Great tribute to Bea Benaderet! I remember the Flintstones where she played Betty Rubble. I also remember her on Petticoat Junction.

She was an amazing actor. She played Aunt Pearl in the Beverly Hills Hillbillies and in Petticoat Junction . Good family comedy shows of years past while growing up.

I remembered the Bevery Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction , watched both of them as a kid in the early 60's with my mom. I liked them both. She was a good actress and heard her voice in the cartoons too.🙂

She will be best remembered as the original voice of Betty Rubble on the cartoon series “The Flintstones”.

It was said that this woman smoked three packs of cigarettes a day, and that on the set she had a page who would go get her another pack if she had to stay late for reshoots. Lucille Ball was the same way.

Amazing, and yet up to her death at 62, though her normal voice had deepened, you could still hear the Betty Rubble character and a higher register sometimes in her acting, sort of like you wouldn't think she was a smoker. Then again Mel Blanc was like that. He smoked probably just as much but he could still sound like Bugs Bunny (almost) up to his death. Something amazing about their vocal cords.

I admire her performance as Mother Bear in the Warner Bros. cartoons featuring the three bears. That whiny voice is hysterical, but what really gets me is the cartoon where they plan a big blow-out for Father's Day (which Father Bear doesn't want, and which drives him crazy). She sings a song about what a great father he is, and she's constantly out of tune. As a musician, that's hard to do on purpose, but Bea was such a great actor and musician, she did it perfectly. Truly impressive.

Thanks Steve. I've always gotten a kick out of the Flatt and Scruggs song 'Pearl, Pearl, Pearl'....( come be my loving girl

Change your name to Mrs. Earl Scruggs ) :)

Yes, I recall Bea Benaderet from many episodes of the TV series: Burns & Allen from the 50's. She added hilarity to many of that series episodes. I am desperately on the lookout for the episode from Burns & Allen: Ronnie's Bashful, S-7, E-9 November 1956. Guest star of this episode was LISA GAYE.

June Foray voiced Betty in the pilot and in 1964 Gerry Johnson, who wasn't as good, replaced Bea for unknown reasons. I definitely prefer Bea as Betty. An interesting fact, Jean Vander Pyl was the only one who voiced Wilma from the pilot in 1959 and all of the Flintstone cartoons, except for The Flintstone Kids, until her last performance being in the Weird Al Show in 1997 after which she retired due to declining health. Jean died on April 10, 1999 from lung cancer and was the last surviving original main cast member. All four of them were heavy smokers. DON'T smoke kids.

Something odd I never thought of until now. June Foray replaced Bea as the voices of Granny and Witch Hazel and Bea replaced June as the voice of Betty Rubble. It's a shame she didn't live a lot longer. She never should have smoked.

DELIGHTFUL! I think it adds so much for you to begin and end with you talking at the mic. I hope to make improvements in my own "studio" as you suggested with fun things for watchers to see. I've gone back to updating long term covid this weekend. Have a wonderful week.

I have been fascinated with Bea Benaderet my whole life! And get enough of her!
Anyone seen the final episode of "Pete and Gladys"?
Bea and Fred Clark have a role in it?
    If so, is it good?

  • @wardarcade7452

A needlessly sad postscript to Miss Benederet's death was that 'Petticoat Junction' NEVER spelled out that Kate had died but just said she was 'away'- and they had the character's daughters read aloud letters from 'Kate' for a time. This despite the fact that her death was well publicized so the entire audience knew Kate was never going to return- not EVER! They even had an episode that had Granny from 'The Beverly Hillbillies' make a trip to try to find Kate because Kate supposedly was a deadringer for Cousin Pearl- and this was also done AFTER Miss Benederet's death.
Then, they had (of all people) June Lockhart play a doctor who moved in to the Shady Rest to have 'a mature female' counterbalance to Kate's daughters and Uncle Joe -but there's no way that a doctor can have the same chemistry as a mother! It's hard to think of any worse way they could have handled the room elephant of a main character dying.
