As a result, Bea Benaderet’s last episode of Petticoat Junction is hard to watch. She was seriously ill during the fifth season and missed a few episodes during this time. Her fellow cast members missed her after she passed away and fans had a hard time adapting to the show after she passed.
But how did Bea Benaderet get her start in her career? She was born in New York City and raised in San Francisco. While she wasn’t from a show business background, she had a knack for entertaining others during her childhood.
She sang and played piano during her childhood and then took up acting as a pre-teen. She loved acting in school plays, and she became so good at it that she landed a gig to perform in a radio play - while still in school!
She began her professional career during her teens, and she never looked back after that. Her early career focused on appearing in plays. She joined The Players Guild and toured the country acting in a variety of plays.
Her early career also included radio plays and voice acting performances. But as the medium of television was becoming more popular, she decided to give it a shot. She acted in popular TV shows such as I Love Lucy, The George Burns Show, General Electric Theater, and The Restless Gun.
But her biggest role was arguably as Kate Bradley on Petticoat Junction. Fans couldn’t distinguish Kate from Bea and when Bea passed away, the show was never the same.
Join FactsVerse to learn about Bea Benaderet’s life and career and her final episodes with Petticoat Junction.

A lot of these old shows did that kind of thing if someone passed away, even if it was a pet on the show that passed.
They just disappeared, and were never mentioned again, even though viewers always noticed the absence.
I guess they didn't want to mention death, even though it's a part of life, and people (even children) were less afraid of hearing about dying back then than they are now, because they understood it happens to every living creature at some point.

Her last scene was the most painful, and actually tear-jerking. She was too ill to complete that episode and had to have a stand-in for the scene. You would see the back of the stand-in (dressed up like Kate Bradley) with her last line being audio-recorded and played to have it appear as if she was actually in the scene. After that episode, they had to redo the opening credits - the next two episodes had still shots of the Shady Rest Hotel placed in the parts where Bea's credit would have been.....and they reworked the theme to speak only of Uncle Joe by himself.
A few episodes later, they reworked the credits to add June Lockhart "and here's a lady MD, she's as pretty as can be at the junction.......Petticoat Junction!"

Ms. Benaderet actually did an episode on I Love Lucy. She did a character that was sort of an older Pearl Bodine. She was a neighbor of the Ricardo's who had a crush on the grocery store owner who delivered groceries himself. Edward Everett Horton, who did a couple of movies in the 40s with Lucille Ball. This ep was also reminiscent of an episode of the Beverly Hillbillies where granny made a love potion for Pearl but it backfired and "Dr. Twombly" (Pearls love interest) chased granny instead. Her character on I Love Lucy tried to entice Edward Everett Hortons character but it backfired on Lucy as she tried to set up a romantic dinner for Benaderet and Horton and he chased Lucy instead. It was hilarious! I wonder if Henning got the BH ep idea from ILL?

    I loved Bea.
She was hysterically funny on the Burns & Allen show. My mother and I
used to stay up late at night to watch re-runs of the Odd Couple... the Honeymooners...and then Burns and Allen
    back in the late 70s.
Great t.v., no cursing...no degradation just classic zingers and one liners.
I really miss those days and my mom.

Good summation, but at least one error. Bea's character Blanche on Burns & Allen was not a secretary. She was a housewife, neighbor of the George and Gracie, and Gracie's best friend!

"The Valley has a baby" is really sad because she doesn't appear but rather lends her voice she recorded from her hospital bed. A stunt double was photogged from behind and her lines were synched up.

I loved Bea. I remember her in the Burns & Allen show which was mandatory in our household. At that point in time; I was on shift work, and got home by 1430 hours each day to watch Burns & Allen, and when on late shift, I did not leave home until 1600 hours which meant that I could still watch B & A before I went to work. Bea was so talented however; I was surprised to learn via Facts Verse today that she was the voice of Granny in Sylvester and Tweety; another favourite of mine and yes; I used to watch Petticoat Junction on a regular basis, and loved her role as Kate. R.I.P. Bea.

@@FactsVerse Uncle Joe's wisecracks and generally brash demeanor were always good for a laugh, even to us little kids. I recall Bea playing the upright piano in the hotel's lobby in a few episodes and she really had a skill with that. Nowadays, I wonder if those little, short riffs that were interspersed throughout the show were not also done by her off-scene, in the studio as it had the same sound as her on-scene playing.

....The Television Shows of the 50's, 60's and 70's were some of The Best. Petticoat Junction among them.
Top Notch cast, great story lines, and an adorable dog . ... it seems as that role of Kate Bradley was created just for her. ... you could tell. Genuine, kind, smart , funny .... and classy on top of it all.
It's a shame such great shows like this aren't the way it is today. I refuse to watch most of the Rubbish that is on Television today....
I much prefer watching shows like this and Andy Griffith , Mary Tyler Moore, Dick Van Dyke, The Honeymooners, and many more .... all the lovely shows that are of decades gone by, that are so much better than the rubbish that is on Television today. Maybe imitated,( somewhat) but not ever duplicated .
