    Altough things may seem different, in HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) seeking bind was not the primary goal in an engagement. Why hit each other's blades when you can simply lure him/her into an elegant trap and hit your opponent's openings without blade contact? In this video we want to show you some excercises (no free fighting) how we practice such techniques (and some bonus activities). Enjoy!

    I tried the move on 1:03 on one of my swordfighting groups and it totally worked. Love your videos. Anytime I'm doing HEMA and I'm feeling exhausted I think back to the energy displayed in these videos!

    In my opinion seeking the bind was only a way to get the enemy on the ground to make quick work of him and then move on to the next, no time for posturing and elegance. I love this video and share with all my friends! You guys are AWESOME!

    it is an intention in einlauffen. when running in or staying in a close bind we try to create a partial pressure on the opponents sword to provoke him to do the same (+ a good cover with the potential to wind). Then we're trying to get to the openning in a "gap" when he stops to push for a while (either to go away or to try something else). the verkehren and subsequent holding of the sword from krump is a similar principle. You strongly hold him to "confuse" his fuhlen or break his sequence.

    I can see your point but your judgement is quite unfair. The difference between "stage compilation" and a technique presentation is very small when shooting videos, of course we could've done more movements to get the feeling more right, but that is not the aim.I know a lot of fencers which video presentations are quite crappy but they are very good fighters IRL and vice versa. It just doesn't matter. Purpose is different. BTW there is no Vlado in this video:) PLS check our other channel. Cheers

  • @rimandries
    @rimandries Před 9 lety +1

    Great stuff guys. I saw you krumping with both edges is that correct? Do you have a preference for either. I am struggling applying force with the false edge. And why no gloves? Extra control?

    • @johnmeadowcourt
      @johnmeadowcourt  Před 9 lety +3

      Rim Andries Hi! It's correct. Both edges can be used for krump.It depends on what you want to do. Short edge has a stronger hold, long edge is more natural. But it fully depends on your preference. Each way has its pros and cons. Usually we don't use gloves when practicing - just in sparring or semi-controlled situations. Gloves limit you in many ways and lead to bad habits.

    Really cool video, are you guys still training?When you say 'exercises' and not free fighting does that mean in your passes you know in advance what the attack is going to be, but the defence and follow up is free, or is the entire pass pre-determined?Do you always train with feders?

    • @MartinFabian
      @MartinFabian Před 8 lety

      Sorry for the late answer! Yes, we're still training though I moved most of the video production to my personal channel.
      Most of the assaults you see in this videos are predetermined plus some improvisation. It depends, we do all kinds of practice.
      We do train with "feders" almost exclusively
      Cheers

    it is just a funny nickname. There is no such exact mention in the manuals, the masters sometimes mention "jumping" and we believe they meant jumping "up" as well as into distance

    Can these moves be used with Rawling Xtreme synthetic sparring sword?

    • @MartinFabian
      @MartinFabian Před 8 lety

      +Secret7Lover More or less yes though standard swords have a completely different feeling in bind and of course attributes stemming from the material it's made from

    • @Secret7Lover
      @Secret7Lover Před 8 lety

      Does blunt steel sword bend more than synthetic sword?

    • @MartinFabian
      @MartinFabian Před 8 lety

      +Secret7Lover again it depends on many variables, some may bend more, some less. Shape of the blade, hardness, point of impact all influence the way a sword bends.

  • @darthclone7

    isn't the foodwork a bit off? I mean I get that you want to deceive your opponent through bodylanguage, but having your backfoot off the ground like that seems dangerous to me. Especially when you talk about Ringen am schwert. I see no practical purpose in it, aside from gaining a few extra inches of length by going forth like that, but again, such footwork can be punished harshly by someone who's good at ringen.

  • @MartialPolarBear
    @MartialPolarBear Před 12 lety

    Well you need to inject more aliveness into this type of training to make it anything other than exercise. Vlado is just cutting and stopping. Plus the mistakes made are too obvious, nobody is going to do those out there in tournament fighting world. I assume this is the focus of the training now. It has no purpose in fencing.

  • @joebob4383
    @joebob4383 Před 11 lety

    if you watch closely, you can tell when one guy is letting the other guy hit him because he just ducks his head and does nothing with his sword. It's like one guy just gives up. One must never submit like so in a fight, lest he be struck down in vain!
    As the great master wrote: "Do not rely too much on the Crown: you will tend to get scorn and shame from it, and never ever duck your head while doing nothing with your sword" -Liechtenauer
