    My wife needed some new planters for around the house so I set out to design 4 of the easiest DIY planters there are! What makes them so simple is that I designed them to work with the "actual" dimensions of ordinary construction-grade lumber so there's no lumber milling required and a very limited set of tools needed. There’s a large raised bed, a tri-level corner planter, a standalone planter with a trellis, and one that will straddle a railing. Super easy pocket-hole construction and they look fantastic! These are PERFECT for the beginner or for the DIYer that's looking to make a little money with a side hustle by selling some easy-to-make planters. Plans to make them are on my website and are ONLY $5! www.fishersshoponline.com
    SPONSOR: www.kregtool.com
    Thanks to Kreg for making, hands-down, the BEST pocket hole jig there is.
    This thing is an absolute MUST for any woodworker.

It makes me feel like I'm not alone with mishaps that occur in the shop! Did you put your SawStop on bypass to rip that pressure treated lumber? Pocket holes are fine, but slow and visible. I've designed, built, and sold a lot of planter boxes. Galvanized staples, waterproof PVA glue, and cedar produces the cleanest looking and most durable boxes for the same cost (or less).

    • @FishersShop
      @FishersShop  Před 3 dny

      Not sure why you think they're slow or visible. I assembled these planters in no time and all the holes are hidden (except for the last one which got filled). I think I'd prefer using pocket holes over staples, but that's just me. But I do agree that cedar would have looked WAY nicer.

    • @cedartreeworkshop
      @cedartreeworkshop Před 3 dny

      @@FishersShopPocket hole joinery is a good balance of speed and aesthetics. Very accessible to new woodworkers, too. It just doesn’t scale well for this type of project. I can bust out a 36” x16” box in 20 minutes from pre-cut pieces with staples and glue, whereas it would take me probably twice that with pocket holes. It’s all good - I really like how you made this project something that anyone can do (you’re very good at that).

    Nice looking planters. Be careful though, the Blue Kreg screws are not rated for wood treated with ACQ (Alkaline copper quaternary) and all the local treated wood uses that. It will destroy the screws in a few years. Use stainless steel if you can find ones that have the washer head.

    Just a warning about PT lumber on your cast iron table saw - it will corrode the surface VERY quickly. Even chips and dust. Be careful not to leave any lying on the cast iron part for very long. Ask me how I know :(

  • @willwitner121
    @willwitner121 Před 3 dny

    Okay, I know this was sponsored by Kreg, but I don’t think you needed to screw down every slat with pocket screws. That’s like $100 in pocket screws! Also surprised Kreg wouldn’t pay for the cedar. Pressure treated is not something I’d run my nice saw blades through. I love your channel, but this one felt like a reach. Also, no unnecessary walnut and not one flathead screw!

    • @FishersShop
      @FishersShop  Před 9 hodinami

      lol, it's not $100 in screws. The tri-level planter was $16 for all 212 screws that I used. And yeah... maybe you could get away with fewer, but I had them so I used them. I didn't ask Kreg to pay for any of the materials, I chose and bought all of that myself, including the screws. I could have spent more and gotten cedar but one of my objectives was to demonstrate how affordable building these planters can be.

    Love the planters, but you shouldn't use treated if you're going to plant food plants in them. The chemicals can leach out and get in your taters. Nobody wants that.
