I love when a fast talking pseudo-intellectual thinks that a slower, measured response is a sign of confusion or hesitation in their opponent. Here, Olivia was making an interesting but nuanced point that stood up to Morgan's flimsy rebuttal. She never lost her focus and not only made a beautiful critique of celebrity "journalism" but also embarrassed Piers simultaneously. So impressive!
@Domagoj Čović wtf
But he wasnt attacking her or anything, he was just inteviewing her...
@@ferez1985 he did get very defensive very quickly. Olivia was talking in general terms and Piers was answering like she was talking specifically about him
@@shyyou93 that's not what I meant, that was actually an OK interview on both sides, the comment by John makes it sound like there was some kind of confrontational situation, but there wasn't.
@@shyyou93 I think that Morgan is generally a jackass, but in this case I don't think he was particularly defensive nor did he attack her. And she was very much talking about him - not JUST him, but him and other "journalists" like him.
A very valid point from a very professional journalist.
...and for some reason Piers Morgan was also there.
"Journalism is about other people's stories." It took her awhile to get to that because it was an honest response. What an answer!
What if it's a celebrity's story?
Olivia Munn seems to be hitting Piers Morgan's nerves that he had to cut her off while she's still trying to formulate her thoughts and trying to answer his question.
My respect for Olivia Munn has risen so much since I saw the Paley Center clips of her. She's clever, has a clear opinion and has a witty way to formulate it.
Wow, that’s so sweet. Drop your email address I will email you.
@@oliviamunn6328 Oh if only this was real, but somehow, I have a hard time believing that my celebrity crush for 6+ years is really responding to old CZcams comments.
@@RobMost that's so sweet. Drop your email address. I will email you.
Olivia has more journalistic integrity than anyone on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, etc ever will.
@ Max Hyde I loved the character Sloan and perhaps youre correct and she's (Munn) loaded w/ intellect and integrity. But be careful not to conflate a thespian w/ a character they play
@@frankdracman4084 That's certainly a good admonishment. However, the question then becomes whether what is being said is true or not; this, of course, requires critical thinking. It's funny how often a celebrity may be criticized for expressing a thought that is political, scientific, or otherwise BECAUSE they are a celebrity, not based upon the merit of the expression. Again, it goes back to "where is the lie" or "can it be verified?"
False equivalence is the lowest form of stupid.
So, my summary of all of this: Olivia Munn answers Piers Morgan's questions of "What is your definition of journalism, and what problems do you see with modern journalism?" with "Everything that you're not, and everything that you are". This felt like a live version of Sloan's take-down of the ACN celebrity stalker app kid, only the kid was at least intelligent enough to get that she was attacking him.
Olivia Munn came out the victor here and Piers looked uncomfortable. She made some great points about the media and it looked like Piers didn't know what to say, so he just changed the topic.
It felt like he was trying to stump her with his questions, and when she kept coming up with great responses he backed off because he knows he's coming off as one of those shitty "journalists."
Piers is the ARCHETYPE of the “I’m the story” journalist she described!
He's the host here. It's his job to ask interesting questions and change the subject.
@@engrey It seems like she was put on the spot by those questions. She wasn't prepared but gave great responses nonetheless. Also, if raising your voice and/or interrupting responses and asking compound questions is the definition of winning a debate rather than providing counterpoints and counterarguments to another person's argument, then sure, Piers Morgan wins that. But then, what would be the point of the debate.
Wow, that’s so sweet Karategal.
Having Pierce Morgan host the Newsroom panel is like having The head of the KKK host the Roots panel.
I know, right? What really gets me is that the show actually deals with the Phone Hacking Scandal, which Piers Morgan both knew about and profited from, and yet he's got the gall to sit there and act like he's a legitimate journalist.
The joke is on Piers here, because Jeff Daniels just looks right through him with that shit eating grin and the smarmy inference that sharing an opinion is the same thing as making yourself part of the story. Daniels doesn’t even bother to answer. That should tell you what he things of Morgan.
That’s a slightly more harsh indictment than Will McAvoy calling the Tea Party the American Taliban. Then again, I don’t watch Piers Morgan.
Exactly. Like seriously, this guy?!
More like a flat earther interviewing a panel of physicists
Basically she's right...
Basically?? Hit the nail on the head.
Piers is so chauvinistic that I'm sure he expected this would turn into some kind of flirtation but she really slaps him silly and makes him look like a fool.
+M22 No he's not, its coz you dont understand how adults speak in these debates.
@@VCYT you mean: like condescending twat waffles?
@@tvtitlechampion3238 yes that's USA TV all day. An that's why you folks like piers to ask tougher questions than soft queries.
@@VCYT Keep projecting your linguistic failings onto others.
And he even tries to involve Jeff Daniels to back him up, and Daniels just looks at him and looks away like: “you asked for it.”
Her point is very valid for current times. A lot of important events going on in the world, yet are over shadowed by "gossip" stories. And Piers as always did not even acknowledge her point, nor did anyone else.
Even more so today.
jeff hough Even more so today!
Olivia is adorable and appears very authentic. Probably very fun to talk to over a beer.
I don't understand the dislike for her at all.
Jealousy.
A woman who's vocal about her opinions always gets hate
That’s so sweet, drop your email address. I will email you.
Stupid women hate hot chicks. Stupid men hate smart women. Most people are stupid. Do the math.
I appreciate the fact that everyone on the stage allows Munn to embarrass Morgan, and feel no need to step in and mansplain anything. It shows they have a lot of respect for her.
Yes!
I'd like to see Emily Mortimer try to "mansplain" things...
I'm guessing Jeff Daniels was having to bite his tongue.
Never, in a million years, would I have chosen Piers Morgan for an interview of the Newsroom panel. It's quite funny how Olivia Munn (bless her and her fantastic response to Morgan's dimwitted question about the difference between an anchor having an opinion and an anchor making him or herself the story) talks about so-called "journalists" being self-absorbed and wanting to make themselves the story, and the very next thing out of Morgan's mouth is, "Well, fortunately, you'll never get me doing that."
Pretty sure it was meant to be sarcastic even though he's 100% that guy. lol
Gotta admit, she did pretty well in the hot seat.
She was pretty hot in that well seat.
Piers Morgan I find offensive on a cellular level. A douche of the first order.
Olivia Munn on the other hand..... brains, talent, beauty, and a good sense of humor.
What's not to like.
Olivia Munn did a tremendous job with her "Sloane" portrayal on "The Newsroom"; is a woman of
some depth of intellect, I
tend to believe; however, based on at least this one
event, was utterly unintelligible, her thought sequence seemingly scattered around like birdseed.
That horse's ass, Morgan,
did everything he could to
make the proceeding more
difficult, granted, but Olivia
didn't acquit herself well
at all here.
Why do you find Piers 'offensive on a cellular level'?
arebrec - meaning; i find him to be such an abhorent human being, that the mere knowledge that he is spinning through the cosmos on the same blue marble as i, makes me so sick as to affect me on a profoundly minute level.
xtop23 physical beauty maybe, brains and talent no way!
xtop23 what nonsense Piers Morgan is an extremely successful tv presenter as well as having been a successful newspaper editor at multiple publications as well as columnist. You are a fucking moron.
Piers Morgan ruined this whole thing.
he did. (he always does. it's a truism by now.)
The world would be a better place without Piers Morgan
Wow. She was very good in this segment. Always really liked her but now I love her.
I don't always like her, but man she was on-point. News isn't entertainment and Piers came off as essentially an egotistical idiot willfully missing her points.
She hot AF.
Why not? Just curious
Yet all news is entertainment today. Not one outlet does not push sensationalism .
@RecklessFables Piers *is* essentially an egotistical idiot.
cheers.
@@r13hd22 which is the problem
She nailed it!
Good job making shit awkward, Piers.
Couldn't they have chosen a journalist to host the conversation? Smh
Lol, I believe you would have done it better.
Strangely no mention from Piers of him being sacked from the Mirror for printing fake photos.
Olivia Munn has everything. Brains and Looks. What an amazing cast.
I like Olivia Munn. I’ve been following her since she started on Attack of The Show. She has some good opinions. I miss Walter Cronkite too.
Wow! I'm amazed by her intellect! That makes her one of my favorite actresses now! I also agree with her comments about lemon and CNN.... that's why I just stoped watching most news outlets, they are quite annoying trying to one up the other!
Piers is always condescending as though his thoughts and views are always right. He was never open to the idea that maybe he was wrong. Even with issues that I agree with, his line of questioning didn't offer the chance for his guests to be completely honest, but rather put their guests in a confrontational state of mind which may make for good TV fodder, but you never learn anything new nor allows anyone to open their minds.
Thats the overall problem with most TV anchors nowadays.. on both sides
@@josephmorales652 No, just on your side.
Grate Todd. Let’s talk better drop your email address I will email you.
Piers is alwYs right...? Okay.. you can go smoke more crack now.
This is so ironic for Piers Morgan considering what's happened to him when Megan Markle dumped him for Prince Harry
He made himself the story..
Wow, you speak so great Dan. Drop your email address will email you.
Major hit on Don Lemon. We need more Olivia in our lives
I don't actually mind Piers here. He's bouncing back with further questions to create a debate. If he just sat there and said yes and just moved onto a new point there wouldn't be the insightful discussion we see here - nor would we get to witness Olivia's sharp intelligence. And I liked the little joke he made about himself at the end. I think people are too quick to hate here.
Olivia Munn is amazing
Wow, thanks Amanda. You so sweet.
"fortunately, you'd never catch me doing that"
wow this aged horrifically for piers
Hahaha it's great aye. This is so ironic for Piers Morgan considering what's happened to him.
I had a feature writing instructor at the Indiana School of Journalism who had a daily column in the Indianapolis Star. His column was often picked up by the syndicates. He told us, "Never write about you. You are not that interesting. You can always find someone more interesting to write about." That's exactly why Olivia Munn is saying here. Unfortunately, most of today's journalists never got or heeded that advice. I've always valued it.
He does make good points today. It's just that he is very argumentative for the wrong reasons. He was hosting this to ask each actor what he/she thinks about the show. He was not there to be in debate as if he wants to change the world. Dude pick your battles. Not to mention Olivia Munn schooled him in seconds.
Damn, she makes nerds look goooooooooooood
She's so cool and attractive sometimes I forget how smart and wise she is.
Emily Mortimer's face during most of that said it all.
Who knew this girl, who was constantly just shaking her ass on a games show, could act as amazingly as she does on The Newsroom.
As Matthew McConaughey proves, there is true hidden talent in many actors/actresses.
+Hitmanfan91 Matthew McConaughey?
Watch his films from 2010 onwards...
Hitmanfan91 I still don't understand.
Are you saying these are from when he does his best acting?
Up until then he was only acting in rom coms and no one though anything of his acting ability. Then he changed to more serious roles and everyone now realises hes actually pretty good.
Hitmanfan91 I always thought he was a good actor, so I'm not surprised.
Olivia is really brilliant!
Just remember, this is the same woman who jumped into a wading pool full of pie filling in a French maid outfit for a paycheck.
Jewels Star Name ONE other actress who jumped into a wading pool full of pie filling for a paycheck.
Bette Davis
jello that's rather a stretch.I don't think it takes special brilliance to distinguish between reportage and grandstanding.BTW she craves attention enough to join an insignificant panel of corpses. She should act and shut up.I don't think it takes special brilliance to see that she's capable of going in the other direction-using celebrity as a way into serious commentary.Exactly what's disgusting about Clooney raising money for HRC.You're welcome.
I don't think the Clooney thing is what she is getting at. He asked her what she thinks journalism is and she answered in a coherent manner. Diminishing her opinion (she did graduate with a degree in journalism) based on something she did as an actress is asinine.
pretty sharp head on her shoulders.
+Mac Morris Shes stating things that are very naïve and wish worthy .Basically its couch criticism/activism. But she sounds like genius ... when paired with Piers :P
+jabber wolf OH...you think that huh.
She's a cool gal. Olivia is not great at articulating during interviews, but everything she said was very perceptive. She's getting better, though. Pierce Morgan was kind of condescending and evasive. See how quick he tried to evade what she pointed out?
@@jabberwolf7348 You are the naive one.
Incredibly sincere and insightful.
Olivia Munn is a class act.
it amazes me how the very topic of this conversation has ballooned in just the few years since. we're living in a time when the focus has shifted so far away from legitimate journalism and people are using twitter with their morning coffee instead of an actual newspaper.
Oh, person of four years ago, you can’t even imagine…
My respect for her just tripled. Piers Morgan is exactly who and what she's talking about, and he needs an education in critical thinking skills.
Olivia Munn could have been a great journalist. But, as she is a great actress, her impact on the world might even be bigger now.
Olivia Munn is gorgeous and a wonderful actress.
Very well spoken!
Seems her time at the daily show has served her well. Great answer
I love Olivia Munn. I wish she were the White House press secretary.
is there a link to the whole panel?
pierce morgan is the definition of what olivia was talking about..... how ironic that he would ask that question and than move on so quickly...
Damn RIGHT Olivia!! Hear Hear!
What the shit is Piers doing here
+Mr. Hadrov - its coz he's a newsman of 30 years - the rest are just actors.
Trying to stay relevant.
I'd assume that since this is a panel for a show about a newsroom, they'd get a presenter with some experience in the area.
That being said, fuck Piers Morgan and everything he stands for.
@@VCYT newsman.....ahahaha hahaha.....the debate sailed way over you head
@@olyokie , he has more experience than you an other plebs.
Why would you get Piers Morgan to host a The Newsroom Panel?
Olivia is fucking awesome.
I appreciate her comments about CNN b/c it has been turning into a less credible news organization over the past several years. Its still better than most but I used to hold them to a high regard. I miss 'The Newsroom' and too bad news stations aren't more like that in real life.
Very well said and it's nice to see someone out pierce in his place 😅
Olivia nailed it... She obviously didn't expect to be put under the gun, but she handled it great! She looked hot while doing it...
Olivia's closing opinion could not be better directed at Piers. Watch his turn as Good Morning Britain's anchor. He's turned a morning news programme into a two and a half hour programme of his own opinions and tears down anyone who is on the opposing side.
Оливия потрясающая! Olivia is astonishing!
she's right
Wish Journalists would take this to heart..
I miss when CNN was a 24 hour news channel. In the early 90s, I was stationed in Germany, we all became 'addicted' to Headline News.
She nailed it.
Olivia munn is so much smarter than Morgan it isn't funny
+Steve Huber -she isn't, as she just an actress, whereas he's heard it all before. i'm he doesn't fall asleep from hearing her 'old news'.
But she is a journalist. Graduated college with said degree THEN became an actress. Know you shit before running your mouth.
@@VCYT She is more of a journalist than Morgan. It's like you didn't even watch.
Love her.
It's simple, news is now an entertainment industry. Ratings to get sponsors & money. I remember a long time ago, hearing the phrase "Believe half of what you see, & less of what you hear". Unfortunately, that seems to be the case in the news industry now. I'm 64 but, I remember. I remember that journalists like Walter Cronkite and Frank Reynolds could be depended upon to deliver ungarnished facts. Now I am afraid that the youth in our country accept the news reports as verbatim truth. That troubles me.
"news is now an entertainment industry"
That isn't new. That's how News started out. The News started as a way to sell paper at an up-charge.
@@mickeye6428 - Compare the TV news to what it was in the 60's, 70's & 80's to what it is now. The change has been immense.
Olivia Munn was impressive agreed with her point of view
Thanks for your unconditional love and support. Where are you watching from?
I live near Baltimore, MD. It's not as bad as advertised- lol. If you are in the area (includes DC) we can do some world class seafood.
Objective is the word
Olivia is stunning!
Damn after watching old g4 clips this just made like her even more. Olivia is awesome.
Olivia Nunn at her best.
People underestimate her at their peril.
Best thing about Jeremy Clarkson is that he punched Piers Morgan in the face.
Wasn't she in New Girl???
Debates? More like schools him.
A shallow journalist asks a trick question to an actor playing a journalist, expecting she can not answer.
And she floors him!
"We can just move on", he deflects.
Yeah you move on Pierce. Where are you now?
of all the people, why piers morgan for the newsroom? WHY PALEY CENTER?
Perfect Jeff Daniels is sleeping !!
I would!
1:00 he knows that for a fact because that is clearly his own story. A confession.
Agreed, Alistair. There are moments when I find Piers deplorable, but many other moments when I see him doing something incredibly valuable. This was the latter and not the former. He's playing the devil's advocate here to spark insightful commentary regarding an issue that many don't fully comprehend. He's also sort of throwing himself under the bus in the process. He knows that he's partly guilty of many of the issues Munn & company have with post-modern journalism. Yet he willing prods Munn to speak her mind. I suspect, underneath it all, he may totally agree with her. I wouldn't be surprised if he earnestly desires to be a true news man, but the state of the current media will not allow him to do that and be as successful as he is. That last bit is some educated speculation, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if Morgan loathes all of the celebuante bullshit he must wade through to get better ratings.
suggested video, when this one ends - "Vogue asks Olivia Munn 73 inane rapid fire questions" over 7 and a half minutes
Why have I never heard of Olivia Munn until now?
Difference between Journalism and Editorials.
Ask her a question, then cut her off just before she's finished answering. Great journalism
Sloane still hitting it out of the park
She is exactly describing morgan himself..
It is the difference between objective journalism and editorializing.
Jeff Daniel's and his cast of superbly talented (and informed charmers) kicking Piers Morgan to the curb. Olivia Munn hits the bullseye when she says today's newsmen are nothing more than egomaniacal self obsessed show ponies. Or something like that. When did newsmen stop being newsmen? It's a show now. Not reporting. What makes Will McAvoy and The Newsroom so great is they cut to the chase. Being informative and entertaining are not mutually exclusive. Without credibility an audience will lose respect and ultimately turn on you. Jeff Daniel's McAvoy is the nearest thing we will ever see to Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite in today's world. Honest, insightful, informed and yes, entertaining. Start with the truth, make people want to relate to you. Then they will identify with you and believe in what really matters.
He just can't shut up. For Piers, the best thing in the world is the sound of his own voice.
Journalists are in a small quantity. Walter Cronkite was a real journalist. There have been few after him. I totally agree with Olivia.
This wasn't a debate really
Nice :-)
To answer her question: Everyone in the news industry wants to be famous, rich and remembered forever. Her own movie/tv industry everyone wants to be famous, rich and remembered forever. People that get into either industry want to be successful, recognized for their efforts and dedication, earn accolades and awards, also be paid a lot of money. The problem is that everything in their particular fields is influenced by ego and the possibility of becoming successful which can turn out to be a big pay off. Unfortunately now the news networks and the TV industry have to compete harshly with CZcams and other new forms of entertainment to remain relevant, that alone drives the madness and the desire to do new, different or outrages things in order to stand out. Anything that draws attention and makes them popular. It's about what you do and how people react, do they embrace or reject you.
Olivia Munn has not had very good roles since her stint on the Newsroom, Such a shame. Very talented actress.
1:48 (Piers Morgan) I work for a company that has a very trivial arms to it to that helps finance the more serious arms to it.
Shit this is sad to read but probably very true.
That the gossip/entertainment TV shows are actually funding the hard journalism shows what we care about and it seems so shallow.
Celebrity is what others make you. I saw both points.
psylocke seems like a cool chick in real life good to know
Ha ha ha, when people underestimate Olivia Munn.
It’s driving me insane how Olivia is cut off every second. Jeez let the sentence end first
