Breena, the Demagogue is an Orzhov / Silverquill (Black, White) Commander, joining the Magic: the Gathering multiverse, from MTG's newest set, Strixhaven and Commander 2021. In this video of Jake and Joel are Magic, Joel offers 3 different strategies (for every player) for building Breena, each doing its best to utilize this new Commander to the best of its abilities! Breena is one of the coolest political commanders we've seen - incentivize your opponents to attack each other while you sit back and wait for the win to come to you! Political commanders force your opponents to choose between options that they hate. What are the best ways to build Breena, the Demagogue and get the most out of this new Orzhov / Silverquill General from Commander 2021? About the Three-Ways Series:
Some people like their chicken wings sweet while others prefer them scorching hot; either way, you are eating chicken. Magic the Gathering is a game with many different rules and building a Commander deck that works takes some time and strategy. Understanding the commander of your deck will help inform a deck-building plan that works for you. In this series, Joel discusses commander strategies for every player. This broad-strokes approach will give you a basic breakdown of the commander and three different ways you can build your deck to work with its abilities, without providing a full deck-tech.
What is Commander:
Commander, officially recognized on June 17, 2011, originated from a format called EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander-- there can only be one). The first time we played EDH was around 2009. It is easily the best way to play Magic: The Gathering. The idea was to have a casual format with 100 cards and only a single copy of any one card, with a General: a singular Legendary Creature card in its own zone that can be cast any time, once you have the mana for it. If your general is removed, it goes up by a casting cost of 2 for each time it is removed. Once WOTC officially recognized the format and printed the first Commander product, your General was instead called your Commander and instead of the format being called EDH, it instead became recognized as Commander. If you ever hear anyone say EDH, they are talking about Commander. Make sure to know the cards that are banned in the format before building your deck (listed below).

Cheap evasive creature are really awesome too, they can get bigger fast! Healer's Hawk and Changeling Outcast seems good.
For sure. I always lean toward enchantments and artifacts, maybe creatures, that can repeatedly create them so we have a higher value ceiling
That Bloodthirsty Blade surprisingly overperforms, especially in a wrath-heavy game.

I went with the fun route, but instead of flyiers I used shadow creature cause most of the time they're just unblockble and they become huge with Breena
That new enchantment from the silverquill deck that lets you exile the top card of someone's library when they attack you and you can play it would be great in your "mean" way to build. I think that card is going to be a sleeper hit from these decks like Ohran Frostfang was in 2019.

Underworld Dreams would be really fun with Breena, you gotta make sure everyone is going down almost evenly, to get them with Debt to the Deathless.

Been waiting for the "is a Strixhaven Collector's Box Worth It" video Jake promised a week ago. Though TBH, I've already decided they're worth it for me lmfao! Got 4 box's locked in at 200$ a piece. I've been considering getting a whole case, because I think the "True Chase" cards (read: JP Alt Art Etched Foil Demonic Tutor) will have a SUPER low appearance rate of one per case, similar to Commander Legends. Everyone thought we'd all be getting a Jeweled Lotus, and that they'd be $20.

It is funny if you can get it working, and I used to run a deck with the same strategy. It has kind of fallen off as my play group improved though, since it’s just not strong enough.
I have a Thantis Deathtouch deck that has the same building philosophy of this one although it does not reward them for attacking others lol but it's not like people are eager to attack into a mini wall of deathtouchers with reach/flying.

After reading and rereading Breena, I am so much happier she isn’t in Green. Tho I still smell a lot of orzhov voltron with her.

@@JakeandJoelareMagic looking forward to it! I'm really excited for this deck and while I do have my own list of upgrades (many from this video are on it) I'd love to see what you feel could be removed and added.
Does anyone else feel a little hamstringed with the two opponents requirement? Don't get me wrong i'm super excited for it and i'm really into silverquill as a whole, I just feel like the card would've been a lot more usable if it just stated "an opponent with a higher life total than another player" does anyone feel the same, or have I missed a balancing issue or something? Not trying to be rude, genuinely curious on people's thoughts :) Oh and also, I do like to play 1v1 so she doesn't really work there at all, so I wonder how feasible she is in the late game of CEDH when there's just you and another player left?
It's actually better as is since it opens the door for you to draw 2 cards and get 2 instances of adding 2 +1/+1. Specifically, it's a more defined reading for the ability which helps with rule breaks that could occur otherwise.
I love this card and I love cEDH, but I would go so far as to say that this card has 0 place in the format. It's very reliant on creature based metas where you attack with the creatures - which is more P8 and under as opposed cEDH's P9-10 decks.

Theres a new card that would go well in the strong way. Gives your opponents inkling and inklings can't attack you
cheap evasive creatures. like shadow, menace, flying, unblockable. Then you run a ton of removal that you hold up so if everyone gets foggy coming at you. pop goes the wessel. Also you need to protect breena from removal. boots/greaves/cheap combat tricks that give her indestructable. now you have a aggro build. Politics, is just boring, your list is boring.
