  • Whitby Landscape Photography - AVOIDING THE ICONIC
    In this video, I scout out areas of a well-photographed area and take amazing pictures avoiding the Iconic areas.
    Last week I ventured to the East coast of England once again but this time I'm in search of something different. I headed to the wonderful town of Whitby.
    My aim was to find alternative shots, well away from the normal Iconic shots that most visiting photographers will take. Having said that there is nothing wrong with photographing the Iconic shot. I have made quite a few videos on this subject, but today I wanted something different.
    It can often be quite a challenge to find an alternative shot of a well-photographed area. After all, there's a very good reason why certain locations end up as Iconic locations!
    I'll let you be the judge...
    I hope you like the video. All comments are welcome

    Love it. The last shots were the best thanks to the colours the sky had to offer. Drone work was great too. I thought your first shot that you didn't like was excellent. Perhaps it's been done to death? I wouldn't know. Claim them as yours as the world is large. Thanks Gary, always.

    Hi Gary, I am very happy to have found this series of wonderfully gritty and enjoyable videos. This one is particularly interesting for me, as I spent a lot of my early life around the east coast of England. I was born in a village called Lingdale, not too far from Whitby. My mum, dad and I loved to spend hours walking around the town and have some fish'n'chips and I started my career in the north of England as a professional photographer, so this series you are painstakingly producing is going to be something I will follow from now on, with a keen interest, especially that I feel you have rejuvenated my passion for landscape photography, which I now regret not spending as much time and effort that you put in, to create some amazing images. I now live in Thailand and have done for 30 years, working in all fields of photography and video productions, but next time I get to the UK, I will make an effort to follow in your footsteps. Actually watching this video was quite emotional for me, as it brought back some wonderful memories of when my mum and dad were alive. Cheers mate from David

    • @GaryGough
      @GaryGough  Před 5 lety

      I don't know what to say. I genuinely felt emotional reading your story and kind words. Thank you. Do you shoot Professionally in Thailand still? I'd love to see your work there, website, FB? I'm actually very interested David

    • @davyfbkk
      @davyfbkk Před 5 lety

      Gary Gough Yes Gary, I do still shoot professionally in Thailand, but most of my work is corporate video productions for hotels restaurants etc, so stills work is suffering at the moment. However, I am working on a series of shots of Thai temples which is just getting going and it's fun. After watching your Lake District features, I must admit to making a big mistake by not really spending as much time shooting landscapes - in what is - one of the most amazing places in the world for unspoilt natural beauty. However, during the late 70's i spent many a fantastic day trekking the hills of the west coast of Scotland up past where my brother lives on the River Clyde and it's an awesome area. I spent many a day, up to my knees in snow and freezing mountain streams shooting with my Rolleiflex Twin Lens Reflex on a tripod I still use today. Unfortunately, I had a similar fate to you losing your drone, by pulling a bit too hard on the cable release one day as the camera wasn't locked properly to the tripod plate, so it fell off into the fairly deep freezing waters. But at least it's wasn't a 1000 quid!! Mate, any chance of you arranging a photo trip to Thailand in the future? If so I would love to join in and give a helping hand.

    Gary, don't be so hard on yourself; the beach hut picture is great. It is a study in contrast which is what makes the photography. Color of the huts vs the blandness of the water and sky; the lack of space around the huts vs the vastness of the ocean; then last but not least you have the leading line of the huts going to the pier and then the pier taking the eye out into the ocean this contrast the congestion cause by humanity (the huts) and the wonderment of what lies in the quietness of the seas.
    Great shot, keep up the good work; your fan club is always with you. Gregg

      I liked all of the pier shots, but early on I was enamored with the flat out horizontal. I'd put that on the wall. Then I saw that the pier is more complicated. Still all good pics. I liked them better than the later "color" pics. But, you know it's all subjective as they say.

    Really jealous of some of the coastal locations up north..I struggle to find interesting compositions in Norfolk where I am ...there's only so many pictures of sea defences you can take!! Love the last few images you've taken here.

    Whitby's great at this time of year, due to it been north facing you can capture a sunrise and sunset and if planned properly you don't have to stay out all day to do it. Love the end images, maybe a trip to Saltwick Bay next time!

    Wow Gary, they got better & better with the sun setting and the mixing of sky & sea was superbly done... I have been playing with the ISO 50 feature on my new 5DM3 too, liking the results overall. Great idea moving away from the typical sunrise shot on this locale & trying a sunset instead & successfully done at that! I like that you move around alot in search of the best angle.
    Cheers,

    Gary,
    Nice progression in working the location. The blending of sky and foreground (foresea?) exposures is masterful. The transition from mono to color was very intriguing, and hanging-out for the golden hour was time well-spent. I must mention your drone composition really catches my eye. I don't often see that fore thought for flightpath.
    I see hints of those massively muscled macho legs. How lurid! Perhaps, while at the coast with warm weather, you can film a blog wearing Speedo budgie-smugglers. You know, something for the ladies...
    Thank-You,
    Mike

    I'm not sure I agree with you on the blurry sky issue, but that's a personal preference. What I can tell you is that the location you were shooting from is very close to where my Grandparent's house still stands to this day on Westcliff where I spent many a childhood holiday.

    You should call into Saltburn By The Sea, its just up the coast from Whitby. Our Victorian pier will be 150 years old 2019. The sun at this time of year sets behind the wind farm at Redcar. We have some of the highest cliffs and one of the longest stretch of sandy beach in the UK.

      @GaryGough  Před 6 lety

      lol I shot a long exposure, then removed the filter from the front of the lens to grab a shot of the sky with a faster shutter speed. I just clipped it back on the did a piece to the camera. When I picked the camera up to move on I noticed it then. I had to look back at the shots I just took, just to make I wasn't a muppet. lol

    Loved the long exposures Gary,but feel they were unbalanced, to much rock on the right side, perhaps panning a bit to that side may have balanced the image better? or it's just me,anywho great vlog,cheers.

    • @williamconnell6541
      @williamconnell6541 Před 6 lety

      After watching it again there's only the one image and that's at the 6 min mark, doesn't feel right to me, feels lonely if you know what i mean, there's the stone wall the two lighthouses and two piers i guess they are but from this angle it looks like a slither of rock and steel (on the one side, making it unbalanced} in a large smooth sea and big sky,but as i said before it's just my perception of the image :) ,thanks.
