  • Recently Redcat released a set of aluminum high steer knuckles for the Gen7. I installed a pair and measured the steering angles compared to my previous free/cheap upgrades. Are the new knuckles an improvement? Yes and no. Watch the video for the details!

    I was told a great tip for diy bearing press.
    Its just a hex head bolt. Two washers and a nut. Not nyloc type.
    Then put a washer on the bolt insert through bearing out the other side add the other washer and nut. Then crank it down slow and precise.
    It works for any size just use washers to suit.
    I wish there was a tip like it for removing encrusted blown out bearing races.
    My best trick so far is if i can hammer a peice of cheap plastic handle through that will compress and snag the race on the way out.
    They should think first and add a ledge to knock against really. Not smooth bore lol.

      I dont know if you'd care but the light bars yellow colour.
      You could buy some "car headlight film" smoke or black tinted.
      That should break up the yellow dull it down. But still allow the light out.
      Its like clear film with millions of black dots. So when powerd the dots fill with light.
      Im not sure though how it would work but ide give it ago. The film is in all colours and works well for lots of things.

      Compared to the bone stock steering, the high steer knuckles are a big improvement, but there's no useful gain beyond what I did in my earlier steering upgrade video. The kit will turn farther than my modified stock steering, but both are limited by how far the CV axles can turn.

    the only thing i see here which might help in the long run (no really in the the steering angle ) is on the the left side is it possible to run the bolt and nut the other way so the nut is facing down. the way it is set up here looks like with any kind of flex the tire side wall is going to hit the nut and possibly tear up the tire after time and also cause a tire binding issue.

    • @BudgetRC_Channel
      @BudgetRC_Channel  Před 6 lety +1

      I did exactly that shortly after I filmed the video. The plastic link and bolt head are smooth enough not to cause problems if there is some tire rub.

    I just got mine today (3/14/19). I know this bid is a year old. I had all the steering pieces to upgrade it. But when I looked at the steering arm, it is different than what you had originally on yours. It is higher and the bar has a bow on it. So.....when did the Gen7 upgrade their steering arm? I haven't been able to find a vid with the new designed steering arm?

    • @BudgetRC_Channel
      @BudgetRC_Channel  Před 5 lety +1

      Yes, Redcat revised the Gen7 to come with a plastic version of their high steer knuckles. Because of this, you need to carefully set your steering dual rate on the controller because the high steer knuckles eliminated the mechanical stops that prevented the axles from binding. If you don't set the dual rate to limit the steering before the axles bind you'll break the chubs and/or the axles.

    The steering angle system has a maximum ( minimum) steering angle of +0.52359878 (-0.52359878 ) radiant or +30 (-30 ) degree. Anything more will cause wheel jitters and cause the pins in the joints to bind and wear out faster.? Especially in a cvd system ✌

    • @BudgetRC_Channel
      @BudgetRC_Channel  Před 6 lety +1

      Agreed. Just past 30 degrees is where the CV axles start to bind slightly. I snuck 33 degrees out of it without any visible notchy behavior, but past that it gets pretty bad. Guys who don't set their end points right are already tearing up c-hubs with these knuckles.

    • @palmbebiking
      @palmbebiking Před 6 lety

      Yea its seems no matter what truck I had steering binding has always been an issue. I have had the trx-4 scx10 ii and until you upgrade to some nice cvd's. Now I had more angle those trucks I mentioned are designed well but i see no reason you couldn't get these gen7's in there throwing it down with them (if) they do some type of upgrade with the steering besides the knuckles and axle shells.

    • @BudgetRC_Channel
      @BudgetRC_Channel  Před 6 lety

      From a steering perspective, all the Redcat needs is CV axles with more available angle, but you're still going to have interference with the shocks and lower links.

    • @palmbebiking
      @palmbebiking Před 6 lety +1

      Yea hopefully they make the parts or another company steps up to the plate. I did my first local come series last year and the redact appeals to me because of the cost and the possibilities. Had an scx10 and trx-4 both great rigs but i felt like my money didn't stretch out long enough. Rig tires and servo your looking at a chunk of change. Pay extra for the pro or get the sport. The plastic lockers kinda concern me but im pretty sure my scx10 deadbolt has the same deal with the lockers.

    Hey there. Love your videos. I have the Everast Gen7 Pro and have been making changes to my truck based on your vids. In looking at what you did here I have a couple suggestions that might help. With the aluminum knuckles, flip flop the screws so the nuts are on the bottom now. The round screw head will be less likely to hit the tire. Also I would try moving the steering arm mount point underneath the knuckle mount point and over the cross arm if you get me. Just my 2 cents. I haven't picked up the aluminum knuckles yet but it's on my list.

    • @BudgetRC_Channel
      @BudgetRC_Channel  Před 6 lety

      After I shot the video and drove the truck, I saw that the nut was rubbing the tire, so I flipped the screw for the added tire clearance. The arm is doing fine up high, and it keeps it from hanging on obstacles. What's your reasoning for dropping it down?

    • @TieFighter99
      @TieFighter99 Před 6 lety

      In looking at how the knuckles are engineered, the mounting points for the steering arms is now up high. It almost looks like the ball joints should be mounted below the aluminum arm. It would give more clearance by the tire. With the longer servo horn, it looks like it might work.

DO NOT GET ME WRONG I LOVE CUSTOM MASHING TRUCK'S BUT NOT WHEN THEY TRICK YOU INTO IT. IVE BEEN IN THIS RC GAME SINCE I WAS 16 AND NOW I'M 38 AND HAVE BEEN SPONCORED SINCE 04 BY 9 COMPANIES. ANYWAY I UPGRADE ITS LITERALLY MY NICKNAME FROM MY GRANDMA GAVE ME EVERYTHING I TOUCH IS MUST BE. MY JUST GOT MY FAVORITE 2 UPGRADES THUS FAR....LOL AND PERSONALIZING MY VEHICLES IS WHAT THIS HOBBY IS ABOUT. AS MUCH MONEY I PUT IN RC CARS, CRAWLER'S AND BOATS I COULD HAVE BOUGHT A WAR TORN COUNTRY AND REBUILT THAT NO LIE I PROBABLY OWN THE BEST ROCK CRAWLER EVER RIGHT IN FRONT ME. IT LITERALLY MAKES EVERY CRAWLER ON CZcams LOOK LIKE A NEW BRIGHT. IN MY OPINION AND MOST LIKELY IS. I TOOK THE BEST PARTS FROM EVERY ROCK CRAWLER SINCE THE AX10 SCORPIAN AND OF COURSE THE BEST OF EVERYTHING FROM EVERYONE. SO IF I DON'T LIKE THE SHOCKS THAT DAY I HAVE 14 OTHER PAIRS AND NOT EBAY SPECIALS IM TALKING RICH FROM RCN WILL ARGUABLY SAY THE PROLINES AND I WATCH MEDIC FROM RC ADVENTURES WOULD HAVE HIS BEST OPINION SO I END UP WITH $5,000 DOLLAR AXIALGEN7 PRO CUSTOM GMADE LOSI MST CFX-W WITH KING SHOCKS AND A XJ FRONT MOLDED INTO A 4RUNNER REAR PORTAL AXLE TRX4 AND NOW I HAVE MY WICKED MASH TRUCK. OH AND ALL THE OTHERS AS WELL SO IF I WANT TO GO TO AXIALFEST IT TAKES ME A YEAR TO BUILD A CRAWLER BECAUSE I LIVED IN TAHOE MY WHOLE LIFE AND LOVE RC AND CISCO GROVE IS MY OR TRUCKEE AREA IS MY SECOND HOME. ANYWAY I KINDA DRIFTED OFF INTO A PARTS LIST...LOL oh turning radius on the gen7 I think my point is if you pay 200.00 for a pretty awesome truck stop and wait to see who finds the problems and solutions and crys over 7 extra degrees of steering. Then go fix it like this guy while I'm enjoying the other 5 builds I have going on. I also own 4 real JEEPS and if you love them as much as me then you will end up with a 04 KJ WITH A JEEPIN BY AL'S 6" LIFTED AND EATON TRUETRACK LOCKED ON 37'S AND AND GO FOR REAL CRAWLING AGAINST SOME JACK ASS IN JK MALL CRAWLER COST 65 THOUSAND THEN CALLS MY LIBERTY NOT A REAL JEEP BUT 2 HOURS LATER AFTER I STOMP INTO THE ROCKY MTN'S I TOW HIM HOME CAUSE HE NEVER NEW THE FIRST RULE ABOUT CRAWLER'S. THAT HE WHO WAITS FOR THE RIGHT JEEP FOR 2 YEARS AND PLANS THE BUILD AND THE SECOND YOU GET IT LOCKERS, LOCKERS FIRST NOT A 10,000 DOLLAR LIFT AND WARN WINCH PRETYY BUMPER . GET A LIBERTY KJ PAY 4200 AND LOCKERS THEN EXTRA 17,000 DOLLAR'S IN GO STOMP EVERY XJ AND JK THAT CALLS YOU OUT BUT DIDN'T LOCK UP. OH BUT NOW I THINK MY LIBERTY IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE BADDEST JEEP'S IN UT WERE I CURRENTLY LIVE IN LOGAN CANYAN UT. I MARRIED MY BEST FRIEND GIRL AND BOUGHT 2 HOUSES ONE IN SACRAMENTO AND ONE IN LOGAN UTAH GETTING READY TO BUILD THE 1/8TH SCALE PRO TRACK AND INDOOR CLAY TRACK FOR WINTERS. I WILL OWN THE BEST TRACKS WITHIN 1,005 MILES. IM TAKING MY HOBBY TO ANOTHER LEVEL. AND OF COURSE A INDOOR COMP CRAWL. LOGAN HAS THE RECORD FOR THE COLDEST WINTER EVER AND NOTHING TO DO DURING WINTER BUT COME TO MY TRACK'S. I
    AND PLAY I LOVE RC SO MUCH BUT ALSO LOVE MONEY AND I GOT TO GET SOME BACK FROM MY FIRST NITRO HOBBY TO OWNING AROUND $65,000 IN RC ADDICTION. THAT'S NOT WHAT IVE SPENT THAT CURANTLY HAVE. I FOUND 3 MAMBA X ESC SYSTEMS WITH ALL SLATE MOTOR'S NEVER OPENED TWO DAYS AGO. NOW THAT'S AN RC ADDICT. WOOOW! IF YOU MAKE IT HERE YOU CAN GET INTO MY TRACK FOR FREE WHERE I WILL HOLD THE NEXT REEDY NATIONAL...PEACE OUT AND STOP HATING OTHER BRANDS MASH UM AND ENJOY YOUR BIG BOY TOY.
