2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Test Drive Review: The People's Luxury

- For years, the #Volkswagen #Jetta #GLI could not live up to the reputation of the Golf GTI. But for the seventh-generation, VW finally improved the GLI to put it on par with its hatchback sibling. We tested a 2020 GLI Autobahn with the manual to see if it's still worth considering in the sporty compact sedan segment.

I like the red lip on the rims. It was a selling point for me. Yes, I own a 35th Anniversary Edition.
Bought a 19 GLI autobahn and I love it. There are a few areas on the interior where VW went pretty cheap (mostly on the rear doors) but outside of that it’s a great car for the price. The Beats sound system is not the greatest but I think that has more to to with a lack of insulation and maybe not the speakers. Easily fixable. No one is buying sedans in the US so dealers are practically giving these away. Highly recommend.
I’ve had my 2019 manual 35th edition for over a year now and am very happy with it. Fun to drive, comfortable and great on gas. Also, quite fortunate that the Canadian version 35th came fully loaded with all the autobahn options as well as in car navigation which mirrors to the virtual cockpit. It is a lot of car for the money.
It's a great car!
I have the 2019 Autobahn with the DSG and I love it! Have no complaints even after 11k miles
I bought my used a 2020 with 11,000+ miles!
Just picked up my 2021 - same color (pure grey) - 6-spd manual! Love it!
The factory VW / Audi DSG dual clutch trans is the envy of the competition- It's an "automated manual" ( NO torque convertor) that will change your mind about "automatics" and is the better transmission for CC, GLI, GTI, GOLF R, period. 12+ years proven performance with VW / Audi DSG & Porsche PDK trans.
Porsche pdk is mostly zf incorporated transmission performance track not dual clutch performance track.
Have one coming to me in a week or two and couldn't be more excited!
Congratulations!
Just got one yesterday!!! I love it!!!😍😎
Armand Blankenship I got mine about a week ago! Leftover (new) 2019 in white.
I totally agree w/you on the wheel designs of the last 5-7 years. Barf!!!
What part of Florida you filming in? Looks like the Tampa metro area in all those office parks.
Background music while reviewing a car?
1:05 what is the track used in the beginning of the video? That's some chill-lounge-esque stuff I'd jam to.
This is the exact configuration I'm looking for but can't find it anywhere in my side of the country.
I just called a dealer to find the exact one I want or place a factory order.
Nice review! I own a 2020 and I can view my entire navigation on my digital cockpit. I think you made a mistake. You might want to edit your video with some text when you say you can only have a compass displayed on your cockpit.
You have a GLI? It does not have factory navigation.
@@carbuzzcom how come mine does....I have a 2020 black gli Autobahn from Canada..mine has GPS and I can view it on my digital cockpit full screen mode.
@@khoury1980 Must be different in Canada vs the US
Canada as a better version of the Gli not sure why but VW decided to punish America. We got the watered down version.
canada is different. i just got a 2020 gli autobahn manual, no nav in cockpit
You can have Nav on the virtual cockpit though...
I like the MK7 GLI, but gone are the days you could count on VW interiors being a cut above the nearest competition. The Mazda 3, Honda Civic and in some ways even the Nissan Sentra and Toyota Corolla outclass the Jetta interior, and imo even the MK8 Golf. Still a compelling car overall, but I'd much rather have a Civic SI or my current daily driver..2021 Mazda 3 Turbo hatch in a color very close to this GLI.
I want to trade in my 2017 jetta for this autobahn but sadly there isn't any available at the dealers near me 😑
Darn. Maybe look at the Civic Si as well. It's a great car too.
@@carbuzzcom thanks for the recommendation but I left those for vw I can't go back lol
@@residentevil54460 The GLI is a more upscale car with more power. But the Si is a little more fun to drive.
@@carbuzzcom for some of us, asian cars are NEVER an option.
@@SonOfTheDawn515 Why?
This car is sexy

Can you turn off the fake engine noise? Sounds gimmicky
Nice, DSG all day ,to much traffic in Charleston S,C
Agreed - VW and Audi wheel design has become terrible.
Please revert to 5-, 6-, and 7- spoke designs.
Mercedes and Porsche continue with these designs and they are timeless and elegant.
I hate directional wheels. The MK4 had the simpler and better looking wheels on the standard Jetta and Passat. MK5 was just a horrible style all around and MK6 had a couple decent options. Almost forces you to go aftermarket and I prefer my vehicles as stock as can be.
I am thinking about getting this car, but I am not convinced the Autobanh one is worth the extra $4k.
If you don't need leather or heated and ventilated seats, or if you think you won't use the virtual cockpit, get the S. The DCC and larger touchscreen are nice though. You aren't losing too much with the S.
@@Evilj82 No, only the Autobahn gets the adaptive suspension.
CarBuzz lol
Just DoIt I ended up buying a preowned 2016 GLI actually .
The ventilated seats were a big selling point for me given where I live. Can’t beat it in the summertime. I also liked the digital cockpit better than what came on the 35th Anniversary Edition (US version). Plus, I wasn’t a big fan of the wheels on the 35th. They look more aggressive maybe but they also looked cheaper to me and I felt like they would get dated. The downside was that I didn’t get the adaptive suspension and honestly I think the cloth seats are more comfortable. Not that the leather ones aren’t.
Also, unless something has really changed in the last 11 months dealerships are simply not selling 4 door sedans. They will practically give you these cars if you don’t go into the deal like a kid in a candy store. The sticker on my autobahn was $32k US. I paid 25 tax included. Probably could’ve gotten the 35th for close to 21k US. The VW car salesperson flat out told me they weren’t selling the GLI or GTIs. Just the SUVs and the 1.4 Jetta on occasion. Just my experience with it. I’m sure it’s different in other parts of the world.
Nice looking car but not loving the rims. I couldn't look at them everyday.
Very nice review except for one minor niggle. When you're testing the handing and acceleration toward the end of the review, I have zero interest in looking at your face speaking to me. We can hear your voice, and we're interested in the driving experience, not your face. You obviously have multiple cameras in the interior...so for future reviews, please make it about the car and driving experience and use the camera that shows the outside view as you provide an audio account for descriptive purposes. Again, great review, but more car and less of you. 😉
Looks like an Audi
