Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence - The Incredible Sequel That Deserved Better

  • After the release of the 1995 film, Ghost in the Shell, Mamoru Oshii took a break from the franchise for almost a decade before returning in 2004 to make a sequel bigger and bolder than its predecessor. Sadly albeit the sequel's deep science-fiction themes and blend of 2D and 3D animation, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence was overlooked by filmmakers for simply being animated.

I just realized I left in that the character of Volkerson had a daughter he wished to save. This is in fact false and the girl was simply a stray that was kidnapped. I got my characters confused due to Togusa's daughter also appearing at the end of the story. Nice to know I still haven't lost my touch in messing up which character is which in my videos!

The fact that Innocence was so underrated shows how ahead of its time and complicated it was.

I liked the first film enough, but Innocence just blew me away. I never thought I'd consider a somewhat niche anime sequel one of my favorite films ever.

It's cool to see another Ghost in the Shell video from you. Innocence is such an unnderated masterpiece. The visuals and the atmosphere are stunning, and I love just how creepy it gets. Like its kind of a horror film at times and I love it. Theres also a pretty strong noir vibe that I really liked, with the cars, the setting and how it follows 2 detectives. Also as much as I love tge Major as the protagonist, I thought Batou was great here and this is easily my favorite version of him. I tgink the thing I want the most from Ghost in the Shell, is something with a similar vibe to the Oshii movies. I love how much more serious and moody they feel, and how they get a lot deeper into philosophical stuff. I love SAC, but the more I thinjk about it I think the Oshii films are my favorite version of Ghost in the Shell.

Aye man I agree. You pretty much typed out my same thoughts lol. I've never seen an animated film that made me contemplate and want to learn about this world and what the future may hold.

    Awesome video!
Usually these movies which extremely philosophical and much less pratical aren't my cup of tea, but in the particular case of Innocence I found myself so interested in the movie and the questions Oshii was asking/trying to answer that I found myself pausing, repeating scenes and searching out the various philosophers and architectures mentioned and shown in the various scenes out of pure fascination. Truly a masterpiece.

    I need that book..
I love GITS 2 Innocence. I like it more than 1995 movie. But it's hard because of how much I love the 1995 movie, it's just that GITS 2 tickle the philosophy parts of my brain and the visuals of the shoot out in the small store or the loop-trap is so stunning. I think in terms of a movie, GITS 1995 is the better movie, I love that version of Motoko, she's relatable unlike the amazonian she becomes in later incarnations. But GITS 2 Innocence is an experience. I guess.

Innocence, for me, was one of the most incredibly beautiful sequels to Ghost in the Shell ever created. The animation was so ahead of its time and it deserves more recognition.

really really well made essay. you must have put a huge amount of research into this… thank you so much for all those informations. I cant explain why, but GiTs has been stuck with me for so long now and made me start digging into ‚cyberpunk‘ as a whole. and I think no new movie or story will ever top the profound level of philosophy from innocence. def going to check out the references you mentioned in this video 💪 shout out from germany

I'm about to go to a showing of the remastered version of Innocence tonight. I'm really excited to see it again.
I saw it in the theater on its release and I found it to be woefully slow-paced and I didn't like that it had the characters of Batou and Togusa having lengthly conversations with one another about philosophy - I felt like it was telling, where the original movie had been so good at showing. Also, while the original movie does move at a deliberate pace, I remember feeling like Innocence got lost in its navel-gazing for long periods. I was much younger then (obviously) and I'm looking forward to coming back to it with fresh eyes and a more mature viewpoint!

Just saw it in theaters... they played a mini doc, oshii states that dogs are technically created by man, bred and modified for the needs of man, you can see the paralells between dogs and robotics, ai etc.
Batou imo has a basset hound because it reminds him of the major; something technically created by man kind, molded to the needs of man, but unlike the major, the sweet cute dog cannot be disposed of once its purpose its fufilled, unlike the major, who would be significantly altered if not decomissioned after the government is done with her, compounded by the fact that her body is government property
The dog must be fed, and cared for regardless of its usefulness, regardless if it outlives the purpose of its breed, wheter its being a dog for utilitarian purposes or a dog for companionship, young or old, you cant just dispose of the dog on a whim and get a new model... the truest mark of counter culture in a world of cybernetics, ai, and robotics.
This is just one small thing to look into with this film... its dense

Thank you for this. I'm going to see this movie again. I was looking forward to seeing it for the first time, but when I did I came away with the impression that the philosophical success of the first movie had gone to the creators head and he had doubled down on the philosophy with too many quotations. Seemed to slow and complicate the story more than it needed to be. I see what my second viewing will do for me.

Hi! You're not wrong there at all. And I don't know if you've seen the video by now but I do bring that accomplishment up in the final section. I tried to intentionally hyperbolize that point as to demonstrate how even an award is not enough to have people's eyes finally gaze upon it in a more multifaceted manner. I did so by showing how the few open minded critics did see something special in it rather than just some Japanese cartoon as well as made a joke of it being the only other animated D'or nominee next to Shrek 2. Because at least from personal experience the sequel is still much more overlooked and rarely discussed as everyone always just goes to talking about the original or SAC instead. Hope this cleared my choice of words up.
