    Let's face it. Even if the new movie is good, fans will still shit on it.

      It'll be near impossible for any Hollywood adaptation to live up to those expectation.

      They're been shitting on it since the first trailer simply because Scarlet Johansson isn't Asian.
      The real question is if this will be another Dragon Ball Evolution where everything is bad, or if it'll just be fans being ridiculous.

      Seems to me, you me and the author live in the same world, and seeing that he didn't keep his production of mind-blowing creations constant - he is no Tesla.

      @Blade Runner what part requires you to answer with curses?
      The author illustrated an idea he met, not one he generated - of all his works, only GinS and AppleSeed had this kind of affect on the world,
      It's not like every 3-5 years he makes a manga that gets anime and movie adaptations.

      Considering how many people watch & comment on his videos, gotta go a little easy on him in regards to reading them all. I'd be surprised if he actually reads all of them, but I expect he kind of skims through the comments.
      It's one the few advantages that small channels have over big ones: not as many comments to read so you can actually respond to them all and connect with the audience more.
      Popularity unfortunately causes a rift between the uploader & the fans because after a while there just are too many people, even if they want to be interact with all the fans like Markiplier for example. He wants to chat with all his fans but it's like impossible for him compared to 3 or 4 years ago because there's millions of people now.
      At some point you pretty much just stick with a group of longtime fans and then try your best to interact with newer ones if you can. :/

If 90% of the top comments are always the same joke told over and over while only a few actually discuss the actual film why would he bother reading them? Comments and views generates more income for them, that's why they want people to comment.

    Another great review, Chris.
    I was 9 when I watched GITS for the first time. My cousin let me borrow his VHS copy in 1996, and it blew me away. I also watched it multiple times just to try to even understand it because it was so confusing to me at the time, but so enthralling that I couldn't stop thinking about it. In 1999, a film came out called The Matrix. My dad took me to see that film a couple weeks after it came out, and we were both blown away. The thing is, I sat there the whole time comparing elements, and even scenes to GITS. "That's the market gun fight from the beginning with the Watermelons!" "Morpheus has Batou's glasses!" "They plug themselves in from the back of their necks to enter a computer world!" "The girl who played Trinity could totally play Motoko in a GITS movie, whey didn't they just make that?!"
    My dad and I enjoyed the hell out of the Matrix, and to this day it's still one of my favorite films. Plus, it was A LOT easier to wrap my head around than GITS (however, I was 3 years older by the time it came out), but were not for GITS, The Matrix wouldn't be what it was. It wasn't until years later when I found out the Wachowskis gave their producer a copy of GITS so get a feeling for what they wanted thematically and visually for the Matrix.
    GITS is still my favorite anime film to this day, and I'm excited to see what the adaptation will accomplish. A few things from trailers have me a little worried, like the new "Why can't I feel my body?" scene, so I'm not holding my breath, but I'm not pessimistic, either.

    "Gender identity" from walking around naked around others ... are you serious? Are the naked people at the nude beaches gender identifying as something they're not? How about animals that are always naked? Plenty of films show aliens naked and they're not worried about it either. Does the Terminator identify himself as a toaster?

      invertedactuator mont "civilised" people wouldnt entertain the idea walking around naked in public. when nudity is used symbolically it often means that a character is disconnected from humanity and society. it is also used to symbolize savagery as with animals. at this point, makoto doesnt even consider herself as having a gender.

    What struck me the most watching this movie was that it seemed like everyone involved in creating it put a lot of love and passion into it. They took their time to create a movie exactly how they envisioned it, in the exact way they wanted to do it, with the subject matter they personally found fascinating. There's simply very few films where this seems to be the case. That's what makes it one of the best all around movies ever made, IMO.

    The manga and Stand Alone Complex/2nd Gig series were much more sexual with Motoko and I found it even more interesting to see how she can behave extremely sexually, yet still has that disconnect to humanity. She enjoys sex, clearly, even has a sex site that she regularly gets involved with in the manga, but she doesn't seem to have any emotional attachment to sex. I love her and Batou's relationship because he respects her so much, yet he's also one of the only people she will openly rely on and open up with. I always kind of wished they ended up together, but I guess it's better that they didn't because that really held the integrity of the series.

    The controversy on Johansson staring in the new live action film got me interested in Ghost in the Shell (GintS) a couple of weeks ago. That's why I watched all of the original films and GintS: Stand Alone Complex and GintS: S.A.C. 2nd Gig. GintS was something I always heard about since I was a young and having watched them now, I think you hit the nail on the head when you described what the movie is about and who the characters are and why the film so good.
    I saw the original movie at 8 and was scared shitless by the imagery, but now that I'm older and have seen _WAY_ more f***ed up things on the internet, I have a new appreciation for the movie's themes and thought provoking existential questions. Now I've become a massive fan of the series and pretty much have joined in the concern for this new live action film. I'm kinda against the whole revenge motive for motoko (or whatever the name they gave her is) as it doesn't seem like her character. Not to mention how many other revenge films there are already. Hopefully its good.

    You misinterpreted a lot of things in the movie:
    1. The main concept isn't about the problem of "what it means to be a human", its about existence as an individual vs the collective existence. The first one is just a backdrop for the other... or actually one of the backdrops.
    2. The Puppet Master didn't just form himself inside the network, he/she was created as a special invigilator AI for the MFA with a codename 2501, and then later he/she developed a self-awareness and escaped into the Network, becoming the Puppet Master.
    3. The Puppet Master doesn't gripe with what makes a human, human, he gripes with the concept of survival by maintaining diversity.
    4. Motoko isn't fully machine, she has her original brain inside her head - it's not just her soul in form of data. The concept of a human identity being able to exist without the brain inside an artificial neural network is a controversial subject in the world of GitS and that's partially the reason, for which Motoko's "merging" with the Puppet Master and her transference into the Network leaves us guessing if it really worked or not. Is that still her? Is it her together with whatever the Puppet Master was? Is it a broader collective of consciousnesses? Or is it someone or something else completely, while the major is really dead?
    Watch it again. It's really deeper then it seams - even after the 3rd time watching.
    But all in all, it's a good review and set of observations.

      So I'm assuming the writer told you what the main concept of the movie is. What you listed is what you got out of it. The title says it all Ghost in the Shell, a big part of the concept in Ghost in the Shell, is about what it means to be human.

    • @shufukillah6772
      @shufukillah6772 Před 4 lety

      @@tinamoul it's more about defining a concept of personhood. We see from the beginning that Kusanagi is entirely cybernetic besides her brain. As a result, even though her body represents her biological sex, she appears to no longer have physical procreative urges and has therefore transcended sexual intercourse, so femaleness loses its meaning in that context. But she still has a drive to procreate, and the Puppet Master proposes a means to do that, as he has also developed a drive to procreate during his exploration of selfhood and finding meaning in his own existence.
      The result of this is tangentially explored in Innocence, even though Kusanagi has relatively little presence in the movie. This is what Haraway was getting at in her Cyborg Manifesto, and the character by the same name in Innocence sets up the context for Kusanagi's brief explanation of her experience since her disappearance in the first movie.

    • @Armadan7
      @Armadan7 Před 4 lety

      @@tinamoul That's part of it obviously, but there is a key disconnect in western audiences viewing an eastern film. I haven't seen the movie in a while, but I remember my problem with this movie being that while it does pose a lot of interesting philosophical questions that are well integrated into the plot and world, the dialogue about this philosophy feels horribly on the nose and forced. At times it feels like the director just lifted text from philosophy books and put it in to the character's mouths, so they speak to each other like they're reciting a formal debate. The second movie does this to an even greater extent IMO.

    One thing I like a lot about _Ghost in the Shell_ are these panoramic, dialogue-less city scapes and ambient shots which really sell you the city and time of this fictional universe. It's a whole different approach to worldbuilding compared to the exposition dumps and/or long narrations that western cinema uses to do the same thing.
    Comic theorist Scott McCloud talks about this difference in his books. While western comics prefer to go from action to action to propell a story forward, japanese comics like to go from location to location in order to give you this broad understanding of the place where things are happening.

    The most interesting thing about Makoto is was she ever really a person? Through this movie and the Stand Alone Complex (it takes place in an alternate universe but is very heavily inspired by the movie) we find out she doesn't even remember being alive in an organic body. Her consciousness has been copied and reformed so many times. Is she even alive? Was she a man or a woman? Does that even matter? Life, Death, rebirth. What does any of that mean to a machine? Is a soul the thing that is given to you or the thing you earn by realizing you are your own person. My head hurts. This movie is fantastic but I need a long nap every time I watch it.

      She was a person but the full body prosthesis happened when she was a child. So she struggles with the idea that she was once fully human and has paranoid delusions that she was created in the same manner as the puppet master. She is among the most cyberized individuals to ever exist. Even most of her brain is artificial. This is why she was chosen by the puppet master. Because most of her brain is artificial she can properly merge her consciousness with the puppet master's because the puppet master is entirely artificial.

    Cool review Stuckmann, GiTS '95 is a good entry point for noobs to the franchise, it's also a different tone from the excellent GiTS: Stand Alone Complex series (1 & 2). GiTS '95 has tons of atmosphere, an eerie tone/score...while the great series gets more into the characters of Section 9 during their story arc episodes (Laughing Man) and police procedural eps.
    I'd say GiTS '95 (film), GiTS: SAC series, and GiTS: Innocence (film) are my faves of the franchise (and I think the 2017 movie will be a hybrid of those 3 GiTS entries)...I'm really looking forward to the live-action film unlike most GiTS die hards seem to be, and hope it's successful so we can see more stories from The Major & Section 9...plus I want live action versions of those adorable Tachikoma tank units helping out Section 9 dammit!

    Hey Chris, if you liked the original film, I do recommend Ghost in the Shell Arise. A four episode miniseries and film that helps further the lore and the universe. I think you should check it out if you haven't already. Love your channel, Chris.

      Qiran Liang The parts showed in the trailer are a copy of the anime imagery, that's just the hook for fans, but I personally hope changes make the film an enjoyable version and those pretty much are my expectations. Anything beyond will be surprising.

      I won't hate on it. The bar is just way too high for it to do the original any justice. I'll watch it like a popcorn flick and pretend it's not Ghost in the Shell at all.

      That's probably for the best. Just as long as it isn't another DBZ Evolution I'll be fine with it, and it's obvious from the trailers released so far that it isn't going to disrespect the source material anywhere close to how that movie did.

    This is the very first full-length Anime movie I ever saw and it's still at the top in my mind (big mistake to see it FIRST, similar to having my first beer in Munich, after which all others paled in comparison). It led me to series like Cowboy Bebop, which is my favorite series ever. I agree with your points on Ghost in the Shell, that it's a phenomenal film that has inspired much of the sci-fi we currently enjoy.
    Side note: my wife and I were made aware of your channel through IHateEverything, and we've never looked back! Great videos, man. Your reviews (especially the Hilariosity ones) are awesome. Keep up the good work!

    SPOILERS : The puppet master was created as a weapon by section 6. It became sentient from absorbing more information during its missions. It's intended purpose was to carry out hacking missions on behalf for section 6. It is the first completely artificial ghost. Thats why when its cyberbrain is scanned it shows a human ghost , but without artefacts /imperfections from ghost dubbing. Every time the puppet master's ghost is dubbed its a perfect copy because it was an entirely artificial creation to begin with.

    One of my favorite films of all time. My expectations for the live action film are extraordinarily low. I hope it stays true to the original, but film studios have a hard-on for dumbing things down to pander to larger audiences.

    I got to be honest I didn't like all the expositor dialogue. To explain the world and how it functions sure. But characters that have known each other for awhile, explaining why they work together. Or stating how they feel instead of showing us, I felt dampened to movie for me at least. Not everything as to be told to us in a user manual kind of way. Maybe it was the subtitles I read, I watched this free on CZcams. Other then that loved the movie and the vibes it gives off. Your right it felt like the matrix or terminator, but in anime form.

    Chris, if you read this, don't let the negative comments about how you praise movies you grew up with get to you. I'm from the same generation as you and if movies like this, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Perfect Blue, etc. didn't exist I'm pretty sure anime would never have impacted such a broad audience as it has. People don't appreciate how difficult these types of movies were difficult to draw, market, and in the end be successful. There is a fucking reason why it has become a huge live action movie! Keep doing what you are doing, you are doing it correctly.

    • @brazwen
      @brazwen Před 7 lety +1

      I'm from the same generation. It's kind of sad how we're not seeing this kind of animation anymore. A lot of the modern are all about big boobs and butts and over stylized concepts. Nothing thought provoking and philosophical.
