I grew up a Jazz fan in the 90's. The Sonics were a heated rival. But I always respected Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton nonetheless. I couldn't help but enjoy watching them play. They played with so much passion and intensity. It was fun to watch. Kemp was a crazy athlete.
Great video as usual, Andy. I'm hesitant to put him in the top 25-30 power forwards of all time when you really look at the history of the game. He definitely had top 10 all time power forward talent. For sure. He's probably more like top 40-50 all time.
Shawn Kemp is 5th on my list
@Paul Joseph Robinson yes sir
hard to put him in top 10, but top 15 for sure.
i met Kemp in a downtown supreme store in Chicago. Guy is massive. He also seemed really humble that he was recognized by everyone in the store. (walked in because his lady wanted to look around) He was more then happy to take pictures and it took every bit of me to not ask about the lister blister. this was like feb of this year.
6'10 if I remember....
@@iad77 And his favorite sport growing up was football.
@@arsonhakobyan I didn't know that 😁
@@iad77 Now you do.
@@arsonhakobyan 🤡😒
The fact that Kemp's best statistical year actually came after the weight gain and alcoholism just goes to show that had he not of done all that stupid stuff, he really could've been a top-10 power forward ever.
@Harry Engel sounds like you nailed it on the spot
Nah bro you selling him short, he could of been a top 5 PF even better than Barkley/Malone if he really wanted too too bad he fell off
Yeah...dude still averaged over 20 a night on 48% shooting from the field, despite being *FAT* that year.
He is
Woulda coulda shoulda is barber shop talk kemp is a legend and receives his flowers from people who respect the game all that other stuff is spilled milk
Shawn Kemp in his prime was unbelievable, one of the greatest pure athletes and a real POWER forward. 💪💪
Yeah one of the best centers
he's atleast in top 15 in big man💪💪
Agreed he was outstanding!!👍👍👍👍
@Rick Davis you just mad that you weigh 600 pounds and can’t walk since you’re so obese
He like a young Amar'e or Blake Griffin
You forgot the most memorable thing about him: even by the lofty standards of the 90s, the man was a master of stylish slam dunks.
i dont know how he has 400k followers if this is his type of analysis of players. sounds like a nerd reading someones notes.
6 10 power and the style to go with it, havnt seen anyone that size able to blend it together like he did since. Not even close
@@marked4death076 Zion?
@@zstillo3500 absolutely not
He might be the best Dunker who have participated in a Dunk Contest to have never won it.
Kemp got me started watching NBA. I was a fan of him and the team. All I want to say is BRING BACK SONICS!
I miss the SuperSonics myself
Not a supersonic fan but I really agree with this.
I was so pissed watching the sonics lose to the bulls in the finals.... Mind you I was broken before that watching them lose to the Nuggets with mutumbo in 94.....
I’m an okc fan after they moved and they would become my tied fav team with the current okc team. These teams technically share same history but I don’t see it that way. Bring back the sonics is something I would be so happy with
Bring back the Sonics
Being a Portland fan, I certainly remember kemp's height more than any thing else. The first thing to come to mind is that dunk, you know exactly the one I mean.
Which dunk??

@@nomiiakeroxiaza2192 Get a life you bum. You really copied the guys comment below this comment.
@@laaaazzzii Sure you did. There's another person in the comment thread with the exact same story. Met him in Chicago blah blah. Bullshit!
This mans only goal was to posterize everyone .
Yessssss one word that describes him in his prime, ferocity!
That doesn’t sum up all of his talent though
If thats the case, then Kemp had a very successful career. haha
And he did there’s film of him dunking on Mutumbo
Watch the dream team 2 highlights where he dunks on the world 🤣
How good was Tom Chambers a prolific scorer in his prime in the 80s and early 90s.
Phoenix baby 🔥
Tom chambers was a great scorer
He should have been in the hall of Famer
I literally logged in to ask exactly for the same thing! Interesting player, would make for a good video
best scorer in nba history
Kemp and the glove Gary Payton were one of the most deadly pick and roll combinations ever. You did not want to be on a shawn kemp poster. He was brutal.
OG Lob City
He was one of my favorite players on the Supersonics in the 90s, Its sad how his career ended.
Andy, even though a lot of Basketball channels are coming up; yours is still my favorite :) love the calm narration, very soft and relaxing which is what I want out of my bball content.
Yeah he's really engaging
I grew up watching him. Until I saw Vince Carter later in the 90's, Kemp always stood out as the most aggressive dunker I'd ever seen.
I would put Nique in there too but agree....he was nasty
A player on the decline that put up 19 and 10. Damn. Anyway come up here to Seattle and buy some Shawn Kemp weed. He just opened a shop.
Certainly not called Tegridy Weed.. Maybe Pidity Weed would be much more accurate 😎🚬
SK40 became my favorite NBA player when MJ retired for the first time. I actually rooted for the Sonics against the Bulls during their c’ship. I sincerely believe that he deserves to be in the HOF, as I see a lot of players in there with less accomplishments.
He was one of my favorites to watch growing up. One of the best in-game dunkers ever.
People also forget how deadly his mid-range jumper was he just wasn't a dunker he could knock down from 16,15 ft jump also
It's really sad to see how he was in the 2010s.. Thank God he's recovering now
He was looking and doing really well when I met him yesterday.
By the way, his story sounds like a classic case of serious depression.
Incredible finisher, super defender, good shooter from mid range and brought a ton of energy.. He was the best player in those Sonics teams
You're nuts Bro!! The Glove was HANDS DOWN The Best player on that team the second that his name was called in the draft !!
Its payton , Kemp is really good player but the GP calls the shot and guard the teams best player
That dunk on Alton Lister, WOW!
Anybody can posterized Alton Lister.

One of my favorite players of all time, hope he makes hall of fame some day.
How has he not already?
imagine if the Kemp/Pippen trade happened, then Mike comes out of Retirement and Faces Gary Payton and Scottie Pippen in the 1996 finals! That would have been awesome
These videos are always so informative, always learn so much from them, cheers from Canada!
Kemp was my favorite player back in the day, so much fun to watch
I remember seeing him in Orlando when I was in high school and it hurt my heart seeing him like that. I thought he had retired. Ill say one thing though. He NEVER blamed anyone but himself.
Wherever Shawn is now i wish him the best and hope he is doing well in life.I always loved watching the Sonics growing up in the 90s very good memories to me.
He owns Shawn kemps cannabis in Seattle. Look it up
@@coreykleinman7902 cannabis is great after a night drinking. Fitting. I mean that in the highest regard. Shame I'll never visit Seattle over here on the other side of the world.
Im an aussie basketball fan and in australia back in the 90s it was hard to get any nba games on tv.
But 1 of the channels showed the sonics bulls finals games and i was blown away with the reign mans aggression and power on his dunks. He was unstoppable around the rim.
I been waiting for this
He's my favorite nba Player. Lot of passion and effort. He got me watching the nba ever since
Thanks for making this video
My all-time favorite player & should be in the HOF. He has the resume for it, just missing a ring. Top4 power forward of the 90s hands down.
Can you do a video about a forgotten franchise player, Shareef Abdur Rahim?
Didn't He play for Teams like Grizzlies?
And the Atlanta Hawks.
@@simonhughes4934
I remember him on the Hawks, early 2000s.
His younger brother was my classmate, in 9th grade (Wheeler High School, Marietta, GA).
Buddy came to school with new kicks, literally, EVERYDAY.
Got crazy attention, too.
I really do be waiting on you to upload videos lol
Loved those old sonics jersey

Will always Love Kemp an 90s basketball.
Loved The Reign Man. NBA Superstars Vol. 3. Great video, Andy. Thanks.
Shawn Kemp was great back in the 90s The 90s in my opinion was the best era of the NBA. The 2000s was great too but I give the edge to the 90s
the 90's were the best era in EVERYTHING, sports in every genre, rap with real gangsta shit lyrics, movies without fake CGI....Baywatch with Pamela Anderson! i rest my case.
I was named after Shawn Kemp and I knew some about him, but this gave me a ton more info on him. Thank you for the great video Andy!!!
I still say at his peak he was the best in game dunker of all time. His highlight reel still gives me goosebumps.
One of my favorite players of the 90's his decline broked my heart and I'm wish him all the best and never forget his power and grace in his Seatlle years.
I always remember him as a Supersonic - I hope he finds happiness and gets away from the bad things
My boys Andy Hoops AND Johnny Arnett uploading on this beautiful Saturday? It’s a good day
He was one of my favorite players; especially his sneakers. Great memories as a kid
loving this old footage.
Great video. Very explanatory. Kemp was one of the players that made me enjoy 90's NBA. Just should have been better longer.
Reign Man 🔥
Always a fan of Shawn Kemp...he was ahead of his time!!
Can do a video about how good was James worthy, I think a lot of people forget about him he was a fmvp in 88
Yep, Worthy is a little bit forgotten
@@stefanocanicchio7278 I see a lot saying Kareem and magic were a duo but i think they were a trio with James worthy

We Lakers fans always remember Big Game James!
Since LA has another legendary small forward which is Elgin Baylor, Worthy gets overshadowed by Elgin when people discuss who is the best Lakers SF
He was one of my favorite player in my childhood. His games were fun to watch
I love your vids
How good was bob mcadoo former MVP and game changing center
If he didnt suffered all his issues he was a lock at the HOF
He’s gonna make it anyway
@@nikonocente7430 nah... Too many inconsistencies.. Not enough to justify why he deserves to be there..
My favorite guy for a long time, do y’all remember nba inside stuff on Saturday morning, highlights every week
Love your videos bro I think an Al Jefferson video would be great
One minute into the video I got goose bumps and chills all over my body. I'm 41 and was so lucky and fortunate to live football basketball and wrestling in the late 80s and 90s no cell phone needed back then . Just some balls . We actually played outside. Shit we played tackle football with the neighboring neighborhoods. Good old days now gone for. This new generation would not make it 1 day in my time . I had a great childhood that's to the NBA of the 90s.
Can u do more of those “how good was in their career” videos ? I miss those
Anyone reading this I hope you have a great day today
Ever since he left the Cavs he just fell off at like 28
@KD Gaming No
@KD Gaming I am
A very interesting video , Ahh Shawn Kemp .. what a career he’s had in Seattle but yeah his career went downhill after that
Andy your my favorite CZcamsr. Make a video about me when I make the NBA
“Why did he fall out of the league?” Lmao
andy hoops the best nba content youtube channel
I grew up with the Magic so I loved seeing him on the team despite it being his last stop. Magic fans all loved him and it seemed like he was a great teammate, he had a few moments too where he showed traces of the reign man!
The magic have historically rostered a number of old school legends, Dominique and Ewing come to mind. It was cool to see as a fans of those guys.
When Andy mention that MJ was agree with Kemp comparison with him, i thought he would take that personally and going to show that Kemp aren't 😅
Sad story. I loved watching the Sonics back in the day when I first got into basketball.
Kemp would be so perfect in Today's NBA
interesting. he was one of my favorite players growing up. i never knew what happened to him later in his career. great documentary
About remembering Shawn Kemp:
When i hear his name, i think of NBA Jam coming to life in the NBA. One of the most spectacular dunkers i've ever seen and an essential piece of 90's NBA nostalgia.
I don't know why it was so hard to find the video like this glad I finally found it after it was recommended to me I literally searched this topic up and found nothing couple days ago 🙄
Crazy I’ve been watching Andy Hoops for a minute now n just realized I wasn’t subscribed lol!
He did enough in sonics, more than enough. He is one of the best players ever.Hes dunks are the most beautiful ever.Huge talent,epic.Respect40
When I was in high school a friend of mine moved in from Seattle. He was a huge sonics fan and we watched the games at his house. This was when the Sonics were starting to get good. Watching Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton made me really appreciate and get into the NBA because growing up in Virginia we either got to see the Bullets lose to everyone else. It’s a shame is personal demons derail his career. At the end of the day Shawn Kemp was really fun to watch and it a lot for the NBA’s popularity.
He's one of my fave players but really just because that jcole bar on motiv8 with his name was fire
The narrator of this video is a robot. Just like those calls you get on your cell phone. Your mortgage, insurance, or social security. He deserves more than a robot to define him. I lived during his playing time and this dude was unstoppable.
Saying his talent was on the downswing when he got traded to Cleveland is misleading. He was an all-star there. Would have been more correct to say "he was still a great player, albeit with a lot of weight gain, but after X amount of years in Cleveland, his career went down dramatically." Come on bro!
Yeah Andy is good but I'm surprised he didn't mention him going to a all star game there
He only made the All-Star game in Cleveland, 'cause of the fan vote. Anyone who actually watched him that season knew he didn't deserve the All Star nod, although I'll say that he did put up a good (and effective) fight in the first round of the playoffs.
The carrer might be ended, but he survive until now. He had own business. From the top, fall, and rise. Life give him a lot of experience.
Kemp really kept Seattle in the conversation in the 90’s to take the west. He and Payton were a powerful duo. And I always knew when he played my Jazz team, he would give us something exciting to watch during the game. 🏀 💯 💣
watched kemp during '96 finals and i was amazed by his dunks, since then he bacame my fav player in early NBA Live playstation series
I remembered when I was a kid, I played NBA Jam a lot and would always pick Sonics all the time because of Kemp and kept breaking backboard. What a memory.
2 of my favourite game commentators sayings because they would repeat it numerous times:
#1 "Stockton..to Malone!"
#2 "tHe ReIEIIIIIIggN MAN!
Shawn Kemp: Flamed out quickly, with a tragic end.
Also Shawn Kemp: Played 14 seasons in the NBA at a very high level and is highly regarded by his peers.
Makes sense.
Me and my brother absolutely loved the guy. Creative dunker and fearless leader.
Big fan here!! Watching from 👀🇵🇭👌
Even though I’ve always known that was kemp in that magic picture he just reminds me of some guy in that picture
Shawn Kemp was a force in his prime and his dunk taunt is one of my favorite dunks of all time. PS I make NBA videos too😬
Shawn Kemp is one of my favorite power forwards of all time🔥🔥💧
Birds fly. Fish swim. Andy says “How’s going”.
Shawn Kemp is one of my favorite players, it's sad to see what happened to him in his later years.
At his peak Kemp was honestly the best player on his team
Shawn Kemp was the shoulders that Kevin Garnett stood upon in some ways.
If Gary Payton was guarding MJ for the whole of the '96 finals, there is a good chance the Supersonics would have won
That is facts
Yeah, Jordan said in the last dance that he didn’t have any problems with payton, but the numbers and efficiency say otherwise lmao
George made a gamble not to risk Payton (he was injured), but a great chance was lost, injury is part of the game but, yeah...
The Bulls might have still won the series, but it might go to game7

After Jordan, Kemp was my favourite player of the early to mid 90s. So fun to watch. Life happens, some people drink too much, hopefully he's a happy and content man wherever he is now.
Those who watches nba those years will always remember him for what he did, and not his downfall. He was an absolute dominant power fw freak. 6 times All star... And all that playing against the malones, barkleys, etc.
Secret Base should also make an episode about him on Untitled series.
