- Are you ready for your lesson in Geekdom 101? On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson sits down with actress Olivia Munn, known for her roles in The Predator, X-Men: Apocalypse, The Newsroom, and more, to discuss the role she’s been playing all her life: a geek. Joined in-studio by comic co-host Chuck Nice and astrophysicist and StarTalk geek-in-chief Charles Liu, PhD, Neil and the Chucks are ready to explore Olivia’s geek cred and the geekiverse as a whole.
What is a geek? What’s the difference between a geek and a nerd? Can you be a geek of just one thing? Like a theatre geek, a comic book geek, a sports geek? Olivia tells us why she thinks “geekdom” means freedom. We discuss why comic books are such a staple in geek culture. Charles also tells us why he thinks biohacking is the next great geek frontier.
You’ll learn about Olivia’s upbringing and how her early struggles in algebra shaped her work ethic today. We explore her role as Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse. Find out what superpower Olivia would give herself if she could choose. You’ll hear why Neil’s superhero alter ego would be “Java Man." We investigate the power of science to bring superpowers to the real world: the Iron Man suit, genetic mutation, immortality, and more. Discover more about the relationship between science and magic. We also grapple with the idea that “if everyone is special, no one is special.”
To finish off the episode, Olivia brings a couple Cosmic Queries she has for Neil. We ponder the existence of aliens. Neil explains why he has no reason to doubt that we are not alone in the universe. We ask: wouldn’t it be calming to know we’re not alone? Or, would it be frightening? Then we ask - are we alone in our intelligence? Lastly, Olivia checks in with Neil to see if the planets can impact humans individually. All that, plus, Neil and Charles reveal how much humanity actually “knows” about the universe.

At first he irritated me by jumping in constantly trying to be funny. But then I realized that is EXACTLY what Neil has him there for. This is why NDT is the preeminent science communicator and I am not.
Been eagerly awaiting Geekdom 101 to do a Q&A with Star Talk. Finally we'll know the truth behind the physics of Beerus' hakai energy and whether or not he's stronger than UI Goku who's rumored multidimensional in scope.
Olivia will always be the hostess of Attack of the Show to me. I knew her when she was basically a "nobody" before she became a Hollywood actress.

so much better than what they're doing now at g4tv... olivia munn was a class act. still is, as far as im concerned. they downgraded from geek goddess to vitriolic political panderer. attractiveness is more than outward appearance, frosk. funny that anyone would choose to ignore that. does that say more about frosk, or the people she screeches at, while assuming they will stay around and be screeched at, or looked down upon?
Facts
I have been afraid my whole life to learn about physics, biology and astronomy. Start all has help me fall back in love with Science
I’m a high school drop out and spent years running around in the streets until I joined the Navy in 08. I just got my bachelors in Computer Science last year and it’s all because of Neil and StarTalk.
Every Startalk with Charles Liu I re-learn how much of a legend he is.

The issue is everyone want you to be part of thier collective. Individual thinking or any type of questioning is seen as this great evil.
It's happening to science too. Everyone is always trying too absorb it, to fit their goals/wants.
We have gotten to a point, where everyone takes what they want from it and discards the rest.
I love the Charles episodes.

Great episode and interview. Lots of insights triggered many ideas. But I will address only one. We are creatures whose goal is survival both as prey and predators. We recognize the need to depend on the discoveries and observable truths from others like us for survival. Science is now taking us into realms that on the surface have seemingly little or no application to our survival. But as I think of it as we begin to explore the universe we will need all the data we can gather to survive out there. Our thirst for knowledge and exploration is intertwined with that quest for survival. The threat of extinction or death throughout the universe is a consequence no other species shares with us.
This is how talks go...let guests blow away what they are thinking....Chuck thank you for finding Neil or him finding you or finding each other...

Natalie Portman is a geek too, she went to MIT! I was a geek/athlete in high school. Now, I'm an electronics engineer now doing robotics. Love Nathalie, and Olivia. Wish you would have included Natalie in your geekdom talk. She's astounding and super smart. Olivia Munn and Natalie Portman are stunning and brilliant minded. WOW! Acting is just easy to them.
