Yes! I still enjoy Vienna.
Fuck yeah
Yes me..

This was the 80’s New Wave
I’m 52 now nothing compares to the 80’s❤
I'm 54, The best years/moments of my life. The highs and the lows packed in the 80's.
I'm 38 and I agree... maybe only the 90s a little bit :)
Let's be real here. There was a lot of shite music in the 80s too.
This was one of the best moments of the entire day. Midge's voice so crystal, and powerful. Amazing.
《ONE OF THE TOP MOST "PHENOMENAL" SONG'S EVER! LOVED IT WHEN FIRST HEARD BACK THEN. AND NOW, AS A SONG LYRICIST ✍️ MYSELF. I APPRECIATE/ADORE/LOVE IT EVEN MORE! HIS VOICE IS STELLAR WOW!🙌🎶🖤》
Catharsis!
I don't know if you were there but I was and almost 40 years later Queen stands out for me, don't get me wrong this is good as this song is an 80s classic but out of all the events of the day this would not hit my top 10 but that's cool as music is very subjective
Holy hell. That sounded absolutely amazing.
Here in 2023, this still sounds amazing after all these years. Some songs are timeless - this is one of them
RIP Chris Cross (July 14, 1952 - March 25, 2024), aged 71
You will be remembered as a legend.
People overlook alot of artists at live aid because of Queen and yes I'm a Queen fan. But this is an incredible performance in its own right.
I see it differently. Music is for everyone. Everyone can pick what they personally like. Starting a discussion about who deserves more attention is silly. Queen has catapulted this concert into the history. Of course the other performances were damn good too. In fact, this one is my favorite. But this performance wouldn't have the attention that has today without the Queen performance either. Thank you Queen, thank you Ultravox.
@@dannyvine3605 Ah ok. Instead of Queen, Hollywood took U2 as a model for a film in which exactly this appearance was staged almost exactly as the highlight there.
But like I said, arguing about "who was better and more important" is stupid. Most were over the top here. I also thought U2 was great.
@@dannyvine3605
ok, but why do you get the impression today that that would be the case?
@@dannyvine3605 ok, i agree, btw i was 5 year old:P. but scince 1990 im in love with 70er-80er music.
@@dannyvine3605 Queen made Sun City absent of course in the movie Bio
Midge Ure seriously under rated musician/arranger/producer/composer. Vienna , in my humble opinion, one of the best songs ever recorded. And BOY did he deliver on the Live Aid stage!!!
Underrated? What planet are you from? In this video he has 70,000 people screaming at him performing at the most famous live music show in history which he organised, he is considered one of the all time greats of pop music, co-wrote the most famous Christmas song ever which is also the second highest selling uk single of all time, released 20 live and studio albums with various bands and solo, 14 singles, has won an Ivor Novello, countless Grammies and BA SCAPs, been given an OBE and is a multi-millionaire! His ratings couldn't be any higher, he is one of the most successful British musicians of all time! Underrated? What are you talking about?!
If i was .classic.
It was a shaky start, if truth be told. That first line sounded like me on a bad day.
@@amazingusername8925 The most famous live music show in history was Woodstock.
Amazing !
Man he knocks the chorus out of the park with that vocal.
Not even a crack. The thing that impresses me most about these performances (that I didn't notice then) is the pure talent. No back tracks. No auto-tune. Pure talent. A vast majority of the "talent" today can't match these guys.
I saw him last year, he's still that good now
@@billieteggers2661 Yeah he is! F'ing amazing.
This is better than the cover..It shows up the artists we have these days something rotten.
@@fritzcolburn How did Pop/Rock devolve (mostly..there are some exceptions)into the dreck spewed out today? The 90's was the last great decade for music..imho!
It's 2023 and am still listening to VIENNA by Ultravox!!
Ultravox had the crowd clapping along long before Freddie arrived - what an outstanding voice
His vocals were fantastic, the clarity the projection, the sustain and he never went off key amazing performance
That first chorus; he turns to the right with a slight smile, knowing he nailed that first line. What a talent.
Yep.
Exactly. So good. Showed nerves in the beginning. Then first chorus and he knew. I got this, I will drive it home. Marvelous.
The smile at 1:40… magic
When he throws his hands up after the 2nd homerun, like he was saying "I fcking did that shit. I wonder if Freddie heard that". Priceless
He sure knows how to project his voice with incredible clarity. He’s a natural born singer. He still sounds the same in 2023. Marvelous.
one of the greatest songs ever......
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
SUUUUUUUUUUUUUURE......!!!!!!!!@@discharge29
Yeah not sure about that claim.
and got beat to Number One by Joe Dolce, Shut up a ya face
Easily one of the best
Such a humble man, totally underrated talent and what a voice!
SERIOUSLY underrated x
What an incredible voice ! Midge Ure at his best !
when time machines are invented im going straight to this event
im sorry give me a call, will join you !
same!
There will be time-machines...where do you think come all that people from? :D
Then I will be seeing you there then!
see you then
The greatest moment of Midge's life captured and will live forever. Ohhhh Viennnaaaaaaa...... sends chills down my spine.
Yes
We should all be so lucky as this guy. Ascended to demigod status for nearly 5 minutes
I can't believe I just found this in 2023!!! I have never heard such control and passion in a voice. He is stupendous!!!
One of the best vocal performances of the entire show, in my opinion. Spine tinglingly amazing. He was immense and it’s my personal favourite. Pitch perfect and a monstrous vocal performance with so much power and emotion. Dancing With Tears In My Eyes is also phenomenal. Of course there’s Mercury but this is unbelievable. Mercury is pure showmanship. Midge is pure vocal perfection.
Midge is touched by god
I love you.
Mercurio es perfección vocal😊😊
Mercury ispure showmanship??!! Are you insane?? Have you listened to Freddies vocal, live show, especially in the 80's?? No?? Than I give you this: please listen to him singing "who wants to live forever" live at Wembley. Or "Save me" and "Somebody to love" in Montreal. If you still come here and say he is only a showman....well.... I live it to you to figure something out. Btw, did you know that even today, great musicians and stars admire FM? No, not for his show, but his V O I C E. Yes. And they have even tried to researsch his voice some years ago. Guess what they found out? That Mr Mercury had a 4 vocal voice, which is at the same range that Pavarotti! (Dont know if you know what vocals range mean, or even who Pavarotti is 🤷♀️) Just saying. Pease snd love you know 🤘🙌🙏👌
@@siwbergfall6623
Absolutely true. I didn’t mean his vocals were not UNBELIEVABLE. But often his showmanship would be what most would remember. Midge was less a showman so you would concentrate more on the vocal performance.
My apologies, I didn’t word it very well. Mercury is one of the greatest singers to ever walk earth. A vocal range so good he could pull off almost any song.
What a fucking incredible voice!
It is! He must dread reaching those notes haha Huge effort.
The name tells all. UltraVox
Sound not so great, but his voice carries it
Incredible voice!!!!!
Best voice of the whole event
Holy shitballs. That is one hell of a vocalist.
I've loved this song since I was a kid and can't believe this is the first time I've heard this version. Shame on me. Amazing performance!!!
me too i was kid at the time too and loved it and this is first time ive heard this live and im blown away
What a voice!
amazing range. extraordinary.
Midge Ure and Ultravox were incredible. How they managed to perform in that heat wave is mind-blowing! It is good to see Midge Ure is recognised for his hard work and support of LIVE AID. Some people praise Bob Geldof only but it was the two of them who deserve the recognition!
Could have removed his trench coat
This performance is hailed by many music professionals and teachers as one of the greatest vocal feats of all time. Midge Ure did this cold, he didnt warm up or soundcheck and still gave this masterful performance. He may not be Freddie Mercury but hes surely up there with him
The only thing that makes Midge less than Freddie is Midge wasn't anywhere near the showman.
how do you know he didn't warm up?
@@tc1817 it's been mentioned several times he had minimal warmup. Some say none.
@@fritzcolburn "It's been mentioned" is not really proof is it?
@@tc1817 if you don't like the answer then do some research. It's how you learn things. Highly recommended.
Brutal. What a track. What a performance. Immortal.
Hands down, one of the best live vocal performances ever recorded:from start to finish,It's pure perfection.Midge is awesome and this version of the song is simply mesmerizing.Goosebumps!
Midge- you don’t always get credit for your role in Live Aid, but some of us will never forget.! We love you in 2020 from California!!
He did alot more than people knew, and stayed in background ,but what a great performance from uvox
A very under rated band, a *very* under rated singer. What a performance!
Not underrated at all
You know something really special is happening when the crowd goes "quiet" at an 80's Live Aid concert...
Yeah it's because it's a crap song
@@trouserbottomdog6120 hey, to each his own. what kinda genre do you like
@@k3rc4 men he likes men :)
How many 80's Live Aid concerts do you think there were?
Back when singers sounded the same live as they did recorded. 👍
Yes exactly that missing the music of daily time.
or even better than in the studio
100%
They still sound as they record ... as they record with autotune LOL
I disagree, he sounds better in live than recorded!!
I was working at live aid as a steward and decided to go to the canteen for my lunch when ultravox come on. I had to put my chicken curry down when this song came on. It gave me goose bumps. My only regret of the day was not getting to see such incredible talent.
Ok. That sucks. You were there and missed seeing it... At least you heard it while it happened. Turns out music is pretty handy that way!
How was the chicken curry?
Wow. What an experience.
No Delhi belly? Lucky bloke!
Feeling blessed for the honour of having grown up with such unmatched artists and their music - when performance was well ahead of attitude. 80s were a very special decade and Ultravox surely was at the helm of it.
How has this only got 12K likes??? Midge is amazing! I was a kid when this was released, this song still gives me goose bumps.
I’ve never seen anyone nail a song so hard. Full body goosebumps
Outstanding performance. No ear buds needed. Hitting all of the right notes & wearing that coat in the hot summer sun. Midge Ure, what a legend 🤩🤩🤩
What a voice Midge Ure has! The real talent behind Live Aid and "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and yet such a humble and brilliant mate. This performance of "Vienna" shows his vocal range and what a great storyteller he is.
Having met him at a party and chatted... bloody lovely bloke. Down to earth etc...
@@garylewis6435 brilliant!!! In interviews he always comes off as lovely and cool.
I've seen Midge about 20x live. Always a great performer, and he ALWAYS hangs out after to talk to fans
Lived in the village I grew up in for a while and by all accounts, was an amazing guy.
@@garylewis6435 puff..beautiful
I believe I read somewhere that some very prestigious music school used his vocal here to show students what absolute perfection sounds like (or something to that effect). I get chills every time I watch this.
Sends shivers. He might have delivered the best vocal performance of the shows. Perfect, from top to tail. Incredible guy.
Berkelee College of Music in Boston was the school! Midge Ure perfect voice!

This definitely a masterpiece and means a lot to me - respect, Mr. Ure. Can't stop listening and watching. In 1985 I was 15 years old...
hello, how are you doing it is nice meeting you here.
Is anyone STILL enjoying Vienna still in 2020?
oh yes
Again July 2020!
YUP!!!!
Me 🙋🏼♀️
Yes, absolutely!
So important to give credit to the crew here. You can see the perfectly timed handover of the viola to allow for the piano than the perfect balance on the second lead vocal mic for the last chorus. Just amazing under pressure.
the audience was literally shell shocked by his vocals and then realization kicked in :) ... ralph fiennes is his doppelganger to the max !
I agree
I can see Ralph
What a voice 😲😲😲😲😲
And Edward Norton!!
This was absolutely the highlight of Live Aid for me! Overlooked but nothing can compare to Midge Ure's amazing voice!
Possible One Of The Greatest Popsongs Ever Recorded.
My Mum is 91 this year and has dementia, but she can still remember me buying this single for her
wow he is truly incredible live. I remember listening to Vienna on a record of my brothers and loved it back then and even more so now that im older to appreciate such talent. 80s had the best talent ever . i want to go back !! This song is one of my most played these days !
The violinist was fighting his fiddle in the heat but by god Midge's vocal was unbelievable! You just know it's one of those moments when the whole stadium is ringing and resonating it back to him and he knows he's in the slot perfectly. Superb, as all the other commenters have said.
What a voice.
True , beautiful voice 👌 , and wonderful band 👍 😃 !
One of the greatest performances of all time
That is a vocal that leaves no room for error. You either nail it or you bomb. Ballsy performance.
I can't stop listening to this. It is magnificent
Midge can always hit the note live. Not many can these days.
I was pregnant then and watch all day now my son is 38 and loves this kind of music 🤔I wonder why 😉
the way he belts out that chorus is phenomenal!
2023 and I still claim: the best song EVER

Saw him last week (Oct 2022) in Bremen and it was same vibe, passion and quality...!!! Had tears in my eyes... Just great!
Best live performance ever!!!! 💖💖💖
So underrated! So timeless!
Such an epic song. Even all these years later
He Sounds live as good as in the Studio... this cannot be said of many Artists 😊👍🌹🏆
Having seen Midge on a couple of his solo performances (just him, his guitar, and a very small venue, maybe 100 people) and he can still belt this out of the park, like he's performing in a stadium. Stunning.
Ed Norton could play Midge Ure in an Ultravox bio-pic.
oh hell isn't that Ed Norton on stage? Ha. LiveAid was one of the very first things I watched on telly when we moved to England. Still a fond memory, what a welcome eh?
Great shout that like
Really? Far more like Kevin Costner for my money.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that.
Exactly!
Without Midge Ure there would have been *no* Band Aid, admits Bob Geldof. So thank you Midge, there should be a "Sir" in front of your name too, mate.
agree
Mike McCormack great photo Mike.
Spot on I'm Irish and it sickened me Geldof got all the credit. Midge ure was paramount in it.
agree
Midge Ure deserves much more than Bob Geldof.
One of the greatest live performances of all time. Rock on
Saying he nailed the vocal is an understatement. My God.
Singing “This means nothings to me” while looking around thinking “this means everything to me”
Ahh, VIENNAAAAAAAAAAAA…
No movement in the crowd because their astounded at the vocals of this man. Top draw!
This is my first time seeing this. I saw the live Aid that day but can't recall seeing every act but seeing this has blown me away. What a great performance by Midge Ure and ultravox. Why is he not a Sir for his part in this.
A logical situation, in fact .Nowadays, in most of the times it's a chaotic mood and many mobile phones.Just stupid, when you're in a concert with all the grands !
Its 2023..i was there but i have never understood why Midge was never credited for an amazing voice!
Man, I'm proud of the singers/musicians my generation had the privilege to witness. Pure talent, masters of their craft! What a voice!
What a song, what a voice, what a rhythm, what a performance. It is incredible to hear such a song. The perfection, I have not more words.
Carrying a note has become a lost art, alas. What a splendid vocalist.
Great performance and voice is spot on! Respect for the guy doing piano and violin. 😎
He hit the Spirit Note and Turned a Purple Huge. I seen this Live on TV when I was a child, I fell in love with this song. I had to wait decades to see and hear it again. Life... what a beautiful trip.
this performance is so absolutely magnificent- i did NOT expect that chorus! enthralling. the amount of breath control he has as well!
His tuning in the chorus is unbelievably perfect!
This means EVERYTHING to me!!! Good Lord, Midge!!!
I remember being 15 and glued to the TV watching this. The next day I went out and got as many Ultravox cassettes as I could afford. 🥰
Saw Midge Ure on his solo tour in 2015, and he sounded as good as ever.
This definitely means SOMETHING to me! Loved this performance.
First time hearing this live version. Amazing vocal and musical arrangement. One of the best live performances ive ever heard.
That smile. He was nailing it AND knowing it.
This is one of the best vocal performances of Ures career.
Midge Ure, always forgotten when it comes to best singers!
Vocal and performance perfection! It may mean "nothing" to you Midge but this means everything to me... Goosebumps throughout and a massive smile on my face, then and now.... OH MIDGE! ❤
Saw him live at the Ulster Hall in Belfast a few months ago, it was worth the money just to hear Vienna played live, magic.
The acoustics are pretty good for an 80000 seat stadium. Midge did a great job, both performing and organising the event.
Walked in the cold air
Freezing breath on a window pane
Lying and waiting
A man in the dark in a picture frame
So mystic and soulful
A voice reaching out in a piercing cry
It stays with you until
The feeling has gone only you and I
It means nothing to me
This means nothing to me
Oh, Vienna
The music is weaving
Haunting notes, pizzicato strings
The rhythm is calling
Alone in the night as the daylight brings
A cool empty silence
The warmth of your hand and a cold grey sky
It fades to the distance
The image has gone only you and I
It means nothing to me
This means nothing to me
Oh, Vienna
This means nothing to me
This means nothing to me
Oh, Vienna
Now that kids, is talent!
He is one of the few artists that haven't lost voice, volume and heart.
Running around on my back the cold, when Midge starts the chorus !! .....Oh, Midge......., why are you such an effect on me ?!!!! ❤❤ ULTRAVOX !!!!! ❤👍
