  • Landscape Photography Isle of Skye - Photographing the Northern Lights. Pictures from my latest Photography Workshop
In March I set off to the Isle of Skye to run one of my two annual Isle of Skye 5-Day Workshops. Most of us travelled up from West Yorkshire on Sunday, the day before the course start date. The whole day proved to be more than eventful.
Firstly I had to collect the guys from a couple of different areas in my town. This in itself proved to be a huge challenge. The day before our town experienced blizzard conditions caused by the Beast from the East. I even struggled to get off my drive. It took me an hour to round the guys up. This journey should have taken 10 minutes. Was this a sign of terrible things to come? As it happens once we hit the M62 and traveled past Manchester, the rest of trip was plain sailing.
My eventful day was far from over though... The journey took us around 9 hours which is pretty normal. We had just finished unpacking when we got a message from Dougie the owner of the B&B that the Northern Lights were due that night. My Aurora Borealis AP alerted me to an imminent viewing too. It wasn't wrong!
At first, we just saw and weird light which shone vertically from the ground to the sky. We just thought it was a streak of light pollution. It wasn't. Unbeknown to me I actually witnessed and photographed a very rare event. It still makes the hair on the back of neck stand on end! It was called Dubbed STEVE for short this phenomenon is called Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. After Steve, it was time for the Northern Lights to do their thing, WOW. This was a first for me, I was buzzing all week!
The workshop went really well. We only had one day which we couldn't actually get out there and shoot. The weather was just awful. I used the day to teach my post-processing and then we headed off to do a little reccying. After the previous two days hiking the relaxed day was more than called for.

Hi Gary. Bloody outstanding !! You've really whet my appetite and timed it perfectly. We're there next week for our first ever visit and planned to shoot at all of the locations you've shown here. I'm going to watch this video over and over during the weekend - so many great images to look at. Paul Johnson did a great video at Storr so I'll be revisiting that as well. Fantastic vlog Gary - so pleased you got to see the Northern Lights. Huge thanks for sharing.

Some of that reminds me of star wars with those huge cliffs! Love it. Just found your channel from the Facebook group and Mark's post. Loved the images of cliffs. The music really augments what are already amazing images.

Great video Gary, love your enthusiasm. I nipped over to Skye on Easter Sunday and had a great day. Visited many of the places you were at: Sligachan, Storr, etc. I tried something different at The Storr (it's on my new website). I find your work and videos inspirational. Regards - John.

My word Gary, where do I start. Never seen so many great images in the one vlog in all the time I have been viewing online content. Had to watch this again to make sure I took it all in.
Watched all your vlogs to date and can honestly say, this is by now my favourite of all them and that is saying something due to the awesome content you produce. Delighted to hear you got a bucket item ticked off the list and will finish this by asking, how are you going to beat that in the future :)

Another fine episode Gary and I was especially interested in this one since Kathy and I will be coming from Canada to visit that area in mid-September. I can hardly wait. Also, congrats on your view count! I've just recently started vlogging and was tickled to pass 100 views ;-). I can't imagine what it's like to surpass 100K.
Keep sharing your photo adventures, they're great!

Looks like Podgy got the 1st comment in from this end... " Give us a kiss! " lol... A joy to have you back Gary as the 1st 6 1/2 mins. of the video took on " epic " proportions... Nat. Geo. should be knocking on your door any day now... Oh, those beautiful Fairy Pools! Just love how you transition from B&W into color on those images. You caught the water shapes perfectly...( aka, Money Shots! ) Powerful imagery Gary, nothing not to like here... :-)
    As always, welcome back,

Certainly nothing to lose any sleep over... Simply keep pushing forward me says...Recently finished up Paul Johnson's episodes, in reverse order, same as I did on yours. Very talented photographer indeed... Paul utilizes the NiSi Filter System as it is looking like I will be moving in this direction as well. Been doing the research, independent labs give them a high score rating with respect to the 100% glass filters & the color neutrality on most all their glass... From your neck of the woods is Kase Filters, very similar in design to the NiSi setup, however I don't know to much about them currently... I wait with bated breath for your next presentation Gary! Bill... :-) WGF Studio53...

Gary, you finally did it; I am selling my cameras and deleting all my videos. You have put everyone, and I mean everyone to shame. This production has taken CZcams to a new level. You had this done by a Hollywood producers, right? :) Seriously this is way over the top of excellence. We felt like we were watching an epic film, Star wars maybe. How many hours did it take to produce this? Proud to be a member of your fan club. Keep up the good work, we truly enjoy it. Gregg & Cathy
