What seemed to be a trivial task compared to what this guy have been doing in this channel, proved to be a major technical challenge. Welcome to engineering.

Two things I kept wondering about: 1) why not use two different aligments to ensure multiple angles of attack? 2) Why not reinforce sides of machine to prevent it from coming apart?
2) Just my speculation, but machine didn't come apart to much. If it did it just had to be mashed into place. Probably easier to do that then to have to constantly take it apart and put back together every attempt
As a former machine mechanic that worked on an industrial shredder, I was about to start yelling at the screen. Then I calmed down and remembered that this is just an experiment. Pro Tip: try offsetting the gears that would otherwise interfere.

actual shredders use offset cutters, offset the gear by 1 width and intermesh them... if you want another working design look at how arcade ticket counters shred tickets when they are done and do the same thing with legos
Would have worked much better if he'd introduced shear. It's happened almost by accident with the first crown gear. A little understanding from studying the real shredders would have gone a long way.
Yeah except that's literally the most incorrect idea they could have had because paper is a fibrous material, trying to just pull it apart through sheer tension forces is the hardest possible way to physically destroy it. The final few designs even started to get close to a real working solution, but instead of actually continuing in the right direction it just doubled down on the "no I definitely just need to keep pulling it between two different speed racks of uniform gears" idea that already wasn't working and put no counter-motion in for the cutting wheels to oppose.
Imagine piecing a top secret document back together and it just says, "if you can read this, the shredder didn't work."
