In the Star Wars universe, there are few that can go toe to toe against dreadnaught and come out on top with very little lost.

I.e. more ion cannons and some capital ship grade proton torpedo/concussion missile launcher on the stern and bow. But I turn her small hanger bays into fighter launch bays. Each could hold 8 clutches and 4 shuttles/gunboats. By the time I was done she was a good pirate ship. It's crew requirements actually aren't that bad by IRL standards. If we compare it to a Nimitz-class Aircraft carrier - with a standard crew complement of over 5,000 - we see that the Dreadnought-class is 8 - 10 times the overall size/volume of a Nimitz, but only requires 3x the crew to operate. For reference, if a Nimitz-class had the same proportional crew requirement, it would only need 1600-2000 crew instead of the 5000+ it actually needs, making it some 60-70% more crew efficient.
    Because of this, I think the supposed difficulties of keeping such ships supplied and manned have been badly overstated. Considering that the average, reasonably well-developed planet in the Star Wars Galaxy has access to vastly more wealth and population than the U.S. Navy does, and the U.S. Navy has little trouble keeping its fleet of Nimitz-class Carriers supplied and crewed, I think only the most backwater worlds would actually have trouble maintaining a small force of Dreadnoughts. For bigger, wealthier worlds like Alderaan, Axum, Coruscant or Eriadu? They could crew and support whole armadas of Dreadnoughts easily.

    • @kennethferland5579
      @kennethferland5579 Před 4 měsíci +4

      True, but given how the crew density of other enen larger ships plummets into the range of 1 crewmmember per million cubic meters it seems out of line. Obviously thouse other ships have absurdly low crew counts canonically, because people don't understand cubic growth when they throw out enormous ship sizes.

    • @kennethferland5579
      @kennethferland5579 Před 4 měsíci +3

      And for your information the cost to crew a Nimitz IS a crushing burden on the Navy and they do have a lot of trouble doing it, thats why reducing the crew size for the Ford class was such a huge goal, the cost of crew every few years is enough to build a new carrier from scratch.

      Base the largest current know aircraft carrier with the number of aircraft they could carry. Then we added Saturn 5 rocket engines to it.
      Then look at other support craft that surround a carrier till you have a triangle shape and mass area shape arrowhead.
      So now we have a base build time, cost in US$ along with volume of area and hull/ structure braces in tonnage.
      Since WEG and WotC 3e to 4e Saga Edition, orbit travel time from a planet to its nearest moon list for a stander light cargo transporter is 30minutes. Otherwise 2ls/hr. two light seconds per hour.
      It took Nasa rocket two days to reach the moon. So now we have travel speed vs ship structural integrity.
      Math starts to get really deep here. 48hours down to one hour. .. so .. 12km/s times ? what ?
      Kinetic energy of impacting space dust creates how much friction thermal heat?
      Navigation deflectors energy output to push a side incoming dust in the craft flight path ?

      The book states the dmg a light/heavy steel door can take then roll 3d8 to dmg a given surface with a storm trooper blaster. One blast could just remove the lock or just punch multiple holes through said door base on story telling dramatic effect.
      As for crews, living population education and any androids will determine the makeup of a given fleet.
      I can easily see a colony mining ship traveling with earth solar system outer Ork field and growing into a mile long imperial destroy over a few decades just to past the time. Ship builds construction mining droids, and the droids bring raw resources back to the ship to turn into more hull plating, structural support beams, and create more droids .

      @@kennethferland5579 It does seem out of line with the rest, but then it is always compared unfavorably in this matter to other Star Wars ships. In-universe, it is horrendously crew-intensive, but compared to the real world it's actually really light on crew.
      As for the Nimitz-class' crew requirements, it can't be THAT crushing of a burden if we've maintained 10 of them in continuous operation for decades. Not to mention the other 289 combat vessels the Navy maintains in service simultaneously. Reduced crew requirements will always be a priority with any competent navy because of the resources it frees up for other things. Pushing for more crew-efficient designs doesn't mean they are struggling, it just means they have good sense.

      Which these ships were seen as so good they were one of few Rebel Ships stolen by the Empire to use later on
      The downside is it did lose out on the hanger bay and had some other issues initially

    I don't understand the comically over saturated crew requirements of star wars. I know their AI and general automation isn't that high compared to most universes but there is just no way a ship that small could sustain 16000 people. How does a ship half the size of an ISD require more than 3x the crew? It's insane.

    • @russianbear0027
      @russianbear0027 Před 2 měsíci +2

      Take a look at the crew sizes of ships in and before WWII. The Iowa class battleships had a crew of around 2800 and are about half the length of this craft. Star wars ships are generally a lot wider and taller than IRL ships so if we estimate 6 to 8 battleships fit in this 16000 crew members is pretty reasonable. Its about 3 fully loaded Nimitz aircraft carriers if we include the air crews.

    Listening to this a idea hit me what was thrawn rush for clone crew for 184 dreadnoughts when all he need was the crew from around 25-26 normal unmodded dreadnought that 16000(stranded crew)x25= 400,000 crew members to fill the 2200(modded crew size)x184= 404,800 that around 8x time force multiplier. He could reverse engineer the katana fleet slave rigging and mod the all unmodded and freeing up a lot more manpower to rebuild the empire.

  • @xKeraix
    @xKeraix Před 4 měsíci +3

    If we consider iowa as reference, at best tie she had around 3000 crew being liqud fuel (no coal) and size 260x33. You can "put" around 8 iowas inaide dreadnought bulk so 16000 can be imaginable, not 60000. Naming assume its role from "rought" era warships who still live in modern times. You cant directly compare it to ISD, its like compare Iowa and modern warships.

    So, was there any reason why some of the later versions still had problems with the computers breaking down all the time? I understand why some of the earlier versions had problems. The first few model years are always at risk of being unreliable, but when people could die when something fails, I would imagine that the manufacturer would be quite interested in addressing design flaws.

    Im surprised Palpatine didn't want more of these cruisers for the Imperial Fleet. A 16,000 man crew, surely he'd love to tie so much of the population to his Empire once the technological issues were worked out. Heck, with the adaptability, you cpuld use the Dreadnought as the template for a modular cruiser design that will leave enemies guessing on what type of Dreadnought they're about to face off against. You could have one version lined with turbo lasers for maximum damage and planetary bombardments, another built solely for carrying large numbers of TIE fighters and its variants, one dedicated to ground assault that carries enough walkers to conquer a planet should the people resist, and even one that fulfills all of these rolls to a limited capacity. The adaptability of the Dreadnought-class Heavy Cruiser makes the possibilities virtually endless

  • @phoenixx913

    Dreadnought Class has always been one of my favorite ships in Star Wars heavily armored, heavily armed with a well hidden bridge and a back up bridge buried in armor.
    if you updated all the internal components with modern computers, reactors and such it’s be nearly the perfect Heavy Cruiser.
