  • Landscape Photography - It's not about the gear. In this series of videos I aim to prove that you can use entry level Photographic equipment to take stunning pictures.
All photographs shown were shot using...
    Nikon D5000 (entry level DSLR)
I bought this second hand on Ebay
Tripod by Jessops (Entry level but very sturdy)
again, I bought this second hand on Ebay
    Combined they cost me £150
    AND THAT'S ALL I USED!
    More about me: www.shootsmart.co.uk
    See the pictures: tinyurl.com/htzxenz
    Credits:
Music: Rock Angel - Joakim Karud
Tiler in the T5: Lee Call
Drone Filming: Lee Call Photography & Film
A huge thanks to Lee Call my great mate for a great day out and for lending a helping hand with your drone - He might be an arse but his drone footage is ace - I'm guessing I'll just have to put up with him just for that!

There's one thing that I've often said...and has caused more ( ahem ) 'discussion's' than anything else...and that is...'Cameras don't take photographs...PHOTOGRAPHERS take photographs...cameras record what you tell them to'.
Thanks for proving that for me !

Was binge-watching Heaton, and came across this video. I subscribed, based on a. your photographs, and b. your easy-going presentation. As a Salfordian who has lived in Missouri, for the last four years, it was a pleasure to watch someone who reminded me of my mates back in Salford. The music was pretty good, too. Great work, Gary.

I think it's really important to note that at one point in time the "2nd hand gear" was the pro gear. If it's far enough away, you can do a banner on 3mp and it'll be just fine. Great video series!

Thanks for a great video Gary - I am subscribing partly because I like your manner and presentation style, and I like the fact you are not hyping expensive gear which some of us cannot afford, or, in my case, can't afford and do not see the need for. My "entry level" D3400 and an "old" D300 take great photos when I expose correctly, compose correctly and slow down enough to think about what I am doing. (Of course that's not the way every shot turns out!!) Great job, looking forward to seeing more (referred here by a happy viewer, by the way!) Cheers!

Gary Gough. Hi Gary, your videos old or new, are so organic and earthy and really engage the viewer, me included. Today in fact, I was supposed to work on a video edit but got immersed in your Lake District shoot. Another wonderful area of the Uk, that has fond memories for me. Btw, have you been up to shoot at the west coast of Scotland? I spent many occasions up to my knees in deep snow and freezing water with my Rolleiflex Twin Lens Reflex shooting some of the most dramatic landscapes I have ever seen. I recommend areas such as around Helensburgh, Garelochhead and basically the whole west coast is magnificent. I am currently rebuilding my website and will have it back up running in mid Oct, so will send you a link to it when it's ready. I also teach photography and video production in Bangkok. Most recently at Stamford University. If you get chance to come to Thailand, I would love to meet you and perhaps get out to do some shooting together or even if you arrange a field trip for some photographers to visit Thailand would be great.

Bought a camera and 6 lenses, plus filters (some old fashioned daft ones like the star thing) remote (shutter cable), an adapter the camera needed, camera bag and a few other bits and bats for £90. It's my go to camera now making my 5DIII redundant, and it's much more fun to use, an Olympus OM10. Totally agree with your sentiments, I do have some higher end kit 5DII 5DIII and a 7DII and at least 6 L lenses and 3 good quality third party, but I get as much fun out of my 35mm cameras and much much more fun with my Bronica ETRSi (£250 with lens and 2 backs) The only thing I wouldn't cut cost on is the tripod. Great video.

A very enjoyable video. I agree about the over-emphasis on gear, but that's commerce, I suppose. I do a lot of hill climbing to get my pics and just take a couple of super-compacts, a Canon and a Fuji; mainly for weight reasons. Good video Gary, and so.e sound advice for beginners. I total agree that a cheap camera is all you need to get started. The most difficult practical part IMO is eye for composition. Settings you can search for on CZcams, composition is solely in the person eye and interpretation of the scene.
Secondly software , once I got Lightroom and Photoshop I did not have a clue what I was doing or what slider did what and how to make am under exposed image good ! This to me is the biggest learning curve as you do need a decent computer , reasonable amount of storage ( Raw files), and money for LR and PS.
After 18 months of using LR I think I am more than ok and can edit any poorly taken photo. However that was apt of watching CZcams tutorials !

i am currently shooting with a d3300 and completely agree you don't need a $7000 camera to take decent shots. will i upgrade eventually? Most likely, but for now i'm getting out in the cold, the wet, the sun and fog and loving every minute of it and producing images that i can enjoy

Enjoyed the videos and the terrific information but I do have one critique on the final edit. The music is just dreadful. I was able to listen to you over the wind but had to mute the video while the music played. I am not trying to be a jerk but wanted to give you my honest opinion. If the music is a must, maybe just a little softer in the background. Thank You

A very justified photography video. Far too many people have equipment that is much too good for their skills! But may I ask what tripod you bought off Ebay for £20? Did you go for one that you knew would be OK, or just take a chance on anything at that price? I'm still using my two compact cameras, and a short tripod, but could do with a taller tripod for some shots.

On your 18-55 does the front element seem to wobble about rather excessively? I got a hand me down D5000 with both kit lenses but the 55-200 has (or had, not sure where it is) a bad focus motor, the 18-55 works but has that wobble and the exposure is roughly one stop under.

Most aweful music and too laud vs voice over. Currently I'm using a canon t3i with a decent lense (sigma 17-70, f2.8-4) and understand the general idea of landscape photography. My question is if I am able to capture a good image what size of photo is possible? Apature priority, ISO 100, f8-9.
