- Value sketching is very helpful miniature painting technique, that is useful as a guide for your layers. In this tutorial, you will learn how to apply it when painting your minis!
This is also very similar approach that I am using for my display pieces - like my red Sister of Battle. If you want to level up your warhammer minis as well, definitely give it a go!
Value sketching approach using a paint brush is the same approach that @FlameonMiniatures uses, shoutout to him for his awesome work!

This dude is a world class artist who just happens to love mini painting. Unreal!
This channel is highly underrated, top class my man.
Definitely! These short tutorials and also the quality of painting that he delivers are amazing!
Seriously one of the best, most informative, and easily the most concise, of all the painters on CZcams. This channel should be exploding with subscribers.
The third method is such a great exercise for people (like myself) who are just getting the hang of properly painting values.
Dude, I love your no-fat no-bullshit just-bangers videos. This one is excellent!
I love that method of shining a light and taking pictures to see where the highlights should be on a mini. I feel like the hardest part of highlighting (as a novice) is making sure the light source consistently comes from the same direction and knowing where to place the highlights. I'm excited to try that out
It's a neat trick.
End result is amazing. 🙌🏻
Probably the best video about value sketching that I've seen till now
sir, we need your patreon. you helped me improve my painting very fast. really enjoy your work
50 hours of painting to make 4:53 minutes video. It deserve to get like 👌
That was easily the best video I've seen on value sketching! I can't wait to try your method. Zenithal never works for me, even though my paints are thin. It always gets washed over. Thank you!
Knocked it out of the park again, great video.
I've heard people use that term so often but I never understand what it meant! I couldn't find a video that would go into details about it! Thank you so much for this.
One of the coolest minis I have seen was done in black and white. It was amazing to see what a great artist could do with only value.
Buddy you are an absolute legend. Your videos are nice and easy to follow and you information is always top class. 👌. Keep up the great work.
There is only one question left: where to get the time to glaze such smooth transitions ...
Oil colours are your friends :)
You’re a freaking beast my man! Looks awesome and it’s a wonderful video like always!
Thanks a ton!
This channel is great at making complex techniques seem much more available.
That blending!!!
Wow, this Video is so helpfully. Thank you so much for that. 😍
I always love great information, delivered concisely and without preamble. What a great channel
barely know anything about warhammer or painting figures in general, all i know is that your videos are both fascinating and extremely relaxing, thank u very much for uploading
What a great demonstration. Thank you so much!
The music in the background is by Adriel Fair in case anyone was wondering
Great technique! Thanks for sharing.
Seriously the best painting channel out there
That female stormcast looking model is awesome. Where did you get it?
I really need to practice this as you're making it look easy and it comes out fantastic.
Mate, this video is the business! Cannot wait to have enough time to try it out!
Fantastic video, I aspire to be able to get as smooth transitions as you
Best nmm video I've ever seen!
Great video as always!
Thank you for another awesome video ^^
Wow this was a great tutorial. Usually by the time someone explains something for 40 minutes its easy to start to get lost in the details, but you explained everything quickly and clearly this actually seems attainable. Thanks
NMM still seems black magic to me, but this is one of the best videos I ever seen.
i do not understand how to do this one little bit! perhaps one day but my gosh that mini turned out fantastically good i mean just beautiful! great work chap! love your channel
Outstanding!
Clear explanation, clearly shown being used, great vid and beautiful paintjob too, hugely underrated channel.
I've been using an airbrushed (too humid in UK to rattlecan most winter days) non-matt undercoat for a while - dries a bit satin, I'm not meaning glossy.. Then I've a shelf at the top of my home made spraybooth, anglepoise for main light source and take pics of the reflections from whatever angles I choose before the undercoat is even dry.. Allows me to try out different lighting angles and even ambient colour lights using my trusty coloured cellophane collection and cheap led booklights hooded with tape and bits of paper. Enough reflection for my camera to catch and a paintjob composed before I even wet a brush.
Trying colours out before you paint, and during if you get stuck, helps you seem like a better painter. Even with a model half done, that isn't going as you'd hoped (ever had that happen?) ;0) once you get the fake ambient light back on it can show you where you can fix it with glazing on a filter or maybe two in opposition.
My skills with a brush are limited (but growing slowly) this is an upgrade in planning (and correcting) that anyone can do though.
Very creative solution. i like it a lot.
Great tutorial, and beautiful paintwork.
Fantastic!!!
I enjoy the videos and format…short, sweet and to the point! Hope to get my skills up to your level one day!
love your videos, they explain everthing so.. on the point, not to slow not to fast
This channel is gold! Love your comparison with other methods to paint accurate light reflections that are also visually pleasing. The results are absolutely beautiful with the last method, but it will take some patience to get there. Totally worth it though!
As always this is is awsome for a tutorial ! Keep working hard, this videos make me keep trying some techniques that not that long ago seemed unachievable. They are still unachieved but at least they are now on my roadmap! Thank you! :D
I love the look after the second step (after white and the first highlight color). This will look awesome with turquoise and magenta. 80s calling!
Another epic video! Thanks for the tips man 👊
excellent video, just what i needed, thanks
Another great and informative video. Right to the point, without the fluff filler of others.
Great video!
Thanks, this was great!
this was a great tutorial, really detailed and explanatory, I do enjoy your videos and your painting methods. only thing left know its to have the patience to follow throught
So good. I really feel like trying!
Where can I find stl for that model?
As always, another amazing video full of useful knowlegde. The best miniature I have painted by far have been after watching one of yours videos. Thank you very much
I have been sketching for almost 20 years now and I still have other painters acting like I am ruining my model and then have no idea how I "saved it" from the abyss lol. I am linking this video to all of them from now on, and have already linked it twice(seriously people question how I get results that often lol)
Pure Gold!
Watching your channel is so inspirational for a beginner, then reality hits, I have a very long way to go! It'll be easier because of all the content you shower the community with
Start with my video for beginners, it's a solid foundation that gets you very far when you grasp the main principles!
That was great!
Great tutorial as always :)
Excelente! Thank you.
Love your content
Great gold nmm guide thank u
Your videos are insane and amazing! I'm not a minature painter but this makes me want to start!
Never too late to start! :) what brings you here? 🤔
Awesome tutorial! Feels like I actually gained some skill from just watching it. Perfect formy next project =D
Buen video, gracias 😉
This chanel is very high value !
Amazing video and technique. What was the female knight miniature used?
Great painting advise and more importantly, a great big bushy beard!
That is the way it goes! You can get good results in a reasonable time by using inks, tmm colors, wet blending etc . But top results are achieved with glazes and this tecnique needs time, the more time you use, the bester it is at the end.
i LOVE that mini... where did you get it, please?
Superb Video...as always. But can you please do another video about sketching ? Like the gold one you did in this video or any NMM color?I don't get the sketching in any way...I know it can be used for anything(like skin painting).Thank you very much. Greets from Germany...Markus
Loving the content, Zumi!
If I may ask, what's your favorite gold paint?
Do you mean actual metallic gold or paints for nmm?
@@Zumikito I was thinking metallic, since you already did a nmm video.
i wonder if for same minis is possible with brush apply values in shades of grey, like in the "zebra effect" but greyscale, and then cover with inks / contrast / glaze...
i think it can save time, maybe with a less vibrant color result
After that vids I can't sleep, I want wake up after midnight and paint :P
Knew that there had to be a repeatable way that everyone should be able to do. Seen value sketching in plains like this but didn't get how to blend the plains together. Makes sense.
One of the best tuts. What paints are used for this gold?
Pale yellow ak, yellow ochre vallejo, japanese brown AK, hull red AK
@@Zumikito Thank You sir! :)
very nice Tutorial, thank you! (by the way, where can i find this miniature?)
It is from Loot Studios :)
What method would you recommend to water down paint? Just regular water or would a paint retarder be good as well?
Can you put some medium later on all those armour elements which will make them shiny (and won't ruin all your previous efforts)?
I really like that model... would be soooo good in a Stormcast army... if only they sold the stl separately
I would sub to a Patreon of yours if it meant i could get critique's of my minis in short fast pragmatic style, just like your CZcams videos. love it. I'm not sure if i missed it but what is the mini? Looks like a great practice piece for NMM.
Patreon is coming soon! The mini is 3d printed from Loot Studios :)
I get the most value, paint-wise, from watching your lovely videos. Have a happy Halloween, if that's something you do- I'm not saying that to be a dick, just not sure where you're from, and it might not be much of a deal there. Regardless, enjoy your weekend.
Totally understand it, we don't really have Halloween, but very similar equivalent! Thank you!
What white paint do you use with the paintbrush over that larger model with the black primer, it has great coverage!
Ak interactive white, you will love it!
What do you use as you black primer?
I would love to see you do a gold and rose gold on metallic parts and a white base like how heaven looks from doom eternal
Hi Zumikito, I am new to the hobby and I've been following the classical painting sequence: priming, base coat, wash, layering, highlight and details. I see your approach is a bit different, may you explain or point to me why is it so ? Your models look great and I like the style. I wish to learn more from you. Thank you.
Hi! The approach you are describing is a good starting point - especially if you are a wargamer and you are looking for a consistency across your army. I have used it in the past as well! As you paint more, you will soon find out that you can do everything without a wash - so I prime, basecoat (dark) and start building lighter layers on top of it. Edge highlights are placed as well and if I need a separation of details, I blackline them with watered down dark color (usually black or dark brown). So for the most part it's the same story told differently
@@Zumikito I see. Appreciate the prompt reply. Subscribed and look forward more teaching videos from you ^^
My humor is not dark. It is simply low in value. :(
Красота!
I sad it your channel quality is constantly going up :) love the video!
Interesting. This video may have connected some important dots. I’m a new painter, when I’ve been glazing to blending two colors, I’ve been doing a mix of those two colors. If I’m understanding video correctly, I should have been using the only the lighter color for the glaze.
Am I understanding correctly?
Yes or the darker one into the lighter one(it's up to you and depends on the material). If you use a midtone over the point where 2 layers meet, you stain both sides unequally, so glazing just one side into the other is better.
Awesome! Thank you. Love the channel
Where you get that female fighter 3d model?
The final result looks stunning!! What’s the name of the model/the brand? She is such an awesome sculpt.
It's from Loot Studios - "it's another trap" bundle
@@Zumikito oh noooooo it’s a printable model 😪😪😭😭. I think it is no longer available but I don’t have a printer anyway. Thanks for the reply :)
When glazing the lighter colors into the darker ones are you pushing the pigment light to dark or reverse?
dark to light.
What if you based with your shade color, heavy dry brush with grey, light dry brush with almost white. Brush some extreme white. Then air brush a tint?
Unfortunately I can not see how this could work. With drybrushing you increase speed at the cost of brush control. If you have a good idea how to try this approach, I will be happy to look at it though!
One of my biggest problem attempting glazing or nmm in general is the drop of water remaining wgen I take the brush out the mini. But loading less the brush seems to me i do not make any progress. How do i manage this?
Wow... wait a minute. Where is that video where you paint Quicksilver using ink? I haven’t seen it :( Is there any video where it is detailed how to paint with inks over cenital basic highlight?
What white paint was that? It went on perfectly opaque onto the black?
The white? It took like 2 layers, but it is my favourite - ak interactive white
@@Zumikito thank you! I will have to try that. I also hear that pro acryl white is also supposed to be good. Good white paints are hard to find!
Blending looks so good but i can never get the transitions inbetween the colours correct :(
What white paint is that??? The coverage is amazing
It's ak interactive white!
@@Zumikito serious? It looks so good! How do you find it?
@@stewartfrancis9188 it's honestly my favourite white, so I agree with you! I have a video dedicated to painting white and this is one of the 3 options that can be used for very nice white
@@Zumikito will check it out
