- This filming model of the UD-4 "Cheyenne" Dropship from James Cameron's Aliens may technically be a miniature, but it's a massive ship model with some wonderful details. Adam and Propstore's Stephen Lane walk around the model and check out the cockpit, surface textures, and techniques the modelmakers used to give this vehicle its distinct shape.

Love❤ from India🇮🇳.
100000pounds
Bro show me the Robin Suit right there!
Was Adam planning to bid on anything?
I have one thing to say here. and I hope you agree and do a build series for us :D But please, for the love of all the Holy Xenomorphs out there. build one. and build one with lights, all the weapons and the internals from the movie, including the APC. and yes. it should def all fit inside one of the same scale as the movie prop ^^
I love how industrially militaristic the ships and craft in Cameron sci-fi movies are. Even the CG ships in Avatar had a similar look.
Halo being one of the biggest...
Yea, when i saw Avatar trailer first time, it was instant "HA! Aliens!"
IIRC Cameron has a thing for Vietnam era equipment and vehicles, and it shows in both Aliens and Avatar.
The dropship landing (and later crashing) sequence in Aliens is some amazing filmmaking.
Game over man, game over! 😄
I love how Adam shot all of these short videos all at one time, but makes the effort to make each intro unique and different, like we're getting a mini TV show with each bit.
He’s got the on camera skills for sure
Hah, yeah i keep thinking that with every new video, and Stephen also seems genuine with every new video, even though they probably shot 10+ of em.
This amazing ship has a strong "Thunderbirds Are Go!" vibe. Especially Thunderbird 2.
That dropship is some of the dopest future vehicle design, to this day.
I can always remember a film review in '86 that didn't really like the film but said the technology was 'always believable'
I can never understand how they can film these and actually make them look so good on screen.
Lighting and really good cameras. To say nothing of post processing.
It's funny because in the flesh they look like great big toys with a few neat details.
Well, tbf they looked much better 36 years ago, but film grain, lens choice, lighting and atmospherics (fog/rain) can do wonders, and it really can’t be emphasised enough how a few small lights on the vehicle itself can bring it to life way more convincingly.
My local museum had a show of special effects from iconic movies when I was a kid. They had original Blade Runner car/miniature, and I remember thinking, this is it? That being said, they did have the Aliens queen which gathered quite a crowd. It was pretty amazing.
Having a background in practical and digital effects for film and TV, I can confidently say that 75% of what makes or breaks a shot is good(or bad) lighting.
Most of the time we see the drop ship, it's dark and/or raining, when it's being shown as a model. So that plays a big part in what is seen.
I love the synergy of this video series!
-Adam gets to geek out and we get to share that joy.
-Prop Store gets THE Adam Savage to look over their items.
-And the people who watch these vids are the ones most likely to buy.
All around win for everyone.
It's very likely propostore is paying tested a fee, as well. They have to pay the bills, and they know this is amazing marketing for propstore.
@@theantiantichrist I would hope so. Marketing is everything for auctions. They stand to make a hell of return on investment.
Its less likely that one of the viewers is going to purchase an auction, but its very likely that someone who would purchase an auction will catch wind about it through a viewer.
I think this is the best advertising The PropStore could get! Ask the best person there is to review their props, THE Adam Savage, and show the best audience, US! Great video series!
Yes, this is HIGHLY targeted marketing.
I usually don't like fictional spacecrafts but this is *ONE* exception!!
I'm such a huge fan of Alien and Aliens. Two great movies. This is pretty dang cool.
It’s interesting to note that the Dropship model doubled for both the craft seen in Aliens.
This is similar to what they did with Sulaco & the rescue ship seen in Alien 3. During production, Sulaco was borrowed from Bob Burns & restored, for the filming of the opening sequence; although they did something very clever. Which was to write Sulaco backwards & then film it in a mirror as it needed to go through the shot in the opposite direction.
Then on the other side of the model, the name was removed, in order to film the sequence for the rescue vessel.
I think I would have had a heart attack if I saw this thing in my teens or early twenties when Aliens was my lifeblood. The dropship prep scene is one of my all time favorites. The snare drum, the hydraulics, the slaps of metal on metal. Lets go kick some ass. Good drop, shame about that bad feeling though.
Absolutely BADASS!
@@marco5911 Somebody wake up Hicks.
You always say that, Friendly Metroid. You always say, I got a bad feeling about this drop.
I remember visiting Alien War in London in the early 1990's. Many original props such as the smaller scale dropship and APC where there to be seen - and touched ! If I recall there was also the Gateway matte painting on display and parts of the full size alien queen puppet. No glass cases, so barriers, all out in the open. Crazy.
Yup, I went there too and couldn’t believe the amount of props on show. I photographed them all from various angles..goodness knows what happened to them though.
I actually got to go behind the scenes of Alien War & the stuff they didn’t have on display was amazing. They had a Smart Gun & harness, Dietrich’s armour & various pieces from the production.
The walls / corridor detailing of Alien War were cast from the original sets of Hadley’s Hope, as well as some of the bits of set from the Nostromo that had survived (mainly the more industrial parts).
But one of the stand out props they had acquired was a pair of Art Deco style Greyhound statues, that were from a deleted & long since lost scene from Alien 3, which took place in the library on Fury 161. This scene, I think was a left over from Vincent Ward’s original concept.
You've just reminded me of a epic memory, thank you.
I remember that! I was too young at the time to go though
Wasn't there an event in Scotland in 1996, please?
I just love that the Prop Store has priceless props and Adam ABSOLUTELY has to touch them and fiddle with it and wiggle it around... 😂😂😁😁😇😇
As a kid this was one of my favorite space craft. It was gritty and showed hard use and helped establish that the marines on board were seasoned veterans.
It's one of my fav sci-fi ships because it looks credible. It's the sort of design you would expect from the military. No soft, curvy lines, but practical, modular, hard edge, reliable systems and sensors. It's got the best of the Apache, Harrier and Hercules in terms of military grade.
We need sequels for the Space Marines...they dropped the ball big time..Shop the idea please. You know people in Hollywood.
Yeah Alien 3 was such a failure. You had cool Colonial Marines with dropships, Pulse Rifles and Smartguns.....And the sequel had some grimey prison? Alien 3 looked like it had a budget of 50 dollars -_-
Robert and Dennis Skotak are, it's safe to say, legendary visual effects artists. If you think this is amazing, take another look at the original "Terminator" (1984). It had a fraction of the budget of "Alens," but their talent and experience pulled off amazing miniature shots that still hold up today. They are proof that it's not the cameras, the film, the lighting, or the budget that creates amazing images. It's the mind and skill of the creators.
All this rich history of modelmaking lost to someone's home! These classic models should be in a museum of sci-fi and movie-making for future generations to enjoy!
Nothing's being "lost" in this case; it wouldn't have survived if not for the private homes it's been in all this time. And it may very well go on loan to a museum - quite a few collectors do that. But it's hard to expect everyone who's saved, cared for, and put time and money into restoring this stuff to just donate it.
If the few museums that collect this material receive sufficient support from benefactors and from an enthusiastic visiting public, then they can acquire some of this material - the same as art museums do. Unfortunately, at this point in time, the average person who accepts the value of art museums still views props and costumes with near-complete indifference. Hopefully that will improve in time, but it's been a slow road.
So cool too see the prop even though it's missing parts but Bug Stomper was the original dropship with the apc and crew leaving Sulaco but as in the movie gets destroyed....
Smart ass was the one remote brought in by bishop to rescue taking himself, Ripley, Hicks and newt off planet...
These props deserve to be in a museum! Big wow!
nah they deserve to be in the hands of a rich person who will hide it away for another 20 years
Dude it’s amazing these props from Aliens still exist in this kind of condition. I envy those lucky bastards who are going to win these auctions. We may not ever see these props again from such a beloved film.
This is getting ridiculous, the dropship from ALIENS!?! Models from Every movie I hold dear are appearing 👍👍😳👍👍
Shut up and take this guy's money!!!!
Brilliant piece of cinema history! I love Aliens and its probably my favorite sci-fi film of all time. Just a shame that the original APC vehicle prop was lost to time as it sat neglected to the elements in a studio lot and then was scrapped.
This is one where even as a kid I was like “those extending missile pods on the top don’t make sense!”. Still loved the whole colonial marines and movie in general. Helped sway me to serve later in life oddly enough.
Yeah I was hoping that they would go into detail about those. I always wondered how they were supposed to fit when closed.
@@matthewhall6288 They actually do fit very well. Watch the movie again, or the video game Aliens vs Predator 2. The wings fold over each other, but not at the same time so that they dont collide. The missile pod sit in spaces at the side of the ship
Those pieces need to be in a museum
They'll probs end up in som private collectors hands whoever the lucky winning bidder is
To quote Dr. Indiana Jones - “These belong in a museum!”
O...M....G. I just visited the link to the auction catalogue, and it is simply unbelievable what is going up for sale. Tons of memorabilia from Alien/Aliens, Friday the 13th, Bladerunner, Hellraiser, The Fifth Element, Event Horizon, American Psycho, Big Touble in Little China, Breaking Bad, Back to the Future, Evil Dead, Gremlins 2, Ghostbusters 2, etc etc etc... and that was only the first four pages. It's unreal.
The Space 1999 life size Moon Buggy as well.
I remember seeing this model along with other props from the film at a video games show in London not long after the film was released. It was being used to promote a video game that went alongside the film. Must of been around 30 years ago. Great to see it's still around and mostly intact
Thank you Adam, for bring the joy of props to us fans !
It's always the Aliens props that awaken the need inside me to spend vast sums of money i don't have, i adore them so much.
OK Adam, you have to build one. Lights, moving gear and launcher booms, all of it. :)
Gotta love that these priceless items will be sold into private hands so the public will never get to enjoy them.
Yeah, if it wasn't for these prop auctions and Adam's videos, we'd probably never see these fantastic pieces of movie history...
BETTER TO REMAIN WHOLE AND LOVED THAN IN A SKIP ...
Well it's private hands that are selling them, it's not like people are just gonna give it away
The public are assh*les. They break and touch things at the Vatican that have lasted centuries. There’s no way they wouldn’t try to play with this ish.
Sometimes a museum will be loaned pieces for a showing. Admittedly not always, not often, not everywhere, and not for long. If we want well-stocked museums, we need well-funded museums, and that requires a lot of hard civic participation. Additionally, when a culture has great wealth inequality, tons of rich nerds outbid institutions. So in a "frog and scorpion" way, it's the fault of the rich, but in a palpable way it's the fault of the citizenry.
In the mid-90's, they had an "Aliens" collection for Micro Machines. In one of the sets was the dropship. The wings folded in and could be extended out, like in the movie! Not even Eagle Moss' did that!
Amazing piece of film history! Up there with all the classic Star Wars ships. Great video tested
I remember seeing the Alien Queen and Ripley's loader at my local science museum. Such a cool display!
Los Angeles Museum of Science and Industry back in the day? That was an INCREDIBLE display! Burned into my memory. They also had the Blade Runner "Spinner", and my favorite matte painting of all time: the Mon Calamari rebel hanger from Return of the Jedi. My heart still races when I remember all these items right in front of my face.
Prime 1 Studio's are bringing out a 1:3scale Ripley statue from Aliens
Just being in the room with all this must have been the best treat.
Gorgeous, simply beautiful!
Neat to watch Adam get so enthused over the models. Thanks for sharing.
What a timeless beauty
Wow that’s fantastic. What a story and aside from some wonky rear projection the movie still holds up better then some films today
Amazing how crudely made it is and how good the end result was. Models = Movie Magic
Beautiful model, amazing
I'm SO glad this still exists! Thank you team.
Harry Harris, aquaintance of mine, good bloke he has a HUGE Aliens collection.
I know a lot of people are asking why not hand these to a museum, a lot of these seem to be coming from private hands already - and let’s be honest, they want a possible return on an investment here. Plenty other private hands are probably willing to pay more than what a museum is likely to pay for some of these pieces, no matter how treasured they might be to people like us or Adam.
I think it's good they are still cherished and hold value, and we get to see them up close from the comfort of our homes
Beautiful.
Amazing the stuff prop store finds. The drop ship would be so cool to own.
It looks amazing
Man, the efficiency of this beast is amazing! Just the right size to look convincing and still be manageable on a motion control stage.
Hope whoever purchases her hires someone to finish the restoration to its filming state.
oh my freaking god. I nearly lost my breath seeing the title of this video. That dropshop model is incredible and it belongs in a museum.
In the pipe, 5 by 5
i now feel like watching ALIENS again for the thousand time .
Some of the stuff coming up in this auction is wild.
Oh what I would give to own that one. My all time favorite movie!
Another amazing iconic movie prop. I was lucky enough to visit propstore not so long back where we 3d scanned a number of props including I beleive Stevens own Tie fighter maquette.... then last month I visited FBFX where I beleive you will be visiting again soon. Absolutely love this stuff.... I just need to earn more to be able to afford a piece for myself!
Great video, thanks! I also enjoyed seeing the Enterprise in the background.
(;
One of my favourite movie ships of all time.
What an iconic shape! Wow and those missle pods are SO non aerodynamic! Deploying them would almost stall out a real aircraft.. But I can see the inspiration from so many classic military aircraft. The CH-53, the AH-1, those engine cowlings look like from a UH-60.. so cool.
As Master Sergeant Ground Troop Commander Al Apone would say, “ABSOLUTELY BADASS!”
Love that ship
Amazing model.
This is way more what we can take. And it goes like this for days now. 😎😎😎😎
These videos have been brilliant. Did you shoot all these smaller videos back to back - I'm enjoying the fact that you have to express your gratitude and your welcomes as if you haven't just done the same thing repeatedly over and over during a day.
Dropship: You mean Express Elevator to Hell.
UNBELIVABLE !!! 🤯🤯🤯
One of my favorite movies
Piece of Film History.
From a time when they didn’t just use CG for everything! Awesome stuff. Been playing Alien Trilogy on the Saturn which opens with a scene of the drop ship!
Can't help to think that thi sstuff hsould be in a Cinema museum that people can enjoy for a fee.
Wow Awesome Video thanks adam sir for sharing this video.
MOVE IT SPUNKMEYER WE'RE ROLLIN'
Well done Nigel Blake for building the pattern for this model.
The one thing that bothered me was enlisted flying spacecraft/aircraft. In the current military(s), officers are aviators and enlisted are allowed as cargo-masters and mechanics. This could represent a good change as my Dad was a licensed pilot, but was enlisted in the Air Force. There is nothing wrong with enlisted as aviators, but I need to let this go as this is a film that represents a possible future for the Earth.
I miss the days when Hollywood used real model-built ships for Sci-fi films. To me they look better on screen compared to the computer-generated ones that they use today. What a beautiful ship.
These deep cut looks at old school movie props has had me in a nostalgia fever! If only I had the money to participate in the auction.
That would make for an awesome flying RC
"I want this!"
(Looks up minimum bid)
"Thats it man, game over man! GAME OVER!"
I have a Japanese import die cast with apc that is just unbelievable....my pride and joy!! Next best thing...would not mind having this one though...hehe..game over man!!!!
Along with the APC this has to be one of the most iconic vehicles from 80s movies
YOU BETTER BE PHOTO SCANNING THESE AS PART OF THE ARCHIVING!
I always wonder how weird it must be for these two going through ten consecutive introductions and 'Hi, how are you!?' cycles on what is pretty clearly the same day of filming.
They should've just reused the same clip over and over again, but you're right, it has to be pretty weird
It's weird for us, but these guys are trained personalities. I'm sure at this point Adam doesn't find it too weird anymore.
@@poopfartlord9695 Yeah, no weirder than having to maintain that spontaneity through the 5th or 15th take on location.
It’s not a very clever deception, especially as they’re wearing the same clothes all the time.
There's been some great props shown here. I hope your going to show a video of the Skutter from the show Red Dwarf that's in the Auction.
I really wanted to get a model kit of this.
really enjoying the content Adam is giving. However, it would be nice to hear what they think its goig to be worth
The estimate for this was £100,000 - £150,000 according to the website
Am I the only one on edge with Adam’s gesticulation and flailing arms? Geez, bet that auction house dude was shitting bricks 😬
The 'breeze' on Gobo's hair was a nice touch.
Love the first 3 Alien movies. yes, even the theatrical cut of Alien 3. The movies are so nostalgic to me. Was born in 75 so I grew up with the movies. Always remember Alien War at the Trocadero in London, which is now sadly a distant memory. Alien war if I recall had some of the original movie props on show and I remember a full replica of the Alien Queen in the Virgin music store in Tottenham court road around that time. If I recall in late 90s, early 00s. I so wish I could afford an original prop as all I have is a face hugger from the AVP game collectable pack and a MacFarlane avp figures
That piece belongs in a museum!!! It can't be trusted in the hands of some pleeb.
love that it has harrier jump jet rotating thrust nozzles too. what scale harrier kit would those of come off.
I want this ship!!!
Amazing! Such an icon from an amazing movie. Could that be restored?
Keifer Sutherlands wig and trench coat from lost boys in the background. Blade 1 armor and trench coat. Specifically the armor from the hospital scene where the cops shot him. Hellraiser bust of pinhead. 2 freddy gloves, one from one of the least popular Nightmare movies. I would be a kid in a candy store in that room.
There is something about Alien movies, that not even Star Wars cant deliver imo…those pieces are incredible
Damn, I'd love to see that restored.
Can we talk about the display in the background though? I see different iterations of Michael Myers' mask, Jason's masks and machete, Freddy Krueger's claws, a Venom mask, Pinhead, Chucky, how cool is that?
It's good to be a 3d modeler. I can make these at home and 3d print them almost any size :)
5:10 Just the best camera work.
I remember visiting Planet Hollywood in London in the mid 90's. They had a dropship hanging from the ceiling. Wonder if would have been this one.
I check out the website ..... you had better have some $$$ to drop blown away by the prices. I hope these pieces will be well looked after!!!
I'd like to see a video or two about the techniques of miniatures filming.
You can find them on CZcams. I watched a lot on Aliens just last week.
