  • My beloved Quincey makes an appearance in this one. She's the girl in the red collar. Miss her! Please everyone - I'm going to turn off comments if I have to read one more about the stupid PSI crap. It's been pointed out as wrong. It's been pointed out as dumb! It's been pointed out more times than I plan to count. Dr. Stanley Coren got his "facts" wrong. It doesn't need to be noted for the 1000th time. Thanks!

    I have a very big female rottweiler that I have adopted from the RSPCA back in 2008 and I saved her on the day she was going to die. Her name is Sally but I call her Big Sal or Miss Sally due to her big but beautiful appearance, She was born in March 2002 and Sally has been a great asset and benefit to my life after six years of owning her and 12 years of her beautiful long lived life.
    Despite being very old and possibly being on her last legs and slowing down, Sally is still beautiful at 12 and it doesn't stop her being a foster mother to Rosetta, a young rottweiler pup that I have to Sally when she turned 12 since she would possibly not have long to live and she didn't have the chance to be a mother again. Even when Miss Sally passes away I will still remember the best times I had with the beautiful lady as I stare at her final resting place which will be a bed of roses on my garden since she loves to rest there due to the lovely fragrance.

    I have a rottweiler named Bella and a golden named Saide and after 12 years experience with these dogs and 15 years of dog training, fostering and care for other dogs with them I can say that Bella is the most mild mannered gentle and intellegent dog I have ever had. At times she could be very hyper and she can switch from family mode to protection mode very fast but with proper training early on at the puppy stage rottweilers become one of the best dogs you could ever own.

      Let's be honest, the doctored tale is to increase the intimidating look of the dog, unfairly. When a dog is in high spirits and friendly demeanour, it's gonna wag its tail, if there ain't no tail to wag...."we" can't easily gage its mood and thus become more readily intimidated. It's a barbaric act and unfairly puts the dog in a disadvantageous position of not being understood by public, which is then disastrous for the image of the breed.

    my home was broken into this week and I've always loved this breed so have been doing more research on it. I need a dog that will immediately bark as soon as someone knocks and be ready to protect if needed. where do you draw the line with socialization so the dog isn't so friendly it's a Teddy bear to everyone?

    • @buffaloroams2
      @buffaloroams2 Před 7 lety +5

      With Rott's it's better to error on the side of friendly. Rott's genetically are prone to being territorial and aloof to strangers. Mistake too many people make is believing they need to make their dog mean or aggressive to be protective, Rott's in particular need to be well socialized so they don't deem innocents to be a threat, although they have a great sense of discrimination as to what is a true threat. If you want them attack trained I would suggest a professional trainer or getting involved in a Schutzhend club as a poorly trained Rott is a liability. Better to be obedience trained and well socialized then getting poorly trained and overly aggressive. Their breeding will have them naturally protective, they don't need programmed to do that, they need trained to know when it's appropriate. While Rott's aren't typically big barkers, they will naturally sound off if they perceive any threat. We train ours NOT to bark as low growling is sufficient to alert us they have determined a threat and we don't wish for them to give away our position or theirs. And ultimately if someone is close enough to hear them growl, you will find it much more frightening then uncontrolled barking. Their growl will have an intruder peeing themselves. Having said all that, Rottweilers make great family dogs as they are very loving and protective of their family unit, caution is advised around strangers though until they realize the stranger is welcome on your property. They will often act on your cues, if you are cautious of a stranger they are much more likely to strike a defensive posture.

    I am living now in South East Asia. No way i can have a Rottweiler here, very little garden, no place to walk with him, when you live in the middle of a city. For my slef its sad that i can not have a Rottweiler again, but its good for the dog. To many people keeping a big working dog on a small apartment, that's animal abuse. Then they wonder the dog start biting or any other bad behavior. When i am in pension in a view years, i will take, what i call a " city dingo". Learn him all, and the dog and for sure me will be happy. Where i live, they eat dog meat, so i have to take care very good....

      It is roughly 2000 Newtons. The mastiff has the hardest bite around 550 psi (which is about as much as a lion). The Rottweiler is one of the highest though at 328 psi. (of course as the article I'm linking below mentions it can balloon up dramatically depending on the size of the dog and where in the jaw the victim's limb is)

    Rotts are strong dogs, and they are kind of tough. But the American Pitbull is more so. American Pitbulls are stronger, more athletic, tougher, have higher pain tolerance, are tested and proven to have better temperaments, are more versatile working dogs, and are the best gladiators that have been, and still are, used to battle large animals like bears and hogs. American Pitbulls are also better competitors that dominate and are the favorite breed in strength and athletic sports like weight pulling. I have seen American Pitbulls pull over 12,000 pounds. Even though rotts are also used in weight pulling, I have never seen any rott able to pull half of that or compete on the same level as American Pitbulls. American Pitbulls were bred as farm dogs to help farmers and protect them from livestock, especially the bulls. If the large animal tried to attack the farmer, the American Pitbull would take the bull on and control it. For more info on the American Pitbull - www.dailymotion.com/video/xaf5xb_pit-bull-dog-breed-explained_animals
    Here is more info on them for people that like reading over watching videos and learning even more info - www.dogbreedinfo.com/americanpitbull.htm
    Like it says, *the American Pitbull was bred as an all-around farm dog, working the farms as a cattle/hog dog. Some chose to turn their talents into the sport of pit-fighting. The breed's tenacity and accompanying strength are unmatched in the canine world. Pitbulls excel in practically every canine task including herding, guarding, hunting, policing, cart pulling and ratting. A Pitbull named Banddog Dread holds more canine working titles than ANY other breed*.

      I was wondering about that. I will be a first time owner but I want a boy. Male animals always work better for me,never owned a Rott but my other boy animals have always been SUPER protective of me & that's what I like because I am a loner type of girl.
      Why do you suggest female?

    • @MidniteSon
      @MidniteSon Před 10 lety +1

      LoveMusic4652 I think if the owner is a female, it might be okay to get a boy, but they are pretty strong, you'll need a harness for walking. Mentioned female because they are generally less aggressive and less likely to challenge you. Since you are a girl and already experienced with dogs, as long as you get one with very good temperament, you should be fine. But still be sure to talk to the breeder more about sex type before you purchase.

      Rottweiler Loyalty People who don't love animals are dangerous. A dog is a dog, it's not a human. Give a dog rules, teach him a lot with fun and a dog will love it. My Rotti is maybe just smarter then the so called many dog trainers think they are. Its a house dog, nothing more. But a Rotti is also a watchdog and you must be carefull with that, particular when he young not to let him do, and learn him the wrong thinks. My dog never fights with other dogs, he is just ignoring a aggressive dog. If he gets attacked he is only defending, not biting. He simply runs them down, that's it. Strange enough he was only attacked two times, for the rest never problems. One time by a big German shepherd, he was running him in the ground and it was done, no bite, no damage, nothing. The second time was funny, he was attacked by a small terrier, that was for him even more dangerous, because they intend to bite in the legs from a bigger dog. So he was really jumping away, till he had his chance to put his nose under the dog, Well, the small dog was flying 2 meters and over was the fight. My neighbors have a big male cat, no problem, he comes in when the backdoor is open, drinking some water from him and start sleeping on the sofa. They friends, never a problem. I was learning him when he was young not to hunt on cats, and for him every cat is ok, also in his own house. Who is dangerous here then..?

      how do you socialize but not over socialize so the dog isn't just a Teddy bear to everyone? I need a breed that will bark when someone knocks or the doorbell rings but one I can walk around the block and take to the park without terrorizing people and other dogs. I have many questions.

    • @gamingmatrix7644
      @gamingmatrix7644 Před 8 lety

      You can be very socialized outside the house. As long as you do not socialize him with people inside of the house. He will learn outside house friendly inside house be on gaurd. Due to he is not used to socialization in his home. But regardless you do not want him to be mean in any way shape or form. Rottys can inflict lots of damage and you will not be able to stop him. Hitting him to stop he will not feel it and his strength will make it difficult to pull back. So socializing is very important in and out of the house just less in the house than outside
      . they will bark when someone is on property regardless.

      Thanks bill. I have friends come over from time to time. I take it they'll know from my reaction that they are friendly. I'm in a very dog friendly city. We take our dogs to parks, restaurant/bar patios, etc. I had a German Shepherd that was in this type of environment and he was so friendly that when in the backyard anyone could just walk back there and he would cuddle up. I felt like maybe I "over socialized" to the point that no one is a stranger. I know of some people who just kept there dog only in the home and backyard, really no Petsmart, parks, or anywhere public. I told them that this is bad for their dog to be protective and they need him to be wary of anyone at all times. Like as if he's a true working dog with a purpose and not really a pet. I almost felt like having one dog like that at all times that I just put in the room when people come over but that makes me feel guilty...I'm a public dog person. I don't want a beast but at the same time after getting my home broken into I almost feel like that's what I want. A dog that will be fierce. I'm against chaining a dog up in a backyard for it's life. That's where many problems arise. I also don't want to bother neighbors with constant barking. I sound contradictory saying I want almost that chained up dog aggression. Maybe I'm just traumatized from everything right now. I would definitely keep my dog inside. The burglary was in broad daylight as many happen during the day. Professional training for me is just too expensive. I have thought about just buying a trained adult...they are way in the thousands. I guess my question is where to draw the line. I know temperament will vary from dog to dog. Sorry about the long ramble...just still shocked all this happened! I've been thinking about getting a rottie for years and this only makes me want one more.

    Defo do not recommend this breed for first time dog owners... or wanna be gangstas, or girly "omg he soooo cute" people, or Smurfs, or hobbits, or anyone French.

    Who is the idiot at 2:00 who tells us that the Rottweiler has a bite of "two thousand pounds per square inch." For the record, this is TOTALLY FALSE. Bite force has been measured many times on different breeds and no breed of dog has a bite anywhere close to that. Rotties bite with about 330 lbs of force. German Shepherds and Dobies average around 240 lbs. The largest Mastiffs may approach 500 lbs force. And one more thing, it is not a "per square inch" measurement. Guys like him always throw in the "per square inch" reference, like it makes them sound smarter or something. It's a simple pressure gauge, like standing on a bathroom scale. No "per square inch" measurement involved.

Like it says the American Pitbull Terrier was *bred as an all-around farm dog, working the farms as a cattle/hog dog. Some chose to turn their talents into the sport of pit-fighting. The breed's tenacity and accompanying strength are unmatched in the canine world. Pitbulls excel in practically every canine task including herding, guarding, hunting, policing, cart pulling and ratting. A Pitbull named Banddog Dread holds more canine working titles than ANY other breed*.

      footbalr074 Prove it then. Show me were rotts can be seen pulling over 12,000 pounds - www.yourepeat.com/watch/?v=WtA5XlHWZRg
      Where is the rott temperament test score from the ATTS? Don't bother, I';ll tell you. It is 84.1%. The American Pitbull's score is 86.8. You think the rott is more versatile? Is that why the dog with the most working titles is an American Pitbull? Now get back to reality.
      Idiot fangirl.

      They are both great dogs but it will depend on what work. I've owned working Rottweilers and spent a good amount of time with some Pitbulls. For something like weight pulling or fighting the drives of a Pitbull would be better but for every other element of work a dog does like Police work that involves human interaction the Rottweiler with it's far superior intelligence will win hands down. I've seen it time and time again. Get two untrained dogs and try to teach it something new. The Rottweiler will get it after a few attempts. Pitbulls might need 50 attempts. Horsepower between the ears counts for more when it comes to most types of work.

      intellectualgladiata Every other element of work? No. Not hunting. Rotts are not better hunters. They hardly, if ever, used to hunt. Especially not larger, more dangerous animals like wild boar - www.yourepeat.com/watch/?v=ySc32aZC9hQ
      Not controlling livestock like bulls on farms. Not athletic and agility stuff like this - youtubeonrepeat.com/watch/?v=jy5DROH13PQ
      We take all this into account, we can see why a Pitbull holds the record for most working titles than any other breed. And one of the main reasons they are farm greater and more able in combat and weight pulling is the horsepower between the ears. It is much more than their superior physical abilities that get them through and have them do more than rotts. Mental stability, focus, determination, and a strong will to work. Rotts lack the mental and some physical aspects to be great at such work.
