In an age when brands upgrade products in relatively small increments, real technical innovation is quite a rare beast. There is, however, one image-maker's tool that’s pretty much remained the same since year dot; the step-up ring. Well no longer, as we get hands-on to test a definitive technical revolution - the REVORING from H&Y Filters.
So what is the REVORING? Well, basically, it's an advanced, adjustable step-up ring that enables you to attach to various sized lenses, thanks to a retracting diaphragm with blades that lock onto the thread of your lenses. The sprung mechanism grips onto the lens giving a firm grasp, preventing it from coming loose. It's so strong, that in our testing, we actually ended up casually carrying the camera by the REVORING. Probably not a great idea, but never once did it feel like it would lose its grip.
We’ve been lucky enough to have been involved in creating some content for the launch of the new Kickstarter campaign for the REVORING by H&Y Filters. The exclusive access we've enjoyed has given us the opportunity to really get to understand just what the REVORING has to offer.
When we were first introduced to the REVORING, the line that was muttered amongst the team the most was “why hasn’t this been done before?”
After using this product for even a small amount of time, the prospect of going back to using traditional step-rings honestly fills me with dread! The slim design of the Revoring means you can use them on wide-angle lenses. In our testing, we found some brands of VND filters would cause some mild vignetting at 16mm but after a slight 1-2mm adjustment, the issue was easily resolved.
The Revoring will be available in 2 different models at 4 different sizes variations. The 37-49mm, 46-62mm and the 67-82mm and with a Kickstarter stretch goal which will unlock an 82-95mm version. These REVORINGS cover the diameters mentioned in their name.
Perhaps the biggest news in this new Kickstarter campaign is the second model. The REVORING with built-in variable ND and circular polariser will be offered in the same sizes only and the variable goes all the way from ND - ND3-1000. Yes, that’s right. Did we hear your wallet just let out a sigh of relief?
With the REVORING's VND CPL offering a neutral density range of ND3 to ND1000, this equates to a minimum of 1.5, through to 10 stops of light control. However, due to the vast range, the stops achieved will vary based on different focal distances. One other great feature about the Revoring is you can use the CPL VND on wide-angle lenses up to 16mm with no vignetting. On the side of the REVORING, there is a ‘W’ which stands for wide. This is the limit for wide-angle lenses. Going past this point will cause you to get the cross pattern which can be found on very powerful variable ND filters. We found when not using wide-angle lenses its best to dial up the ND to the Max point then slowly wind it down till the crossing disappears.
The Revoring from H&Y Filters could truly change the way we go about purchasing filters forever and if you like what you hear so far check out our review [below] then head over to the campaign page on Kickstarter to grab yourself a fantastic deal before they go to retail after the 8th August 2020.

Hello, great review. Maybe you could help me. I cannot seem to find this answer anywhere else. Is it possible to attach another filter like a 82mm pro mist on top of the 67-82 REVORING VND CPL model? Does it have threads there?

Photo colleagues, I want to share my experience with you in case you are thinking of buying it, of non existing support from H&Y as well as bad experimental design.
    1. The Lock mechanism is unusable and will not stay firmly, it not secure and will suddenly fall , like it happened to me, and I ensured it's very firm when attached. Did attach by instructions. The filter actually never "locks". It's just get tightened and then again loosens and rotates again, that's how it's built. Not like regular filter that you screw and you know you are at the end and it's secure. Not the case here. Especially if you rotate the ND pin in other direction to the one screwed the filter. Probably it will fall. It happened to me after screwing in on the lens and wasn't touching anything for an hour, then fall off by itself.
    2. The X shape pattern on ND is very visible and not usable after ND5-7. So , what's the point claiming of 10 stops and when from ND 7 it's not usable.

    3. There are no markings on ND after ND 5 to 10 ND , so you have to guess.
    4. There is grainy pattern when using ND/CPL, compared to my other filters I own(Haida, Tiffen, Hoya). It seems not as clean on the sky.
    5. The support is non existent. Will not honor warranty. Will accuse you and say that it's your human error, no matter what.
    6. The rings ND and CPL are close together, so it's not that easy to control one without touching the other one. See how it's built.
Their "test" to show that you did wrong is to put the filter static on lens for 24 hours, but it's not happening in reality. The filter pins are intended to be touched to control ND and CPL, and no one puts it for 24 in static position. You move with the camera. Do you use your filters putting it in one sport static for 24 hours? I'm not, at least in real world scenario. You are moving sometimes.
The pins to control ND and CPL where supposed to be touched, to control ND and CPL, but every slight touch can lock out and drop the filter . Not secure filter system at all.
The company did not honor the warranty and didn't want to fix the filter within the first month of use. Shitty company. I was securing and fitting to lens strictly by instructions. Will not buy again from H&Y.
I will continue to use my regular, non variable ND's and CPL's from more true photography companies I own. Never to H&Y again. They are for making money I think, not into a photography really. Lack of basic support is bad.
Their boorishness to my support request is unacceptable, saying to me that I'm saying nonsense and accusing of wrong use, without knowing that for sure. Just a trash H&Y company in my opinion.
Useless filter, experimental design that I think is not mature yet, the VND is not usable from ND7, non existent support, I think it's enough for me.

nice video. I have a question. The filter they use is the "H&Y ND3-ND1000 Vario-Filter (HD MRC) with Polarizing Filter" right? So a slightly older filter. Could you test the filter performance? Like color rendition on different darkening stages, uniform darkening across all stages, apearing of the X-Pattern and so on? I am in search of a good vnd and was looking at the freewell vnd´s because of their good non-color shift performance. Then I saw this filter but I cant find a detailed review of the "H&Y ND3-ND1000 Vario-Filter (HD MRC) with Polarizing Filter".

I'm considering getting Tiffen 1/8 black pro mist and then putting Revoring VND on top of that. Do you think it's a good idea?

Here’s what I don’t understand I have a Canon 50 mm lens I bought the ring that fits that range but it doesn’t fit and if its already at max when you get it i don’t understand why its still not large enough to fit over it

Great review, this product can be really useful and time saving, but real question is, how many real stops You can go down when using with wide lens like 17mm?

Does the RevoRing with the built-in VND+CPL allow you to remove the filter so it can act purely as a step-up ring?

    • @PhotoBiteUK
      @PhotoBiteUK  Před 4 lety +1

No the VND+CPL is built into the Revoring CPL+VND but you can opt for the Revoring that doesn’t have any filters fitted. How that helps! Luke :)
