  • Follow the full assembly procedure for the Redcat RER10669 Portal Axle kit for the Gen7 trucks. In this first of 3 videos, I take you through the assembly of the front and rear axles. Installation into the truck will be shown in video 2, and Video 3 will detail some tweaks done to make it work better.
This is intended to supplement the Redcat assembly instructions found here:
    www.redcatracing.com/manuals/P...
The Redcat portal axles can be found here:
    www.redcatracing.com/RER10669
Please excuse the poor editing of this video. My computer is on its way out and I experienced multiple crashes while putting this together, so I wasn't able to edit it to my satisfaction.

Awesome video, you should be working for Redcat doing install videos. You're right to the point and cover everything perfectly.
Rumor has it they're coming out with a HD version , can't wait for them to drop.
Keep up the great work man!

Redcat has already updated a number of the parts on their portals, and the new trucks are shipping with those revised parts.

OK! The Grease on the End Link Studs, going into the aluminum Rods..... BRILLIANT! I've actually never heard or seen that one before. Excellent point on the corrosion too. I'm going to HAVE to remember that one. Thanks!

The $1000 price was a placeholder so the early testers could order using the existing system.

Hey good to see ur back around, I was just talking to someone about these portals, friend told me the site said $1k for them n I know that’s gotta be a typo

    • @BudgetRC_Channel
      @BudgetRC_Channel  Před 6 lety +1

The $1k was just so that people didn't snatch them from the early buy-in guys. We got a $930 discount code. Regular price will be $100.

That was to allow the people who were picked to Demo Purchase the model get it.. They were also given a coupon code that brought the price down to "normal"

I REALLY wish I had the money to pre-order these... 😱😭
It appears that these would fit a couple of other Rigs besides Redcat (HG P402, SCX10 one, Gmade Komodo, and even possibly some others).
As far as Grease, I don't submerge mine, but they do occasionally get wet. I've used Marine Grease for about 20 years, with great results. It's only a little more than Automotive Bearing Grease but, if it gets wet, it *won't* turn into brown sludge, and adheres to gears a little better.
I've been in the Hobby since 1985, and except for the first 2 or 3 years, I haven't used the '$5.00 for a bottle cap worth' Grease, and never had issues.
..... I guess you've either got to be old school, or just in the Hobby for a long time, to understand that most of the extremely Expensive RC lubricants are just Snake Oil - unless you're a serious Competitor, and every half second counts.
Thanks for this! I'm going to use it to guide me through the assembly, and put it on my Channel, to maybe help others.

Also, just an Old Fart trick...
I don't *pack* Grease all over the inside either - it can drastically reduce Runtimes! I DO pack Grease between the inner and outer Pinion Bearings, also with waterproof Marine Grease. I will also pack a little Grease right behind the outer Axle Bearings, right where the Bearings snap in. Those two things do a great job of keeping water out of the Axle Housings... Unless someone is the type to drive through raging Rivers!!
      They're on their own.

Sorry, but WAIT..... There is NO Bearing, Bushing or even Seal - where the Axle Shafts exit the main Axle Housing??? 😱
I wonder what keeps Water or even dust out....! I've got to look into that.

I'm not aware of any solid axle designs that are water tight.

When you put your portals in, did you notice any grinding noises when you open up the throttle? I can't say for sure if it sounded like that before but I don't think it did. I checked the gear mesh on the spur/pinion and tried it tighter and looser and sounds the same with both tolerances. Just trying for the life of me to figure out why it's so noisy. There is a tiny bit of a wobble on the output shaft from the trans. I took the slipper assembly apart and everything looks just like how it was on Redcats instructional video. Pretty cut dry on that part of the install. Any ideas?
I do have the V2 portals on mine.
Thanks again, luv the channel 👍👊

I don't really remember if it was this or a different truck, but if I over-tightened the diff cover it would get noisy. Try backing off a little bit on the diff cover screws and see if it helps.
