Ghost in the Shell 2045 Anime Review: Way Better Than It Has Any Right To Be

- So I walked into this anime absolutely petrified that one of my favorite franchises was shot to piss. Thankfully, the show ended up being way better than I thought it was going to end up. Is it perfect? No. But there is clear love and passion behind this, and it shows.
I just want to point out: ghost in the shell was first serialized in '89
LONG before the internet became what we know it to be, today
The series deserves a hell of a lot of credit

Yeah, wtf was that. Motoko in this show has a scene where her team makes fun of her for using a female cyborg body and they allude to her being non binary in it as well. The fuck was that shit.
@@cuissonbake6917 actually, that short dialogue is easily one of the deepest postgenderist conversations in mainstream media. They actually suggested that Motoko only uses female body because she priorizes her identity as a female over combat effectiveness as a spec ops officer. It doesn't just suggest that changing sex is a common thing, but also adds that sexual identity is up on the scale with the other parts of our identity - like our job. Batou actually explicitely states that she should choose the combet effectiveness (job identity) over the emotional attachements to her female origins. Same with the analouge watch she wears sometimes.
And instead of making an argument against the sex change, Motoko demonstrates that she doesn't in fact need an upgrade in effectiveness. (As she easily hacks Battou and makes him punch his own face.)
Im not crazy when i assume he was referring to trans people right? Like, he literally said “She’s not gonna look straight into the camera and say “trans rights”, she knows they’re not people” cause thats really fucked up and awful

Notice that we get polarized against that opinion, started reacting to it, discussing it, even going into a more elaborate direction and connecting to franchise to the actual arguments. While the method might be distasteful and offensive, triggering people against a common enemy is a really effective way to educate them about those very values. This is an existing technique by the way, often used in literature and rhetorics, only not so blatantly.
I love the story and how for the dub they brought back all of the original cast
True! Colonel felt as badass as ever! Only complaint is why did they go CGI instead of 2d?? Love the 2d anime and movie, but CGI kind of threw me for a loop.

never understood why 3D animators haven't copycatted Spider-Verse's low-FPS animation technique to mask the "smooth uncanny valley" that plagues stylish / colorful 3D animation.
Mihoyo shorts for Honkai impact 3rd look amazing though
Spiderverse director revealed they had to rewrite their 3d software to accomplish that. It's out of reach for most production.

Animation may be not perfect, but I like them experimenting with style, anime will have to evolve and evolution never looks pretty. At least we all have 2016 Berserk as point of reference on how NOT make a CGI anime.
^ this, have to look at it in the sense that early 2D anime took a while to develop, CG quite literally reset the industry with animators and studios that had mastered 2D having to learn an entirely new set of tools and style with various degrees of success, and some amazing blending of the two (see almost anything UFOTable is pumping out)

I really liked this anime, absolutely loved the fact that they had the original Dub voice actors from GIT:SAC. As for the CG I've never had a "bad" bad experience so I've always been neutral towards it but if I ever see some good CG I'll definitely say it- the fact that Ghost in the shell has always had a history with CG helps since lets remember the manga back in the 80's had CG images in it.

Yeah, the dub was awesome in the original SAC series, and I was incredibly happy to hear every cast member of Section 9 reprise their role here. Some of these I haven't even heard in any other anime since Solid State Society (like Ishikawa, Borma and Pazu's actors), so the fact that they were willing to get back in the booth really added to the idea that these characters are truly back in action. And hearing Roger Craig Smith in a new anime with an important role doesn't hurt either.

I mean, as an adaptation, the original GITS is actually far away from the manga which is more 80s future cop with more comedy. Think Patlabor the series vs the movies.

I'll be honest, there are some times where I feel like I'm watching a Telltale Games production. But I'm liking the show so far...
One thing I especially love about 2045 is the English Dub. Like previous entries, the dub is incredibly well-handled, and somehow they managed to bring back the entire cast of Section 9's voice actors from Stand Alone Complex. It really sold the idea that the old gang was back together again.
Also I hate how they fucked up Togusa. "Lets just throw out all of his quirks and also the family man thing that LITERALLY DEFINED HIM AS WHOLESOME AND WONDERFUL with just a few lines.
It irked me. I was deeply irked.
There, that's what made me turned off with the latest installment of the GITS SAC universe.
But already in Solid State Society, we started to see that Togusa prioritizing work above family was taking a toll. it even put his daughter at risk. In that sense, it is a sad but not unexpected turn.
I confidently believe the 3d of this show is gorgeous. God, Motoko looks SOOOO good. The dark blue light night time atmosphere looks so beautiful in this style
Ngl, this actually convince me to watch GitS 2045, I mean I don't think the CGI is that bad. These people seems to know how to use CGI well like Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous). Kinda wished they combined 2D and 3D like that anime did.
No one can replace those Tachikomas, that's why everyone cried when they "died" :(
In SAC they do acknowledge a FULL cyberization as at least somewhat rare, and people like kusanagi, hideo kuze, kazundo gouda, and the people infected with the individual eleven virus. The individual eleven season also goes into detail about the major's abnormally young cyberization, before full cyber bodies were nearly as capable or popular as the ones in SAC's respective events.
I think pretty much everyone whose fully cyberized in SAC is shown to have some sort of connection to the military/intelligence communities, probably as they are the only entities capable of paying for it. Its telegraphed in the manga, but I think Arise has this as it's main plot point.
I believe production I.G is the only company that seems to get cg good, but then again they've been incorporating it with alot in the late 90s and early 2000s

So my brother were just watching this out of Boredom. By the end of the first episode he had a new waifu. I'd argue this was a success.
To be fair: Most anime today that looks 2d are actually 3d animations with a ton of shaders and post-production effects to look 2d. So having a full 3d looking anime, makes it a little more honest.
As a huge fan of the original SAC, I was kind of lukewarm on season 1, but season 2 brought me around to 2045. Also loved the NeoTokyo music you used in the background btw
I love the plausibility of GITS. Like the way Saito can connect directly to a satellite to line up a shot, or how Ichikawa seems to have a doctorate on how to deal with cyber viruses. The technology is practical. In a world of near constant global conflict you will have a constant evolution of weapons and protocol, so when Batou runs into something that we haven't even invented yet he can accurately call it obsolete junk.
I just hope we get that second season soon. It feels like the cgi studio that made this also did, Cyborg 009, Ultraman, and these Godzilla movies as well. Some of those shows didn’t get another season is all I’m saying. At least it’s good to know this Ghost in the Shell spin off is actually trying.
So Togusa is 15 years older,but hasn't aged a day. Arimaki was older in SAC and 15 years later he's gotta be in his 70s

I actually really enjoyed it overall (for the most part anyway) but wished they had used the same animation from the original Standalone Complex series, I also wish they hadn’t use that stupid theme song at the start of it that seems so jarring and so not like a song from the Ghost In The Shell soundtrack. It would be like having The Monster Mash song put in the soundtrack to Blade Runner, it just feels so out of place. In in spite of that skippable theme song and animation that made me lament that they didn’t use the same type of animation from from SAC, I nevertheless found myself actually really enjoying the series as a whole when it came to the premise and themes about Japan struggling to hold onto its identity in an increasingly globalized world. Also I found it really intriguing that it happens to be set in the year 2045 which incidentally is the very year “The Singularity” is supposed to happen so I thought it was very interesting to explore that as The Post Humans in the series are heavily implied to be the long prophesied Singularity finally come to fruition. It also just occurred to me that considering how unappealing the theme song was it just hit me that the song “Between Two Points” by The Glitch Mob

After watching SAC2045 and rewatching SAC and 2nd GiG right afterwards I found it was jarring how low the framerate was in the old anime. Strange thing to complain about, I know.
2045 was like a comfy cgi blanket. I like the fact that it is ambiguous whether section 9 is necessarily the good guys. I look forward to seeing pink hair grow and become more serious, just like Togusa grew in SAC. I wonder what happens to Togusa.

I feel like this show gets a lot of criticism for the 3D animation. However I don’t mind the fact that they tried something new stylistically. My expectations weren’t as high going into this one. I never thought the sequel would recreate the magic of the original, but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s not as philosophical nor as nuanced as the original but the story was still intriguing imo
kurokocchi sama Can I debate you on this, “not as philosophical” point? I think it’s a different brand of philosophy. One that abstracts less and focuses on finding the interesting stuff that’s most tangible. The idea of selling ad-space inside your own eyes and swatting away pop-ups like flies is a great example. There are LAYERS to that metaphor. Would you do that for a loan? Should you? How often do you look at your phone? Maybe you already have? *Swipe swipe*
This series also does an exceptional job of posing the philosophical questions without saying them out loud. While I loved it, it turns out that a lot of people prefer not to have their philosophy read to them as part of a fireside chat with Neo and The Architect.
If you think hard about the questions that you have, the philosophy does itself. We have so many questions about meta-humans. It’s always been suggested that for The Major, she’s like Neo and the rest of us are all blue pills. You simply can’t beat her ability to process her environment. However, if she’s Neo, manipulating the system as she sees fit, then post-humans are like a race of Architects. Could man ever create such godly power? How would such power direct itself? What if there were more than one such power? Would they clash? Could they clash? Can omnipotent being disagree? Is there a difference between two omnipotent beings? Et cetera.
Ended up with similar thoughts. Was extremely surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Big props to the episode 6. Had me on edge when the shit started happening. Looking forward to the next batch of episodes. That said, I take issue with a few things here and there as a fan of GitS (semi-spoilers for the franchise):
-Togusa has always been the family man, and mostly human. These make up the bulk of why the Major recruited him for Section 9. That tie to family was part of what let the Major crack the case in Solid State Society. Also in SSS, Togusa took on more cybernetic parts, and was essentially the second-in-command of Section 9. And now he's divorced, and no peep at all on the status of his cybernetic parts, but he's moving around like someone who hasn't aged 11 years since SSS. He's like any other Section 9 member, which is the exact opposite reason why the Major wanted him, so it fell really flat to me when the Major told Togusa in 2045 "if you find out who's bugging the room, I'll accept the chief's/PM's/America's offer and let you on the team". And he seems to not give a single iota of a shit how his children are doing; no phone call to them, no throwaway text message moment. All this is robbing the show of some depth, but c'est la vie.
-Part of Aramaki's shtick in SSS was his aging, and preparing the next generation. He and Batou had that conversation in the car about it. This was hammered nicely by the fact that in SSS, Aramaki uses a cane the entire time. Now the cane is gone, and he's seemingly the exact same age he was in 2034 (SSS).
-Do Borma and Pazu even exist? Arise did them more justice for christ's sake. Some lines given to Purin could have been given to Borma or Pazu.
-The tachikoma, oh boy. I'll let this go and see what the rest of the show has planned for them, but for now I was disappointed the writers for 2045 didn't remember the line from season one where the tachikomas are deriding a Section 9 android for its "stereotypical thinking pose", and had the tachikomas do that at least twice in 2045.
A lot of this could simply be written off as "we didn't have the budget to care about these things, we wanted to do this story about post-humans", and that's fine. But like I said, 2045 is being robbed of some depth. Still gonna watch the hell out of those next episodes.

I have only ever seen that clip where the guy gets naked and pre-naturally starts dodging bullets - I immediately dismissed this entry, being co-produced Netflix doesn't help either... You might just have persuaded me to look deeper into this series.

I loved the concept of "Sustainable War", that is very realistic if you look at how companies like LMT and GDLS need conflict or the threat of conflict to be viable. The animation is just different and once you get used to it, it's fine. Love the focus on action and I even like the theme song, I think the series could use a fresh aesthetic.

The Neotokyo soundtrack is a gem
I still hold it negatively overall for all the reasons you stated and I have watched the whole series. Mostly because the best thing about Ghost in the Shell when we come down to it is its story, which is incomplete in the 12 episodes, so until the next season or half of it comes around, I consider it too early to give it or take any points in that area. It looks promising, but lets see what they do with it. I was underwhelmed on animation, music and about everything else other than seeing Tachikomas nostalgia.
However with every passing season/interpretation of GITS I see a Hayao Miyazaki problem with it. As he said, it looks too anime and further and further from real people. It seems like every key detail about their design is being dulled down slowly into a Funko pop doll version of anime. I can get used to that in most anime, but I dont think that GITS can afford this. It has to compete with extremely beautiful and refined versions of itself done so many years ago. This is an issue even if we excuse the CGI
I might give this a try sometime. At least the old voice cast from Stand Alone Complex had returned.
Honestly the 3D animation style they have makes me want to watch it more. To often you have absolute garbage like Berserk and Knights of Cydonia where they just made clay blobs in the general shape of a human then put googly eyes on it. With this animation it looks like they actually took the time to make sure the shadows weren't as dark as a black hole. or (with berserk) 90% of it is just flat out un-textured.

In 2nd Gig it is strongly hinted that both Motoko and Kuzo were some of the first full cybers around, which also explains how they master their bodies and cyberbrains compared to the rest, so Motoko being "unique" is not a new theme in the GitS franchise
Goddamnit, I wish I watched this before Netflix revealed its diddler side.
I am afraid that the fans will kill this. and we won't get a second season. the 6.3 star rating on IMDB is so sad for what this is. this is amazing. I fear that this it will be like Star Wars.. and they will hand the next season over to Kathleen Kennedy. then the fans will beg for it to go back to the way it was. "please! give us more of that sweet CGI.. as long as the plot makes sense and is written by the people who actually know it!"
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I enjoyed the CG. I think it showed the unnatural movements (superorganic? postorganic?) of the post-humans better than it would have looked in 2D animation.

Can't say I'm a fan of the Code Lyoko esque art style, but I'd take it over that choppy, low framerate shit they did for Envy in FMA:B, or anything resembling RWBY.
But i may have to rewatch GitS, and check this out sometime.
I tried watching it, but I couldn't get more than 3-4 episodes in before I had to stop. This was NOT ghost in the Shell. It had none of the intelligence, none of the wit, or introspection. The music didn't fit at all, the characters were parodies of themselves, and the world was a bad meme conglomeration based off Metal Gear and pseudo-politics.
The story is pretty good.
The hate for the animation is way too overblown. It might not be perfect, but I can see an honest attempt at steering CG anime in a good direction. Might as well improve it if we will be stuck with it for the foreseeable future. Plus, this is still Ghost in the shell SAC since it is written and directed and mostly produced by the same people that made SAC.

So I haven’t seen any of the older ghost in the shell anime or movies. The only ghost in the shell I have access to is the sac_2045 and the sac_2045 sustainable war.

I've watched SAC2045 in its entirety at least a dozen times , now ,and will continue to do so , much to the chagrin of my wife. Also a huge fan of all the other GITS shows. =)

What a excellent discription of GOS... It's my favourite anime of all time. I watch it annually and always find new things. The latest GOS definately stayed true to the iconic SAC story world.

I prefer English dub of GITS and I must say this was pretty good. I was nervous going into it but ended up enjoying it, just pissed that I have to wait for the next season -__-
I just watched this and by gosh it was / is good!! I honestly appreciated how tough, focused and down to earth the Major is compared to her movie live action adaption of Ghost in the Shell!!
So after seeing the series, I have to wonder if the "Post-Human" will have any connection to the Laughing Man from SAC. In SAC Aoi who was believed to be the laughing man said he was just an imposture and the real Laughing Man was a computer AI. Given that Aoi has displayed similar abilities as the Post-Humans, as the Laughing Man, one could speculate that Aoi was the AI's prototype. Multiple-cyber brain hacking in real-time, memory altercations.. etc.

Kusinagi is portrayed in SAC as an early case of a full cyborg body as shown in the episode with the boy folding paper cranes. That detail in the live action movie isn't fully off.
This still looks way better than the berserk 2016-2017 adaptation, we’ll never get a good berserk adaptation unfortunately :( :( :( :(

This SAC 2045 is inferior to the previous SAC 1st and 2nd Gig. Seasons. I hope Kenji Kamiyama make better stories with more writers in staff for the 2nd season. This POP PS3 Game version version lacks the Stand Alone Complex stories and engagement that we know. From Arise to this late installment the quality is not improving. Let’s see what they can do for the next 12 episodes.
Dude you realise if they didn't use CGI the show would've been more expensive? It's cheaper to draw CGI models and use them on repeat rather than draw every single details and every single frame

Agreed on the part where there's not enough of this show. It feels like the show stops just as the Post-Human plot starts to ramp up. The animation is actually quite decent for 3DCG, though I still wish that they still went for the 2D route at least similar to the Arise OVA since the show feels less gritty with the smooth textures of 3DCG.
Honestly when I watched it on Netflix I was kinda neutral on it and mostly used to it, I was upset about the cliffhanger at the end though.

Only just saw this but it and the follow on was a good and how well they followed the info on SAC, 2nd Gig, Solid State Society etc. I liked the show and the second show.
