- The Boomtown Rats performing at Live Aid in front of 72,000 people in Wembley Stadium, London on the 13th July, 1985. The event was organised by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine disaster. Broadcast across the world via one of the largest satellite link-ups of all time, the concerts were seen by around 40% of the global population.

Just imagine, he still got the strength to perform while being so stressed out as the organizer of the event. All respect to him. Sir Bob!
Toooooooo cute. !!!!!!!!
Didn’t he wake up with a lumbago that day as well?
Yes, with his back hurting badly and a huge lack of sleep...(according to his autobiography) - wow...as you said : ✊ respect !
Yes..though life was more simple then. 35 yrs ago. A great time. X😊
"Cocaine's a helluva drug!"
“ I just realized today is the best day of my life.”
And, what a day it was. Organized the greatest rock concert in the history of the world at which Queen might have given the best performance in the history of rock. And, then he almost equaled it with this emotional performance.
Watching this again 37 years later… it’s actually very very good, outstanding performance!!!
Indeed it is. I love the drama and desperation in his voice.
@@dianamckibben8441 The way he pauses and changes the meaning of the lyric to make people think about the meaning of the concert is astounding and profoundly moving. It is an amazing performance.
Along with Queen’s performance at Live Aid, one of the most emotional and incredible performances of all time. I keep going back to watch it again.
No comparison to Queen!!!!!
Seriously? I can’t take this guy seriously. He’s just bad.
You have zero taste this song sucks
I do the same thing, again feeling the hope it seemed we all felt that day, that the world could be a better place and we could be a part of making it so.
That feeling swiftly subsides and I'm back in this horrid timeline. I still have hope that tomorrow will be a better day. We need it to be so for the current and future generations.
@@christar9527 no live aid without Geldolf. Queen better suited for Sun City
This guy done more for humanity than the vast mojority of politicians! Respect Sir Geldof
Well maybe you should go to Africa and ask what they think of Live Aid
Bob Geldof.
He doesn't use that Sir title, he's Irish.
He accepted the honour from your queen and country but not the title.
This is actually True.
This still gives me goose bumps.....that pause , that Wembley roar (the original Wembley of course) ....the crowd singing along....awesome!! ...May 2023
Everone, I hope, knew what this song was about ❤
January 2024
The pause is astonishing. Very, very moving.
Bob is a such a survivor. Nobody should have experienced the tragedy he has endured. One of the most important personalities of our generation. One day he infuriates me, the next I wanna hug him and thank him for being an inspiration. God bless him.
The bit where the pause... Still sends shivers down my spine... And I wasnt even around then
@@annieg1812 I'm so jealous! I was a kid but remember watching it on tv.. this is where my love of these artists have stemmed from! Bet it was amazing weren't it!
If you wernt there how can it still send shivers?
Aside from the real life tragedy that influenced the writing of this song, from an artists perspective,i dont think it gets any more intense than this....thousands of people singing along with your song and at the end when you let them sing the last line, they all do. That buzz from the energy and the rush of the crowd would probably make me cry from overwhelming gratitude.
72,000 people, in fact.
La canción está inspirada en un echo trágico I real Por eso tanta emoción del cantante y del público.
the actor they got to play him in Bohemian Rhapsody, did a bang on job. looked just like him. Thank You Bob for on the greatest events in Rock history.
Bob Gedolf is a hero.
Nobody "nails" him.
He has deserved a Nobel Peace Prize since 1985.
Oh honey, he didn't look like this magnificent person.
music never got any better than that hot day in 85 it is a shame but that was the day the music died
give more thank to midge ure , he was the brains behind it and didnt get the credit he deserved?
He's called Dermot Murphy
Boomtown Rats deserved a crazy ovation. The co-founder of the entire Live Aid project (yes I know everyone knows that). He is so incredibly awesome.
As humanity circles the drain, let's take a moment to remember -- all those years ago -- when the occasional celebrity hippy had courage, relevance and honesty. Thanks Mr. Geldof.
no Michael Jackson did it first
@@annerenwick4322 and sadly, no Michael Jackson did it that day, either. Wonder why? ..Oh yeah, because he was too busy working on his own project. So he turned it down - even after Bob Geldof phoned him personally and directly, and pleaded with him to perform.
Norman Winter, Michael's press agent, even stepped in and pleaded with Michael to perform at live Aid, telling him it could do damage to his reputation if he refuses.
However, Michael still turned it down, which earned him a few snipes and sneers by Society at large.
"Michael is just about living in the studio, rehearsing and recording," his press agent Norman Winter told the New York Times. "I know.. what could be more major than Live Aid? ..But Michael couldn't turn his back on his responsibility to the people he's working with. I regret his decision to this day, and I think Michael regretted it afterwards too, and felt hurt and wounded by the society's criticism towards his inaction. I firmly believe, that had he not declined Bob's invitation, Michael would have galvanised the USA for Africa concert in Philadelphia, and made it as successful and huge as the concert in London." _Michael Winter, NY Times, Jan 20th 2020_

At the end "I just realized today is the best day of my life"
Wonder how many performers felt that this was probably a surreal moment in time?
I don't know about the performers but I know as a teenager at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, it felt like an important moment that I should try to imprint on my memory. There was so much happening between the concert at Wembley, the concert in Philly and all the acts televised from around the world, it would have been easy to forget we were there to support a vital cause, but for the stream of celebrities showing up on stage to make impassioned pleas for everyone watching to give until it hurt. Because we'd all seen the pictures of the children starving and knew They were hurting even while we were at this historic concert.
No,we didn't miss the importance of the day, that single amazing day.
Performance of the day, so much emotion.
Thank you Bob.
Still brings me to tears. It was a truly epic event.

Bob Geldof is cool... and seriously remember, without bob the world 🌎 wouldn’t have never seen those amazing performances by Queen or any other artists! Because of him live aid was put together! And remember Bob also created and wrote (Do they know it’s Christmas) with a couple other guys but he was the brain child......... It was Bob who actually busted his ass to put Live Aid together with that chubby producer (I forget his name). Midge helped him immensely with the single, no doubt. But, Live Aid was Bob's brain child. Yes, he could have been more appreciative of Midge, but Bob worked non stop for months to put this together - so yes, he deserves so much of the adulation.
Edit: Message for Stewart.
Idgaf what people say, I love Bob's singing
Indescribably epic. A moment held in time for all recording devices to capture, thank God.

This is why I kinda admire Bob Geldof. He organized Live Aid with only one other person. Then on the day of the concert, where he wasn’t even supposed to preform, he went out and did it anyway for the cause.
ijcn0jir3nvjn3fjcifn The money was squandered by the corrupt governments in Ethiopia. He has since been active in many charities for the African cause.
1ste day of the week. Work
Haşim Golar a lot of people have a problem with Geldof. He’s built a career by exploiting serious problems for his own self-aggrandizement. If he truly cared about third world hunger he would have followed up after the show, instead of allowing millions of dollars to get into the hands of the same warlords who created the famine. These warlords purchased arms and blocked the roads through which food and supplies could be shipped. He’s been criticized about this for years and usually just responds with a slew of insults and profanities. I think Geldof helped spark the unfortunate trend of “virtue signaling” foundations and charities that prey upon the emotions (and dollars) of the general public in order to enrich themselves, when they SHOULD be lobbying government officials and building coalitions of wealthy donors to enact radical policy changes. Instead he just gets up on stage and sings (badly) and bathes himself in the attention. granted there were some good performances at Live Aid (Queen and U2 of course) but the whole endeavor reeks of 80’s white guilt and naivety.
You should do some research, the whole thing was midge ure's idea and when he was approaching artists to get them on board he spoke geldof and good old Bob stole the idea and froze midge out. Geldof hadn't had a hit for ages and he used the live aid thing to restart his ailing career. He has never credited midge for his idea and has got very wealthy of the back of others giving their time for free. Midge on the other hand has always been very dignified about the whole thing. Don't make the mistake of thinking geldof is a good guy, he isn't, Bob geldof only puts himself out for one person, Bob geldof.
@@alexanderfooy723 if you do some research you will also see that he has made a fortune from the people he pretends to care about.
That moment at 3:05 when he sings "The lesson today is how to die" then simply pauses, letting that sink in. Geldof was and is a great showman and humanitarian, doing what he could to help those starving in Ethiopia. No, the money didn't make it to the people dying for want of food and clean water because of corruption, but he and so many others freaking TRIED. You can see it in his performance here - his back was killing him, he was in such pain, but damned if he was going to miss the greatest show of his life.
ijcn0jir3nvjn3fjcifn Geldof has actually been involved in quite a lot of work for Africa since this.
The money made it, at least most of it. He details who distributed it in an interview on you tube. Oxfam was one.
@Haşim Golar greatest character in rock history? Lmfao.

Dedicated to my English friend Michael David Curley who just passed away. He lived in Atherstone UK and turned me on to this video. Rest in peace Curley.
Bob, the brains behind this huge concert Live Aid, salute !
Thank you for this great musical and historical event, Sir Bob
The truly amazing thing in 1985 was that I was able to hear "Live Aid" on the radio. I lived in the mountains of Upstate NY and we didn't have cable or OTA tv, but we did have FM Radio!
This performance still gives me goose bumps. Can someone nominate Bob Geldof for the Nobel Peace Prize?
A little late wouldn’t you say?
Lord knows he has worked his whole life for others. This song still breaks my heart.
Nah, mate
No East Coast Stitcher, it wouldn’t actually be too late. People are nominated for their recent contributions to the planet, and also a lifetime of good for things accomplished in a lifetime.

Sir Bob Geldof - I love his music, lyrics and voice. As a child, I was growing up on "Vegetarians of Love". Now, I've got his full solo discography and I'm still growing with this.
Still brings me to tears. It was a truly epic event.
it was........one of the most memorable days in my life. rats were epic as were so many others. todays music is poor by comparison, we've lost so much.
I wish i saw it but I was only born in 98', i remember the first time i watched it on dvd when i was like 5 and ive loved queen and this song ever since. Even on dvd it was magical, I wish there was events like this now. The thing is theres so many charities asking for money everyday, you give them a fiver or whatever on occasion and go about your day, and it probably goes toward the CEO's salary, there nothing magical about that. Also the music just isnt the same anymore. I think the One love concert was good, coldplay and liam Gallagher were great and made the concert in my opinion, still nothing on Queen though!
I'm reading this through the tears in my eyes right now...
I was lucky enough to be there. It was amazing
❤❤❤Shivers all over listening to this after so many years .😍😍😍😍😍 THANK YOU .👍💋💋💋💋
One of the greatest songs of all time.
Bob and the boomtown rats were part of the punk movement of the 70s. The punk movement and rebellion came from a place of passion. That same passion that created so many epic songs and albums from so many wonderful people is exactly what drove Bob and Midge Ure to Live Aid. Passion, not filling out a million forms and toeing the line as today's world seems to have become. Passion gave the world colour, vibrancy. The beurocrats just make everything black and white.
This is the first time I've listened to this "song". Sounds like a Jim Steinman faux operatic opus. A regular guy would wince if he had to sing something like this overblown vaudeville ditty.
I don't think it's got anything to do with bureaucrats. There was as much bureaucracy in the 80s as there is now. It's the young people that have changed, there's hardly any rebellion left in them. Life's too comfy and when you spend 80% of your free time on your mobile phone, looking at things that the algorythms suggest you should watch, you lock yourself into commercialism. You don't want to change the world, you want the new iPhone, so instead of doing something meaningful you do something stupidly outrageous on CZcams to get money from the views. People toe the line because they have allowed themselves to become slaves to marketing algorithms, not because of anything the government has done. Commercialism has won.
@@johnnyenglish583 Aaaaagh yes, the great "anti-commercialist" punks doing butter ads and giving rights to use their songs in Levi's jeans ads or in the case of the chap right here in front of us, Bob Geldof, changing the order of the lineup at the last second, fricking up the entire scheduling and fricking over his own co-organizer and "friend" Midge Ure of Ultravox, so that him and his band could come on and perform with the royals in the stands in order to secure his knighthood and their good graces. Such pure, great, "meaningful" rebellion indeed. There's plenty of really good music being made by young people today, you just don't hear any of it cos you're busy idolizing these old f***s that sold out all the ideals they once stood for long ago. "There's hardly any rebellion in them"????? No??? Young people today rebel and protest all day long, probably a lot more than you ever did. It's just that when they rebel or protest about something you "original rebels" call them "snowflakes", "woke", "SJW" or whatever other BS names you Boomers make up for people you don't like. Or simply "disrespectful to the elders"(oh, the irony!). Which is funny cos Baby Boomers were and still are probably the most snowflake-y generation to ever exist. Look at who's running the world and who lead it into this dreadful state it is in, it's you and your generation. The future is now old man.
One of the best songs ever written. Bob sings this with passion.
His voice is like a mix of Bowie & Jagger, looks like a mix of them as well
It really is.
That day I get my hight school grad, than watched live aid on tv and all was so light, easy, magic...just the 80s
Definitely one of the most beautiful songs ever written!!!!
I think the beauty in it is that it's not an all out protest song like they could easily have written. It tackles the topic softly rather than attacking the person and focuses on the effect these shootings have on other innocent people.
Your a fucking moron!
@@brothernature1040 Silly comment. Geldof wrote the song to highlight the awfulness of school shootings. If you possessed a brain you may just just have grasped this.
Beautiful? It’s about a kid shooting up her school. Geldof making her famous, and the crowd cheering on “how to die”. It’s not beautiful.
eh its a song about a mentally ill child who shot up her school
A lot of people would argue that if anyone else had been a part of making Live Aid, the Rats wouldn't have even been on, let alone a 20 minute spot. But I think on the day, Bob and the Rats were just about as big as anybody else, because people just wanted to see Bob.

There are so many great 70-early 80 you lose them. I watch a old “House” episode and he tinkled the piano part and it brings this out of the webs of my mind.
This song is fucking brilliant. All the lyrics have a dark meaning yet so powerful , the piano is immense. Incredibly well written song, what a fucking tune.
You guys even if Bob Geldof's voice is rough that doesn't mean that the performance is bad. In fact it completely fits with his usual style and the cynical tone of the song. Many praised singers don't have a clear angelic voice, like Brian Johnson and Kurt Cobain for example. Or even Neil Young, who purposefully sings slightly out of tune cause it's his style.
And shame on those who say that The Boomtown Rats didn't belong on that stage with the many other great bands. Their songs are catchy and meaningful, and they definitely pass on a strong energy to the audience. It's sad that the band is so underrated.
Naomie Gauthier bob also organised it so deserves as much credit as anyone

Naomie Gauthier u can’t compare bob and kurt Kobain there just not comparable and bobs bad at singing

Think of it this way..
One day in 1985 Bob wakes up and turns the tele on to see a humanitarian crisis unfolding in front of him. At this point the Rats are no longer considered relevent and compared to many, his is a small voice.
Through perseverence and force of will he gathers together the musical royalty of his day. From all over the world. To come together in a single generation defining moment.
This is the moment one man literally made a difference. Without Bob, literally tens of thousands of people wouldnt have lived to see 1986.

Sir Bob Geldof is a brilliant humanitarian & "The Fine Art of Surfacing" is an awesome album... It remains one of my favorites from 1979... The Boomtown Rats made a serious mark on the music of the time... They are a gift from Ireland... And this song was quite popular... the sad thing is that after all this time the news of students shooting up schools has become a regular event... at the time it was unusual...
A skid mark maybe
Fully agree on the great work of Sir bob Geldof But, another gift from ireland? The four geniuses behind the band U2. Love them both.
Even on Mexican schools are a thing now.
I agree with most of everything you said except for the part calling him Sir. No Irishman should be called Sir as uk is entirely different from Ireland where Bob was born an bred.

So many negative things have been said about Geldof. Truth is, that Geldof and Midge Ure created Live Aid for all the right reasons and in doing so gave us the world's most amazing rock concert ever. And over 30 years on we are all still talking about it and still watching it on CZcams. I say nice work Geldof ...

I love this song so much! People need to remember live aid wasn’t just queen! I also love the fact he wrote the song ‘do they know it’s Christmas time’ another favourite of mine
Midge ure had far more to do with the writing of band aid. Geldofs idea but Midge ure even had to tell Geldof to stfu as he was interfering with the writing and recording of band aid.
Midge wrote Do they know.. Bob wrote just a few lyrics.
The lyric of “Soon we’ll be learning that the lesson today is how to die” at 3:00 with the flag of USA flying high as the crowd goes wild is just perfect.
