Lt. Col. Dave Grossman (retired) is the author of a dozen books including best seller 'On Killing' and 'On Combat', dealing with the psychological effects of killing and war on soldiers. Grossman was a Professor of Psychology at West Point, a former infantryman, paratrooper, and graduate of the Army's Ranger School. Grossman stands alongside men such as Massad Ayoob, Jeff Cooper, and John Farnham, as a person who has begun conversations and helped laid the groundwork that the modern science of lethal force encounters rests on. Grossman is also known for his popularizing of the term 'sheepdog' referring to protectors. He also tackles controversial subjects such as video games.

I'd love to hear Dave say "hi I'm Troy McClure, you may remember me from such books as on killing and why mommy Carries a Gun"
Lol. Reality is wild, man.
I heard him speak, 2 hours went by like a flash. Thanks John for sitting down w him
John what a great quote! "Killing would be a very loving thing to do". This is what so many don't understand. It's not a need for violence but a need to defend.
+Jason Barnett I'm feeling good....
After watching the Grossman interview, you chose MY quote?!? Yep, feeling good!
Jason Barnett I couldn't agree more. I don't WANT kill anyone. I also don't want to die or see innocents killed.
Coeneo Michigan Mexico
This is the reason why being a PJ is so appealing, and being around people who see a standard and raise it. People you can look to your left nod and they know you'd die for them.
Skye Fochler Until you ETS turn you realize that “brotherhood” means nothing
He's one of the founders of what we do for sure.
Mrgunsngear Channel , I could watch him be interviewed for hours. Much respect to you, John, and the heroes like Ret. Lt, Colonel Grossman. God bless you all and may you live forever.

That's damn right. I read his books before Boot Camp in San Diego
Still feel the same way about this guy? Kinda sad
@@MiguelHernandez-oi3fi Yes.
Lt. Grossman. He has come a long way from Santa Rosa Island where we conducted our final mission in June of 1979. He must have had corrective eye surgery or is wearing contacts. His hair has grown out as most of our hair has since then. I wonder how long he kept the Vette' his girlfriend/fiancee/wife had at graduation. I wonder if he had to sign a statement of charges on the LCE he was wearing that I broke when I grabbed his 203 that was dummy corded to it as I was trying to drag him off the objective. He wasn't a "casualty", he had just froze in his tracks and the RI was looking at me like "what are you going to do now PL?" as he proceeded to pull an arty sim out of his ammo pouch. Fond memories. I actually tried to contact him thru his business when he was giving a talk in Raleigh or Chapel Hill at few years back. I never received a response either from his business or him personally. I have read his books and I did find them interesting and informative. The thing that I found most interesting was the change from the worm mentality he displayed during Ranger School to the entrepreneur he has become these days. Funny how only select memories are retained from Ranger School by any that has attended and the ones that remain are the most vivid.
Love Dave have his talk on cassette tape that's how long I've been listening to the Col. great man thank you Col
I suggest if your not a patron yet go be one and finish the rest of the interview well worth it.
Can't wait to see the rest of this. Great stuff...
Sounds like you said you just met Jeff Cooper at the NRA show, I knew you were on a higher level than the rest of us.
+Shane K I know! Oops. Weird wording
When they were talking about hold your position reminded me of a great quote. “Don’t run to your death.” Navy SEAL quote used by David “Rut” Rutherford.
Stand your ground.
I've read both his books! Really great reading!! Awesome interview John!
Ordered both! Thank you. Keep up the good videos!
The man looks like he must have had some of the spiciest, greasiest Mexican food ever created an hour before filming.
He is working through the horrors he has seen first hand. Horrors most people would not survive.
@@davewolf8869 If you are talking about Dave Grossman, he has never seen combat or has ever taken a human life.
Dan walker talks a good game though
Hahahahaha funny

...wow, great interview...some really interesting insights, look forward to more...well done!
Love the channel but I don't have a high opinion of this man. He has and to my knowledge still trains everyday regular police to take on a warrior, kill mindset. Love you though John
GEEEEESUS ToT it is him for real! On combat is the book that made me quit my day job and pursue a carrera in martial arts, self defense and teaching. It change my mind completely!!
Great interview!
Is it just me, or does Grossman sound almost identical in both voice and delivery to Ted Nugent? 😂😂
Dave is Ted’s fraternal twin brother. 🤣
This video seems so much more relevant now than it was a few months ago. Great stuff. Would love to hear the segments that didn't make the cut.
Attended his class "The Bulletproof Mind" years ago. Still the best class I have ever attended in Law Enforcement...
Do you enjoy killing?
Holy cow. You met and interviewed Dave Grossman! You are a somebody now. You have arrived! Dave is THE man, and a gift from God to our LEO, military, and any other sheep dog out there. Thanks
This guy has no business training police on public dime. Religious fanatic responsible for militarizing public servants in a war against Peele and civil liberties.

well played sir :-). I appreciate what you bring to my life through your channel. I donated!
Thanks again brother and keep it coming!
This guy played Postal. He is now my hero
I read On Combat and On Killing while I was deployed. Outstanding reading!
Great interview. I think it's worth making this a playlist on your channel site.
Great interview John, loved it.
Awesome. Love his books. Thanks John.
Man, I love your videos!
This Chanel has quickly become my favourite by far in this community, keep doing great work!
VA lady recommended his book "on killing" to help me deal with some of the stuff I did during my deployments. Good reading.
Excellent
I love the warrior's mindset.
I'm 23 and I read on killing and on combat both when I was 18 years old john and it changed my life since than. Dave Grossman is a legend in the warrior community and has helped me become of a higher degree of men in which we all need to strive to raise our future warriors. the biggest mistake we can make is lower the standard and volume of information and knowledge that gets passed down through generations. We would be failing our son's. so dont let youtube win . Love the videos john. let's keep fighting the "good fight" because all it takes for evil to succeed is to for good men to do nothing.
p.s. I just finished reading " the roots of war and terror" by Dr. Anthony Stevens, great book to support Dave grossman. Any thoughts john?
So young. Changed your life? Unless the book is the Bible or the man is Jesus....If a book or a man can so easily change you... your heart, your mind or your life is unfulfilling or they're weak.
Daren Garcia Perhaps you haven’t considered that you might be the weak one Daren. It sounds like you’re shutting yourself off to multiple other sources of information and experiences, which could very well help, or even ‘save’, you one day. However, in your specific case, because you’re walking a very narrow minded path you will miss out on many great opportunities, but the good thing is, you’ll only ever have yourself to blame for your weak mind, weak heart and overall, weak life. You’re missing the ‘dog’ in your ‘sheepdog’. Carry on.
Went to one of his Seminars in Columbia MO. Outstanding speaker and motivator.
Kudos, men! Thank you John for the interview and the content. I've been a subscriber for a few months now and I think what you do and stand for I of great substance and value. JUST set down my copy of On Combat and saw THIS! I have read On Killing and before this video was over purchased Assassination Generation on Audible. Cheers and thanks again.
"ON KILLING" was with me on the the C-17 en-route to Afghanistan.
great video, training and getting yourself mentally prepared before hand is essential for developing the will to survive by means of stopping or killing the threat.
If you haven’t purchased Col. Grossman’s books “On Killing” and “On Combat” you are not fully informed or educated. I hosted Col. Dave several times at LETOA in Wisconsin and his presentations are not to be missed. I brought my wife to one of his presentations and she came away with getting her concealed carry permit, and actually carrying in church as a deacon. Get his audiobooks because he does his own narration!
Awesome Col. Dave!!!!
Have to thank you for introducing Lt.col. Grossman. Thank you.
Sheepdog? People like to throw that term around but they really don't know much about sheepdogs.
A sheepdog's primary purpose is to control the sheep, timid bleating animals, through fear and intimidation. The sheepdog forces the flock to move or stay based on the desires of the shepherd, their masters.
We often hear the police describing themselves as sheepdogs and that may be close to the truth since our elected officials want to control us and use the police to do so using fear and intimidation.
I, for one, don't like the idea of sheepdogs in society.
Yeah, not a great analogy. At a surface level, they see a guardian protecting the flock from the wolves. In this interpretation, it makes more sense.
All analogies fall apart if they are taken to literally. Its best to see how Dave interpreted the relationship between the sheepdog and the flock.
@@cameronm.511 I'm sure that the police officers who call themselves "sheepdogs" mean it in the kindest sense. But let's look at what police really do.
They don't protect you and they don't protect me. The Supreme Court has said that they have no obligation to protect a private citizen. In most cases, they only show up after a crime has happened and try to catch the bad guy if there is enough glory in it.
However, what police excell at is getting your and me to toe the line and obey our political masters. I'm not talking about quelling riots although we have seen that the sheepdogs will stand down and let the wolves in when so instructed.
When I talk about toeing the line, I mean all the stupid and arbitrary rules that politicians create. No church but you can fly. No beer without food during the pandemic. Don't build a deck without permission.
I talk about "glory" because unless life and limb are at risk cops don't want to get involved. No glory. A drunk hit my parked car, I knew where the drunk had gone, I had his license plate but the cop who responded by calling me said "I'll follow up in the morning." Well, the guy left not to be found and I was stuck with $3k in damages to my car.
A mover stole my daughter's cell phone. I knew who took it and precisely where the phone was. The police didn't give a crap. I was told, that's not big enough to get involved but they'll go running when Target calls about a $5 shoplifter.
Yeah, they're sheepdogs. Controlling us for their masters.
I have been asked before whether I could actually take a life. I consider myself a responsible armed citizen & I try to train as mush as possible. But my reply, and possible wrong, is "I don't know".
In the town I live in I'm a firefighter & I think back to my first working house fire. The sound of the sirens, the lights & me getting my gear on come rushing back. I remember asking myself "Am I going to be able to do this?". Can I bring myself to go into a burning house & do my job? Am I willing to lay it all down for someone else? I remember questioning those thoughts even while riding on the engine to the call. My honest answer was "I don't know". But! I'm about to find out. Now 16 years later I have no problem doing my job. I have a healthy dose of fear to keep me focused though.
As someone who does not have a military or LEO background I have to answer "I don't know if I could take a life". But I'm willing to prepare & train for that instance because I do love my family. But I also question this because Mr. Grossman brings up a good point about humans being wired to defend loved ones.
John or Dave I would love your feedback. Maybe I'm not in the right mindset or maybe I am. Thanks for what you both do! John really love the God & gunfighting videos. Look forward to more interviews!
I think you are in the right mindset. Not arrogant yet also, not hesitant. As the saying goes, you rise to your level of training. So that is the best you can do. Train and hold the tension of knowing what you're training for and why.
Yes, you absolutely can. As a fireman who risks his life to help people the instinct to end the active murderer (Not active shooter, they are a murderer) that instinct will be as high in you as to fight a fire. And good for you. We are the auxiliary protectors of society. I do not want to hurt any human being. But a human being harming other human beings who are not in active combat deserves to be harmed, lest they harm other human beings.
I don't know if I could take a life....I've always been a healer and caretaker
Excellent video.
I had the privilege of meeting Grossman in 2012 at the ALET academy in Sitka. Very intelligent and passionate guy.
What impresses me a lot about Lt. Col. Grossman is his brilliance and yet he comes across with such humility. What a great man and author who has been an inspiration and teacher to many.
What? At least now I know why the US is so fucked up. What dangerous morons. And that logo is pure Templer style. Are you 16 years old ? What is wrong with you people ? And Grossmann should see a doctor...damn this is beyond insane.....speechless....
@@MakeSomeNoiseAgencyPlaylists grossman hasn't killed anyone, and he hasn't been to war. so in effect, he ain't shit

I have his “Bulletproof mind” audio series from years ago. I keep it on my phone and listen to them from time to time. Keeps me in the right mindset. Unfortunately i have told some people about it but it doesn’t seem to be available for download anymore
I got to go to one of his one day training it was amazing! haven't been able to read his new book but his old ones are just a great read and would encourage anyone to read them.
love all your clips from South Africa
I got to hear Dr. Grossman speak at Madigan, on Ft. Lewis. AWESOME speaker, he signed my copy of "On Killing". That book answered a LOT of questions for me.
Having read Lt. Col. Grossman's " On Killing " many years ago I was fascinated, and a bit troubled, to recognize the truth of his position on the matter of ordinary citizens being reluctant to press the trigger at the moment of truth. He aptly describes our inherent reluctance to kill, and how we can learn to come to terms with it. I often describe this to those who inquire about it, and tell them that once they are familiar with the use of force statutes in their State, that they have a God given right to protect themselves and family. This isn't about killing without provocation, it's about taking a life to save others.
John did you get in on the confirmed kill rush?
What's hard is not being able to move forward because you cannot go back. When 18 months of your past is the greatest time in your life. It's hard to enjoy normal.
You cannot live those times again, yet, but you can enjoy what civilians do, and you can take some meaning from it. But not all. You must struggle with the rest. That is the price of being a soldier.
Great. I just finish reading Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper and I was looking for a new book to read.
An interview that everyone should watch.
Sat through one of Mr. Grossmans lectures several years ago in the KC area. Quickest eight hours and best $100 I ever spent.
Best interview yet!
Wish I would have had the opportunity to meet you at the NRA show, John. Thank you for doing this video. I recently picked up his book, On Killing, just need to devote the time to reading it. It is currently occupying my "queue" area of my nightstand. Thanks.
I would've liked to have run into you too
Wonderful.
John....I love ya but....you drift so often bro. Whether its a Special Forces Medic, Grossman, people that write in questions or someone in the crowd that distracts you... it always turns back to you. Pay attention to your guest, let them speak. Share the spotlight and the time. God help me I have the same issues....it helps when people are honest though. Do we really listen or are we just waiting to talk. I'm so guilty! Take it in or get angry...Take this as you wish. I love your stuff! You've got a long list of ass-kissers, however: honesty is true respect.
"I might not be much, but I'm all I think about." lol
Nothing wrong here. Your giving ng him free advice. Your using the comment section how it's supposed to be used honestly, and it is the interviewers responsibility to ask and then LISTEN. Great comment.

I commented a few weeks ago on the "T"ruth vs "t"ruth and I hope my comments weren't read as anything mean/trolling, just as another view point. I hosted Col Grossman a few years ago through our PD. Got the money donated so no officer had to pay to come see him speak. He was so awesome of course during the presentation but on a personal level as well. I got to just sit and talk with him before the presentation and during the breaks. Could not ask to hang out with a nicer guy for a day. He is very humble and treats you like YOU are a big deal. I hope to have him back someday soon.
I will be staying out of your town. He’s a major problem with police in America. Total psychopath. You are to protect and serve. The bill of rights is your boss, don’t forget it and remember you work for the people, not the politicians.
Awesome.
I read On Killing years ago. I never imagined that soldiers would be reluctant to kill the enemy. Some war veterans admitted to shooting over the enemies heads because they just didn't want to kill anyone. The book is a fascinating look into the psychology of warfare.
It has always interested me, not having ever been put in that situation myself. I'm sure there has been a cultural shift over the years that has changed man's view on killing other men. After the battle at Gettysburg I think it was, some of the rifles recovered from the battlefield had been loaded 3 or 4 times and never shot. This could be a sign of confusion on the battlefield or perhaps a sign that some men, who were very religious at that time, had trouble actually killing someone. One of my cousins served as a sniper in Afghanistan and came back with several medals. He was raised in a strict Catholic household and attended church on a regular basis. His father told me that he had 'seen a bunch of stuff'. He has PTSD now and I haven't asked him about anything he experienced. I hope all you guys coming back from this shit have the support you need.
Meh 👍

"On Killing" excellent book - I read it because my son, who is a Raider, had requested it and when a parent sees a title like that....your curiosity is peaked. It was illuminating and helps to understand so much of what goes on in the military as well as civilian life.....
Grossman is an exceptional speaker and educator.
Dang it! I wish I would've seen you there! It was my first time.
Just found your channel John, and I’m on a long roll tonight watching. Excellent content! This interview with a true legend was a real treat, thanks for making this video!
I was fortunate enough to see LTC Grossman at Fort Lewis in 96. He performed a tremendous rendition of Shakespeare's Henry V Saint Crispin's Day speech, then shot me with a squirt gun. Most memorable speaker I've ever listened to. Brilliant man.
I had LEO for a number of years. Had an situation where I had to hold an armed civilian at gunpoint until backup arrived. 2/3 of me was in the here and now. The other third was five seconds ahead. In my mind I could see the individual produce a weapon and attempt to discharge it at me, but (again, in my mind) I was well ahead of him. I could feel my weapon discharge, see the 45 ACP leave the barrel in slow motion, arc out and strike the suspect. After it was over, I spoke to my Sargent. Told him it concerned me how easy it would have bee to kill the guy. He replied not to be afraid of my instincts and response. He said some train for years, and.never get to the point where they could coldly, ruthlessly, and without hesitation, take the life of someone who was a deadly threat to me or others. He stated to treasure it, as it was an response that very well could keep me alive in a deadly force encounter. All just a matter of perspective. It was amazing how time seems to crawl in a situation like that. Basically I got well inside the suspect's OODA loop.
Thank you both for your services, Sirs!
