    a24 is by far one of the heaviest and bravest productions. They aren’t afraid to make risks but, that doesn’t mean all movies are great. I always appreciate your reviews :)

    • @raul_g_f__
      @raul_g_f__ Před 2 lety +29

      That's why I love A24. Not bc I think they r always good but bc they take risks and r little by little bringing auteur and indi cinema to the mainstream scene with good productions at a technical level. When I say I like A24, pple assume Im the typical person that defends them as a whole but nope, I also think they've produced bad films, and that's ok :)

    • @KestellPlanet
      @KestellPlanet Před 2 lety +50

      This! Like, on this surface I know it’s so stupid and nonsensical (because, I mean, a dude gets turned into a walrus), but the whole movie is extremely disturbing to me in a way that a lot of other movies aren’t. The end scene where his friends visit him in the zoo and the walrus man just screams and screams while his friends walk away is one of the worst scenes I’ve seen in horror. Not to mention that the walrus man himself is really hard to look at for me. I’ve only seen a few scenes of the movie, but I will never watch the full thing because it freaks me out so much, lol.

      @@KestellPlanet Same, I’ve watched Hereditary which definitely affected me, but not in the way that it seemed to everyone else. Tusk on the other hand, ludicrous & impossible as it is, chills me to the bone. (I too have only seen clips, I’d never ever watch it).

      Yes! So true! It’s funny I was reminded of one of the reasons I love my husband so much because he watched tusk, loved it SO much, then made me watch it again with him. Sat through the entire thing again a day after he watched it. 45 minutes in I was like “what the fuuu…” and looked over at him with this huge grin on his face just loving it. He has such awesome and unique taste so I trusted him, and it was a damn ride

      This is the first I'm hearing of Tusk, and this is an incredibly obvious comparison and might even be a direct homage, but it immediately made me think of Kafka's Metamorphosis. I remember some people in high school thinking it was goofy, but the absurdity of the situation is what is so terrifying. The characters witnessing the transformation and the audience are in the same position, and have the same kinds of extreme reactions.

    My second favorite, however is Eighth Grade, which I would consider as horror adjacent just because of how goddamn uncomfortable it makes me, it instantly transports you to middle school, and every terrible experience you've had there.
    Bo Burnham is really good at just destroying you with deep emotional reactions.

    • @partycitydumpster
      @partycitydumpster Před 2 lety +3

      I watched the original, then the directors cut, then the original again, so I'm pretty confident in saying I like the original better. I think the pacing holds you in suspense exquisitely, and the meandering in the directors cut allows you to get your bearings (ha) a bit too much which detracts from the overall experience imo. And Christian's shittiness started to feel a little heavy-handed in the added scenes iirc.
      But it's possible I need to give the directors cut another try because these are relatively subtle differences and might have just been my mood at the time.

    There at the end you really nailed why I like Blumhouse movies more than A24. It's not that they're better movies; by and large, they really aren't. It's just that they satisfy that desire for entertainment I have more than A24 does. Complex thrilled-horror with nuanced visuals and themes has its place... but sometimes (most of the time) when I'm watching a movie to unwind, I just don't want it to get that deep and layered.

    You should definitely watch Midsommar directors cut soon!! I also have it, and it made the movie even better than it already was (in my opinion of course). Without spoilers, the extra and extended scenes add a lot more context, especially with Christian and some of his motivation. The extra scenes are also cool, including one that’s during the night! I rewatched Blackcoats Daughter for the first time in years this past winter (I live in Minnesota so we get winter for like 5 months lol) and I watched it on a cold snowy night with a candle in the background and lights off and it really made that movie more atmospheric and really added to it!

      I personally prefer the ambiguity between Dani and Christian in the theatrical cut and how we get to figure their relationship out on our own but I definitely agree that seeing more scenes with them together is quite effective and gives us a more in-depth look into Christian as a character. And I think the scene at the river in the directors cut is a really cool way of showing what the communion think of Dani but I still prefer it being less easy to figure out like it is in the theatrical version.

    I really like horror movies that invite me to turn toward difficult affective experiences. I think the a24 movies are great but they don't necessarily scare me. They leave me feeling disquieted or malaise. For example, I really experienced a sense of dread and malaise after watching St. Maude. It wrecked me. I also love Babadook because it's all about grief, depression, and motherhood. The beautiful thing about it, is that the protagonist experiences a sense of resolution when she is able to integrate the babadook into her affective experience rather than turning away from her grief. And midsummer, wow, it's disquieting because you see her boyfriend just really gaslighting her, and I could tell it was crazy-making for her.

    As an avid follower, someone who really values your opinion on horror and finds so much agreement with your lists... I implore you to watch Hereditary again... as soon as you can manage it. Watch it with a trusted support person, if it will help. There is SO much more on rewatches to delve into and unwrap, if you can do it. This more begs for multiple viewings as there is so much under the surface. Again, I do understand the emotional weight involved with very tense horror and how upsetting it can be.. the toll it can take. If you ever can conceive of watching it again, you will see an entire second layer.

    Hereditary is a beautifully crafted, meticulous movie, and probably the most effective horror that I’ve ever seen. That being said, I think I kind of agree with you (funny being that my name is also Sarah 😆). I only saw it once in theaters and have otherwise watched it broken up into scenes on CZcams because I have not been in a place since I saw it in theaters to sit down and put myself through that again. I usually have some sort of fun when I watch horror movies, as far as having fun from the adrenaline rush goes, but Hereditary actually made me cry and gave me an anxiety attack in theaters lol. I couldn’t handle the raw depiction of a family falling apart after tragedy because it hit too close to home for me. It was the first time that I personally was able to relate on a mental and emotional level with a horror movie and it was fucking taxing. So like I said, it was EXTREMELY effective in horrifying me, but not in the “I wanna keep watching this!” Way, in the “I’m horrified and exhausted and I want to go home and cry” kind of way 😅.

The random horror movie that is a sleeper but is amazing, gotta love them. They take my breath away! I will say that my BS meter on horror is a lot higher now than it's ever been and I think it's bc i've seen really great ones and don't want to waste 1.5 of time on the crappy ones. If i'm desperate for a horror fix I may venture out there but it's not often. I love Sarah's reviews and usually watch things she has suggested and sure there have been some where I was like meh but there have been a few I didn't know existed and were stellar.
      I expected a lot different then what Midsommar seemed to project as well. Don't get me wrong the cinematog and images were incredibly artistic and I loved it, just the story line fell flat for me and it was a dragged experience. Now Sarah does mention that it's a mind bender horror wise and I just didn't find that. I found it kind of similar to the JLAW Mother movie. Killing of a Sacred Deer was a giant time suck too but the thing I liked was how far that kid was willing to make Colin Farrell go. Artistically it wasn't the best film but there was a little glimmer in the story line for me!

    • @thecreatedvoid117
      @thecreatedvoid117 Před 2 lety +1

      @@SarahG1183 I 100% agree! I feel like I’m super picky about horror now, especially as of late. I mean the most recent one I liked, which I knew I was going to like due to the introduction of the character prior, was Terrifier. Don’t get me wrong, the movie itself is low budget and the acting is subpar, but his character is just so effective. Tbh, I can’t even think of a recent movie horror that really got me (Parasite was good but everyone has pretty much seen that by now). There are a few A24 horrors that I still need to check out though. I usually rely on finding b list horror lists via forums and CZcams and just going through them in hopes of finding at least one or two that I really enjoy. I’ve even gone down the rabbit hole of taboo horror films which, I don’t like the idea of doing, but it seems to be the point I have to be at in order to get anything out of said movie.
      What I would recommend is looking into foreign horror films, more specifically Japanese and Korean. I have yet to be completely disappointed by any that I’ve watched. Current Hollywood ones are usually trash but you can find some good independent films still made here.
      What was tough for me with Midsommer was just how unlikeable the characters were. I’ve heard people make the argument that that was the point…. but to me, that seems like a bad call. I actually think it could have been SO GOOD (setting, aspects of the cult, etc) but the storyline was, IMO, not a mind bender at all lol.
      I think with Killing of a Sacred Deer that what really turned me off of the movie was the script. Again, I’ve been told it was intentional but oml, I could not get past how terrible it was.
      For Sarah, I actually disagree with her in regards to her favorite era of horror being the 2000’s. Far from my favorite lol. A handful of movies she likes and dislikes are the opposite of me but I still love her videos and like to see someone else’s take and reasoning for their opinions.
      I am brain farting any recs right this moment (or trying to think of ones that you probably haven’t seen yet lol) but I’m going to brainstorm and get back to you! Is there a certain type of or era of horror that you like the most? That’d help guide me on any suggestions. :)

    • @SarahG1183
      @SarahG1183 Před 2 lety

      @@thecreatedvoid117 I couldn't get into Terrifier. I liked that Art the Clown was so distorted and essentially f'd with everyone in his path AND brutally! I'm not a big clown person. For example the new versions of IT are not scary for me. I like the old version with Tim Curry as Pennywise. Not as many teeth and seems pretty friendly but there's more of an eerie quality. The rabbit hole of taboo horror films is interesting. Some are just YUCK while others are mind benders and you can't look away. What A24's are you still having to watch? I am defo going to check out Japanese and Korean horror, I have watched a few and I haven't been disappointed and I have some in the "To Watch" cue.
      For your assessment of Midsommar, you hit the nail on the head for me. I COULD NOT STAND florence pugh's character. I get it her family died but she was just so annoying and then the people she went with were a bunch of dinguses. No mind bending for me either, just some weird shit happening at a cult setting. Even the imagery that would be disturbing wasn't that horrible in my opinion. Killing of a Sacred Deer - yes, there wasn't much to get excited about in that script that's for sure. Maybe the russian roulette at the end but like that's 15 mins, meaning there's 1.25 hours you have to get through.
      I have a really hard time picking a time period for best horror because I think there is overlap. I like some really old ones that are trusties in my collection and then there are some new ones that really boggled my mind and I wasn't able to figure out the ending so that gets a bonus mark. I do like a large portion from the 90s and 2000-2010. There's less in the present time for sure. What would your time period be? and what particular films?
      I'm a cinephile so I watch everything.... just please no CENTIPEDE! LOL! A couple movies i really liked that are taboo but not popularly known are: Midnight Meat Train, Loved Ones 2009 (aus horror), martyrs 2015 (french film), high tension 2003 (french film) and highly recommend the faces of death series. I also really liked Sarah's suggestion of the Abc's of death as well.
