- There are a few red flags that may come up when considering an equipment purchase. Watching out for them can keep you from landing in a sketchy situation or even ending up with a knock-off piece of equipment.

As a parts manager it’s extremely frustrating to see people waste money on equipment that isn’t backed up. The importance of long term parts and service back up should not be underestimated.
Mike Morgan of Outdoors With the Morgans (CZcams) just rented a Kubota excavator in West Virginia near Maryland. He pointed out the rental company bought all of the Kubota equipment from Messicks. It says something when they bought from you, in the middle of Pennsylvania instead of closer dealers in WV or Maryland. Good equipment, great dealer. A rental fleet lives or dies by parts and service help. Thanks for video - good info as usual

I looked into a Cabelas tractor when they first came out. They were sharp looking and had all the bells and whistles of a high end tractor at the time. Problem was the Cabelas store was 160 miles away for service and parts so I contacted the TYM dealer 40 miles away and asked them if they would support the Cabelas tractor and they said no way, they didn’t want anything to do with it. Since I have bought 2 Kubota tractors with 3 dealers within 30 miles and am very satisfied with my decision!
It’s a shame that there are people in the world who’s main job is to somehow debunk someone else out of their money.

This spring I ordered a starter solenoid for my Husqvarna commercial mower (It's the standard Ford 3 terminal that's been in use since the 60's). On the blue and white box it had the Fomoco script, and just above it, was "Motercraft". Inside was a red cased POS in the shape of a starter solenoid. Copper flashed STEEL terminals (god knows what the internal contacts are made of). Shoulda known for 13 bucks, you get a 3 dollar fake.
I've got one thing to say to Neil and Messick's "Take my money, Please".
I've never been sorry I paid more for genuine parts.

Messick's only offers the real deal.... if they cease doing that, we're doomed.
When you need a part, there is a reason OEM is more expensive...It's made for exactly what you're putting it on, and will last.
Cheapening up on a part that will keep your machine running is asking for a breakdown.
You want to save on non vital accessories(mirrors, lights etc.) have at it, you may actually find a deal.
A friend of mine bought an import from china, and after only two years of moderate use, with meticulous upkeep, he was complaining of "sloppy" assemblies, and excessively worn bearings and the beginnings of oblong pinned points. :(.
He saved a boatload initially, but is spending a lot of time fixing what shouldn't be worn out in the first place.
I've been sorry to pay for genuine parts, $90 for an o-ring, $80 for a spacer and all for parts that aren't even necessarily made by the OEM at all, you could buy a hyd. pump and a few cylinder kits for the same price for a full machine 5 years old.
Ah yes TYM and the new "Summit" came to mind a few times watching this.

You said it. One of our Farm & Home stores seem to chang brands on their lawn , garden and wood cutting equipment regularly.
You can find deals, but usually these are from people that don't know what they have. Like a buyer and reseller, that gets items they don't normally deal with. I found some in the food service area and another in networking, but with higher end brands. The food service was a tune press, not something you generally find online, but it can be found. I'm not sure the person really knew what it was for, but it saved me a ton of time. Used of course, but it was a basic tool, that I knew where to buy the internals for, and they didn't cost a lot. Another example was an access point, but the person didn't have the setup to test it, so they sold them as untested, as is. You take a chance, but this is equipment that general holds up very well.

I’ve bought equipment from a dealer with his own good service shop and have never regretted that decision. Back in the day, one writer said about chainsaws that the service availability was way more important than the brand. He said he’d buy beavers if that’s what his local dealer preferred. Points for naming the writer.

A good old school parts guy who used and worked on the equipment when he was younger in the service department is priceless when it comes to adapting parts from one thing to another.
It's also a good idea to have a dealer stand behind the product they sell. Our local Kubota dealer, Gray Brothers, also is a dealer for Precision mfg and we bought the Precision adjustable add a grapple as it met our needs the best. They had never sold and installed this model to a customer before. They replaced both hydraulic hoses because one got chewed up when hauling brush and the other was really too short for when you have it at the highest setting. They also put in a 90 degree angle fitting that swivels so it would take the pressure off the hose and connector nut to y h e hydrauliccylinder. The nut actually sheared in half on the too short hose that connectsto the middleof the cylinder. It was a done at no additional cost which we appreciate.

Neil, thanks a bunch for this. I'm on alert for the Spam and fraudulent texts, but I never gave a thought about how some thief might be selling tractor implements. Good advice about how to check an internet seller's real address.
I don't know if you've ever done a video on hydraulic leaks and how you can get really bad injuries by trying to find a high pressure leak with your hand, but I think it would be a great video. I had a hose leak on my old B3300 that was hard to find.
I look. No ware for just deals I shop my local Kubota dealer first if they don’t have what I need I call Messicks! Keep up the good work Neil .
Had to do that with my pallet forks last year. Dealer couldn't seem to ever get them. Finally had to call around and get a set as I needed them to move some equipment around in my shop. Called Messick's and they had a set of pallet forks delivered to the FEDEX Warehouse in a nearby town, picked them up about a week later...really easy, and great price even with the shipping cost....only trouble is, I paid my dealer for a set of pallet forks I never received, and of course nothing in my paperwork shows anything at all for them...this is apparently a common practice among Kubota dealers, they don't put anything you purchased into any sort of documents, so good luck proving anything when you don't get what you paid for.

The perfect complement to your top 10 tractor buying tips. Yep, the scammers are out there, for tractor implements, firearms, investments, and on & on. Parts support? Yep, you’ll need it. When (not if) you do that few hundred dollar savings may turn into a total loss.

My dad pounded into our heads from little kids.Buy the best you can afford.if you find you don't have enough saved money,go get a small loan and strive to buy GOOD quality.When its all paid for,you will have something that will last for years and hold onto its value.He hated junky,clunky worn out equipment that someone else pounded out.Hence,I always run what has treated me good over the years,KUBOTA.I'm disciminatory and bias,I bleed orange,just how it is.
Neill if you want a laugh their is a company in Turkey called Agrimir that makes farm machinery. Now some Turkish tractors are good and well made for example Tumisan tractors are a licensed copy of old Fiat’s with parts compatibility with the fiat’s. My boss bought a grain trailer against my advice from Agrimir. It claimed to be a 14 tonner but the reality it’s capacity could probably only stretch to 12 ton of good quality wheat.But the worst port is the chassis and axel/ wheels would only be safe for 8 ton maximum. So buyer beware if you look up Agrimir on utube the actual trailer that was shipped to Ireland is on the video as I recognise certain features including the lighting not connected to any loom at the back of the lights.
I agree with you Neil. The Cabala's Montana and the new Summit tractors is very risky. Stay with the proven names.
It's really a shame that Courtney at Good Works Tractors sold both his soul and his good name to turn that channel into one big Summit commercial. I used to really like and trust that guy.
@@D-OveRMinD Are you saying that the Summit is no good and won't be around in 5 years? I'm old enough to remember when people laughed at Kubota tractors and said they wouldn't buy those little pieces of Japanese Junk. You have to give them time to prove themselves, good or bad.

Supplies is complicated. Some things are getting better, a lot is not.
I wish we had a sales/service/parts guy like Neil here in southern Ontario Canada. My local kubota/New holland dealer is an absolute shitshow in every way possible.
Same here in Massachusetts. Local Kubota dealer has a very bad reputation.
Where are you in southern Ontario? I’m in eastern Ontario just north of Kingston and have nothing but good things to say about our local Kubota dealer.
...and in Puget Sound / west side of Washington state. We have a nice Kubota dealer in Marysville. The other equipment places just carry brands.
I grew up on a farm. Basically that was my university of how to "Tractor" correctly. I am awaiting delivery on my own Kubota L4060LE with Land Pride brand Bushhog, Lane Shark, Land Pride Grappler, and Land Pride Finish Mower. All Kubota Branded stuff with exception of the well made Lane Shark.
What do you think of the land pride grappler? I bought one recently and researched some but didn’t question my purchase much cause i have other land pride attachments and no issues ….but now im hearing from other forums that the LP grapples are junk! Bend easy etc! I mean they are made from AR400 steel and it seems fairly well built! Looking for other real world opinions.
I've had so many of the situations he's described. I bought a McCormick x1.25h from the guy I bought my house. There is a McCormick dealer 10 miles down the road. I have added a third function kit to the front for a grapple, and had nothing but issues. The tech and parts guy didn't know the C hose was case drain. The fittings on the Besko valve use British standard pipe thread which are rare and not stocked. The exploded parts view doesn't show anything for the grease zerks even existing. 4 months of tinkering and we collectively found all the parts to get my grapple going, but holy freaking cow was this a bastard of a problem. I told my wife I was ready to just roll the darn thing into the lake and take the insurance money! I even called some Branson tractor dealers, because they sell the exact machine with different model numbers without getting good traction on parts.
Overall, I feel like I got great customer service from both the dealership and Summit Hydraulics. Techs from both places gave me free advice and suggestions to finally get things working.
Hi Neil I found out with Titan, I have a 3 point hitch fork/hay spear, the top of the attachment filled with water and froze and split .it was just over a year I have had the attachment, their answer buy other carriage for 400.00 sad to treat customers that way, after all the stuff I purchased from them

It probably depends on what you are buying. I’m thinking of buying a grader blade to fit on the three point hitch. A seller selling Chinese stuff sells them for a good price. I’m tempted to get one and see how it goes.
I'd say something with almost no moving parts like blades or Box scrapers.. go for it.. Ive had a Chinese Box scraper for 3 years and its heavy gauge steel no issues with it
@@Morpheen999 buying a cheap metal implement would give one a good opportunity to test out welding skills if something does bend or wears out too.
Good video, doing a little "investigating" before buying anything is a good idea, it doesn't have to be "your car's warranty" to waste your hard earned money. Unfortunately, people fall for the worst scams regularly (consider there are still calls about "car warranties").
Love the car warranty ones...hell the warranty on a couple of my trucks expired over 30 years ago LOL.

There's a reason that old stuff is still around, it was built to last...I think their efforts in providing extended warranties should be on the old stuff, it obviously is going to last longer than the crap they want you to extend your warranty on LOL.

Equipment is nothing without good service n parts on self housing I've ran into this with lawnmowers I've bought in the past it's makes finding parts a nightmare.
Hard to pass up a deal on Alibaba for $10k versus $40k for a name brand machine. But then again, where do you get parts from?
Tons of chinese junk round here. Sure, sometimes you can find cheap ok junk. Like a cheap bucket, but man it works for light duty but doesn’t last as the wear strips underneath are bent steel channel and not solid plate

If no one caught it when he talks about looking for the cheapest builder for a tractor he is speaking of John Deer and their compact tractors being built by Yanmar but now someone else but not built by John Deer at all. Great rub Neal!!!
John Deere got away from that. A lot of their small Tractors are built in Georgia like Kubota. JD problem can be with their Frontier implements where they do source a lot of them out to low bidders and switch.

Ehh. I will take a cheeper machine if it does take easily available parts, even if the oem has little parts supply. For example the parker pump, kubota, Cat, Deere or cummins engine ect. If they have the common parts name brand I can keep it running and and fab the rest. At the same time my newest piece of equipment is my new kubota zero turn it dips back into atleast the 80's.
Not all chinese stuff is cheap. Recently looking for a set of pallet forks and grapple bucket. I found more than 2 American manufactures (actualy manufacturers not re sellers) selling items for far less than Chinese stuff.
Also on the financing front..I recently saw that Kioti offers 0% interest yet that they just charge you a few thousand more for the machine.
How’s the Land Pride 0660 grapple hold up? After I purchased one I heard from other forums you have to be careful with them or they bend easy and break welds! All the other LP equipment I have seems fairly stout and never an issue!
We have good luck with them. There are a lot of grapple companies, but I'd suspect Landpride has the largest share of the market. Lots of Fanboys when it comes to grapples.

So Neal, l take it ; your "best bet" is to just "cruze on over" to your local "Kubota-NewHolland" dealership and get "fixed-up". Chinese-ium & Scraponese is a "plague " we been suffering with the last 40years.

@@MessicksEquip Most people buy multiple times, cry multiple times, but still refuse to just go buy a quality product because it costs a few bucks more. Honestly I don't think a lot of the implements/attachments that Landpride sells are much more expensive than something at the box store that could have been built by several different companies that no longer support their own products is what I'm finding with a lot of stuff. Just wish Landpride published their prices on their website, would save time calling the dealership and bugging a busy salesman all the time.

One other issue you kinda touched on: If you buy a piece of equipment from a big box store, where, exactly, do you take it for service??
Recently, I was looking for a new chainsaw, and thru research, had narrowed it down to Husqvarna and Stihl. Tractor Supply Company happens to sell Husqvarna saws, and there are 3 locations within ten minutes or so of me. But then I got to thinking, WHEN this saw needs service, where do I take it? (for warranty work) Not the store I bought it from- they're just a store.
There just so happens to be a local Stihl dealer also within ten min or so of me, and they DO have a shop on-site. The owner said he does work on Husqvarnas, but isn't an authorized dealer so couldn't do warranty repairs. I ended up buying a Stihl- because that local dealer is an authorized Stihl repair shop. (my first gas saw, so I WILL screw it up at some point, lol) I've also done business with them in the past.
When you look up an address via Google maps and go to street view those images could be 3 years old, so even if you see a building that is vacant at the time the street view car went by doesn't mean that it's vacant now. If you see an office building and nothing like manufacturing/distribution facilities it could be their HQ and the manufacturing/distribution warehouses may be in another place that doesn't have an address easily locatable. I'm just saying that looking up the address on Google maps doesn't really give you all of the information you need. There are many websites that are specific to looking up information about businesses. The companies that run these websites have to pay for this information from the federal/state/local government, so they put it behind an expensive paywall. I say this because me and my sister used to work for a company that would pay $10,000 a month to another company for access to its database of businesses sourced from the government.
Neal, like you've said over and over again. Your marring the service and/or parts department. As a road service technician for a dealer, I see this day in and day out.
If I punch in the address for your new location into Google Street view it still shows me your old location in a completely different town. Is that something y'all can fix by contacting Googles map division?
We've updated all of our data with them months ago. I'm not sure what it takes for the new results to start showing up.
Google Maps showed my business as “temporarily closed” without contacting me, so don’t trust them till you verify.
What about the red flags when selling equipment? Remember, if you get a feeling that the customer may be a democrat or left leaning, its best to charge an extra 25-30% as a "stupid tax". They won't mind! They love paying more!
