The Eurovision Song Contest 2004 was the 49th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Istanbul, Turkey, following the country's victory at the 2003 contest with the song "Everyway That I Can" by Sertab Erener. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), the contest was held at the Abdi İpekçi Arena, and (for the first time) consisted of a semi-final on 12 May, and a final on 15 May 2004. The two live shows were presented by Turkish actors Korhan Abay and Meltem Cumbul. It was the first time that Turkey had hosted the contest, 29 years after the country made its debut, and was also the first time since the 1998 contest in Birmingham that it was not hosted in the host country's capital city.
Thirty-six countries participated in the contest, beating the record of twenty-six in the previous edition. Albania, Andorra, Belarus and Serbia and Montenegro took part for the first time this year. The old relegation system was replaced with a semi-final format. This was done in order to accommodate the increasing number of countries who wished to participate. The new format allowed all countries to participate every year, rather than being forced to sit out per the relegation rules, which had been the standard since 1994. Because of this, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Macedonia, Monaco and Switzerland all returned to the contest.
The winner was Ukraine with the song "Wild Dances", performed by Ruslana who wrote it with Oleksandr Ksenofontov (her husband). This was Ukraine's first victory in the contest after only 1 year of participation. Serbia and Montenegro, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus rounded out the top five. Due the expansion of the contest, this year was the first time in which a non-winning entry scored over 200 points. Prior to this contest, only the winning entries in 1994 and 1997 had passed this mark. In this contest, the top 3 songs all got over 200 points. An official CD was released and, for the first time, the entire contest was released on DVD which included the Semi-final and the Grand Final.

How can you not love Serbia and Montenegro? It is a beautiful song.
I don't love it. And what? 😅
Yup I'm liking this comment. I'll have to admit it took my ear time to get used to Balkan ballads but now I have I really appreciate this it's really lovely. Also how could you put the annoying Polish vocalist above this??!! And don't get me started on Switzerland - like Jemini the year before it's fate of being rock bottom with nul points is richly deserved - Harlequin Brin in their bad Eurovision songs I like anyway video described them as not able to sing for two shits and dressed like kindergarten schoolers and yup I can't improve on that. And you put these jokers above Serbia and Montenegro???!!! He me Casse!!!
@@EmoBearRights i am the opposite. I adore the balkan ballads and that's why i think "Lane Moje" is weak compared to many other masterpieces from this genre. (and i love Željko's Eurovision songs, principally but that's the worst his song) It's not in my bottom 10 of 2004, but it's also not in my top 10. Just my opinion. :)
because it is boring
Because he wants to cause controversy and have us comment and be angry so the video goes viral.
2004 had a really strong top 4. As for Zeljjko's entries, they are an acquired taste. But once you get that taste, they are some of the best entries ever.
I think Turkey's 2004 entry was better than its 2003 entry. That Polish singer may have been a guy
Ive checked and he actually ranked Zeljko higher in 2012. I guess he just preferred Nije Ljubav Stvar and Adio
@@arvinroidoatienza7082 both are good songs.
@@commentor3485 Yeah I know. I think he just preferred Adio since its more upbeat. I love all of them of course
R.I.P TOŠE😭😭😭
😪🙏
Thanks for 1st place 😇😍
We have same winner! "For real" is better than "Everyway that I can"(it's a Great Winner but "For real" is better turkish song) Thanks for 10th place 💖
There's a channel called RAJC that has exactly the same opinion and I agree - For Real is great!!!
Our nicknames are very similar.
@@kaW3_4 Haha, true!
I think 2004 Turkey and 2003 Turkey are really fantastic songs for me. I love both of them:):):)
@@escahmet7487 yes, but I prefer for real
I'm big fan of that Lane Moje song, it's his smooth voice and the orchestra. I also love Ruslana
36- Really cheesy, I'm not keen

34- I strangely liked it
33- She was sexy but the song was poor
32- One of the most beautiful songs in Eurovision

30- This didn't work out
29- This gets the party going. Very underrated
28- This definitely was a disco bop. Good song
27- One of the very few non qualifiers I like
26- This is just a cheesy love song by Austria's answer to Boyzone
25- This was repetitive and awful
24- Really pretty ballad
23- I forgot this easily
22- It was not a bad debut but forgettable
21- This was a very good debut. Catchy song
20- Can I say that there was too much red?
19- Deserved a better result but not amazing
18- Latvia's only entry in their native tongue but it didn't work out well
17- Not fantastic but it's growing
16- This was much better than I expected
15- Spain never disappoint with party tunes
14- The face of Martine McCutcheon and the voice of Macy Gray. Interesting
13- Thank god we sent something better than 2003s car crash
12- So this is how Sally Nugent started her career
11- I didn't like the falsetto at all
10- Another normal love song
9- It was like watching Aladdin without Aladdin
8- A beautiful song from a lovely singer
7- It didn't deserve last but it wasn't amazing
6- I wasn't keen on the song or the whole Marie Antoinette look

4- Really good pop song. Great voice
3- One for the ladies and dancers. I LOVE TO DANCE TO THIS
2- Good winner. This has grown on me
1- I'm on the same level with you. My personal favourite
Hey! I agree with most of your statements. But how is Russia like Alladin? 😂💯
@@Greenballoffire The backing dancers look like the Genie
Turkish metalhead electric guitar player here. My guitarist identity speaks here.
Indeed, For Real is the king of 2004. That thing is fucking unique. I am metalhead so this is NOT my style but this (ska/punk rock), is a rare/ half-dead musical genre, and even rarer in ESC. That year had really good rock entries, but honestly, if there were a heavy metal banger from a country, I still would say that For Real should be the winner. That thing was unique and the performance was superb as well. Notice, unlike Ukraine or Greece's entries, the spectators jump up and down, dance there. That was not ESC performance but a real, legit consert, as you can see.
The song is a musical banger too, it has low and high points. climaxes, badass beefy riffs, awesome vocal harmonies, don't forget the drumming as well
Agreed a 100% !!!
The best turkish entry ever for me.
Regards from 🇷🇸
My top 5 that year:
1. Serbia and montenegro
2. Ukraine
3. Cyprus
4. Turkey
5. France
great taste!
Wtf with Serbia and Montenegro? It deserved first place..
Unpopular opinion: 2004 is actually a strong year. And it brung Željko, king himself.
Željko's my winner too!
lol i have troble deciding between serbia n montergo n urkraine
@@Maverick-rd5ok Montenegro*
@@Maverick-rd5ok Yup both are excellent!
It's a lot better than I usually remember it being some surprisingly good stuff and even the UK didn't suck ....entirely.
Switzerland,Belgium and not least Norway above Serbia. That's so crazy

WHY SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO IS IN 32TH?! THIS IS DESERVED WIN!
Although Ukraine was great in 2004, honestly, Zeljko deserved win
Željko totally deserved it!
I disagree tbh
1. Athena - For Real 🥇
👋 from 🇷🇸
Serbia and Montenegro 32nd?
Man, what?
Tose Proeski 😢😢😢
My personal fav in that year was North Macedonia, too underrated from what I’ve seen
imo it's ok, but there's much better songs (however I can see how people could like it)
The same winner 🔥🇹🇷
I totally agree with you, my friend. I have really love his song and performance on stage. I hope Turkey can come back this fantastic show again. This is my biggest wish:):):)
thanks
It's so funny how much I like watching these videos, knowing full well I will disagree with almost every comment 😂
Thanks from Istanbul.
What a beautiful message, my friend. Thanks for sharing:):):)
Serbia should have been in the top 5.
SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO IN 32nd??????
Oh thanks for 3rd place! We live Sakis !
My winner is France 🇫🇷!
Love 💖 from Lebanon 🇱🇧
🇱🇧 💕 🇫🇷
Can you do 2007 and 2010? [with comments pls] [oh and also pls subtitle 2012 thx]
A strong top 3, but overall a weak year for me. Without top 3, i quite like about only 4-5 songs and even some of them are quite unpopular (Slovenia 🇸🇮, Belarus 🇧🇾, Estonia 🇪🇪, Austria 🇦🇹, Monaco 🇮🇩). My top 10.
10: Estonia 🇪🇪
9. Cyprus 🇨🇾
8. Germany 🇩🇪
7. Spain 🇪🇸
6. Greece 🇬🇷
5. Austria 🇦🇹
4. Ukraine 🇺🇦
3. Sweden 🇸🇪
2. Netherlands 🇳🇱
1. Serbia and Montenegro 🇷🇸🇲🇪
everything about your positioning of Zjelko is said in the comments below :-) what i ask myself - how can you be bored by his song but give Croatia a top10 place? It coudl rather be a Zjelko-Song, too, besides it´s sung in english...but I agree with the most other runking, especially Turkey and Norway!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't know if you already did a video but i would like to see a video for Eurovision 2001
It'll come someday.
"Everytime Željko is involved with a song, it's always boring and pretentious."
Said by the same person who placed Adio (Montenegro 2015), a song written and composed by Željko, first in his Top 40 of 2015.
Anyway, interesting top. My winner is sadly your 32nd, but that's ok. Not everyone has the same opinion.
I love Lane moje and Montenegro 2015 too.
Okay, so he only made one good song then, but the rest I don't really like.
@Jakobian As far as I have seen, Balkan ballads are not his thing. He does not hate them, he just doesnt like them either, just like Oro
Very interesting! Totally agree re. France and Norway!
Can you do next your top 42 of 2016 please? I don't know why I really want to see your top of yhe year
WTF, Zeljko is only 32?😱🥺👎🏼 This song was one of the best songs from all Eurovision’s history😔 I’m forever in love with this song, it was awesome and absolutely beautiful, I still enjoy this song in 2022😄❤️
My top-2004:
1. Serbia and Montenegro
2. Ukraine
3. Turkey (love this band)
4. Greece
5. North Macedonia (love Tose Proeski, he was the great singer)
Wow. I've never seen a person who likes Russia 2004. Well, I'm from the place that Julia was born and I know a lot of the performance. As she said, the dancers was too colorful with Ink and she was too nervous about falling down from them in performance just like at repetitions she almost Fell down from them. She was trying to control everything because of the business of the "ОРТ" (ORT). If someone just didn't change the summary of the ink, her vocals would be great. She's the amazing singer, I swear 🎉
My winner is athena for real
Taste! My winner too!
One of the best Turkish songs, a lot better than their winner... For Real is a masterpiece.
Great. I have really love his song:):):)
My top 10 is:
10th: United Kingdom
9th: Albania
8th: Andorra
7th: Turkey
6th: Norway
5th: Germany
4th: Ukraine
3rd: France
2nd: Serbia & Montenegro
1st: Cyprus
Thx for putting Norway to high!
I was not expecting to see S&M that low on the list
Sweden - spare me from Nordic Schlarger. I sometimes think that someone could take a dump on stage and just have the sound of that and as long as it had a bouncy beat behind it you'd still think it was great. Greece is pretty dope though and Ruslana - all hail one of ESC goddesses! She helped a revolution and managed to be fun in the carpool in Rotterdam - she dances like a dervish and belts out this great song. She's awesome and I Stan....hard!!! Yup cosigning every word for Ukraine and Turkey....every....single ...word!!!
I love 2004 and 2003 winner
My winner is Serbia and Montenegro, but I also love Albania, Switzerland, Ireland and Belgium.
Ukraine deserved to win that year.
My top 3:
3. Bosnia Herzegovina
2. Greece
1. Ukraine
spectacular taste!
@@Greenballoffire Oh, thank you so much! ❤️
got to be part of a weird choir production of for real in 2012. it was just a bunch of middle schoolers jumping and yelling on stage... fond memories
2016 next pls 🤗
It wasn’t the strongest year honestly;
Not so many great songs. For me, my Top 8:
1) Belarus 🇧🇾 I know that maybe I overated it but for me this one is just amazing! Plus I love 💖 her accent!
2) Albania 🇦🇱
3) Cyprus 🇨🇾
4) Ukraine 🇺🇦
5) Turkey 🇹🇷
6) France 🇫🇷
7) Sweden 🇸🇪
8) Finland 🇫🇮 (unpopular opinion)
This year is so weak that I barely love any other song. Sorry 😐.
Thank you for 1st place but I think it was weak... I didn't understand what's she singing about... Warm greetings from Belarus ❤️
Thanks for 3rd place
Ah yes the only year in the 2000s where the netherlands actually qualified lol
And also our only qualification from the Semi-Final to the Grand Final with using the National Final format (Nationaal Songfestival), because the rest of our qualifications since 2004 are all Internal.
Turkey and Cyprus are my top 2 but i dont know which i prefer the most
Serbia & Montenegro was definitely the winner in this year
Hola, desde España.Te dejo mi Top 5: Albania, Croacia, Turquia, Ucrania, y GRECIA (Ganadora).-.

Yes, Switzerland is so underrated, I like "Celebrate".
@@ido_cohen yeeees, where are you Switzerland 2004 admirers 😂😂
I love Switzerland as well
I much prefer 20th Century Sweden. That being said, my favourite post-1999 entries from Sweden are 2000, 2004 and 2010.
Macedonia too underrated...it deserved at least a top10
1- Turquie 2- Ukraine 3- Hollande 4- Grèce 5- Allemagne
"Everytime this dude is involved with a song, it feels boring and pretentious"
*Proceeds to put Adio in his 1st of 2015 when it was Zejlko who wrote the song*
Well, there's exceptions for everything I guess. 😅

In your 2003 video you placed Beth too low for being "a generic Latino song", but you place Ramon so much higher in this video, and "Para, llenarme de ti" is one of the most "generic Latino song" Spain has ever sent (it was actually composed and produced by Kike Santander, a well known conposer/producer of big artists in the Latin Anerican music scene during late 90s/early 00s). In the same vein, you place Julia Savicheva kinda high here, despite not having the best vocals (actually, she's such a GREAT singer, but this song didn't showcase her real talent as vocalist, and I can tell you "Believe Me" is probably the worst song from her full catalogue), and you placed t.A.T.u. LAST in the 2003 video for the same reasons!
My favourites of this year are Norway, Spain, Belgium, Greece, France, Serbia and Montenegro, North Macedonia, Rusia, Cyprus.
Great:):) My favourites are Turkey, Greece, France and Ukraine:):):)
The Spain entry @9:11 was a naughty title unless it’s just my filthy mind turning it into something filthy but it says about getting filled
We have similar opinions on many entries for this year, but I can't take Switzerland and Denmark being that high, those are one of my most hated Eurovision songs ever lol.
Also, I have always despised Turkey's entry but I understand why it's so liked
Not a bad list
Greece!!!! 🇬🇧❤️🇬🇷 Sakis
As Slovenia, I really dont like our song from Istanbul. Hope we go in top 10 in Turin with good song!
Those two were flirting to much was my view on it. 2005 should have been top 10.
Same lol. We sent so many better ones /in Slovenian: veliko boljših pesmi smo poslali, te iz 2004 ne maram
why Željko only 32nd place?
Above Celebrate is a much bigger crime
The real first Turkey, 🇹🇷
Comment from Russia. We ourselves do not really like this application from Russia. But I yelled at the comment about teletubbies on steroids🤡
Lane moje 32nd? 😏
i luv malta's and ukraine's entry so much
Aha the Netherlands - yup you guys ain't gonna see a final for the next nine years - actually I do like this I mean it ain't Himmel und Arade or Birds but it's still pretty nice. Monaco - and you call Serbia and Montenegro boring???!!! That said as the song goes I love Belarus this year I discovered this doing a Strictly at Eurovision as the first Strictly winner has ancestors from a place that is now there but was then Poland - I also know the Polish singer's voice gets on my wick. Denmark and Ireland are nice too - it's nice that Molly Sterling and Ryan O'Shaughnessy weren't the only people who represented who weren't either boring or kinda sucky. Latvia - is that the guy from Brainstorm? And the good run stops - sometimes Andorra were robbed - this isn't one of them! Wow Germany is good! And Spain too! Poland - it's a good song but may have mentioned this before but I hate her voice. UK - well it's better than my memory of it and Jemini and Malta - and yes I am damning with faint praise. No Malta's singing isn't great but it's better than Israel's. There's a lot of off key singing here - as the Croatian guy seemed to miss his too! Norway - it's a boring generic and at least it got TO the final..
oh my first is your last :(((((
Ruslana - Ukraine 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦The best 🇺🇦❤️👍
