Doctor Who Classic - The Matrix Editions - Season 9 (with new VFX)

  • Season 9 took a little longer than I expected mainly because I've been learning and using Blender. I completed the original edits back in February but I wanted to go back and make some additions and changes. Needless to say I'll be adding more Blender content to the Matrix Editions, although I still intend to use as much original model footage as I can.
I'll mainly use Blender for establishing shots of planets and, of course, the TARDIS (I've spent a lot of time building TARDIS models using info found on the amazing tardisbuilders.com).
    'Day of the Daleks'
I used the omnibus cut as a guide but edited the 2011 'Special Edition'. The only change to the cut was reintroducing the scene where the Controller lets the Doctor go, because his redemption is an important part of the story that was sadly cut from the omnibus. I also enhanced the Dalek gun effects, partly because they were a bit weak in the Special Edition but also to make them closer to the effects I've done in later stories (and yes, I'll be redoing the ones in Planet of the Daleks!).
Also, since the Dalek gun sounds vary from story to story in the Pertwee era, I decided to use the sound effect from Genesis of the Daleks instead because it sounds so much better and is closer to the sound used for the rest of the colour Classic stories.
    'The Curse of Peladon'
This was a tough edit as there were so few concurrent story threads to cut between, but I'm quite happy with the result. It needed a few new VFX shots but not as much as the other stories in this season. The main challenge with this one was getting the running time as low as possible!
    'The Sea Devils'
This has been a popular story among fans for getting some new VFX, although it doesn't have that many. The Sea Devil gun effect is similar to the one I used in Warriors of the Deep, but as it's a very different looking weapon, which spits flames, I still wanted to distinguish them by making it a solid, fast moving effect rather than the slower hoops I used in Warriors.
I enhanced the submarine model shots by making them much darker and adding a subtle underwater distortion effect.
    'The Mutants'
It doesn't feel like that long ago I did the new effects for The Mutants but I decided to add a few more anyway. Resolve provides much better rendering than Hitfilm, so I took the transparent effects from Hitfilm and composited them in Resolve. I enjoyed doing the 'Previously on...' recap for this (in fact, this may have been the first one I did - then decided to add them to Season 8 too - another reason Season 9 took a long time!)
    'The Time Monster'
While I was quite happy with the effects I did in Hitfilm for this one, I did most of them again from scratch in Resolve (apart from the Benton shot). This story was also the reason I learned Blender, because I wanted to improve on the shots of both TARDISes in the Time Vortex and add a few new ones. The Master's TARDIS was the first 3D model I created in Blender (after the donut, of course!). Originally I used one of Conor Norwood's excellent TARDIS models, but after spending some considerable time looking at the blueprints on tardisbuilders.com, I decided to make my own instead, which took about a week.
Like the Dalek gun effects and sounds, I also realised that if I was going to have consistency throughout all the Matrix edits, from season 8 right through to season 26, then I needed to come up with not only a consistent Time Vortex effect but also the ability to put each version of the TARDIS inside the vortex (rather than try to composite the, often poor and inaccurate, existing model shots of the TARDIS).
After watching various 'hyperspace', 'wormhole' and 'time tunnel' tutorials on CZcams, I eventually came up with an effect heavily influenced by the 'blue tunnel' slit scan title sequence mainly associated with Tom Baker's episodes (but originating in Pertwee's era, of course). To me, that effect is the Time Vortex. I might tweak it a bit here and there, but it'll remain constant throughout the edits.
All editing and effects are achieved using FREE software.

Very nice establishing shot of Atlantis for 'Time Monster' - that's exactly what some of these stories need. I look forward to Season 10 and Draconia and the Draconian Palace...
