Great video, it’s nice that you didn’t start by calling it a beginners bike. Some of us can remember when a 500 was a big bike. I got a CL a couple of weeks ago and would recommend giving one a go.
"Some of us can remember when a 500 was a big bike". I said the exact same thing to my son the other day!

Thank you for the excellent video and information. "You meet the nicest people on a Honda".
Love this bike, takes me back to my youth
That dude in the red hugging middle of the road is looking for trouble. Has he ever heard of keeping distance from traffic may keep you alive? Or at least have more of a chance of a positive reaction time?
Anyway love the way you (Simon) presents this review happy go lucky style of reporting obviously enjoying yourself. Good to see!
Thanks 👍
Great review 😊👍
I'm surprised there was no mention of the Svartpilen 401 as a competitor. Pricing and horsepower numbers are more similar than the Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Suzuki bikes mentioned. Case in point: I got tired of waiting for the CL500 to be announced for the USA and bought a Svartpilen instead. Other bikes I was considering were the 411cc Enfields. Anyway, great review on what looks to be a great bike.
Himalayan 450cc is going be launched imminently in India
How’s the Svart for occasional gravel/washboard roads? I’m on my second Duke, but recently moved to an area where every other ride winds up running out of pavement, and have been thinking about either the 401 or 701 (of which there are still a few around).
@@dbwindhorst1 It's great. I had it out last weekend for a 250-mile day of gravel, washboards, mud, etc. It did fine. My butt was sore at the end of the day, but the bike didn't mind. Granted, I've never owned a proper dirt bike, so I don't know what I'm missing. But if your goal is "occasional" gravel roads, the 401 works just fine.
@@TheWhoisthisjohn Thanks kindly for taking time to reply. It's helpful to get feedback directly from an owner.
The scl was released 2 weeks ago in the us. If you look hard enough you’ll find one. Got mine in last week.
great video, love this bike but why such a small dial which you can't read in bright sunshine
Great Vid Simon.
I’ve been working my way up the ccs and think this would be a good small road city bike to get my feet with at 500. Saw it showcased at the mall in remote a Thailand and I thought it looked beautiful.
All Honda has to do is use the cb750s crank in the 500 and 250 twin for that 270⁰ sound. Give the CL usd forks mono shock rear both long travel from the cbx with a fixed headlight like a Husqvarna Norden 901 only with the head light covered with a tiny cowl to only cover the head light.
Cool bike. It would be nice to see what a pannier mounted on the right side looks like
Have to agree with its main rival being the CMX - I was looking to downsize to the CMX, but they had the CL available for demo, I ordered the green one, did not get on with the Rebel's riding position (2 hr test ride is not the best way to judge, I have never owned a cruiser) My retirement present for some country lane exploration :)
Hi I’ve done very similar,as I’m getting on a bit and don’t need big speeds anymore I got the rebel in 2021 but now have a green CL. It’s much more comfortable and fits me perfectly. I think you’ll love it.
Similar circumstances to you two, and was also considering the Rebel 500. Now I think I will have to ask for a test ride on the CL 500 as well. Hmmm.....
@@dragoclarke9497 Morning Drago, there certainly is a big difference between the Rebel and the CL and I’m sure one will suit you. Let me know how you get on buddy.
Excellent video as always. Thank you.
Greetings from the NJ shore USA.
I might just trade in my Rebel 1100cc DCT for it. 😂
It would be good commuter bike ,,
Butty of mine has the earlier bike 2019 looks bit more off roader, we very often go through Wales all over 200+ miles in a day no problem
Looking at one of these for my Americas trip, as CB500 bits fit,and there's less to break...ABS would needs junked,1 big stone,no brakes, the rest is there apart from a big tank...feet down for my short legs!
Decent looking, personally I've never liked the angle on the tank. Looks like it's trying too hard to want to be a chopper, almost like a mini Fury. Would look much better if they covered the framework under the tank. Kudos to Honda for sticking with it even though it really doesn't work.
The tank angle gives you the feeling of being in the bike, as opposed to some that makes you feel on the bike. I liked it best when looking for a first bike.
Completely agree. I dislike the angle on the Rebel, which this follows. A scrambler should have a level looking tank.
I started thinking about getting another Bonneville or Interceptor, then got really excited looking at the RE Shotgun or maybe a CB1100, but I am getting seriously interested in this little scamp.
Will you be doing a comparison of all five bikes.
good review
Which jacket are you wearing?
I've ridden the CMX 500 Rebel and found the pegs a bit too far forward for me. The CL500 shares the same frame as the CMX you say. Are the pegs, gear shifter & front brake sited the same?
Honda could have designed the fuel tank not to look like the rebel 's, and cover the front of the frame, has got potential for customising.
Extra tooth on rear sprocket means lower gearing, not higher, so it's not been geared up.
true dat !
Pilion seating/footpeg position looks a bit spicy, especially with the exhaust
Personally I welcome most safety ideas being rolled out, especially stuff like the hazards on hard breaking. It makes riders more visible when situations are sketchy.
If you're activating it all the time you're leaving braking too late and you aren't riding smoothly. Chances are you need all the safety features you can get.
Also if a rider is distracted by their own lights I suggest they might want a different hobby - we don't need road users that are so easily distracted and bamboozled.
They didn't come on during 'normal' riding on this test so I find the comment odd. And surely if this is a big issue, as it's just software, Honda can lfash updates at a service. They sell a lot of bikes worldwide, they will know if it's an issue.
Cool video, except the you got rhe mileage wrong.
Me and my friend have been riding the Cl500, and the reserve light does not come on until 185 miles. We have been getting 200 miles on this bike. The dash shoes 75.5 miles per gallon here in the US.
Greetings from the NJ shore.
Would it be a bit of a stretch to do a comparison with the new Hunter 350? (I know this is about 2k more, but wondering if the gap is justifiable) ...BTW, great review, as usual!
Also, any wild guess when it may cross the pond to the U.S.?
Should be out now in USA although it is called the SCL500 - seen a few Test videos from over the pond.
I do like this bike if I get one I’ll be changing the exhaust
Maybe the Fantic Caballero... that would strike me as a proper rival.
Fork,brakes,engine, suspension from the 90's ,price 2023😁
Biggest competitor might be the range of Bennelli 500 models.
Scooter overtakes the entire lot on the inside. Wild.
Scooters and white vans are the fastest things out there.
Do you think the CL500 would be a good Bike to Cope with Uk Potholed Roads?
Until mine arrives at the dealer, can only give you my view from a 2hr test ride, my dealer is on a 70mph dual carriage way with no way of turning round for about 20 miles, so I ended up on some very narrow pothole, gravel and moss riddled country lanes after working out I could do a big loop back to the main road, it did very well, I later left the dealer on my MT03 doing nearly the same route, it was not as settled, the 19" on the CL soaks up much more. Even so I still tried to avoid some of the larger potholes some a big enough to lose an entire bike in...
Bit of a shame we had one brand new, 24 miles in and a CEL comes on. Currently in for investigation
Cool❤❤
If squint you can see a Vstrom650 rear end. I don't see a scrambler at all.
The direct rival of this bike is the scrambler 400 from ducati.
What you doing in that bush ¬_¬
pretty unexciting
But for pocket change you really can't beat it. All the things of why motorcycles used to be fun imo..
Exhaust terrible more bike colours needed
Nice 🎉 Review !!! Give the Bike a Separate Old-School Speedo and Tach !
Change that UGLY Pipe and those Pathetic Wheels while you are at it !
It’s got clocks? Could have fooled me. Why would you buy this instead of the 500F? It’s hardly stylish. Fugly parts bin special springs to mind, especially the small angled tank with the frame underneath up to the headstock.
Standard Honda plain vanilla....
And sometimes that's a good thing 👍
That exhaust is awful. Completely let’s the bike down
I’d have to agree, there must be some aftermarket options soon.
Typos letz me downz…
I disagree, its really cool in actual.
@@junalison6452 the exhaust is just too chunky.
@@Steve-motorcycles Arrow have just answered the call, looks good :)
Totally pointless but I could see this being a fun bike to customise, make it look a little more scrambler like
Horrible shocks .
Typical Honda, great engine but bland!
One of the ugliest bikes honda has ever made imo. But I'm sure it rides great.
The CL is way over priced
