Hello! The video explains very well the meaning of the song actually. Mahmood (real name Alessandro Mahmoud) was abandoned by his father when he was a child. That's basically the reason why there's a kid looking sad while his parents are arguing outside the car and also why the singer looks quite angry. Mahmood grew up with his mother (you can see a female figure carrying the little boy throughout the video). He has explained that "Soldi" (money) doesn't refer to specific money matters but shows how they can change relationships within a family. The Arabic sentence you hear near the end is a memory of something his father used to say to him. The last verse says "Yesterday you were here, where are you now, dad?" That's pretty much how the entire story is revealed. Hope this helps! 👍

For those who are interested in, here's the english-translated lyrics for "Soldi" (Money):
It’s very hot in the suburbs
Mum, don’t worry, I’m on my way home
You will be upset by a liar
It looked like love to you but it was
    something else
    He's drinking champagne during Ramadan
On the TV is airing Jackie Chan
He's smoking shisha and asks me how I’m
    doing
He asks me «How are you doing?» «How
    are you doing?» «How are you doing?»
You already know how things are going,
how things are going, how things are going.
I think faster trying to figure out
whether tomorrow you will fool me
I got no time to clear things up
'Cause now I realized what you are
    Being alive it’s not easy
    When you lose your pride
You leave home out of the blue
    You, tell me whether
You only thought about money, money
As if I have had any money, money
Tell me whether you miss me or you don’t
    give a damn
You used to ask me «How are you doing?»
    «How are you doing?» «How are you doing?»
Now how things are going, how things are
    going, how things are going?
You haven’t told yet what you had to tell
Betrayal is a bullet in the chest
Keep all your mercy to yourself
You keep lying at home but you know that
    she knows
(Sittin’) on a chair she’ll be asking me
You ask me «How are you doing?» «How
    are you doing?» «How are you doing?»
You already know how things are going,
how things are going, how things are going.
I think faster trying to figure out
whether tomorrow you will fool me
I got no time to clear things up
Because only now I found out what you are
    Being alive it’s not easy
    When you lose your pride
I figured it out in one second
    That you, from me
    You only wanted money, money
As if I have had any money, money
Before, you used to talk to me till late
You used to ask me «How are you doing?»
    «How are you doing?» «How are you doing?»
Now how things are going, how things are
    going, how things are going?
    «Waladi waladi habibi ta'aleena»
You used to tell me while playing, looking
    proud
«Waladi waladi habibi», it looked real
your wish, your wish to bring things back
    to what they were
    I - from you - didn’t want any money…
    Being alive it’s not easy
    When you lose your pride
You leave home out of the blue
    You, tell me if
    You only wanted money, money

    knowing
Yesterday you were here, where are you

Actually it goes beyond the upper layer meaning of the lyrics: he uses Arab and mentions drinking during Ramadan. Italy is going through an extremely socially tense historical period, where racial conflicts and xenophobia are raging. Second generation children and people with mixed Italian origins are going through difficult identity issues because of it.
He has mixed origins, but has grown up losing one part of his identity. Growing up in the suburbs with an Italian single mother. Feeling the loss of his father not only as an absence of a paternal figure, but also for a culture and existential bridge, which he needs in order to grow prideful and strong of an essential part of himself: the Arabic and muslim part. So his father's absence together with the negative memories left behind hurt him in more deep ways.Quote "I never wanted any money from you", meaning he didn't feel the need of economical support as much that of existential pride.
Being Italian but not only has not been easy in the last few years.

E gli esempi sono lampanti nel testo stesso, mangiare durante il ramadan o bere. Ed affermo che le sofferenze menzionate nella canzone, vanno oltre la materialita' del soldo. I have the feeling Italy will never win ESC again because we sing in Italian and maybe translate the chorus into English but this cannot really work since the two languages have a completely different rhythm...
having said that "Soldi" has had a huge resonance and success in many countries so ... winning Eurovision would be just the icing on the cake in my opinion.... but I strongly prefer the cake like for "Volare" ... it only came in 3rd in Eurovision... but it still is a well-known song after over 50 years...

Mahmood is half-Italian (maternally) and half-Egyptian (paternally). The song is about the absence of his dad in his childhood, whom he accuses of being solely interested in his money (soldi means money in Italian). So, it's an emotional song with a meaning.
This is the real translation, the one they sent you unfortunately are 2 texts of 2 songs together, and different singers, practically a mix.

@@mrmenno true. But compare it to the respectful silence you had while listening to the French contestant ( btw: I agree he made a wonderful song and the staging was even more beautiful!). I did not mean it in a nasty way, I just meant that if you watch it carefully, you imagine Mahmood is talking about an estranged father and a painful childhood.
      Peace!
( I am watching all your reactions, they are great)

Dawn E. It’s quite interesting doing these reaction vids. They’re really just a first impression of a song, so I don’t read up on them beforehand so my reaction is ‘fresh’. But then afterwards you find out so much more and it changes how you relate to the song. With Soldi it raised quite a few questions, language barrier has a lot to do with that. I’m glad he did so well coming second! Bilal’s song just hit me instantly. I’m working a few vid ideas where I delve more into the meaning of the songs and their perspective on e.g. self confidence, overcoming obstacles etc. So I’d research them more, they wouldn’t be reaction vids as such, more video ‘essays’ if you like. If there’s one you’d like to recommend, let me know 😉
