Who is Link from the Original Legend of Zelda?

- The Legend of Zelda franchise has many mysteries and a rich history to discuss, so for this Origin Oracle, we're going to take a look at Link...the original one. How did Nintendo come up with his character and design. I'm TheMentok and we'll be journeying back to the 1980s to discuss origins of Link as well as the Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: Adventure of Link.

A Couple Corrections:
-Nintendo R&D1 was led by Gunpei Yokoi but was separate from Miyamoto’s R&D4 team
-Nintendo Mini Classics were released in 1998
I guess Zelda G&W follows a Link, who attempts to rescue Zelda who somewhat echoes or reboots the sleeping one from Zelda 2. He fails, but Zelda is resurrected as Sonia and goes back in time to resurrect Link as King Rauru. This is then further rebooted as Sonia and Rauru representing the old era of Zelda in TotK, almost like Zelda meeting herself in old age. The same way there was a Young Zelda adn Old Zelda in Link's Adventure.
I guess.
Guess.
Link can be summarized as
1. He come to town
2. He come to save the Princess Zelda
Link, fill up your hearts
So you can shoot
Your sword with power!
He came, he saw, he conquered!
Man I was so young when I heard that song lmao
SUCH A GOOD CHANNEL AND YOU LOVE THE GOD TIER FRANCHISES
I always thought the franchise was partly based on Arthurian legend
Link being a substitute for Arthur
The king/old man being a substitute for Merlin
The master sword being a substitute for Excalibur
Etc
Didn’t expect LOTR
Came as a surprise to me too but makes a lot of sense in the context of the original Hyrule
@@TheMentok fair enough
EVERYTHING is LOTR because it’s real history (it has been suppressed because the Scottish don’t want you to know they’re dwarves)
It's both LotR and Arthur. Keiji Terui was inspired by the battles of medieval Europe (Arthur and the Holy Grail) and the Master Sword was called Excalibur in french localization.
@@TheMentok 6:08: This is just speculation, but while the Peter Pan thing may be true, in terms of Dark Link's origins, Regular Link's Personality, Tunic, and Weaponry, may be inspired by other Fantasy stories as well; such as "Robin Hood", with the titular character specializing in Sword Fights and Archery, fighting to save a kingdom from a corrupt ruler, while having a romance with a beautiful woman, and "the Chronicles of Prydain" with a farmboy named Taran (that shares a similar design as Link in "Disney's the Black Cauldron"), who wields a Magic Sword that's said to be dangerous to those deemed unworthy of it's power.
Zelda 2 is grossly underrated. As a 6 year old I couldn't understand the scope of it and was just mad it wasn't top down. But some years ago I revisited it as an adult and man is it a great game. The difficulty people groan about is drastically reduced if you get the heal spell from I think the 3rd town.
I loved zelda 2 when i was a kid just as much as the first one. When i got stuck in one of them I'd switch to the other one until i got stuck then go back to the first one.
The Zelda 2 redux romhack makes the game so much more enjoyable. It's still hard but it fixes all the little problems that make it tedious. It just shows how great the game could have been if they'd fixed just a few little things. I recommend trying it if you enjoyed the vanilla game.
@@Dug88 I prefer to use the redux hack these days. The changes are small but really nice.
For Zelda 2 you need to learn how to use the leveling system to your advantage.
The Video Game History foundation had a podcast episode about the cartoon. Apparently Nintendo gave them very little restrictions, as everyone was more focused on the Mario cartoon. They based the Zelda / Link relationship on the TV show Moonlighting, which starred Bruce Willis and Cybill Sheperd.
When you're kidnapped by a pig demon then fall in love with a drifter only for that drifter to make-out with your long lost great aunt.
Lol
Through my extensive research, I can say he's name was Link
I am so incredibly hyped for this series
Hope we get a Zelda that revisits the concept of Link traveling to the future.
Hope it stays the Lord of the Rings inspired medieval setting that the first game defined.
@@Luxembourgish Ideally the game would have two maps. a traditional medieval Hyrule and a futuristic Hyrule run by magitech.
The next Legend of Zelda game would be like the premise of Samurai Jack.
@@yoshimasterleader Agree. It always bothered me that the series has games sets centuries between each other, but Hyrule remains medieval with some random tech sprinklet in it. I want a fantasy sci-fi world from times to times too xD
I would love tobsee a victorian hyrule.
Buttface is a true hero to Hyrulians everywhere! 🙌
What happened to the other Zelda in Zelda 2?
Well according to the official Zelda 2 Manga from the 1980s, She died a tragic death while aiding Link on his quest during the events of Zelda 2
Not too many people know of that manga! I seem to recall, didn't Link have a fairy companion in the manga too?
Thankfully the manga isn't canon to the games and realistically after Zelda II, Hyrule has two Zeldas in power and Link who according to the lore that was established regarding the scrolls that Impa gave Link, would be the next candidate to be the next King of Hyrule. Considering Hyrule is in the Era of Decline in both Zelda 1 and Zelda II, it's fitting that Hyrule finally enters its second golden age with two zeldas, a Link who probably became King and the full triforce finally reunited again and governed by Hyrule once more.
@@rtwatkins79Not sure about Zelda II's manga but he did in Link's Awakening manga.
Manga aren't canon tho.
So I imagine Zelda 1 remained as Hyrule's ruler while Zelda 2 went with Link for more adventures and some nice se...
@@Mari_Izu Pretty sure she would've became queen since she's technically the highest in the hierarchy. Should be noted that Link was destined to be king based off what's stated in the lore.
I heard the 1985 Ridley Scott movie Legend was also an influence on the first game, which I assume is where the focus on Zelda, Link and Ganon as the main characters comes from.
In fact it is. The plot and the characters are almost the same... Even in the title itself in part... They are separated by a year apart, so the inspiration in the film is quite plausible.
9:22 When that manual arrived, looking like elements from an unseen anime (making you imagine more of a back story, as well as non-pixel graphics) it was truly a gaming high point of the era! The gold cartridge, it might as well have been made of real gold.
You always upload right when I feel I have nothing interesting to watch atm lol.
It's technically not this video's focus, but I always liked Zelda's firsr design. In a sea of long haired blonde iterations that come later, a brunette with a shorter cut stands out more and more. Plus the old school artstyle stands out of course. A little early Akira Toriyama-esque is the vibe I get when looking at her for some reason.
I might go more into this when I eventually do a Zelda video. It’s interesting how different her pre-LttP designs are. I kinda dig it. Would be nice to see a future Zelda take on this look again at some point
To be honest, botw talks about his existence as if it were a legend In a sense, I think it's because he completely erased Ganon's existence and brought him closer to being a mere grudge. Certainly, the man named Ganondorf repeats reincarnation. It is true that the boar-like incarnation of Ganon was indeed defeated by Link, and that he acted as nothing but a grudge.
In what way? I am interested in this
@@jchud13 I think he may be thinking about the way the game talks about the hero that fought Ganon alongside the Divine Beasts and Guardians 10,000 years before the events of Breath of the Wild.
The music in Adventure of Link slaps harder than most of LoZ music.
I'd still love to see a romantic comedy about Link and the two Princess Zeldas set after the second game.
Why did a 1980's sitcom of the come into my head?

WOOOOO FINALLY MORE BACKGROUND CONTENT TO TURN ON AND LISTEN TO WHILE MY BRAIN ROTS
I love listening during work 😂
I can't listen to this while I'm pooping.
The original Zelda was what got me hooked on games as a 3/4 year old. I used to watch my uncle and cousins playing it absolutely enthralled by the level of freedom and mystery, even taking my silly little kid input into account when burning bushes and the like. When I finally got my own NES when I was 5 I didn't even own a copy but would rent both the first and second games probably every three months, eventually finishing the first game with help from my neighborhood friends. Eventually I did get my own copy, complete in box, from a local rummage sale when I was about 12 or so.
Honestly I didn't even come to appreciate the second game til during the year I took off after high school. I was working at a pizza place with a bunch of friends and the game came up in discussion. I mentioned I wasn't very fond of it and one of the older employees (like 22 instead of 18/19) immediately said I had to fix that. We all went over to the house him and some of the other employees rented together and watched him go through it on original hardware, was even using the old Nintendo Power NES guide for the tricky parts. Ever since I've come to really get a much better idea of what the dev team was going for.
Anyone else notice how much that rapier sword seems in this game? I mean it's featured so prominently yet is TOTALLY absent during the story and game play.
As someone who grew up in that era, yeah, reading the manual on the car ride home was a huge part of the experience.
I’m glad this channel is growing. It’s great content keep it up
"oh no, link! The dragons kidnapped your sweetheart!"
"Don't worry, I got a spare."
And a Tomahawk...
Great work man! I'm not too familiar at all with this franchise and it was great learning about it. I always thought Link was a Elf not a human due to the ears but the references to Peter Pan make sense haha
The magician doesn't just die, it's the same kind of poetic sacrifice that's always in fantasy like Obi-Wan Kenobi's death. This is later merely adapted and elaborated on, when Ganondorf turns into a dragon or a mummy like the Sheikah Monks.
I also think Nintendo really wanted to dot the i's and cross the t's on Triforce with Wind Waker, so it stands to reason Ganondorf is actually also just abandoning his physical body at the end of that game. In TW he really behaves mroe lieka horcrux voldemort and goes on and off all kinds of bodies and possessions, so it's like he's a half-phantom Ganon himself.
Triforce is no ta mystical artifact, but sort of like a prism of power that serves as the crossing point between timelines, set in different dimensions. That's why it appeared when gods LEFT the world, not when they created everything. It's a lot like Adam Warlock's gem and Soul World. But if you REALLY want to see one IP where most of the ideas of Zelda and even some form Devil World for Famicom and Yoshi have been preceded, watch The Flight of Dragons, by Rankin-Bass and TopCraft (studio ghibli)
I'm looking forward to more Zelda from you, that was so interesting !
Definitely more to come!
Awesome work, dude! Keep it up!

Another fun and informative video. Well done!

Good vid man! Keep it up
I think the only games so far that have taken advantage of link being the link to something was a link to the past, between worlds, oracle of ages, and oracle of seasons and if im not mistaken the later 2 used maps from zelda 2. The oracle games also made use of the link cable.
There was another series that incorporated Nintendo characters.
Captain N the Game Master, it also had Princess Zelda and Link in a few episodes of season 2 of Captain N
I forgot they were in it. That show made d bags of all your favorite nes guys.
I was hoping you'd sneak in a "Supa mario brathas' and ahhh 👌 poifect.
Keep up the awesome content too ❤
Awesome video love how you break it down.
Your sense of humor is on point😊
I wonder if the lore from the Japanese version of Zelda 2 is different, because sometimes NOA localization teams went ham and rewrote the story for the North American game manuals. I remember the manual with the convoluted story of the extra sleeping zelda, but other people when they describe the game act like it's the zelda from the first game put to sleep.
Wow, nice use of Smosh clips 😂 fun content 👍🏻
Hey Mentok, real nice video talking about Link. I was wondering, the map you show at 2:34, where is it from? I don't recall that being in the manual of the game or in Zelda 2. If it's official, I'd like to know where it came from because I find it fascinating. Anyhow, thanks for the video.
I feel like people don’t talk about the original games like this enough, safe to say that I am enjoying this video and I will probably end up binge watching half of your channel.
I think Nintendo themselves don’t acknowledge games before A Link to the Past. But seeing the amount of inspiration they took from the first two games to make the series what it is, I had to do a deep dive. Thanks for watching! Hope my content keeps you around 🙏🏽
Link from the TV series is basically Denji from Chainsaw Man 😂 I love it.

I would have liked the vivideo anyway its well made and accurate.
BUT saying DIC right hits the nastalgia a little more than most things.
Dude, I loved this vid. Thoroughly covered the history. And yeah controller throwing during Zelda II is a real thing 😂
Around ten years old, my father had already shown much courage, and wisdom. Sometimes if you take action, you can expose where you have been watching over someone for example of wisdom, so he stays his hand in an instant this is about. His fiance at the time, was in the library with him at school, bullies ran by after someone. He chose to hold, because her position would have been given away, while the other guy would more likely get help otherwise. Likely from the front office.
And as for the courage part, he stood up to even his abusive stepfather, and often trying to watch over his fiance would get mixed up in attempts on her life. Once he had to get a door open, while she was locked inside, inside a ventilation room in the middle of fall. It was very cold out at night, and the bullies had most likely intended to lock her in the room in the cold of night, or even suffocate her along with the individual with her in there.
In the day that happened, he had asked for the first janitor to open, and couldn't remember where it was, he was just a little guy. The first janitor gave up, then he got a chair and tried to bust open the door, finally second janitor comes along and asked if someone was in there. He put the chair down, the janitor opened up the door, and his fiance hugged him close. She must have noticed that he was going to knock in the door, and wanted to thank him...
My father was very protective of his fiance, even through highschool, but then someone separated them. My father is gone now... He died by the hand of my creators, which made me like him in many ways, but I know I'm myself. I was made for the purpose of taking his place. Obviously I won't be doing so.
Ok....
In captain Nintendo Link did get his kiss from Zelda.
If I recall correctly, Captain N, featured the tv series version of Link in sort of a sequel episode or epilogue. And had a rivalry with Captain N.
they showed a waterfall on the title screen of the first game and there was a waterfall, even though we didn't really get to see it at the top of a cliff like in the title screen, we just went up the stairs to where it originates, and the stairs aren't right next to the water fall. and the second games title screen shows a cliff with a sword in it, i don't think there is a scene in the game like that.
Man, I was about 6 when the first game came out. My friend’s older brother had the game. We tried playing and we were so lost, we went back to Mario and straightforward games. lol I didn’t get into Legend of Zelda until I was slightly older when A Link to the Past came out. I also used to like the cartoon. On Friday, they’d show Zelda in place of the Mario cartoon, and I would rush home from school to watch it. All week, they would promote it and show clips with Mario and Luigi (Captain Lou and Danny Wells) doing so during the live action portion.
Oh, something else about difficulty…a lot of game developers were programming the games like you would for an arcade title. Arcade games ate your quarters. lol Seems they still had that mindset since that was the norm.
It's cool that the Manual was meant to be an integral part of the experience even though most people don't really think about it nowadays
Yeah, I see a lot of reviewers complaining how about the game is too cryptic while saying stuff like "how would I know to do this thing?" and the thing in question is in the manual lol
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I was 12 when LOZ came out and it was the first game that I was addicted to. Zelda II was a bit of a let down, not a bad game but not the sequel we hoped for. And the cartoon was dope. Can’t believe it got cancelled so quickly.

Now knowing that the fabled Zelda from Zelda II was NOT the same Zelda as in the original, it makes that ending all the more strange. Especially since she ends up kissing Link, who is supposedly the sweetheart of the Zelda from the original. Putting aside Link probably cheating on the original Zelda, if they didn't break up offscreen, of course, there's two issues with this when the manual's story is considered.
1. Yes, Link did save Zelda from eternal slumber, but from her perspective, this is a random guy who just showed up to save her. She would have had no idea that he was ever there, when Impa shows Link her resting body. And unless that was some part of the wizard's plan, something they did to bewitch Zelda into falling in love with her savior, you'd think she would have no reason to want to smooch some random guy, even if he is attractive.
2. Again, this Zelda was from long ago. Perchance, she may have had a lover of her own, before she was put into eternal slumber. And that spell? There is only one explanation as to how the spell worked: Suspended animation, or in other words, having that sleep be equivalent to her being frozen. Without that, she would have ended up aging to death, and there would be no Zelda to save once Link came around.
Something tells me that the original intention was for this Zelda to be the original Zelda, and not the Zelda from the legend itself. Would have made more sense for the Zelda that was already Link's partner to kiss him, and not a Zelda he hardly knew.
Yes, that is likely it when taking only the real world game releases, not the Nintendo-approved Hyrule Historia that attracts fan theorists. Back when the game series was new and the foundation was not really set until Link to the Past / Ocarina of Time, the game is considered the direct sequel and the characters have aged. Also the instruction manual was not consistent in story background with the in game text since they are likely made independently.
@@JohnshiBRPG Really makes you wonder what the English instruction booklet authors were thinking
2 actually resolves itself if the soul of the hero is involved. She could have already been in love with the Link of her era
another alternative is that she's been aware the whole time, as many coma survivors are said to be. She could have been fully aware of Link's efforts to rescue her, traveling the whole of the world and stopping in to visit between palaces
Uniting the triforce together grants a person a wish though, which link could have used to force Zelda to love him upon awakening.
@@katiepersons6575 Well, that's even more messed up
RE Links design: It's amazing how inspirational Disney used to be, and now they're...not. At all. Ever.
so link in zelda 2 completed the full triforce and imbued the real royal zelda with a wish, canonizing themselves across the multiverse in infinite timelines.
i wonder what similar event and magical artifact (or just magic) canonized mario and peach? peach and zelda both seem to be basically demigods being pursued by an evil demigod that gets saved by a randomly chosen human who becomes empowered with "courage".
I'm still scratching my head at how TotK and Zelda 2 has similar themes
The first time I played LoZ Twilight Princess. For some reason, I thought when I named Link Minda. I would go through the game playing as Minda instead of Link. 🤦🏾♀️
I’m really looking forward to your videos on this series. Can’t wait for my baby Ganondorf
Oof
Well you did played as Minda, as you named the character as such xD
Guess I gotta be that weird old guy in the room... I remember when the Zelda cartoon originally aired and I actually liked it.
You good sir… deserve a sub and a like.
While in retrospect Zelda 2 seems out of place, in the late 80s many other action adventure games copied its formula. It was hugely influential. It was also a really popular and well reviewed game. No one called it a "black sheep" until years later
Agree, at the time I don't remember people talking bad about the game. It was after the 2000s that some magazines and people on the internet started to talk bad about Zelda 2 and a lot of people (a good chunk of them didn't even played) got gaslighted into thinking the game sucked.
2:35 - the north half of that map is the Legend of Zelda 2 map. Nice.
@19:45 That episode has always given me a Peter Pan vibe, 😉😁
Link had a Bible (Japanese version’s Magic Book) and a shield with a cross on it in the original LoZ, let that sink in for a second.
I know most of this, but I'm enjoying your video
Does any one know where to find this image of the hyrule map at 2:35 ??
Man, i remember running home after school on Fridays just to watch the Zelda segments. Nintendo really did rule the world😂
Anybody name Link “Zelda” and accidentally start with the second quest
Dude you’ve awesome!
I think the next game should be open world with the original art style 3d rendered.
Where did you get that shirt? ❤️
Link is Link. He's a courageous young lad. Who else would he be? 😁
What about Zelda and Link from season 2 of "Captain N:The Game Master". There are three episodes in that series....
Great video, love the original Zelda games
HE DID get a kiss. It just didn't happen in the Zelda series run. It happens in Captain N the Game Master.
I remember seeing it happen one Saturday morning. It was an event.
What episode. He almost got on in a show but Ganon cock blocked him.
@Ieatpaste23 Its the episode where Zelda calls the Palace of Power. Link is a hero to Kevin so he shows off a bit but Kevin helps out, earning a kiss from Zelda BEFORE Link does. It's not until later in the episode and its only a cheek kiss but she DOES kiss him.
@LeoSmashRoyale I ended up watching it after I saw your post. I can see why Link was jealous. As a kid I thought he was being stupid as an adult I thought, "Zelda, you must really have no respect for Link."
@Ieatpaste23 I feel like this Zelda is a tsundere before Tsunderes were even a thing xD when it came to kissing Kevin, I'm sure it was just a thank you as she knows Kevin and Lana were an item. It's even stated in the Zelda cartoon that she IS in love with Link but is very stubborn. I kinda wish we could have another shot at some form of an animated series, but i think Nintendo is gonna stick with movies for now.
Subbed. It's hard to find a youtuber that's not an obnoxiously annoying tryhard. Keep up the great work!
Ganondorf doesn’t have the Triforce of Power in Tears of the Kingdom - he goes after a Secret Stone instead.
the manual drawings of link show him as small elf boy, but in the first game , he is short and squat, so if they make a live action movie of that game, maybe they should use a little person, like the actor who plays Willow
Peter Dinklage would throw a fit about little people portraying little people, he's been doing that lately
Yes. The very original Link design is more related to a "gnome" than an "elf" as he is small and a bit chubby.
@@ChibiKami i think he's more upset that little people dont get cast for anything other than to portray little people. they dont have the same opportunities average height people do
He's short and squat because he's a little kid lol

I figured out the silver arrow thing when I was seven. We didn't really require much hand holding in our games back then. 🤔🤔
