Ben Simmons of the Sixers is a terrific passer, an elite defender, and he also attacks the rim well. In this interactive challenge video you can test you basketball IQ against Simmons as I breakdown his passing, off-ball movement, and defense. Embiid, 76ers, NBA. - Sport
lmao learned something in “the process”... nice touch whether it was intentional or not😂
Unintentional! But I did catch it before I uploaded.
6/7 Thought he would’ve hit Kork in then corner on the fifth play over Horford but I didn’t realize Vanvleet was close enough to Kork to cover the shot
Same. I feel like if you threw the pass hard enough Van Vleet wouldn't have been able to contest
I thought the same too.
Me too
Yep same
Same for me. I figured with Simmons height and passing ability that Kork was the better option considering how bad Horford has been this year.
Video starts at 1:27
Love that you chose more non pick and roll situations this time around! Would love to see more defensive decisions and players of other positions
He had to choose non P&R with Ben, cause Simmons non-existant jumper renders the play very ineffective for the Sixers to run with him
I love these videos. Always gives an outlook on the game one may not have coming in. You do amazing work man. Definitely an inspiration with how you break down the game.
Yeah another banger from coach Daniel! Ily
7/7 Guess i'm going to the nba next year
ben simmons has to cut cause him being on 3 point line helps literally noone besides opposition team
Ya but it’s not a good idea to give him a running start either. He is dangerous everywhere.
@@pigs6486 At least you would rather go up against his only viable option than an option that doesn't exist in his skillset. He's also a sub 60% FT shooter.
Dumbass noone headass
BludAardvark what’s your point? That Ben should shoot threes because he’s only shooting 59.4% career FT? That’s logical. Regardless of his shooting weaknesses he’s still been all star both years of his short career. BTW, his FT percentage this year improved to 62.7%, so it will be over 60% next season for sure so you will have to find another stat to throw shade on him with. Also, can you say DPOY? No, better get the hang of it because he’s the leading contender in this shortened season. Haters gonna hate!
dope type of videos man need more like them , you re doing an amazin job !!!!
Really enjoy these videos!!
as someone new to the nba i really appreciate these videos. it's a fun way to learn more about the subtleties of the game.
Excellent video Daniel!
Amazing format for a video! It's very engaging
Do more of this coach... you helping me a lot
Love these type of videos
love these so much
Love these vids they really break down all the decisions nba players have to make!
That bounce pass to horford in the post is what i do in 2k it’s unstoppable when drawing the D
You and @bballbreakdown have the best basketball content period.
Coach Daniel, you should do these every week.
please continue with this kind of video. you're the best!
i love these videos
Thanks for the video
For number 4 the ball handler wasn't forcing the defender into the screen as well, so the slip is an effective way to get the ball moving instead of stagnating with dribble moves.
"Can you shoot the ball like Ben Simmons?"
4/7 6:21 I thought he was gonna pass it to Tobias harris for a layup cuz lowry's hands are up making for an easy bounce pass and on the heat play I thought he would pass to the corner right away (I fell for Olynk's trick) those were the main to that stumped me
Love these... I use them with my14u team
I failed the last one. So hard to decide in a 1 against 2. Great video!!!
I got 5/7 and the last one was the trickiest one for sure. But now that I watched that unfold, the key to that, watch Tobias Harris too.
I was 6/7. I got tripped up on the third play. I didn't think Simmons would slip the screen because I thought that meant he would go to the 3pt line and he is not a 3pt shooter.
7/7 i've watched enough coach daniel videos.
I love these videos I am not sure if you have done Ja Morant yet but is you haven’t please do. Thx
I got 7/7. Your videos help and I’ve already seen 4 of those plays already
On the offensive side I made all correct, but on the defensive side I thought that maybe they would use a cross-switch(?) with Simmons going to Morris and Harris running to Kawhi with additional rotational defender helping in the paint.
Man if he could shoot he’d be one of the best ever already
Could you make a video similar to this but with John Stockton or maybe Magic Johnson?
In the 6th play thought he'd give it to joel who then would pass it to the corner.
my man getting sponsored and all now. whoo!
I picked “make a 3 in all possessions
dude is a smart kid
I got 6/7. I was thinking he would hit Embiid, and didn’t consider the open guy in the corner because the passing lane was cut off at least at that angle. Didn’t think to get the hockey assist.
6/7, I got tripped up at the fast break question. I opted for simmons to cut right assuming the man in the paint would cut left to drag defenders and open up the lane for simmons. Turns out the lane was already open on the left!!
on number 5 you could argue that Tobias should've made the "dunkers cut" and either that pocket pass or lob pass would've been there because of vanvleets size and neutral positioning
Yes! I agree.
Wasn't sure about the Horford play, would've liked corner three more even though I saw FVV's neutral stance, but that's cause of the anti-long two bias I have
Corpse Horford could’ve driven or passed from his spot. Analytics still don’t mind wide open midranges anyways
That's a good bias to have!
Horford wasn't taking a long 2, to me it looked like around 18 feet which is a very good shot if wide open
You're like the Brett kollmann of basketball
And I love Brett
I got it right, because it seemed obvious, but that first play i think instead of cutting, he should have screened for Korkmaz and got him a wide open 3 from out on top.
The cut drew Lowry enough for a sprint close out, but an open look would have been better
Maybe vanfleet was in a neutral stance so that he can run to the corner in time.however I believe it’s a better to pass to the corner
6/7 deym almost I went for the corner pass on the 6th question
7/7
Ben Simmons is indeed a talented player but personally I believe he is hyped compared to his general abilities , but not taking away any of his amazing game reading senses .
Great videos !
Also I really can't I overlook the the fact how the so called Embiid - Simmons problem is turning out to be , when I am a huge Embiid fan myself
6/7. Thought the kick to Embiid or the direct pass to Scott was the plat to make.Sometimes it's not about the assist, but creating the shot for your teammates
7/7 lets go!
Haha that last highlight is how I would have played it. Take ball aggressively and play goalie on the corner. Simmons is a different level athlete though, he was ready to cover baseline there too.
6/7 I misread Tobi's momentum on the last play and thought it would be easier for Harris to get to Kawhi instead of Morris. I wanted Simmons to cover the Morris shot and the pass to JV(?) in the middle.
Damn at 8:38 I thought it said Nigga's chest😂😂😂
7/7, this was such a Ben Simmons video. I could tell what he was gonna do just because it was him lmfao
In number 3, i thought maybe if he doesn't take the space, there maybe a chance of both defenders trying to stop the ball.. Atleast he has one option, to pass it to open three or a layup pass.. Since he is a bas free throw shooter though😃
Honestly on the Horford pass lowrey was a little off on Ennis I can't say that tree isn't also worth it, although the mid range by horford is a better shot
Coolest fucking video ever. Coach nick should definitely steal this from you, and necessarily give you a shout out
I don't agree with #5. It was an open look but a long jumper isn't the best option. I would do euro step or side step to get VF to commit..or at least bait / distract him a bit for a good open corner 3. He could also run-in along the paint line which opens the passing option for either an ally-op or a mid air wrap around pass.....or even a corner 3 on the left depending on how the defense react.
At 4:08 I got that one wrong. I said right because he could have blown past his primary defender. Then the momentum of the second defender was absolutly not optimal for the defense and the third defender could have been stopped with a screen from Simmons teammate. So he would have had plenty of space yo take a 3 but I forgot it was Simmons we're talking about...
I thought for some reason the stunt by Simmons was going to be about preventing Kawhi from a backdoor cut. I was wrong in that sense. It's interesting that you had the stats to justify his decision.
Got 6/7. On play 6, I saw the 2 on 1 on the strong side, but I thought Simmons would hit Scott in the corner for 3. Didn't realize Olynyk was backpedaling.
6/7... thought Simmons should have just boxed out Leonard on the last play. I figured that Morris above the break was a worse shot than Leonard in the corner. I also thought Morris would be looking to shoot right away not hope for a pass to the corner.
7/7 absolute gun
Honestly, since Simmons doesn't have a decent shot, 5:24 should not do a hard hedge. The best and only appropriate play would be treating Simmons as a rolling big and drop. It's a strong side two man pick and roll where the player who sets pick has no shootimg and the ball handler has no speed. Don't know what's so hard about it.
Should've iced it
I agree.
7:40 Or you could’ve read it as: Kawhi can shoot and Horford is already closing out to the other guy, leaving him would be like helping off a shooter. Still stunt because otherwise he has an open shot
I got a 5/7 but i was second guessing myself with the ben simmons jab step defensively when trying to buy time for tobias harris to recover 😂😂.... AHHHH i need to study more
can you keep doing these?
VanVleet's defense at 6:22 XD
6/7, last one got me
#7, if Kwaii had swung the ball in to the center, it’d have been a dunk. I don’t know if Simmons would’ve been fast enough to take that away. It ain’t exactly his fault, more of Embid not recovering fast enough but still I think this was broken up more by the lack of awareness by Kwaii and not the Defense. Love this format of video, forces us to think.
I got all the questions with options, I missed the last three lmao
6/7 biffed that coast to coast drive for some reason.
You led me astray, haha. Literally was simple and easy decisions
It's hard to really judge Ben Simmons because of how he plays and how you'd want him to play. On the swing pass, I wanted him to go RIGHT at Jimmy Butler. Speaking as a 76ers fan. I think if this game were played again, Ben would take that challenge. While the "right play" is the kick out to the open guy, it's part of Ben's evolution to be able to take on even the best defenders and win that battle. And like everyone else said, the easier "read" would have been if he actually shot the shots. I totally flopped on Ben even as a 76ers fan. Because of what we'd all want him to become, and what he's not yet.
7 make these harder please
It's easy for Simmons to make a decision when he's already determined he won't shoot outside the paint. That's why he's easy to throttle by good defenses in the playoffs.
6/7. the defensive play got me. but rs i cant tell if my iq improved or these were some easy reads
obvs gonna be way harder in game tho
6/7, the 6th play was tough
In the 7th play when tobias Harris had guarded the shooter there was an open guy in the paint for a few seconds the guy that tobias Harris was running to should have passed it to the open centre instead of the guy in the corner
I knew this stuff when I was on 3rd grade
6.5/7 because one the 6th one I couldnt decide in time whether to pass it hockey assist wise or direct pass to the corner
I got 8 out of 7. Gave myself a bonus point for being a Sixers fan.
6/7 on the second to last play I thought he would directly to the corner
6/7 On #2, I thought the cut would’ve been too obvious.
Simmons off ball game in one step: you can't shoot, you cut, simple as that 😂
Loving simmons though, he's having a great season!
@Hugh Mungus that's for sure! Outside of p&r, it depends on how the other team uses simmons' defender imo. If they send him to help (for example on embiid), cutting surely is the only option available, since he's not a shooter and he cannot force defensive rotation!
7/7, I am a great student !
Coach Daniel has 143K subscribers as I write this, and Coach Nick at BBallBreakdown, with fancy music, has 750K subscribers.
Both do great basketball analysis, but Coach Daniel deserves way, way more attention than he's getting.
In the pocket pass play to Horford I really thought he was gonna pass it to the cutting Tobias in the dunker's spot. Entire video talking about that same cut and Tobias doesn't do it lol Link him to your videos Coach
Great observation! Harris may have been open there if he cut.
5/7 I missed the Horford play and the play the heat zone play
6/7 I decided to pass it straight to the corner in #6
Ben Simmons would be so amazing if he wasn't afraid to shoot a jumpshot. Imagine defenders having to consider if he'll shoot or not.
6/7 thought the corner pass to korkmaz was the good shot
Ben Simmons for DPOY
6/7 number 6 messed me up
hindsight
5/7 the defensive. Couldn’t get the defensive one right and the slip screen one.
Now do all these in less then 2 seconds. While under pressure
can you do this with james harden
“Here you can see the power of the cut” literally just jogs towards an open lane lol
It was "powerful" because it opened up #30 to be able to replace the area where Ben was and both of them are threats where they ended and he(Coach Daniel) said, it also created defensive floor balance if #30 decided to shoot rather that attack the close out which was the right decision by him BTW.
You’re a idiot he’s not saying power like how much u bench power 🤣🤣 u dumbfuck
