- 0:00 - Intro
0:09 - Ollis transported
For the disappearance effects I wanted to draw a connection to the appearance of the anti-matter blob itself, so I used a similar posterized effect. I also added a "bulge" effect to give the impression that objects we're being pulled out of this reality - as if the fabric of space/time was being briefly warped.
0:16 - Tyler transported
0:20 - Out pops blob
The blob works well on it's own, but I did want to give it a glow to make it feel more within the scene rather than being superimposed.
0:28 - Bessie transported
In some of the shots of things being zapped out of reality it's not always clear what has been zapped so I added a brief silhouette afterimage of the object that's been zapped,.
0:42 - Attack of the Gel guards
Again, the practical effect of the Gel guard's claw weapon is quite good, so I didn't want to spoil it by covering it with an effect. Instead I just enhanced the glow that you see through the claw.
1:11 - Furniture transported
1:17 - Planet of the Time Lords
The Time Lords planet hadn't been named by this point but that doesn't stop it making an appearance! Kepler-20e takes the role of, what would become, Gallifrey. I couldn't find a hi-resolution image of the planet used in the 2005 series, but Kepler-20e does a pretty good cosplay.
Thanks to @DWSSG01 on Twitter for suggesting I include this shot!
1:27 - The Time Lords watch telly
I really wanted to give the Time Lords a colour TV, but knew that it would cause complications, especially with most of the footage of the Doctors being in black & white!
1:32 - The Black Hole
I used a modern image of what we think black holes look like, rather than the swirling maelstrom that was used in most sci-fi of the 70s and 80s. This particular animation comes straight from NASA!
1:38 - 2nd on screen
I put a request out of Twitter for any colourisations of these specially shot scenes, and thankfully @whocolour was able to provide a couple of shots from their wonderful channel (go check it out!). I merged the colourisations with the original image and made a few tweaks to the colours.
1:44 - Doctors arguing
This was my first attempt at doing colourisation, of either a still or moving image. I'm fairly pleased with how it's come out, but when you stare at these things for so long you start to lose any perspective!
1:55 - 1st in his garden
Thanks again to @whocolour for the use of their First Doctor colourisation in this shot.
1:59 - More furniture transported
2:07 - Doctor & Jo transported
The residual pale blue silhouette of the Doctor and Jo when the screen goes completely white wasn't intended, but I left it in because it looked quite cool. Almost like a retinal afterimage.
2:17 - Anti-matter blob gets feisty
2:22 - Black hole on screen
For the 'energy beam' that's draining the Time Lord's power I tried to keep it quite simple but also give the impression it was pulling energy into the black hole.
2:33 - Benton zaps blob
I did a few versions of this, ranging from a full beam to just an extra little glow. I settled on something in-between that compliments the sound and the original effect (which, unless I'm much mistaken, is entirely practical - something I only noticed when working on this shot!).
3:03 - Surrounded by Gel guards
3:11 - UNIT HQ transported
I more or less had to re-build this as a new composite shot, since the original before-and-after frames just didn't match up. Thanks to Quinton Reviews (@Q_Review) on Twitter for the suggestion to discolour the grass where the building had been.
3:21 - Brig looks outside
In the novelisation the sky on Omega's planet is described as purple. Once I made the decision to change the colour I then had to change it in all of the scenes shot in Springwell. Hopefully they look a bit more otherworldly than a quarry in Ricky!
The external composite shot of UNIT HQ uses an image of Denham Manor Care Home from their website and an AI generated image of a quarry (there were no suitable images of real quarries online!).
3:30 - 2nd & Benton taken to Omega
I had no intention of doing a "palace", like the one described in the novel. Partly because the interior doesn't rlook very palace-like, but mainly because I didn't have a clue where to find a suitable image. So I used Bing's AI image generator! And after literally hundreds of attempts I got what I was after.
3:41 - Singularity
3:49 - Escape from the palace
3:58 - Pursued
4:17 - 1st on screen
Luckily William Hartnell doesn't move around too much so this colourisation wasn't as complex as the one of 2 and 3.
4:33 - Doctors conspire
4:58 - Gel guards chase Bessie
5:08 - Omega takes off helmet
5:20 - 2 & 3 make their escape
5:38 - 1st on screen again
5:45 - Return to HQ
5:48 - Through the Singularity
6:41 - Anti-matter meets matter
6:52 - Supernova
I replaced the original image with one of a real residual supernova
6:57 - There's no place like home
7:03 - Ollis returns - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Absolutely stunning wish this had been released on the Blu-ray 😍😍
Rendering Omega's lair to resemble Omega himself? Time Lord brilliance!
Wonderful work, I'd say your best yet! Especially love Omega's palace and UNIT HQ in the quarry, not to mention the Time Lords finally discovering colour TV!
Just brilliant - your best yet I think. Thanks for including the Time Lord planet and particularly Omega's palace that I suggested. A nice surprise was UNIT HQ in the quarry - lovely idea. Black Hole work and the nebula was excellent! Hope to see Frontier revisited as that's another story that needs establishing shots (Draconia etc). Thanks so much for your hard work. Wish we had these on Blu Ray.
Hey there! Thanks so much for your suggestions! You have Bing and DALL-E to thank for the Palace. I started by feeding it the description from the novelisation, "...a towering castle...beaten from solid brass...with hundreds of towers and slender minarets...beneath the purple sky...giving the whole place a look of oriental opulence like the Arabian knights castle of some Caliph." - which came out amazing but it just didn't fit (I'll post some images on Twitter). I wanted something that looked similar to Omega's helmet, with a more alien and angular look. So I just kept updating the description, over and over and over, for most of last Saturday I think! Eventually I started getting images I liked so then it was a matter of picking one and making it blend in with the lighting and surroundings.
I also used it for the shot of the "quarry" where UNIT HQ lands because, bizarrely, I couldn't find a single picture online of a suitable quarry from ground level, as they're mostly aerial shots.
I'll definitely be using it more in future I reckon!
@@cunningmunki Glad to be of service. :) It looks terrific. I would have had the planet shot for a little longer with a caption identifying it perhaps? Please do post shots - would love to see them. i have loads more ideas if you want 'em... :)
@@dragoncymru2940 I think a caption would have been very out of place in classic Who, plus just calling it "The Planet of the Time Lords" sounds a bit silly and calling it "Gallifrey" would open a whole debate about whether you can canonically name something before it was technically named! Another issue with establishing shots is that they need sound. Luckily, the planet, the palace and the shot of UNIT HQ all have sound and music that fit quite well, and are accompanied by scenes that can stand having some seconds cut out, but I don't want to cut too much, like the interior of the Time Lord's control room, because they're important too. Otherwise I have to either find suitable sound effects and reuse music from elsewhere, which may sound quite easy but finding the right ones to fit the scene is quite tough.
For the shot of UNIT HQ reappearing I was able to just use a couple of seconds of bird sounds and the last moment of music from the previous scene.
But I agree that establishing shots are *so* important, and a lot of 70s Who just doesn't have them, especially establishing shots of the TARDIS which I always enjoy adding in 😄🟦
@@cunningmunki Brilliant - totally get your choices too
Great work💯
I love things like the exterior to Omega's palace and UNIT HQ👏
Not sure about the temple in the quarry - but congratulations on the 'electric tinsel' and adding the consistent transportation glow.
I’m late to the party due to life circumstances, but what could I say that hasn’t already been said so I’ll just join in on the applause. Love what you did with the palace!
Never too late Lumibear! Thank you x
Excellent!!!
So great to watch.
Absolutely stunning work. It's a great shame this story didn't get a CGI makeover on the Blu-ray collection. A wasted opportunity to enchance this iconic story.
Bloody brilliant!! Excellent
Sublime!
such an amazing upgrade, I wish i could watch it all with these effects now!
thank you! (link in bio btw!)
Soooo good!!
Will you be updating your edit of this story with these effects (assuming permission is given, of course)?
Very well done 👍
A thing of beauty! 😊👍
Fantastic work
This is magnificent!
Excellent!
Nicely done.
Have you thought about doing some effects updates for 1960s stories? Some of the spaceship effects in particular were very rudimentary. Is it harder or easier if they're in black & white?
Absolutely superb! :-)
Great vid
Excellent...is there a way you can add Hartnells monitor scenes and blot out the reflections..
I've removed the reflections of the camera monitors from the right side of the screen and the moving camera you can see in Ep4. Some of the other reflections I can't take out since they're on Hartnell's face, but I don't think they're very noticeable. I did consider adding an extension to the TARDIS interior wall but couldn't find a suitable image from the correct angle I could use!
@@cunningmunki i used a software called snapseed and it erases and deblobs unwanted artifacts..With Hartnells face i cut and pasted the right cheek and flipped it round and placed it over his left cheek...
I wish they made a castle for omega instead of two doors
shear brilliance. should be added to new ddvd
God: Jon I am a time lord too
Me: Spoilers dad
Troughton : I will explain to you what’s going on in heaven in the future
Hartnell: actually I am the original doctor so I will give the explanations to the child 😊
Was it tricky adding the new effects to the location footage? As there is lots of double images
You mean like when the Gel guards appear? Yes, it was harder to remove the obvious shift between the shots than it was to do the actual effects. Took a lot of compositing still images and running shots backwards, etc. I did a few in Time Monster too, like when the Doctor reappears in the TARDIS, but I didn't include them in the YT video.
Another great effort! I actually quite like the temple in the quarry, gives a much better sense of scale and grandeur more fitting to Omega's will imv. I particularly like the lighting on it, matches the location film very well. I have a question, when you watch any of these stories you've worked on for your own leisure, do you watched your "revised" versions or the originals? If it is the former, know that I am very jealous! 😉👍
I watch mine 😄, in fact I'm halfway through my 60th anniversary Whoathon which was the whole reason I started these in the first place. The problem is I notice things I'd do differently now, especially on my earlier stories like Frontier and Planet of the Daleks, which I might revisit one day. I've just finished watching Planet of Evil and am halfway through Pyramids (I'm a little behind schedule!), and I'll probably revisit those two when the Season 13 Blu-ray eventually surfaces.
Was the First Doctor in his garden William Hartnell, Richard Hurndall or David Bradley?
Hartnell (in his actual garden, apparently!)
Now this puts BBC to shame with their SFX
The Three Doctors just became watchable 😅
Unused Scene:
JO GRANT (horrified): "Doctor! ... What is it? ... It's horrible! ... I can't bear to look!"
DOCTOR (disapproving): "Great balls of fire Jo! ... That's no way to talk about the New Series!"
JO GRANT (incredulous): "But Doctor, you're ... you're a WOMAN!"
DOCTOR: "My dear Jo, just wait until you see me post Jodie Whittaker and David Tennant!"
JO GRANT: "The weirdest things happen in time travel!"
DOCTOR: "And they don't get much weirder than my future self regenerating into Jodie Whittaker!"
JO GRANT: "I hope they write me out! ... The Barmpot Broadcasting Corporation have lost the plot of the show!"
DOCTOR: "Spoiler! ... I hear the sound of Wedding Bells!"
