This video is part 2 in a 2-part series. Part 1 was how to make dowels using a jig ( • Woodworking: How to ma... ) and this video is about making your own dowel centers.
Dowel centers are used to transfer dowel locations to joining boards so that you know where to drill your holes. There's not much to them, but they're crucial when it comes to using dowel joinery!
There's a nifty trick demonstrated in this video that shows how to drill in exactly the center of a dowel. This technique can be used for a variety of thing like making wooden washers, bushings, spacers, etc.
    Thanks for watching!

I was totally wondering how you were going to center the pins… but the idea you had about the drill press was so smart! I don't think that would ever have crossed my mind, but it was such a great idea.

Thanks, Doug! They may not be pretty, but they work perfectly too. I think if I was even a little bit off center that they probably wouldn't work right but that centering idea with the drill press seemed to work out for me.

Loved the inverted bit idea. I did it differently for an old project (in the 80s). I drilled a 10 mm hole in the wood anchored to the base of the drill. I put the 10 mm dowel pieces in that hole and used a small bit to make the centered hole. It worked perfectly. The prototype won a third place in a furniture design contest. The prize was a fine watch that I gave to the only woman for whom I cried in my life, but that's another story. Perhaps, if I had used the idea of the inverted drill, I would have won the contest. lol

if you wanted to avoid chuck marks on the dowel you could drill a hole the size of the dowel and leave the drill bit in the chuck. if you're able to put the hole clear through the table you could also choke up on the dowel to avoid stickout, if you're working with a longer workpiece

I have a slight variation that allows a larger diameter dowel. Use a Forstner bit to drill a hole in clamped scrap, place dowel in the hole, then drill into the dowel (without adjusting anything but the active bit). It can be used to make either a bushing to use your existing doweling centers or for a nail or similar to be placed into the dowel.

I am just really new to this stuff and have just a few hand tools and a drill so I have to think different from you guys with all your fancy equipment. But it seems to me that the same thing could be accomplished by marking your 2 pre-drill holes on board A, pound in 2 tiny brads, snip the heads off, pry up and reinsert the brads with the pointy tip on top, press against board B, and then you have your matching drill points. Pre-drill boards A and B and proceed as normal. I have been trying a million different ways including glueing graph paper onto the board, but the nail brads are the simpliest and one can do it without any equipment except a ruler and some cutters to snip the heads. If I had a grinder one could just grind down the nail head edges. But it seems to me that what you really want to end up with is two sets of pin pricks that match up so then you can pre-drill and drill. Fluted dowel pins are somewhat forgiving, too

Drill through your clamped board with a bit the size of your dowel (over the hole in the deck). Chuck up the size bit you want to drill and slide the dowel up through the board from below. Can do much longer dowels that way.

I can accept not wanting to buy a 6 dollar set of dowel centers, but why don't you just glue up your dowels and flanges first? Flanges don't need to be dead center.
And then drill through a clamped board with a bit the size of the dowel, change bits, drop your centers one at a time into the board, and drill the nail holes. It'll be faster and more precise.
