    Number 1 will always have the mighty Ford 300. This engine was used in just about everything industrial generators, (what it was specifically designed for) backhoes, forklifts, farm tractors, Harlan trucks (used to move air planes and luggage around air ports) etc. Had the longest vehicle production run 1965-1996. The first gas million mile engine, they don’t like to die no matter how much they are neglected, and will run on just 1 cylinder. And are still being used in various industrial equipment today. Nothing more reliable out there.

      The 300 Inline 6 was one of the most solid engines ever built, hands down. Good reliable power, a little thirsty, but what do you expect when you have 6 50 cubic inch cylinders. I fully agree there, and there is so much potential for power in them too.

  • @TimberWolf429
    @TimberWolf429 Před 2 lety +32

    I honestly think that all OBS Ford Trucks would be great to pick up. From the 300 inline 6, to the 460 big block, and both the 7.3L IDI, and Powerstroke, they had some of the greatest engines available. Mix that with their strong, yet simple chassis, and they really are a long lasting , and soon to be collectable truck in my direct opinion.

      @TimberWolf429 Před rokem

      @@albertoacosta6788 I have personally had all of the engine options for an OBS aside from the Powerstroke, the 460 isn't as easy to find big power parts for anymore, but neither is the 300 inline. The 7.3L IDI is a dream to work on, super simple, but, you gotta know where to look for parts as well. The Windsor blocks, 351, and 302, are really easy to get parts for, including performance parts, but the 302 in my experience is a little lack luster when it comes to power for those trucks, and unless you do some work, they tend to blow heads

    My cousin bought a 1st gen Dakota 2wd and it had so much flex in the body & powertrain that every time he took a hard left (??) turn it would drop from drive to 2nd low! It turns out there was just so much twist it forced the linkage to shift the truck. He loved that truck, but it was ridden hard and put away wet!! He borrowed money to buy it and finally paid his loan off 1 year after he had to park it!! Haha. It was only a 3 year loan!! He still has it on his acreage with about 20 other Dodges/Rams that are really only good for parts. Good thing he is a good farmer and doesn’t treat his equipment like his trucks!!! Haha he has to pay for the trucks somehow!
    A lady my wife knows had a Subaru Baja. It was purple if I remember right and she had sooooo many issues, including water leaking into the interior on wet road and when it rained or she washed it as well as mechanical issues with that vehicle!!! The dealership made it worth her while and sold her an Outback instead. She still has the Outback today. She takes such good care of it and it’s been bulletproof. Go figure.

    One major fact with 1994 and older trucks that is huge is Toyota changed in 1995 to a steering rack mounted behind the suspension. 1994 and older were equipped with a recirculating ball power steering box just like Chevys, Fords and Dodge. The weak steering racks are inline with the suspension to get damaged easily if the wheel hits a rock or a curb. it blows up the rack and a tow is needed. A similar impact on an older model may bend the tie rod or the steering arm area of the knuckle but your still rolling.

Somebody really took care of this thing. He was asking $2500. What? 2500? Are you kidding? I test drove it and the next day went back and peeled off $2500 cash. Would I take 8K for it today? I’d say an equally eccentric (and fugly) competitor to the Baja would be the Avalanche 2500. Based in the 3/4 ton Suburban but with the transfiguration bed/cab configuration. I detested these things when they were new, but now have grown an appreciation for them. 8.1 motor is solid too. We had a 2500 Burb of that generation and it was such a good rig and overlooked still today too.

    The GM GMT400 is a very solid truck. I worked at GM Truck at bus when they were being designed, also known internally as the CK87 as they were intended to be produced in 1987. The 2nd gen Ram is a good looking truck. Doesn't the new Ford Maverick have a unit-frame similar to the Comanche as does the Honda Ridgeline? The Dakota is a nice truck, the Tacoma took over that segment because they were bulletproof but the Dakota is not trouble prone and it has a V8 option. It is easier to find an affordable D21 than the same era Toyota truck. The Ford Ranger should be one this list!

Those early ones were simple, reliable, and easy to work on, but don't have anything close to the same aftermarket support for "repop" body and trim parts that the older Chevy and Ford trucks of that period do.
