Will give this a try this weekend! Was planning on spending (relatively) big bucks on replacing everything!

You are better than a Certified Mechanic , when I replaced the Striker Bolts he said to put them where the outline of the originals where , Hello if they where pushed back from 14 years of slamming that will not work ! My left was fine , the right moved forward tightened down BAM , tailgate latched , Good Job Bigcat 115 , You are the Man !

I think I will try both methods, I do think it is the first method for my truck though. My tailgate has been causing me problems for about a year now, and it finally stopped latching all together, so I probably need to take a look at it.

This worked perfect on my 04 GMC Sierra. Great vid. Thanks! Mine closes by a light push forward, now.

Fixed it! I had siliconed my latch plate back on after it fell off many years ago. Liked to have never got it back off :D

I replaced the latch hinges and striker bolts. Still had to slam it. My handle is super rusty. Thanks for the info. I just wish I saw this video sooner. I'm gonna Knock'er loose.

Mine is stuck closed, driver side not connected inside the tailgate at where the latch pin is, not the handle!

Don't use WD-40 as a lubricant. Use either 3-in-1 oil, or if you can get it, graphite powder. The WD-40 will actually make it worse over time. "Accepted Answer: Firearms, Drive Chains & Gears
WD-40 is hygroscopic and will attract moisture to the [part] which will result in rust. Because WD-40 isn't a lubricant, it really will not work well on [mechanical parts] of any type. Mar 9, 2012"

I have to push in my tailgate than lift up on the latch to open it. No big deal until your trying to open it one handed. Not fun. My bezel fell off too. Double sided tape doesn’t last forever.

Just an FYI...... The 2004 Avalanche is a complete different beast when it comes to the handle and cover....Has different connectors to attach to the bars that go to the latches at the edge of the tailgate....they are a P.I.A.............................
