- This episode I start the wall insulation with PIR Insolation board and plastic bottle roof insulation. I also shows how I am doing a vapour barrier and do it in a few different ways. Getting the insulation of my van build right for keeping warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Great series of vids. I'm in the midst of planning a build this summer - I'm dreading and gasping to get going in equal measures. I'll be working from a generator in multiple locations so as not to piss the neighbours off, too, so it should be interesting doing the build el fresco. Class stuff with your recent vids in the upper refrigerated quadrants of Europe. All the best from Dublin.
Building alfresco is a self built van builders tradition, improvise overcome, be at Sun or pissing rain, which is most the time 😂 glad you’re enjoying the series and find it helpful. It’s a daunting task if you look at the bigger picture, but break it down time and less so. It’s a labour of love.

Would there be a good reason for not using expanding foam in difficult to reach areas?
Im not a fan of expanding foam. I’d prefer not to use it.

As in total insulation? It can be problematic if you have a leak or need welding done.
What are your thoughts on Plus Nuts for holes that weren't threaded from the factory? Would save you having to drill into the frame.
Plus nuts would been a nice option if I had access to them at the time, probably made life a little more difficult trying to line everything up. Since my frame was already filled with many many screw holes from the previous owner’s multiple layers of plywood covering the wall I didn’t have too many worries about adding a few more.
Tell us more about why you didn’t want to use the expanding foam?
As it’s pretty permanent, and if you spray too much into some of the cavities and it expands too much it can bow out the metalwork of the van on the inside or the outside
Hi, how did you work out the angles to cut the plywood for the wheel arch covers? They look spot on!
I used the original ply wood surrounds them as a template. But to be fair they were pretty much about 45°
@@MispronouncedAdventures ahh okay, I didn’t have any previously! I’ll start with 45 and play around with it! Good idea though!! Haven’t seen many using celotex to insulate them!
Yeah 45 is a good starting point. I just had loads of the insulation board so just seem like a good idea
Liking your build series , cracking job. I'm on flooring at the moment . As an idea can you not use rivnuts for the wall battens ?
I was unaware of their existence at the time. That would’ve been a good solution would probably consider using them if I was doing it again.
Qn: On the assumion that you turn your indoor heater on in the van when it's cool/cold/wet outside, am I right in thinking that your relative humidity is always fairly low (do you know approximately? If the RH is low, then would you in retrospect say that concentrating so much on a vapour barier was as important as you originally thought?
I still would say vapour barrier is very important. But I have different views than most on how and why. I’d say the vapour barrier doesn’t need to be completely a seal or complete on the inside just block the vast majority of moister air. I pretty much keep my max fan on extracts by about 10% continuously summer or winter. So humidity isn’t really a problem when the heating is on its normal less than 50% down to 20% whilst outside might be 99% . I found the vast majority of moisture in the walls originally came from the outside of the van than the inside. There are so many hole for the classic or body panels clips
@@MispronouncedAdventures So just to clarify, you think the majority of the water/vapour on the inside skin of the van penterates in from rain water/condensation from the outside?
@@NevContractor1 in my case yes, so much water got in via the plastic body panel trim clips leaking it’s was mad, you can see in the transit, the water running down the outside and disappearing begins the lower plastic body panels
Are holes in side of van already threaded enabling you to use bolts to fix timber?
It was a mix. There were a few M8 threaded bolt holes in the walls and roof which came stock with the van. which I used for attaching the timber, but I also used self tapping screws in areas without thread bolt holes
What thickness recycled plastic thermal fill are you using? It looks like maybe 100mm?
I found most DIY shops in the UK sold it as a one size fits all. I believe it’s about 100mm. As the wall cavities in the transit are really quite deep that thinkness works well as it’s not compressed in the wall cavity
@@MispronouncedAdventures Perfect, thankyou. I'd seen online a mixture between 35mm - 100mm so I think I'll opt for the 100mm too. As you say, looks like it fills the cavity perfectly for the transit. Much appreciated and thank you for the comprehensive van build, I'm at around episode 15 and every episode has had helpful hints and tips!
What size are the blue battens you are using are they 38 X 25
Aye 38mm x 25mm is most places. A few times on the walls I used the next size up which I think is 50mm x 25mm

Because I was a bit rubbish I used 63x38 in the framing everywhere...would it be worth swapping to 38x25 in the framing. (Mk8 transit minibus xlwb) so your van but with windows everywhere
It's good to schedule your work so you doing waste insulation tape and materials on walls you are having windows cut into as the glazing company will take longer due to obstructions
Yes window panels ( to be cut at a later date ) and roof vent holes were less unobstructed for this reason
