He's the friendliest evil mastermind of all time. He's like Lex Luthor if he wasn't an asshole.
I second that notion!
He was truly brilliant
or bald
Totally true
Well, Luthor *did* look like Hank in that Supergirl/Luthor Special.
I love how even in the middle of getting infiltrated by enemy troops he's still trying to make a good impression and cares about his workers.
Let's be honest Hank is the boss everyone wants.
That's a megalomaniac I could get behind.

So what's your phone number?
Why would I want to call myself?

Dan Fawaz a sign of excellent management is telling your employees to kill some soldiers and kick back some grenades when they leave!
Homer has actually been productive at a few jobs. Like the bowl-o-rama. It's just a matter of enjoying your work. And i don't think anyone could enjoy their work with a boss like Mr. Burns. Except Smither's obviously.
That’s charisma right there
And you know when Hank asked Homer to stay and they'd go bowling, he 1000% meant it
This is why the Simpsons movie is 100x better if you imagine Russ Cargill was Hank Scorpio in disguise just trying to get back at Springfield for taking Homer away when he genuinely cared for him.

Homer successfully got James Bond killed on two separate occasions.
That's the only reason Bond is still alive in our universe, Homer Simpson doesn't exist here(Well, there in the Bond Movie universe, you know what I mean).

Hank Scorpio was originally going to be the villain of the Simpsons movie, but the writers changed him up because he was too likeable be a serious villain.
Yes
A villain doesn't need to be mean, think about the classical disney villains like Hades
@@kyutwoloop5737 it might also have to do with his relationship with Homer.
well thats the biggest mistake they made, hes not a villain, hes a foil, he brings out homers best productive side, he should have been a side character who happened to be caught by the dome and was focused on his science lab and was actually using the dome to further his evil activities while treating homer great while the town itself turned on homer forcing homer to leave, but making homer come back to not only save the town, but have a moral dilemaa between breakign the dome and helping Scorpio, and the best part is, he could have had his freind Hank back and maybe found a compromise where scorpios plan allowed the town to prosper with a dome and a underground highway...
and the government then comes and takes the dome because they realize the towns making money from it and not paying ataxes
@@kyutwoloop5737 you...you know that Hades wanted to kill a baby, right?
For a character that only appeared in one episode, Scorpio sure is great, He literally bleeds charisma.

Most young hip modern workplaces are like this. That's the hook dose to get you dependent and trust them. But don't be fooled, it is still a selfish endeavor, and at it's very core, manipulative capitalism.

I would kill anybody Hank ask me to kill without question. As Hank is a really cool guy, he maybe a villian but he is still an excellent boss.
Homer did kick a grenade back toward where it came from. I like to imagine that, in a final, sad act of appreciation, Homer killed several people with that blast.

The Dallas Cowboys line truly resonates. Nowadays employers take a dim view if you have aspirations or ambitions outside of their company. Here, Scorpio is immediately supportive.
Plus the Denver Broncos had a massive turn around around this time so Homer would have actually made a lot from that. In fact in the comics Scorpio asks about the Broncos and Homer said after they won the Super Bowl he made enough to pay off his tab at Moe's.
"I keep expecting to get the bum's rush"
"We don't have bums in this town, Marge, and if we did, they wouldn't rush, they'd be allowed to go at their own pace"
I can't quite put my finger on why, but I enjoy this line most of all
It starts out with such a harsh expectation and then takes such a benevolent twist. What's not to love?
All their bums were converted to mailboxes
It's funny that such an evil villain would actually be the nicest, most considerate, down-to-earth boss.
An accurate indictment of corporate America, that a megolomaniac would be the best boss that Homer ever had.
Michael Martin Corporatism in general really. His design is partly modelled on Richard Branson.
How else do you think they get their employees to do evil?

For me, it's "Let 'em go! Stay here with me, we'll go bowling!" Dudes absolutely rock!
😂 And you just got to KNOW that Hank was serious when he told Homer that...lol

When he says for Homer to stay and they will go bowling you know he means it. This was truly a classic character.
I don't think I get it :/
Just that he's genuine. Some people just talk like that, but they don't actually want to spend time with you. Hank seems like the real deal, he's a busy guy but he is genuinely interested in Homer's happiness and friendship
No idea why I didn't get it at the time, it makes complete sense now. Btw I stumbled upon my own comment up there by complete accident.
The actor who voiced Hank Scorpio was also the voice of Marlin from Finding Nemo.
And also, in the Simpson World, Russ Cargil and Brad Goodman
That's why he's so awesome

Hank Scorpio was the first megalomaniacal madman who I ever hoped would succeed in their plan to take over the world. Yeah he was a super villain, but he was still a really nice guy.
Seems like he'd be pretty hands-off as long as we did what he said on the occasion that he found something worth his attention.
How is he a supervillain? All he's doing is taking down the U.N.
"With his plot to rule the world and his employee's health!"

Indeed. I agree.
I’ve worked for a Hank Scorpio and it’s all you think it could be
Homer’s casual grenade kick is hilarious.
I love the bit where Hank asks Homer if he'd ever seen a guy say goodbye to a shoe and Homer says "Yes, once" referring to seeing Hank just doing that 2 seconds ago, always makes me laugh.
That's not what he was referencing. We don't know what Homer was referencing, that's the joke. Hank asked that question because the obvious answer would have been "no" but for some reason, Homer had seen it before. It makes you think "LOL when?!?"
It's similar to another joke in another episode where they show the birds going crazy at a bird sanctuary, attacking people, and Hans Moleman is on the phone where he asks "I need the biggest seed bell you have... ... ...no, that's too big." The joke is that it was an unexpected response. We don't know what the person on the other end of the phone line said, but apparently they quoted a size that was so big that it was "too big" to stop thousands of birds from massacring people. It makes you think "LOL how can it be too big?!?"
@@OriginalChaosLord I disagree and actually think it's funnier that Homer would be referencing what he just saw. Unless you're Matt Groening then I'm not convinced :--)

@@gustavoamorim5189 As a French person, I agree
If Harry Shearer ever gets too old to play Mr. Burns, then they ought to make Scorpio the new owner of the power plant.
Burns would regard Scorpio as one of those " Damn beatnik kids"
funny thing about Hank is, he took over the east coast meaning he wouldn't have reason to go to Springfield no more. he's too successful that not even the UN can stop him. he values his employees so the morale is extremely high and he's a great leader.
I love how Albert Brooks has played one of the most kind-hearted and the evilest people in The Simpsons with this and the movie. Just goes to show that The Simpson's really valued him.
The ironic thing is that he plays Hank Scorpio as the nicest boss ever who happens to be a super villain, but he also plays Russ Cargill who is mad with power but runs the EPA; an organization that is intended to help the environment. I wonder if his casting in the movie was intentional for that reason.

The scariest thing about this is that the way homer casually completes minions tasks means he would probably make a great super villain henchmen
Lmao yeah. He DID help recapture James BONT, after all. Lol
Frankly Scorpio shows the benefits of not doing the whole, killing Minions for failures that may or may not be their fault thing. Scorpio is an extremely kind, encouraging leader, which leads to high morale and greater efficiency.
Scorpio encourages Homer in a way no other boss he ever had did and lest we forget; Homer's motivational techniques were working and increasing efficiency in his department. I mean there's a reason the Doomsday Device was way ahead of the Weather Machine and Germ Warfare Divisions.
Compared to so many companies today, Globex would be rated so highly to work for, world domination goals or no.
no wonder why Homer really likes him. also the reason why Hank Scorpio became successful is because of how he treats Homer with respect and dignity. not to mention Homer did bring him a lot of good luck like subduing the agent who infiltrated in his facility, unconsciously helping Hank by kicking a grenade to save his life from being shot, killing almost all the soldiers standing on his way, making him rethink of his decisions to actually be a better villain, and in exchange he did give Homer a generous gift even though it wasn't the one he wanted but it's a start.
I doubt if the writers do bring him back it'll be as good as this one.
Easily the best one-off character in the show's history. I honestly hope they never bring him back because I don't think they could write him as good a second time. He's lightning in a bottle.

I've always been fascinated with the idea of what evil geniuses, and they're underlings, do in their off the clock real world lives. Their families, where they like to go to dinner, what appointment television they have.
I was the safety officer for a facility for several years, so it makes me kind of notice safety stuff. I always love an evil genius's lair having lit "EXIT" signs, fire extinguishers in the proper places. They are evil genius criminals who break every possible law, but their facility is up to OSHA standards.

I love how at the end, Home casually just kicks away the grenade that was thrown at him. He kicked it in the same direction where it came from, so Homer probably killed those guys. But to be fair, the guys who attacked Hank (and Homer) may not have been "good" guys. Hank must have lots of enemies, including other supervillains.
Hank Scorpio: A man just living in the moment and enjoying every minute of it!
Seriously, the wholesomeness of this man! I'd honestly kill for him!

I actually had a boss who was as good to me, as Hank Scorpio was to Homer. Morale was extremely high in our mail room because of how he treated his employees.

this man is comedy gold and the manic energy is incredible one of the best characters ever created by the simpsons
I like that Scorpio is just a little too entheusiastic. Makes him endearing.
You know, this is singlehandedly one of the most and important episodes of the simpsons when coupled with all the others. Homer's life, and dignity, finally makes sense, he is functional, has a boss who loves him and is a good freind to all his employees and insists on treating them as humans... or atleast he does with Homer because he actually likes Homer for some strange and exotic reason, or perhaps because Homer is so sincere and upfront most of the time.
And Homer gives up his happiness, sanity, job fulfilment and personal friends that make his own life better because his family is so unhappy at the shear functionalidy of the town. Its a paradise that makes his life feel normal finally, but for others its too perfect. and perhaps that is why this is Homers greatest sacrifice for his family ever. And the symbolic nature of every father ever giving up something that made their life make sense and fulfilled and happy on some base industrial and livelihood nature, for the sake of his families happiness and cries to move somewhere else.
He gave up his nirvana for his family... how genesis of him, how Angelic and human

@@VoltairesRevenge i.. uhh... havent actually had a film class.... i just watch lots of youtube reviews and try to understand how other people evaluate things
but if it must be said.... i think, i personally felt that this episode was... weird... it was because, it was the one homer centric episode i liked as a kid that didnt feel wrong to me, it did feel like a bond villain, but it gave me a view point into a world of evil doing that said, not everything is about good or bad, sometimes its just about how you treat other people. And from an empiric, good vs bad your going to say, they are murdering bond, we dont know who the good guy or bad guy is in this, we assume, we know, but we dont know if Scorpio is entitled to that money and got screwed or ruined by a international effort to destroy him, maybe he was actually a very generous and kind person who was trying to create life extension tablets that would cure every disease and even completely remove all the effects of aging from people for extraordinary thousand plus year life spans, and the global military industrial complex said no, and ordered him and his company exterminated to preserve the world population balance, both would have valid arguments to why thier viewpoint was necesary, but the scorpio as a bad guy sudeenly becomes a kind hearted guy trying to make a world without suffering, where as the military leaders are trying to make a world where thier isnt critical overpopulation and undying hordes stripping the world forests bare and leaving nothing edible as everyone slowly suffers the ravages of starvation and theirs no animals or wildlife or bushes or trees left or even insects because we ate evertyhing, all however many billion of us were there after 10 to 30 years of no one dieing and everyone being in thier 20s in all effectiveness. with perfect health we need other things, like advanced techology and food replicatiaion and then we are capable of surviving, and the military thinks about that, the government plans for that, but people just feel pain and desire and drive to accomplish those goals any way possible to fulfill thier lonely lives.
In that context, evil and good become different things, we dont even know if scorpio was producing some sort of evil product he sold to support his attempts to take over the world, but we do know he ran a perfect little corner of society, and a haven where he didnt have to have Homer, but he did, and Homer tried to respect and show concern back. I think thats why i liked the Scorpio episode. Because it wasnt a selfish episode, it was a bizare episode where we dont know if it wias for the greater good, or the greater evil, but people werent just hording things, something seriously strange was happening, and it was a single self contained half hour of amazing world building... and i was so young and just fascinated by it and wanted more of it. but we never got more.... but homer got a football team at the end... and scorpio got the east coast i think... it was very fascinating... or was it the west coast? i forget but i do remember what great excitement and anticipation i got when i realized how great and fun that world became when what was ordinary boss stuff turnned out to be either generic good guy bad guy stuff, or the opening to a whole world of adventure and stories, what would Scorpio have done with the money? maybe he just wanted to make society function better

Stoneman180190 Hey !! I just left my resume and I am crossing my fingers to get the job, how come are you calling him a "supervillain" ? He is awesome !!
I mean, how do you think every supervillain have their loyal henchmen? Because they are nice to them and give them a great pension plan. Who cares if their boss is evil and wants to take over the world? He´s a nice person after all and he cares about you personally. Frankly the world is a better place with your evil boss in charge, because he looks after his loyal subjects well being.

Hank Scorpio is one of The Simpson’s greatest characters :) he is one of the few people we meet who actually believes in Homer.
I always felt so sad for Homer in this episode.
All of the families problems could’ve been solved.
Bart: work harder and actually put in some effort for once.
Lisa: get some antihistamines.
Marge: spend some quality time with your baby.
See!? Homer rules and deserves to be happy.
@el padrino Homer was never a car designer, no matter how much Herb believed in him. Homer is a factory boy, a simple man who only manages to get by in the job he has due to familiarity. Thats why he succeeds under Hank Scorpio.
He knows how the business works and gets to just express his views that went unheard under Burns and Smithers.
Yeah this was a case where I didn't have a lot of sympathy for the others, because ultimately it means whenever they complain about the situation in Springfield I remember that in this episode, they chose to go back to it. They chose to return to the crumbling house, the underfunded school, the pollution and the problems of Springfield.
Because as you say, there were fixes for all of these things, I mean Marge could have joined a book club or something like that (which she did in another episode), antihistamines should have gotten Lisa back in order and as you say, Bart isn't actually stupid he's just lazy and uninvested; if he put in the effort he could get out of the remedial class before too long.
And notably none of them even try to fix their problems, instead they all simply opt to retreat to the familiar mediocrity of Springfield.
I mean we know why it had to happen, so the show could revert to status quo, but I never thought it made Lisa, Bart or Marge look all that good.
I feel like you kinda missed the point of the story tbh.
Though i’ll admit, the episode only had 22 mins tk reset everything to the status quo in the end, so it never gave enough time to show how its affecting them, homer was the main focus, but since the story was about how the entire FAMILY feels, you’d think they’d give more time to show their reasons and success and failures at trying to make things work.
But anyways, the whole point of the episode was that part of what made homers life great and worth living, WAS his family. If they’re not happy, he can’t fully live a comfortable life without them being happy too.
So this was never fit to be the “perfect setup for homer” because what makes homer happy isn’t entirely based around just himself.
This was always just how older homer was portrayed.
Dude’s a selfish, lazy asshole but a good guy at heart (and a big softie). Ironically his insane selfishness tied in perfectly with his love for his family. Since he loved them that much, he’d do tons of stupid shit to keep them around cause it keeps him happy, despite not benefiting from it beyond dopamine boosts and emotional attachments
@@theradionicrevival8068 Whilst I don’t think I missed the point of the episode, I do think you make a very good point and make astute judgements based on cannon character points 👍😄
Yeah, Bart definitely would've been better off, if he would actually doing some studying.
Marge could also make new friends with some of the other housewives, with Maggie meeting some of the other babies.
Lisa's could atleast try the antihistamines first, if they don't work, maybe also a facemask? Though less ideal.
3:50 The coat gag gets me every time
"Best of Hank Scorpio", shows nearly every scene he's been in, making the title MORE accurate
Funny thing is this is honestly the best job Homer's ever done. Hank's that good of a boss.
The most insane thing about this episode is that despite having Homer as an employee, the company was able to function at optimum levels.
Alex homer was actually productive when he worked at globex. And it was because hank gave him the motivation. That was the key to this episode
Alex maybe mr burns was right to hire homer afterall
The joke of the episode was that bosses that motivate their employees and are actually kind to them and treat them with respect are so rare and far between that when they actually are they seem uncanny to a degree that they look like they have something bad hidden behind their back.
That shows how great of a leader Scorpio was, even who everyone else says is unproductive, he could make productive.
@@acdclife94 yup his department was way ahead of the weather machine and biological warfare division.
"Ever see a guy say goodbye to a shoe?" "Yes once"
Hank Scorpio is a very charismatic guy. He knows what he wants and does what it takes to get it.
Scorpio needs his own spinoff
+Spellbinder Yeah, because spinoff shows are great! /s
Isn't The Simpsons a spinoff of the Tracy Ulman Show?...
@@atticus5106 It wasn't a spinoff in the normal sense. You might think of The Simpsons as a spinoff of those shorts, but when people think of spinoffs, they generally think of a character or characters on a show getting remade into their own show. That was different with The Simpsons, because those shorts were characters independent of Tracey Ullman's show that were featured between Tracey's sketches.
I know I am going out on a HUGE limb saying this, but I submit that Hank Scorpio was the best character ever on this show.
Man... it's close, but I propose an epic tie between Scorpio and Larry Burns. What say you to that?
Season 8 is probably the best for guest/one-off characters, seeing as it has Scorpio, Larry Burns, Poochie, John the Gay Man and Grimey. All of them in the top 30 episodes.
Crazy vaclav is my favourite
Karl, Homers gay secretary when had hair was, a-mazzzing!
Fun fact, the guy who did Hank's voice (Albert Brooks) was Super Dave's half brother in real life. Or for any of you Curb fans, the Funkman's real life half brother.
''homer, on your way out, if you wanna kill somebody it would help me alot'' this line always kills me LOL
Then you helped Homer do Hank a favour.
Love Hank Scorpio. He's like the best billionaire boss ever. 😁
As a child I HATED that he had to go back to Springfield, now I see that it was better for his family, but still..................
He should have stayed, we could have gone bowling :(
@@hankscorpiouk can i join your company
His family is a bunch of assholes, Homer was actually happy working for Hank but as usual his family ruined a good thing
It always bugged me how his family never even tried. Like:
Marge? Does she really only define herself by being housewife? WTF. Get a god damn hobby. In fact she's supposed to be an artist, so why not get to painting again. It's just pathetic.
Lisa? See a doctor! I've got hayfever too and I have medication against it. Again, pathetic.
Bart is the only one with legitimate problems that could and should be addressed by his parents talking to the school.
They could have lived a lot better life and afforded a lot more, including better education for their children.
Forget his family! It takes at least three months to adjust to a move, and at least a year to finally be happy with it. If I worked for Hank Scorpio, my family would either suck it up or live in Springfield while I visited them once or twice a month.
I, for one, welcome our new Globex Overlord.
Especially with his power of motivating fucking HOMER for fucks sake.
In Kent Brockman and that was my two cents
Everything about this episode is fabulous. Hank is one of the BEST characters ever!!
"Sorry it's not in packages" lol. Something about that idea of him just having random sugar in his pockets it's a perfect out if left field gag. It doesn't make sense, but it makes since that he could have sugar in his pockets.
He's the boss that we all dream of having.
It doesn't have to be a dream
Hank Scorpio still hiring ?
I am that boss.
I feel bad for who ever ate half of his lunch.
Possibly both.
I’ve often wondered if that really was the problem upstairs or whether he was covering with a story that he knew Homer would buy.
probably that villainouse James Bont!
@@kisbie I don't think he would lie about that. He straight up killed people and causes terror right in front of Homer. It also goes with his personality that he would react like that to someone eating his lunch.
This episode is by far my favourite one and Hank Scorpio is the reason for it. He´s just so damn likeable.
I'm a little disappointed we didn't get to see more of hank, but at the same time glad because as of now all scenes with him are amazing
Literally the best episode of the Simpsons and entirely because of this character.
I doubt you would say that if this episode aired 20 years later in Season 28. The writer of this episode was spoiled from having a good reputation and forgot to make Homer and Hank carry the episode's plot instead of the other Simpsons who were bored with Cypress Creek and wanted to move back to Springfield. If you want to see a version of this episode's plot done right with less spoiled writers who had a bad reputation, see Teen Titans Go's Cool School. I swear that episode did more with Rose Wilson in 11 Minutes than this episode did with Hank Scorpio in 22 minutes. They didn't have Hank Scorpio carry the plot, instead he just exists to pander to James Bond fans and distract viewers from this episode's lack of a decent plot from the other Simpsons. October 28, 2016, 10:22pm
Kumiko worked better as a good new character in Married to the Blob from Season 25 because she actually carried the episode's plot, whereas Hank Scorpio didn't carry the plot of You Only Move Twice. This was a better time for things like this because The Simpsons was going stale and having a funny new character (if they made You Only Move Twice today 20 years later) wouldn't be too effective. October 28, 2016, 10:25pm
Adam Kalb I respectfully disagree.
HillDueceua OH SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTT
I know it's been two months, but you seem like you're a fan of that shitty show.
I think I know now why all the Bond Supervillains like Blofeld, Goldfinger, Stromberg, Drax, Trevelyan or Carver had so many loyal henchmen: Maybe they were just really awesome employers = Awesome Company-sponsored yearly BBQs, several weeks of paid vacation, company-funded homes close to work and them giving their employees the feeling they accomplish something important, that they're a vital part of something bigger. Sure, when you fuck up, you''re not simply fired but fed to the sharks, but still...
+Schwatvogel Actually they kill their henchmen saved for their most determined loyal ones like Oddjob or high paid ones like Jaws. Scorpio just treats his employees both in his front company and his lair with respect and expect them to do the same to their fellow employees. Hence why Homer was on friendly terms with one of Scorpio's top security guards.
+Schwatvogel thats what the joke all about.....
Cracked after hours did an episode about this topic exactly
+Schwatvogel And you got business hammocks. Don't forget hammocks :-)
+lxCRON1Cxl I love that series and that episode.
We don’t have “best of” reels at Globex, Marge. And if we did, they would all involve me in some way.
I love that Hank Scorpio is very clearly insane even on a day-to-day level and is still ten times the boss/villain Mr Burns could only dream of being.
Scorpio: _"Ever say goodbye to a shoe?"_
Homer: _"Hee hee. Once."_
"ye-hes, once."
Still probably the best line John Swartzwelder ever wrote.
"Ever see a guy say goodbye to a shoe?"
Getting the quote right makes it significantly better.

I don’t get it
@@unicornbarfingrainbows7599 Homer just saw a guy saying good bye to a shoe, so it counts as once
He was truly a great character, should have made him a permanent, would have hardly ever gotten old.
Would have worked great against Mr. Burns.
but its a guest star...albert brooks....you cant expect to get him every week....hes kind of a big deal....and you cant have hank scorpio voiced by anyone else....it just wont work...sorry to dan hank or harry but they cant match the charisma of albert....also he kind of would clash with mr burns...he was a great one off character....
Making him permanent would be the very thing to have diminished how great he was. Please, do us a favor , and don't become a freaking producer.
infernocanuck That's a bit mean of you. You could have stopped after the first sentence (which made your point clearly- and which I agree with), but you had to proceed to make a personal attack as well..
Nope. Just gave him some career advice. You can tell me "Don't be a freaking software engineer" because the lack of my skill or understanding, and I won't take offense. You're far too sensitive, there, white knight. There's no poor innocent damsel for you to defend here.
you got to love this guy. he's one of the few bosses gave Homer respect and encouraged him on his hopes, dreams, and ideas
So true along with that military general who was fond of homer when he joined the navy.
This man's the human embodiment of chaotic good
I don't know he is willingly evil so I think he's more chaotic evil but is just a real nice guy about it.
Hank Scorpio: The Boss everyone wants to have.
Even if he’s a supervillain
best one-off character in animated history
Don’t forget Karl though on the episode when Homer gets hair!
lol wtf is wormwood doing here
I might be wrong on this, but I think I remember reading somewhere that for the Simpsons Movie, they considered making Scorpio the main villain but then realised that once he found out his plans endangered Homer, he'd give up and wouldn't want to go through with it.
*If* this is true, it just adds to the heartwarming nature of Hank Scorpio.
This is how Michael Scott sees himself.

I'd just hate for that special kinda friendship to be broken. He was too fun getting along with Homer. XD
why this legend of a character never became a regular on the show I will never know.

If you're not really into voting, Hank would make a great emperor.

truly loved Scorpio's character, such a great episode and in all honesty preferred some of the older episodes to what we have now.
Albert Brooks is such a rare talent. Deeply funny in this yet equally brilliant in stuff like Drive where he plays a dead-eyed, depressed psychopath who is as interesting as any of the protagonists.
