- There have been so many overlooked and underrated games that I didn't even know where to start. These were my top picks in the end:
Honorable Menitons:
-Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning - 2012 (If you like the Elder Scrolls games, especially Skyrim, you'll like this one).
-The Saboteur - 2009 (If you like GTA (Grand Theft Auto) and WWII games, this is the one for your)
-Phantasmagoria - 1995 (An FMV written by Roberta Williams, better known for the King's Quest Series)
Primal Rage - 1994 (This one on one fighting game came around the time of giants like Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct. This was as good as many of these, but nowhere near as popular)
Outer Wilds - 2019 (AnnaPurna chooses them wisely)
Here's the top ten!
10. Journey to Silius - 1990 - NES (If Contra games are your thing, this one's for you)
9. The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery - 1995 - PC (Designed by Jane Jensen, this is a criminally underrated Sierra game)
8. Tainted Grail: Conquest - 2021 - PC (An amazing deckbuilding ARPG)
7. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West - 2010 - PC (Ninja Theory's take on the Chinese myth. If you liked the original God of War for the PS2, this is likely your thing)
6. Return to Zork - 1993 - PC (the long awaited sequel to the 70's classic)
5. Shadowrun Hong Kong - 1993 - PC (An underrated cyberpunk RPG)
4. ActRaiser 2 - 1993 - SNES (Best side scrolling metroidvania for the Super Nintendo)
3. Shadows Awakening - 2018 - PC (An epic Action RPG that doesn't try to rip off Diablo II)
2. Thronebreaker. The Witcher Tales - 2018 (CD Projekt Red made this deckbuilding gwent based RPG that nobody played. Why? That's beyond me.
1. Mountain King - 1983 - ATARI (Ask anyone who has been around for four decades and they'll mention games like Pac-man, Pitfall, Superbreakout, Asteroids and severall others in a flash. But it seems like this obscure side scrolling platformer flew under everybody's radar. - Hry
The fact you mentioned Primal Rage makes me so happy. It's legit my favorite old never continued fighting game. Its so good I used to play it for hours on my sega
Before I was in middle school
Chaos and the Triceratops guy were my mains
Thronebreaker really is a good one on this list. I played it barely interested just to see what is was about, but the game just draws you in. It's really something else.
I actually bought my mother amalur for mother's day, she loves it
Your mother?? wow! She must be a milf! (just kidding!!!!)
I bought Thronebreaker Witcher Tales because of my love for the Witcher game series and your recommendation in one of your other videos...hopefully ill get to playing it soon.
Wait is Phoenix Point better than Xcom 2? That is a hell of a statement lol, guess i need to check it out soon. Thanks for the videos.
I feel the pressure. If you liked Gwent in Witcher 3... there's a ZERO percent chance you won't like this. Otherwise... it might be a bit of a gamble.
@@YeOldEntertainment yeah i loved Gwent played every gwent game possible in that game i think lol hahaha so I'll certainly enjoy then
@@shakaj1525 Oh then get ready to "oh boy" and "oh wow" with this one!
I loved Kingdoms of Amalur.
Oh and take your time with Pillars. I mean, it's a long ass game. Can't just rush through that easily either. We'll just be hearing from you in a month or few!
I think I have saved games still... (if I do) that will allow be to trim the fat and come through in a bit less than that.
Shadows: Awakening is amazing, criminally overlooked.
Criminally!
if you like RTS there is :
-Paraworld : a mix between age of empires 2 (economy) and warcraft 3 (hero units and XP system) set in a world with steampunk mechas and dinosaur-mounting vikings and ninjas... but nobody knows about it and the company went bankrupt so it's really hard to find nowadays
-Warlord battlecry 3 : 16! different factions to choose from and gameplay mechanics later used by warcraft 3 (hero system but here it was WAY more developped) and dawn of war (controlling mines on the map to build your economy but here you could also raze them to deny the enemy and get a temporary boost)
Phantasmagoria and Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within do seem to be beloved and cult-classic-y, so I'm surprised they made your list. GK2 is one of my favoritest games of all time. Jane Jensen is a god amongst writers. I agree for sure with The Saboteur. I'd been thinking about Thronebreaker-this might put me over the edge to pick it up.
Thanks for the comment! If you liked Gwent in The Witcher 3, you will absolutely not regret getting Thronebreaker.
Nice to See WolfheartFPS there!! Your entire channel is underrated! I will share with the wolfpack! Great list! You exposed my lack of knowledge on some oldies. Well played Sir! time to play shadow run for the first time O.O.
Wolfheart is my go-to-channel when it comes to D&D stuff, he's knowledgeable, ahead of the curve and thorough. Definitely one of my references (just like the other two I showed -->Rhykker and Pam).
i still have jade empire on my pc :), also kingdom of amalur
In my opinion Gat out of Hell is an underrated game as well
Neat. Started playing Tainted Grail recently after I watched your video :)
Are you liking it?
@@YeOldEntertainment I like the style, the atmosphere. The combat could be a bit more varied. But overall I like it!
I would like to add Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom to that list. It kinda flew under the radar but I always thought it was pretty good.
Add away! (thanks for leaving comment)
Deserving mentions, no questions there. The ones I KNOW AND HAVE PLAYED that definitely deserve(d) more exposure and appreciation - Primal Rage, Shadowrun (all parts), Thronebreaker is a masterpiece in it's genre. Phoenix Point is VERY good!
Tips for using Shadowrun OST, fantastic music in that game. Stands out by itself, in the game even better.
Yeah, man. I think the OST in Shadowrun Hong Kong (and also Dragonfall, really) is grossly underappreciated. It's understated but it absolutely nails the vibe of every location and dramatic intention of every passage. It's one of the unsung heroes of the saga.
In the spirit of talking about underrated games there's an upcoming one called "Ninja Issen" 2D Action Platformer fans should check out its demo.
I call it underrated eventhough it isn't out yet because it failed it's kickstarter but it's demo is crazy good! Give it a chance guys. It's still being made even without the kickstarter money
I'll drop by then.
i'd definitely also put up Tower of Time up here, as it was a game that impressed me incredibly. it had its flaws, but was tons of fun to play.
Thank you for leaving a comment, mate! Tower of time is little bit rail-roady and though the premise of the story is mind-blowingly amazing! The dialogue and characters can be unbearably cringy. But yes... perhaps more people need to know about this one.
@@YeOldEntertainment i agree with all of that, but the most exciting thing about it i i would say is its unique combat (although it is super easy to just cheese it all, even on the highest difficulty, but all you have to do is NOT do that.)
great content 👍
Thanks man! Appreciate it.
hi ye old entertainment good youtube video . kingdoms of amalur- reckoning fate (xbox one) and shadows awakening (xbox one) is my favorit role playing games
I think Dragonview is a severely underrated game. It's an SNES Action RPG in the style of Capcoms D&D games but it was made in the same year so it's improbable that they were trying to rip them off
Alright. You win. I'll check out Shadows Awakening. Yeesh.
Supreme Victory!
"Darkness Within In Pursuit of Loath Nolder" is great horror adventure hidden gem that scared the ass of me, that i can't get why it is not considered one of the top Lovecraftian games.
"Fantasy General" and the King's Bounty Katauri games come also to mind.
You sold me "Darkness Within In Pursuit of Loath Nolde" with your description. As for King's Bounty, I did not like the first one at all.
@@YeOldEntertainment I have not played the old 90s King's Bounty game, if you mean that.
@@DionysisVg Yeah, those.
Douchebaggery level: Michael Bublé LOL
Interesting list. The Sabateur looks like my kind of ridiculous.
Hehehe. It might just be. There's a truckload of tropes, cliches and it requires inception levels of suspension of disbelief, but it has a heart. Check it out if you haven't. It was going for 75 cents not long ago on GOG.
Not sure how you didn't put Arcanum on this list.
One I would add is Darklands '92.
Isometric rpg with realtime-with-pause combat six years before Balders Gate broke the RPG mold with it. Endless adventure, difficulty, late medieval setting in Germany where all the folk-lore stories were real. Decent graphics for the time and a rather interesting skill system, mostly raise by doing with training, with certain skills being much harder to raise. The real-world folk lore is a pretty cool change of pace from most RPGs. The only thing really lacking is story, I guess there is a main quest, but I know nothing about it. It could also have gained from some more continuity within the side quests. All in all though, very enjoyable open ended RPG.
Because one of the rules of the list was "no cult classics". Arcanum is a cult classic and more or less everyone who is into CRPGs knows and loves it. It is my favorite isometric CRPG of all time.
Speaking of underrated games, may I suggest you take a look at Dungeon of Naheulbeuk : amulet of choas ?
if you have already done it, my apologies, I did not see it in your list
I don't know if I'll try it, but I'll check it out for sure, thanks!
Don't you dare speak to me up close and personal as if I didn't play Jade Empire!!!
It's absolutely fantastic. Marvelous even, no way around it. But man... You must've not played Mass Effect recently enough if you think they stand on equal ground.
Oh no, no , no. They are most certainly not equals. But Jade Empire is a MUST if you like what Bioware brought to the table around that time (2007-2013ish).
@@YeOldEntertainment Well, couldn't have said it better myself if I tried.
My friend gave me return to zork. I loved it, but never got all that far lol.
Jade empire I believe is the best bioware action rpg of the 2000'
Has lots of action with a variety of powers and weapons with life, stamina and QI gauges.
Straightforward combat with:
Attack
Parry
Heavy attack
Jump
Dodge
Recharge QI
Ive actually played a lot of these and have a few more in the backlog. Never even heard of Mountain King though despite it apparently being on the C64 but then again the library for the C64 was ridiculous.
Okami is a game I always felt is underated. Sure its been released a few times and its sorta known but damn that game is amazing.
Primal Rage was awesome I used to play the hell out of that along with Weaponlord, Clayfighter and ofc obvious ones like SF2 and killer Instinct (that killer cuts cd was awesome) never liked MK though especially the bloodless SNEs version.
As for Outer Wilds I really want to like that game but after 6 hours I just cant bring myself to play it. Such an interesting premise and great locations but I just felt I was retreading old ground way to much and when I wasnt I was in a hurry to try and get back to a location before the loop restarted or/and sand blocked my way or the black hole destroyed my path. Maybe I will try again one day.
I felt the same about Outer Wilds... until I figured out the reasons behind the cycle
A bit surprised to see Journey to Silius here. Late 8-bit era surely was great time for action platformers and this one maybe sounds best of 'em all. BTW, did you happen to play Shatterhand and Vice: Project Doom? Just another hidden NES/Famicom gems with solid gameplay (well, Vice becomes enjoyable after you beat level 1) and great graphics and music. After 25+ years since my childhood I still return to 8 bit games from time to time. Never will they lose charm.
Shadows: Awakening. I've heard about this one only two times and both were on this channel. Looks like I'm going to give it a try when grow a bit tired of classic RPGs. Never played most of well known ARPGs except Diablo II (always preferred to look on this one as of action version of FreeCell card game cos D2 is just as meditative), Titan Quest (looks like it deserves to return to after so many years and two expantions) and Divine Divinity. The latter is really great hybrid of ARPG combat with little to none randomness and classic RPG story, characters, questing and exploring. The only flaw worth talking about is bleak graphics but... Don't all of us know it's not that important in RPGs?
You won't regret playing Shadows Awakening, you wont!
Primal rage is good but why did you not put in Rise 2 Resurrection
Just bought Shadows awakening for 1 Euro on Fanatical . Let's see how it goes. P.S. There are no spiders in gothic
I can safely predict you're going to get your money's worth...
Sorry but Actraiser 2 was badly received mainly because of Actraiser 1. The first Actraiser was a mix of Sim City meet Castlevania, something unheard of at the time and is beloved because of that. Strangely, for Actraiser 2, its developper, Quintet decided to remove all Sims element and that was mainly the downfall of this game. Then, when it comes to the actual gameplay, Act2 is frickin' hard, even on easy mode. The movement of the character are really stiff, something that was often seen on the NES, but not on SNES actions games. Sure the graphics, music and even the special moves are great but don't compensate for what people were expecting.
I know this to be the case. And that is why I think Actraiser 2 is BOTH overlooked AND underrated. I know people were expecting some of the city management from the first and that's why they thrashed it. But as a good old-fashioned side scroller from back in the day, this game was incomparable. This is the only other game that made me tone down the difficulty (the other one was Contra III) before I tried the normal difficulty. And I could NEVER finish it on hard. (Also, I don't know if it was my own incompetence writing down the codes or if you could only REALLY save ever X amount of levels... but most of my saved games didn't seem to work... go figure). The first one could've also made it to the list, but it does have a bit of a niche cult going on.
I love that Guy 😆
15:30 >Makes a poll
>Rigs it by not including previous promised games
>Rigs it by mentioning which game he wants to cover
>Still fails and makes a video on another game instead
This is very dangerous for our democracy
Dude wtf was that dubstep break at 5:35 :D
It was fade-out and fade-in but the song got claimed and I had to change it. And when I used youtube's utility to change it, it also got rid of the transition. (it was rhapsody in blue originally).
The one true most underrated masterpiece is Dead State from Brian Mitsoda. Just try to ignore the graphics, and you will have something on the level of Shadowrun.
Very interesting. You have me with the Shadowrun reference.
I mentioned Shadowrun because of very heavy textual emphasis. And again, graphic is beyond poor, you will nead a lot of patience in first hour of play, Sir. If you have no time, you also may read Dead State Wiki a bit, just to see how much variability you will have based on chosen dialogue options, relationships, characteristics, etc.
SABOTEUR almost broke my ps3 everytime it froze the console, and losing the save files,
Then on pc the game froze so many times that forced me to quit the game,
Has no autosave feature and the checkpoints are so far apart from each other.
Divine Divinity
Faxanadu
Lost Odyssee
The Temple of Elemental Evil
NWN 2 - Masked of the Betrayer
Shadowman
Kabuki Quantum Fighter
Yeah, Kabuki Quantum Fighter could've made it to the list, yes.
"phoenix point the game that does X-Com better then X-Com, here i said it" Yeah you said it, doesn't make it true though. For me the Original from 1994 is still the best. But even Phoenix Point is better then the remakes, is a Opinion i think not many will share. :) p.s. But yes Thronebreaker i really have to give a try, i saw it so often on steam and thought it looks interesting...
No spiders in Fallout.
No. not by that name. But there are some creepy rad-infested crawler thingies.
A Top 10 List of the Most Underrated Games of all Time? Shut up and take my… well, you have my attention. I‘d add Drakensang to this list, simply because it‘s a great CRPG in the vein of the Infinity Engine games and no one knows about it because it‘s based on 4th edition ruleset of the Dark Eye Pen & Paper system which is relatively unknown outside of Germany. You should play it some time in the future in order to fullfil your duty, mission and purpose in life.
Most underrated games of all time? Blade of Darkness and Sacrifice.
I can't stand Outer Wilds. It's the only game I've ever refunded on Steam. It made me realize that I find exploration in video games extremely boring.
Understandable... But it did hit me like a truck in the end. Wasn't expecting that. But yes... it's a bit of a niche game.
I only played Shadowrun Dragonfall, and it was a amazing experience. Glad to know that Hong Kong it's equally as good. Yet another game to put into a loooooong list of must play.
In my opinion, Dragonfall has far better combat, Hong Hong has a far better story.
bro, LOUD-ASS FUCKING INTRO MUSIC. WHY?
Coz loud-ass is all the rage these days
a really SUPER underrated game is tyranny its unfinished but man is it good
Thanks for leaving a comment. I thought of adding it to the list, but I think it got it's fair bit of attention and if it didn't get more, it's because it ends so abruptly that it's almost disappointing. I'm thinking of reviewing it before the year is over.
@@YeOldEntertainment oh no problem its a really good game but again its really flawed im currently watching your video and i cant wait for tyranny review
