    The Japanese Ghost in the Shell is also very culturally deep with Shintoism and Damashii, spirits. Japanese believe when you create something or anything it has its own unique soul whether a needle, a rice ball, a doll, a kimono or a tool. They also believe the longer the item exist it develops more of a soul, character, and personality. Depending on how its treated it could become good or evil and if long lived begin to animate or move it self and even become a god of sorts. The idea of the Ghost in the Shell is that they used parts of Makoto, a person's mind, while at the same time creating a new body thus a new Damashii or spirit should reside inside, however Makoto receives constant flash backs to her other life, therefore there is a Ghost inside yet the body is new, however with a ghosh insides the new creation it is but a shell. So spiritually for the Japanese how do you make a new body when there is a Ghost inside that just makes the body now a shell and no new soul can take place inside? Does something new still emerge? Do they join together? Think this is a side many American viewers don't see or even know about.

    • @jorgepeterbarton
      @jorgepeterbarton Před 5 lety +31

      I think it translates to western philosophy pretty easily. An essentialist soul vs. mechanistic mind. Something is retained as the 'ghost' but many times the memories and 'personality' are erased, so what is retained,...or what is changed when a personality inhabits a new body... is the whole question...but maybe we miss a little of the reference and connection to this culture- particularly the music is related to folk songs, but then its not just japanese- that's bulgarian folk music! this anime film already mixed up parts, much like Blade Runner or Neuromancer is set in a melting pot of nationalities, i think GiTS was meant to be that too.

      I am not American, I tried giving anime a chance. I watched Death Note, I watched Another, I tried watching FMA: Brotherhood. First got repetitive very fast, second got a very shitty and anti-climactic ending, the last one was trying to raise very adult problems, while being childish as fuck. Other than movies done by Hayao Miyazaki, I am yet to meet anime that would make me feel as if it is art from start to finish, not just in some rare moments.

      @jeppemichael 1. It seems that you might not know what cultural appropriation is.
      2. We non whites care greatly about the appropriation of our cultures and
      we don't mind when people appreciate it but sadly many people prefer to be ignorant.
      Please watch Madonna's Nothing Really Matters music video and then Michael Jackson's Black or White music video and see if you can spot which one is cultural appropriation and which one is cultural appreciation.

I mean, all the verticality, mixing two timelines in one picture, car construction scene, the part where villain is explaining what will happen, but at the end of scene you realize it actually already happened, final scene where reaching finish line morphs into some space odyssey space travel transcendent shit, there's a lot to love.

    I'm glad somebody fucking likes this movie, I can almost never find legitimate criticism against this film because purists have this agenda against it because it's not a beat for beat shot of the original.
    I hope you all are happy getting garbage like Death Note being pushed out instead of something like this, amazing, underrated and overlooked film.

    • @Pssybart
      @Pssybart Před 3 lety +5

      I think many critics of this movie have a pretty much opposite view. This movie sometimes tries to remake certain scenes from the roiginal shot for shot, and many (myself included) felt that this is something that held the movie back from being a truly original entry in the series. It's a bit similiar to the criticism the new Lion King got. It's a nostalgia bomb (to a degree), but it doesn't have the same depth as the original because of that.

      @therealchickentender Před 2 lety +1

      @@awandererfromys1680 What specific themes do you feel were jettisoned and not present in the film. "Remade Robocop" is hyperbolic at best. Come on good sir.

    • @awandererfromys1680
      @awandererfromys1680 Před 2 lety +3

      @@therealchickentender Well, X is fatally wounded in a traumatic event, and officially declared dead. In secret, X is taken by Evil Corporation, has their memories wiped, and is rebuild into an experimental cyborg with superhuman combat capabilities. The public mission statement is "to protect the innocent" or something similar wholesome sounding, but in reality Evil Corporation wants to gain more power and control over society. And more money of course. Anyway, X slowly regains their memories and identity, figures out what is going on, and rebels against Evil Corporation. After a few obligatory action scenes against a formidable foe where X almost seems to fail, Evil CEO is killed and X triumphs.
      X can be either Murphy or Major Killian. Same story, different visuals.
      In the manga Kusanagi isn't "the first of her kind," she's an old cyborg. Although she's filled to the brim with state-of-the-art military cybernetics, she looks like a standard factory model. That's why she occasionally sees copies of herself on the street. It's hinted that she became a cyborg in a similar way as in the movie, but her memory was never wiped or manipulated. The Mira Killian alter ego is completely made up for the movie's plot.
      Kusanagi's personal conflict is her questioning her own humanity after spending decades in an artificial body deep-diving into neural nets and other people's "ghosts." Up to the point where she starts to believe that she's fully synthetic, with artificial memories, and without a ghost of her own. The copies aren't helping either.
      This is why she is also a raging, foul-mouthed alcoholic who illegally prostitutes _herself_ to other women. To feel something... real.
      Anime Kusanagi is more brooding and stoic, and far less promiscuous. But otherwise pretty much the same person.
      Ghost in the Shell is about the meaning of humanity and identity in a transhumanist world that's on the brink of technological singularity. And our main protagonist is quite a mess. So is the world she lives in. Is it even ready for what is happening?
      In the movie there are a few moments where Major questions _what_ she is, or is becoming, but as soon as she starts to remember _who_ she is, the what becomes mostly unimportant. Her story arc is regaining her identity and autonomy, not transcending the human species and what that would mean.
      Now I'm not a "purist," I love the movie for its visuals, and Scarlett made a good Major. And I can easily understand why they ditched the manga persona of Kusanagi. But as soon as I figured out what was going on, the movie just became very predictable. I mean, it really is... Robocop.

      The final fight scene against the spider tank made no sense at all in the new movie. Why did she fight it? In the original one she had a time limit, hence she chose to engage it in a david-vs-goliath battle and failed in the end, only to be saved by Batou.

      I felt it was better then the anime. In a lot of ways. The puppet master felt absolutely none existing in the anime. I honestly forgot he was the main objective. This movie did a better job recreating the character and I felt it made wise creative choices that fit the plot and gave it more resolve rather then a cliff hanger that lead to another film where major wasn't even in the second film. So I think it did a better job and gave closure to the story where even if it didn't do well it's a stand alone film and at the same time they could move forward with other plots from the show. So it's a great start. Alita battle angel was the next anime movie that hit a home run in following the story and giving a compelling visual and dialogue.

      Eastern Visions more has been altered, clearly most of her memories have gone... she's pretty much a blank slate conditioned to be a weapon for Hanka robotics to sell to the government. In curious, if we do get a sequel... if she does start to remember more if she no longer takes that liquid that was supposedly to keep the brain from rejecting the cyborg body. i'm guessing it will just be fragments.

      You're right it wasn't as deep and meaningful as the original, but I don't think the new one was suppose to be? the anime is wonderful, but it's quite heavy and complex for a wider audience and for people who aren't into japanese anime as the next person. So what they have done here is just simplified it, and mostly concentrated on the visuals. For such a ambitious movie, I think they did a great job. I don't even know if it would have translated as well if they completely copied it frame by frame, etc, I don't think the western world would have totally got it unless you're a hard core japanese anime fan. Having said that, it still wasn't liked by loads of people, and it was still classed as a flop, which is a shame.

    Let's see what Mamoru Oshii the director of the original Ghost in the Shell thinks....
    "Mamoru Oshii, has weighed in on the whitewashing controversy surrounding the remake, saying that there is no basis for the criticism leveled at the decision to cast Scarlett Johansson in the lead role rather than an Asian actor. Oshii said that because the main protagonist - Major Motoko Kusanagi - is a cyborg, the question of race and whitewashing is a moot point. “What issue could there possibly be with casting her?” Oshii said. “The major is a cyborg and her physical form is an entirely assumed one.”
    “The name ‘Motoko Kusanagi’ and her current body are not her original name and body, so there is no basis for saying that an Asian actress must portray her. Even if her original body (presuming such a thing existed) were a Japanese one, that would still apply.”
    “If that’s not allowed, then Darth Vader probably shouldn’t speak English, either. I believe having Scarlett play Motoko was the best possible casting for this movie. I can only sense a political motive from the people opposing it, and I believe artistic expression must be free from politics.”

      Do you know what an "endorsement" is? It's just like how James Cameron endorsed Terminator Salvation and Terminator Genesis. Not saying Oshii doesn't like the adaptation, but he could care less about endorsing it. By contract, no people could talk negative about the project they are involved in; nor would they to any productions, since it can cost their relationship with companies. They are taking a percentage off the gross income anyways. Have you ever heard of a "negative endorsement" prior to a film's release? Even Alan Moore endorsed Watchmen, but changed his mind after it's release since he doesn't have to defend it any longer.

    As I watched the original film first, then watched SAC, both seasons in fact, and Arise before watching this remake, I really appreciate how this adaptation took certain elements from everything so far. Not just direct recreations of certain scenes.
    For example, Kuze was the main antagonist in SAC: 2nd GiG. In the Nightclub scene, Major is dressed all in red leather, which is of course a reference to Arise. And Chief Aramaki only speaks Japanese, which is a call back to the original film in it’s original Japanese Dub.

      Why do you think that is? The reason there are "no Japanese action actresses that could act the part" is because Hollywood always replaces the roles of people of color in films with white people and/or just about refuses to cast people of color! If this role was given to a lesser known Japanese actress they would have had a chance to gain popularity and actually become successful. Scarlett Johansson is a very talented actress but part of the reason she was able to gain the success and fame that she has today because she had the opportunity to. If non-white actresses and actors were given that kind of opportunity there could have been a popular Japanese actress to play this part. @Richard Dodge @Chris Stuckmann

    I do prefer the original without a back story for the character to add mystery and emphasis on the relation between lack of memory and question of identity.
    Overall this adaptation is very entertaining and visually stunning although it is indeed a dumbed down version of the original. It answers more questions in the film while the original leaves more philosophical questions it raised unanswered. After all, this is a Hollywood blockbuster, so I guess that's understandable.

Liu even starred in roles that weren't meant for Asian people (Charlie's Angels, Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, Cypher. It is but I still hope it does well. I give it a lot of points for staying true to the look of the original because honestly that is a major aspect of manga of anime is the style. With the story they did dumb it down, but it wasn't as a dumb as I was dredding it to be. I hope this allows for more material of this type to be brought to wider audiences. I know a lot of anime fans like it being their own little thing, but the fact is, like comics, this is primed to explode into the mainstream western culture. There are too many genuinely great stories for it not to.

    i enjoyed this movie and thought i would deserve more love, but for me it wasn't brilliant as the anime. The main focused in this movie was the Major (Scarlett Jo) and her Identity. Who is she or was she. While the anime focused on the question what defines a human being, its more a philosophically abroach. And that is what makes the movie so special. Is it the body that makes a human being, his mind, or the fact that he is able to think and creates a concousness.
    Hollywoods Ghost in the Shell's theme is a often used one. The main protagonist doesn't know about her/his past and then discovers who she/he was and questions her/his current standing.

    I totally agree with Mr Stuckmann on this movie. It is excellent. Visually stunning, brilliant score/OST. Faithful to the original anime. I really don't understand all of the hate that this film got for casting a white woman (Scarlett Johanssen) as The Major. If these people that cast the hate they would see that their dissaproving finger wagging is totally unfounded. Once you watch this feature you get to see that original conciousness of Major is that of a Japanese girl that has died & her conciousness/spirit/ghost has been downloaded into a generic off the factory shelf SHELL ! It could just as easily be that of a Chinese or African or German body type or any other that people thath can afford to buy these machines as house servents or whatever, hell it even be carbon fibre. It makes no odds. The Major finds her bioligcal mother & she is a demure lonely Japanese woman. I really don't understand what the beef is here. Anyway regardless Scar Jo is awesome in this film.

  • @bubaks2
    @bubaks2 Před 3 lety +10

    They didn’t improve motoko in the live action. They took a different approach. The original 1995 version is a different style of videography and story telling all together.
    The live action is more character centric putting more emphasis on motoko. This is clear in how she is always the centre of the frame and main focus of the camera in certain key scenes.
    Whereas in the 1995 anime, the entire scene (background included) is the main focus, and motoko is shown as part of that scene.
    For example the scene jumping off the roof. If u compare the live action and anime side by side u can see it clearly. In the anime, motoko is always positioned somewhere off centre following the rule of 2/3rds.
    I wont say one is better than the other, but i do think this is reflective of western vs Japanese storytelling styles.
    Personally i feel nothing comes close to the original anime which was PERFECT.

    It's a foreign adaptation, so of course we Japanese expect the cast to be different. If we wanted a Japanese live action version, we would've done it ourselves (when a live action adaptation does happen in Japan, often the entire cast is Japanese, similarly to so-called white washing). This is more of an case of people on the internet being offended on behalf of somebody else while it never was an issue for them.
    There's more practical problem with Motoko's casting; there is no Japanese actress who can do decent action and speak fluent English. You just can't hire a Japanese for this role.

    • @SantiOwen91
      @SantiOwen91 Před 7 lety +7

      No, directors can't just cast whoever they want. Casting Scarlet Johanson has nothing to do with miss representing a minority (it's not a minority when she's playing a Japanese character in Japan). It's simply got to do with star theory, which is basically that actors have a fan base and people will watch a film with a certain actor simply because they are a fan. Scarlet Johanson has a fan base and a lot of people don't know what Ghost in the Shell is (let alone understand and appreciate it). What I'm saying is that Johanson was cast to guarantee a certain audience will pay the price of admission as a trailer to some cyberpunk science fiction film with some unknown or lesser known actress wouldn't be appealing to as many people, while to many seeing a well known actress in the role (and trust me you do this too) will now have interest in watching the film based of the logic of "Scarlet Johanson, i like her films, maybe this film will be good".

    *Spoilers* (if that's even a thing here) OK it's been years now, I remember watching Watchmen and leaving the cinema disgusted about the ending. I literally said to my friend “it feels like someone r***ed my dog“. But... After revisiting it I realised what they had to change to make it work on the screen and I ended up doing a full 180 and loved it. Ghost in the Shell however, I can't get past not making the antagonist an AI. That was the crux of the story, the blurred line between human and artificial. Seeing both characters reflections in each other from diametrically opposed starting points. It was what gave it existential breadth. The rest of the movie you talked about from effects, cinematography score etc. I agree with but I think taking altering the puppet master was just criminal and didn't leave the same questions. Why mix The puppet master and Kuze? It just kind of took it away from what I found the most interesting aspect of the original story. Of course that's just my opinion and that doesn't make it right. If you love it more power to you and I'm glad you liked it so much.
    It's not bad in any sense of the word but my disappointment with the reveal and the more tied bow ending was. It is still a beautiful cinema experience.

      OneShallStandOneShallFall This movie was great im tempted to call it Masterpiece, the complaining of people that they couldnt connect with the Character is what makes it perfect, because she is a Cyborg. Hope that future never comes.

      I loved that this movie was different from the original in so many ways! I don't understand why GITS fans trash this movie. It made me look at what Oshii told in the original from a different perspective, which is what I think Oshii would want a remake of his film to be.

      I kinda liked this movie even more than the anime version because the movie focuses more on Major as a character, I missed that part in the anime.
      But I think the movie blew it at the end.
      As for casting, it was great. Only petty assholes keep complaining about them.

    What amazed me Chris is that your review of this movie was the sixth review we watched on CZcams. The previous 5 reviews had us depressed and despondent. I was ready to not go to the film at all. But then we watched yours. After watching your review we watched no others. After seeing the movie i appreciated your review even more. I do not understand what the other reviewers were talking about. It's like they saw a different movie. A- works for me. This is a great movie.

    We would quickly realize Hollywood plagiarized many Anime without giving credit to the original

      "Speed Racer" isn't for everyone, but I agree. I actually really like the movie as well.
      While I can be a huge advocate of having good acting and stories in movies, there are times I get swept up by the colorful landscapes, action and the theme that I can bypass that critiques and have fun with a movie.
      Sometimes I don't want to watch a "Godfather" level movie. Sometimes, I just want to enjoy an "Armageddon" level movie.

      Huddy : What score would you give it? I didn’t know the source material. I loved the movie, and my only criticism was that it wasn’t violent enough. Not for the sake of it, but the bone crunching assaults and the shootouts kept leaving me feeling like they’d bent over backwards to avoid letting us see any blood, for the sake of the certificate? And, this review should have mentioned Michael Pitt’s brilliantly ambivalent performance, don’t you think? His voice, movement, everything about him, as the antagonist, goes from dark, brooding and sinister, when we meet him, to little boy lost and rather a sympathetic figure by the end. I had no idea that Pit was even capable of such a nuanced performance! More blood, and it would have been an, “A+”, for me. That’s why I just give it an, “A.”

    Several scenes in this film are exact in visual comparison to the original Ghost in the Shell (1995). Some parts shown in the city are even exact re-creations of the original artwork.
    Scarlett Johansson does not wear a wig in this film, her own hair was dyed black with blue tips.
    The body suit that Scarlett Johansson wears in the film as Major's synthetic body, known as the Thermosuit, is made out of silicone.
    The lights that seem to glow from the Geisha's robes were accomplished by lining the collars of the kimonos with LED lights.

    Here is something most people overlook. The Major in the original flim and show was actually a European model! She was built on that model for the simple fact that it was the cheapest there by the most common model used so she could blend in better in the areas she was to work in. if you notice in the original movie there are several background character that look almost exactly like her.

      It is an american film for american people. Sorry if your filmmakers and studios think that you (regular american people) are idiots and can't understand less commom stories. And of course changing the final act of the movie they already set a nort american continuation, but it would be nothing like the Ghost In The Shell 2 Inocence, cause they need Scarlet to star this thing and made a lot of money.
      But aside the plot it is a quite good flick, and they took entire action sequences from the original one. What kinda make this a poor stuff, cause the better stuff is the stuff from the animation. Anywais way better than I've expected to be and probably the better live action north american adaptation that I saw from a classical anime.

    I had no issue with the visuals, or even the casting. Those were fine and dandy. But the story, and changes to the characters' backgrounds was just so unnecessary. I will never understand why movie adaptations seek to reinvent something that already worked.

    Honestly, my biggest complaint was that they put on of the best scores of the movie in the end credits. It was the remake of the opening song in the original movie. It should have been played at the beginning of the movie when they were creating her.
    But other than that, I actually really like the movie :)
