There is a new Zelda game on the horizon, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. And with a new game in the franchise, comes questions of where it's going to fit within the official Zelda timeline. Something that is beyond the scope of this video admittedly, but to help all of you Nintendo fans out there with your theorizing, how about we take a look at the timeline as we know it today, shall we?
In case you aren’t aware, the Zelda timeline is far from simple. While most franchise timelines are a basic, straight line, the Zelda one actually splits at one point, creating 3 separate yet equally relevant timelines. The few games that don’t seem to fit on any part of the timeline, are the games that belong to the “Era of Calamity” as the fans have taken to calling them. That would be both of the Hyrule Warriors games, Breath of the Wild, and the forthcoming Tears of the Kingdom.
A common theory amongst fans is that these games exist at the very end of all three timelines, seemingly being some kind of convergence point between them, bringing things back into one linear timeline. The main evidence for this, is the fact that these games seem to share similar traits with all of them, with things such as specific references to races that only existed in one timeline, and things like that. However, until Nintendo gives us an explicit answer, it's hard to say for sure. And so far, they aren’t telling…All we can say for sure, is they definitely fit at the end of the chronology.

Are you excited for 'The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom'? 🪄
Kinda. Supporting in hopes we get oracle remakes in the vein of the link's awakening ones
@@thecunninlynguistI'd love that. I feel the Oracle games dont get enough love.
@@SireRosethey don't! I kinda have hopes we'll at least get the gbc games soon cause we did get minish cap and it was around the same time
Nah I'm waiting for 'The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Children'
@@spaghettios2894should be soon cause of that $70 price tag
As a first time Zelda player (started like 3 weeks ago) let me just say that this video was EXTREMELY HELPFUL! Thanks so much my dude 👍🏻
Heyy I watch ur videos! Fancy seeing you here
Wait you’ve never played Zelda until now?!? Breath of the wild has been out for 6 years 😂 bro where ya been?
@@lnlsmsh7183 who cares? Everyone’s gotta start somewhere
@@lnlsmsh7183 your point?! If anything I’m kind of jealous. Wish I could relive my first botw experience 😢
Welcome to the club, I was born in the 90's so got to experience the game in all of its wonder and awe, was such a great time as all the games came out of the years!
not to be that guy, but Ganondorf in twilight princess was not a reincarnation but the same Ganondorf in OOT, he was banished after child Link and Zelda exposed his plans in the child timeline...
exactly, same thing with the one in WW. hes just the Ganondorf that came back after Link was sent back to the past by Zelda and honestly, i think it might be the most interesting Dorf to date. the dude was just trying to bring Hyrule back to its glory in a sense, not tryna run the world or anything.
They already said BotW takes places thousands if not 100s of thousand years after events of the previous timelines. And yes a convergence of sorts occurred.
Very well put together and great presentation. Nice work. Thanks for sharing.
The thing with there being two Links in Twilight Princess, that entire exchange between the two happened in Link's mind. It was his memories of a previous life awakening within him.
Nintendo confirmed Link in Twilight Princess is a direct descendant of the Link in Ocarina of Time/Majora’s Mask. Possibly the only time two Links being related to each other has been confirmed.
Ganondorf in Twilight Princess, is the same Ganondorf from Ocarina of time, he was not reincarnated; if I'm not mistaken
Came to the comments for this. It's the OG Ganondorf from the Child Timeline.
My theory BOTW and TOTK. Are the end that loops into the beginning. Causing it to never end.
Why is there a question of where TotK will fall in the timeline at the start? It's clearly set up to be a direct sequel to BotW. Same Link as last time.
The hero of time is actually also the hero of Twilights great grandfather or great great grandfather.
I heard link from Windwaker is not a direct reincarnation of the past links.
Flatlife on CZcams has an amazing video explaining all of the timelines in and chronology of the entire Legend of Zelda/Link series.
Can't wait for that game
Probably the Legend of Zelda games weren't intended to be timelines.
The Ganondorf underneath Hyrule castle in the tears of the kingdom trailer has restrains on his wrists, gold gerudo jewelry, long hair, and what seems to be a wound in his chest. If that’s correct he is the same ganondorf as twilight Princess
That Dorf is dead. In TOTK’s reveal trailer, a shadow that gets cast on the cave wall reveals that Ganondorf was very much alive as the green hand grabbed him. Plus canonically a new Ganondorf was born after Twilight Princess.
@@yang6642 honestly it would make more sense if FSA happened in the timeline where the hero fails. i prefer the idea that the Ganondorf from OoT has always been the one present in each game from the past and future timelines, given we only really get one real game where he shows up in each of these 2 timelines (not counting FSA in it cuz of what i said at the beginning of this comment)
I seriously like Link in his Green Tunic better.
theres a few inaccuracies. Twilight Princess ganondorf is the same dude as in Ocarina of Time, not a reincarnation.
Have never played a Zelda game
But still liked the video 👍
10:04 What is that Ganondorf scene from?
It’s a mod. It’s the Maz Koshia fight from BOTW.
I... I don't think anyone is questioning where this new game goes into the timeline... it's directly after BotW lol
Did I miss him mentioning Twilight Princess? I know it is after OOT. I must have blinked and missed it or was it not there?
6:52
You forgot to mention the part about how Demise cursed the Goddess's Chosen Hero to repeatedly fight a reincarnation of himself for eternity. Hence explaining how Ganondorf keeps coming back.
Yesss
Totk, botw and aoc is pretty much after skyward since when zelda went back in time she helped seal gonondorf for 10k years so it reseted all other timelines but its weird cause it talks about majoras timeline and the hero of time
Eiji Aonuma confirmed before Breath of the Wild released that it takes place thousands of years after Ocarina of Time, Age of Calamity is a non canon spin-off, and Tears of the Kingdom takes place after Breath of the Wild, with its past events still taking place after the other games since the BOTW/TOTK Hyrule is a different one
😂😂😂 good luck explaining this
ufff link is cute
The Zelda games are so good, especially Ocarina of Time and Link's Awakening
Lttp and oracle games are my faves
Tears of the kingdom is a sequel to botw and also sort of a prequel to skyward sword like it’s both but botw is obviously after ocarina of time and a unknown game so is kinda confusing
TOTK isn’t a prequel to Skyward Sword in any way
hey man why didnt you even say a word about the events of link to the past, but explained what links awakening is about, which is completely irrelevant to the timeline?
man that explanation at the beginning is so wrong. the link in Skyward Sword is the first link ever and although Zelda is the reincarnation of Hylia in this game already, its not only until Link defeats Demise that he curses all of them to be reincarnated and to be in this cycle of battle.
Also, Ganondorf in TP is the same Ganondorf from OoT, is not another reincarnation. same thing with the one in WW, Ganondorf has never reincarnated again, in fact the Gerudos stopped having males every 100yrs in their tribe cuz Ganondorf was the last one to be born.
Canonically there has been a second Ganondorf that was born after the original met his end in Twilight Princess. This new Dorf became the Ganon that is fought in Four Swords Adventures.
@@yang6642 are u sure he wasnt simply resurrected in that game by Vaati or something? im not really sure cuz i havent played that one but i think its just Ganon that shows up in that game and not really Dorf so its likely that its just resurrected like the twin robas
@@horacionivar2869 Its confirmed in FSA that the Ganon in that game was once Ganondorf, he became the beast Ganon after stealing a magic trident from a pyramid. It’s also revealed that Ganon was pulling the strings behind Vaati the whole time in that game.
