    Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow is a Dimir (Black, Blue) Commander, joining the Magic: the Gathering multiverse, from MTG's Commander 2018. In this video of Jake and Joel are Magic, Joel offers 3 different strategies (Strong, Fun and Mean) for building Yuriko, each doing its best to utilize this Commander to the best of its abilities! Yuriko has ninjutsu and a very strong ability that affects each opponent! In the "Strong" category, we start things off with Unblockables, followed by "Fun": Ninja Tribal, and finally Mean: Topdeck Manipulation. Is Yuriko worth building in EDH and what is the best deck for her to be the commander of? There is a lot to go over! Check out the video and thanks for spending your time with us!
    About the Three-Ways Series:
    Some people like their chicken wings sweet while others prefer them scorching hot; either way, you are eating chicken. Magic the Gathering is a game with many different rules and building a Commander deck that works takes some time and strategy. Understanding the commander of your deck will help inform a deck-building plan that works for you. In this series, Joel discusses commander strategies for every player. This broad-strokes approach will give you a basic breakdown of the commander and three different ways you can build your deck to work with its abilities, without providing a full deck-tech.
    What is Commander:
    Commander, officially recognized on June 17, 2011, originated from a format called EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander-- there can only be one). The first time we played EDH was around 2009. It is easily the best way to play Magic: The Gathering. The idea was to have a casual format with 100 cards and only a single copy of any one card, with a General: a singular Legendary Creature card in its own zone that can be cast any time, once you have the mana for it. If your general is removed, it goes up by a casting cost of 2 for each time it is removed. Once WOTC officially recognized the format and printed the first Commander product, your General was instead called your Commander and instead of the format being called EDH, it instead became recognized as Commander. If you ever hear anyone say EDH, they are talking about Commander. Make sure to know the cards that are banned in the format before building your deck (listed below).

    As a Yuriko player i recommand putting in Tetsuko umezawa fugitive, its a great way to give unblockable to Yuriko and a fair bit of ninjas have either 1 power or toughness . Also i expected the mean way to be extra turns ( cause that's my mean way to play it ) temporal tresspass you mentioned is one of the best but don't sleep on temporal mastery with that 2 mana miracle cost and with sensei top you are garantied to have it . Fun times for you not the opponants 😏.

    My Yuriko deck is a mix of all 3. I run scroll rack and ways to manipulate the top. I use unblockable states to ninjutsu my ninjas in to trigger yuriko multiple times. My favorite card to check is dracho with spells like brainstorm or scroll rack to put back on top to burn my friends for 16 multiple times

    The biggest reason to run Cunning Evasion and Grazilaxx is this:
    You attack with a ninja and an unblockable creature. They block the ninja and you respond by returning to hand, then ninjitsu with the unblockable. Yuriko had this effect sort of built-in, because if a blocker kills her she can bounce to command zone then ninjitsu back in over any unblocked creatures.
    I know this is an older video but I think a lot of people miss this

  • @Ian_Dierks
    @Ian_Dierks Před 3 lety

    For mine, I started out with ninja tribal and slowly upgraded the power level. Now it’s pretty competitive with cheap unblockables, bounce effects, top deck manipulation, counterspells and extra turns. Ironically, it can be better the keep the overall cmc really low in order to keep up the constant barrage as opposed to a bunch of big cmc spells.

  • @camrenbaltazar996
    @camrenbaltazar996 Před 3 lety

    I’m new to the game and I had to build a ninja deck. So I fairly finished it. The way I built it seems to be a small mix from all three topics with crystal ball and soothsaying for top deck manipulation with ninjas and big spells. Oh and changing my creature type in the deck with maskwood and other ways to change types and a small spice.

  • @gianlucadostuni758
    @gianlucadostuni758 Před 3 lety +1

    I love Yuriko, mostly 'cause I love Kamigawa. Built her with Ninjas/Rogues theft sinergy. Top deck manipulation only if there's some other utility, such as in Seer's Lantern or Connive//Concoct.

  • @alasbruta
    @alasbruta Před 3 lety +2

    Actually you want a balanced mix of all three strategies: evasive 0 or 1 drops, efficient ninjas and topdeck manipulation for big burns like extra turns and such.

  • @PigeonSmythe
    @PigeonSmythe Před 3 lety

    Cheap fast creatures with some form of evasion are essential for delivery - Nether Traitor is amazing for this as is reckless imp (always dash it), ornithopter as you can always put it back in during second main. I run multiple split cards (for the total mana value), I quite like thalakos seer because when you ninja it out you get a card as well, dimir infiltrator, unblockable for ninjutsu and finds your scroll Rack if needed. Archfiend of Despair is brutal if you hit some high Ninja flips. I also run some stupid cards that aren’t really good enough like Djinn of wishes because with tons of top deck manipulation (top and lots of scry effects) you can get away with cheating some major spells in. I don’t run too many of the weaker Ninjas, some aren’t good enough to justify the deck slot or even some where the ability is awesome but the ability is prohibitively high costed i eventually dropped them.

    @DylanCEdh Před 3 lety +2

    Not sure if the video mentions it, but if you have a ways to return Yuriko to your hand, that’s almost a must have because once she hits the field, there’s no way she’ll be getting through unless you have a universal way to make creatures unblockable

    Do note that Thassa and other cards that scry on upkeep don't help because you'll then draw that card. Also, other mean spells to hit opponents for a lot of damage are split cards. Commit // Memory is a personal fav.

    Just a thing: does Path of Ancestry work if you use ninjutsu? I don't think so cause you're not casting, right?

    • @clint6716
      @clint6716 Před 3 lety +1

      Ninjutsu does not trigger Path of Ancestry. Ninjutsu is an activated ability that allows you to "place" a permanent onto the battlefield, and does not count as casting that permanent from your hand.
