  • From the slums of Buenos Aires to becoming the greatest footballer on Earth, Diego Armando Maradona took Napoli from the bottom half of Serie A to two scudettos and turned a decent Argentina team into 1986 World Cup winners.
On November 25 2020, world football / soccer lost one of its greatest players and biggest characters of all time at the age of 60.
In this video, HITC Sevens pays tribute to Diego Maradona following his death, looking back on some of his highs and lows, and what made El Diego so special.

I think the Italy-Argentina match in WC 90 is worth mentioning. Italy was the host nation and a formidable team, and didn't concede a single goal in first 5 matches. Then they faced Maradona and co. in the Naples stadium, and maybe for the only time in history, the crowd did not support the home team. There was not a single cheer for Italy, but all were for Maradona, Emmanuel, as they called him. Italy subsequently lost the game.

He came to Kolkata (India ) and an exhibition match was organized between two local rivals. That was an excuse, over 120000 people turned up to see him including me. Realizing he was surrounded by non-sense bureaucrats he climbed on top of the car so that we could see him. Despite being the god of football he took keen interests in local rival teams which (the clubs) I am sure nobody knows around the world. During break he went to the middle of the pitch and showed us some tricks before press/bureaucrats could catch him and block our view. Next day he was taken to a local ground and there he asked all non-sense bureaucrats to leave the ground, showed tricks to the crowd and handed them the balls he did his tricks with. That day I realized he lived for common man. He was one of us!!! RIP!

As an Argentinean I love to hear an English guy talking good about Diego 11:51, because he was pure football and anyone who love football would love or appreciate him, he was a human being after all. Football unite us brother. "He had been able to commit, in just five minutes, the two most contradictory goals in the entire history of football. His devotees revered him for both of them: not only was the artist's goal worthy of admiration, embroidered by the devilishness on his legs , but also, and perhaps more, the thief's goal, which his hand stoled. Diego Armando Maradona was worshiped not only for his prodigious juggling but also because he was a dirty, sinful god, the most human of the gods. Anyone could recognized in him a walking synthesis of human weaknesses ...
But the gods do not retire, human though they are. He was never able to return to the anonymous crowd where he came from.
Fame, which had saved him from misery, made him a prisoner. "- Eduardo Galeano.

I’m a Sheffield United fan. We almost bought Maradona in 1978....a deal was verbally agreed but the transfer fee was later increased so we bought Alejandro Sabella instead...another very skilful ball juggling player with quick feet but Sabella was slow and lightweight. I remember the 1986 World Cup and I’ve never seen a player ever dominate a tournament so much. Regards the Argentina v England match...at the time I didn’t think it was handball...he disguised it so well. Felt cheated at the time then a few minutes later he scored that fantastic goal which made me speechless regards the unbelievable brilliance. Maradona has always been the arch villain in English history..he’s always been in the English newspapers over the decades...here he’s loved, hated, respected and will always be remembered.

Video after video of his playing days shows him being subjected to the most brutal tackles imaginable, desperate physical assaults that today would not only win red cards but probably time in prison for the perpetrators. Such strength, such balance, such skill and such a will to prevail that surpassed anyone else's. Oh yes, and the sweetest left foot since Ferenc Puskás!

The gastric bypass surgery was actually in 2004, and when he recovered in 2005 Diego went on to host his very own TV show, "La noche del 10" (The night of the 10). It had some very emotional moments, like when he talked about his own death and what he'd like his loved ones to say when it happened, and also some pretty funny ones, as well as recreations of some of his best goals.
He was a true popular icon, he also had plenty of bad things like violence towards women, not formally acknowledging some of his children for a long time, among others, but he also brought plenty of joy to so many people. Those who knew him speak of his human quality, how generous and humble he was, even after having achieved everything in his career he remained like that and he would often offer help to those in need.
Diego was strongly opposed to social injustice and he denounced the corruption in FIFA way before anyone else, and yet supported some authoritarian, corrupt, and/or at least questionable political leaders. He was riddled with contradictions like these, he was as flawed as everyone else. But there was one particular area where he excelled over everyone else, and he managed to make millions of people happy by doing that.
There's a phrase attributed to a great Argentinian writer and cartoonist, Roberto Fontanarrosa: "I don't care what Diego did with his life, what matters to me is what he did to mine". And the fact is that when someone brings so much joy to so many people it's hard to remember them with anything but a smile.
It's your right to not be a Diego Maradona fan, for whatever reason, but please respect other people's grief and let us mourn him this first days after his passing. There will be plenty of time to discuss every detail of his life, each of his wrongdoings, and weigh them against his positive actions in a healthy and necessary debate we need to have about every popular idol, but now is not the time for it.
Let's just hope that Diego now gets the peace and quiet he deserves and couldn't have for the last 45 years of his life due to his status as a world star. RIP Pelusa.

One of the most dramatic matches was when Argentina won a dramatic 2-1 tie against Peru in 2013 through an injury-time goal by Martin Palermo. Maradona was the coach.

To be seen as a deity by a Country and also by your adopted home of Naples takes a certain type of player.

This to me just showcases how you can not compare this current era with any that really came before it. Football is completely different and comparing the genius of both Messi with Maradona is nonsense! For starters this era, they have defenders who can't do half of the things that they could from the 70s up until 90s. The football, the boots, the diets, the gyms, the coaching facilities, the pitches...I could go on but all of those are worlds apart now compared to Maradonas era. Messi and the like are playing in the era most suited to beautiful playing footballers, Maradona played during a time that players would go to the pub hours before the game or in his case other illegal things.
Luckily for me being in my late 30s I was just older enough to remember watching the 90 world cup and seeing his genius and others like him and also witnessing the beginning of the Prem and everything after but you just can't say Messi/CR7 are the best ever simply because they have the best of everything to have helped them along. Put any of the 10 world greats of previous decades during now and imagine what they could have achieved! Players will no longer be allowed to have the same demons, those players tend to not even make it past academy.
