If you read drain manufacturers specs, putty denatures the plastic and it cracks.😊
I say, most people don't.
We give a warranty packet to every customer letting them know what their applicable warranties are and that appliances were installed according to manufacturer specifications, what the life expectancy of the part is, and anticipated customer maintenance (water hammer arrestors, water heaters, garbage disposals, having roughly a 10-year service life; run ice to the garbage disposal every month, conduct yearly flush of the water heater, et cetera).
Some sink baskets will come with a rubber seal, and will say not to use adhesive or putty, so I won't, I might put some silicone grease if not prohibited.
I understand there is a debate about plumber's putty or silicone, I do lean towards silicone, but it _does_ need to be applied properly and some people should just stay as far away from a caulk gun as possible.
Most tub and shower basins I have installed have explicitly prohibited the use of plumber's putty and specifically required silicone.
Similarly, when we install a tub we will almost solely use a mortar base, most manufacturers specify mortar anyways (we have seen people literally use drywall mud), but a cultured marble or composite resin shower base is flat and *must* be adhesed to the floor with silicone in lieu of mortar; I had to go back and forth with a builder over the very thing for a couple of hours until the manufacturer came in as a tiebreaker and let him know that any former products are not under warranty if they were not installed with silicone.
If you keep a spray bottle with alcohol you can clean the silicone after you install the drain without incident, no more residue.
I have spent some unfortunate time replacing a drain shoe because someone got silicone into the threads and that's a completely different animal.
Otherwise, a nylon pry bar will break the seal of the silicone for the drain, again with proper clean up, there is no staining/unsightliness.
@mr.hannibal2072 but if you install it not to manufacture specs, then what is your warranty?
@@stephenwalsh8931 I was saying that I *honor* manufacturer's specifications.
Otherwise if we break it, then we fix it.
I had a crew subbing to do a shower install, after it was installed it was squeaking against the studs a little bit, there was no way to get behind it or under it, I had them do a full tear out and reinstall and supervised / assisted to make sure it was done right.
Otherwise, I haven't ever had a call back.
If we did, and it was installation error or against manufacturer specs (which, I would say is impossible), we would surely repair without charge.
@@mr.hannibal2072 I would have to say then, "better then most"
Yup! Advisement accurate, practice and experiences as professional working installation and subsequent later months/years of Service Repairs history proves the argument or skepticism of adhesive, sealants or embedment materials to Pan or Floor Basin applications. Well done Dude! 💯😎👍
What? You don't drive a tractor trailer full of every possible plumbing part you might need to every call?

That’s why real plumbers are worth their weight in gold
Gotta love friday calls and the customer states well ive noticed this problem for about 5 days now

Always the good O Friday calls 😂 good stuff brotha 🤙
I've used silicone when I can let it set into a proper gasket (or have mold release I can spray on the fitting - not the tub or sink unfortunately). Basically works like a rubber seal without the problem of drying and cracking and compressing over time like a rubber seal.

It's never a Friday morning but Friday afternoon, late afternoon.
nice job- i wish so much i could find someone as professional as you
For plastic or fiber tubs and showers, you should always use either latex, or silicone caulking. Because plumbers putty is a petroleum product and is not compatible with them. And fyi, I'm a master plumber with decades of experience .
Friday afternoon is like a disaster magnet!
Nice job sir
It’s never easy on a Friday!
It's never easy ever!
Just sometimes the plumbing gods bless you.
It's easy if you decide to shut your phone off and don't answer it until Monday morning.
Looks great! I would love to see that footage though
Good job
That’s what the guy before you said ITS FRIDAY hahahaha😂 you walked into that one hahaha😊
Nice job
silicone works man, it's the last guy who just installed it improperly. i've seen terrible jobs with putty too.
I use silicone EVERY TIME because it's 100 percent water proof and it does a way better job than plumber's putty. People like to cry when they have to work a little extra hard. If the drain is harder to get out, then that means at one point it was water proof but nothing last forever, not even silicone.
Some shower pans specifically say do not use plumbers putty
It practically stains but it doesn't now does it. You know what will though
Yeah putty😂
putty is better
@@Walczyk better at staining and falling apart
@@jjlpinct silicone is way too hard to remove
I just replaced a drain that had a smaller drain completely siliconed into it. They didn’t want to pull the old one but wanted it too look new
My boss always tells me
"no plumbing on Fridays bud"
And i always have to let him know
"F-CKING FRIDAYS" (what can go wrong, just went wrong)
Now that’s worth every penny
plumber putty is steel to steel read the back of the can but thanks for the call back in 3-5 yeasr
I don't like apartment living, because many times when taking a SHOWER, or after using my toilet, I have heard noises, underneath, toilet or pipes noises, or other showers, or water running in other parts of the apartment complex, during the time I have been SHOWERING washing my body, or there will be water draining out of my tub, even when the drain lever is completely closed, water will still drain OUT when I want to soak my feet in the Tub.

That was a bad silicone job. Probably didn't use enough... You'll be back in about a 6 months because you used plumbers Play-Doh. Plumber's puddy has a notorious side effect of drying and cracking. If the silicone job was done correctly, it would have taken a broken pipe or broken shower pan to get it to start leaking.
I only use silicone, plumber's putty is good but it's not for that kind of application. Silicone is 100 percent water proof when applied correctly, and your right, it doesn't look like they used enough silicone to begin with.
I like to call them f'ed up Fridays.
Yeah customers almost always exaggerate the problem 😂 Glad it could be fixed
Thats cool, do you have the footage from replacing the drain adapter? Thatd be cool to see! Thanks
Floor joist always in the way 😂
We caulk them in and it works every time
I use the 1st style drain you had in floors and the 2nd style you used is missing a rubber so good luck having it not leaking with silicone or plumber's putty 😂😂😂
had to do this, and cut out the ceiling from below
LOL s*** always happens on Fridays. That is the truth last call end of the day.
1/2in crimpers work perfectly to install shower drains
I prefer 3/4 crimper 😊
If they didn't set the shower right it doesn't matter if you use silicone or putty it's going to leak again
I swear I have seen hundreds of videos and read as many comments most MOST say to use silicone, then you got people like this who's like plumbers putty, which is fine, except not with plastic drains!
Oatey calls it a no-calk drain... That's how they spell it... But in the instructions it actually says to use silicone. So yeah I guess it's not a caulk drain technically... But kind of misleading if you ask me
If you watch other channel… they say that the putty dryes from the hot water and cracks… that causes the leak…
Ok but I've heard that silicone is recommended for shower drains because the plumber's putty dries up and flakes due to the hot water. Is this false then?
the putty will dry up and crack. Most manufacturers recommend silicone because shower pans flex when you stand on it, the reason silicone gets a bad rep is because people apply way too much.
@@evanv602the silicone will definitely last longer than that putty.
I need that footage
I spy with my little eye a Klein 11-1. Be honest, this is a safe space, are you moonlighting as a sparky?!?
Why they needed to whipe the silicone off not let it dry
My shower pan instructions clearly stated not to use plumbers putty.
Did it come from China 😂😂😂
Wait. You mean caulk doesn’t last forever and it’s hard to clean off every 10-15 years? No way
IF you're going to do a job, do it right the first time!! That goes for initial install, and any repairs after!!!!
Looks like the fiber washer was against the pan and not the rubber seal. Backwards!
Rubber was too for sure
The next time it leaks put it back with silicone.
Silicone for plastic.
So you would rather Corod your customers tub with putty and ruin good to know hope your customers know as well
NO GLOVES!?
👊🏋️♂️
plumbers putty doesnt work with plastic
You go to a shower drain leak without a drain replacement
"leaking everywhere"...I have said it a million times, don't exaggerate!
Plumbing is lot of tight spots
Part plumber part contortionist lol
Putty no silivone
No sympathy, he's making his $100's per hour
Tired of people recommending and using sili. Use plumber's puttuy, And DO IT RIGHT!!!
Silicone works the best 😂 boo hoo
Good job
