Converting to Judaism

  • to.pbs.org/1AqOBt4 Despite the sometimes lengthy and challenging process-and concerns that converted Jews are not "100 percent" Jewish-many converts find fulfillment and a sense of identity in the Jewish faith. According to Shmuly Yanklowitz, an Orthodox rabbi and himself a convert, Judaism will need to become more inclusive and more accepting of converts to survive in the 21st century.

      But if such individuals attempt to impose themselves on us as Jews without following our rules for joining the Jewish people (Judaism is a nationality that contains the Jewish religion; one does not merely convert religiously to Judaism and become Jewish), they are setting themselves up for aggravation that will only end up hurting them. Those who believe we will accept them as Jews while they adhere to JC in any form are deluding themselves.

      According to Orthodox Judiasm (which to me is the only Judaism there is...) it is not enough to feel Jewish in order to be Jewish. It's not racist or xenophobic, it's just that the process of becoming a Jew has not been completed. Please do further reading. It's hard to learn from short youtube comments.

      Jews have many other holidays. Actually more holidays and much more presents. The format of Christmas today is so appealing to people because it has been invented by retailers and not by religion. Do further reading on that and learn the Santa Claus, red and green ornaments, reindeers and lights weren't so common all through the history. It's a merchandise thing.

      All customs and decorations have origins. It's just that everything now is exaggerated and one shouldn't be too scared of not having it. For a convert I believe that in the first few years it's not such a big issue if he did celebrate Christmas in a secular way as you describe. Having time with your family is ALWAYS a good thing. Jews have it more though. Every week you get to have a WHOLE day with the family, Shabbat, Saturday. No phones no nothing. Three family meals each Saturday. Plus Passover night is really special, two nights of Jewish New Year Eve(s) and the rest of the holy days are pretty much so too.

      To be sure, Orthodoxy considers Qaraite Jews and their likes heretics, but not as non-Jews (in the view of 99% of Rabbinic decisors). Qaraite Judaism once comprised 40% of Jewry and was a major Jewish denomination. After being on the decline for centuries, it has begin regrowing for the past few years, notably by the addition of new Jews through this movement.
      These details are relevant to this thread insofar that there's a difference in terms of Jewish holidays and their observance between Orthodoxy and the aforementioned denomination that marks only those Appointed Times referenced in the Jewish Bible.
      A unique case in point is the so-called Jewish New Year, which in the Jewish Bible is no such thing but rather called Day of Shouting (or Day of Noisemaking or Day of Trumpeting) and lasts no more than one day.

    My understanding is that converts are highly revered because it requires dedication, discipline & a great deal of learning to convert. Plus, converts enrich the Jewish culture & it’s considered the height of bad manners to refer to a person’s past belief system. Those who whisper are either ignorant or do it out of awe because it’s such a difficult path to choose, because along with having to learn so much there’s also a great deal of persecution to contend with. It takes guts to choose to be a Jew

      I really want to convert to Judaism to be closer to God, and I think He wants me to do it as well. It scares me a little though, #1 because it's a lot of spiritual responsibility to take on, and #2 because I'm gay. I don't feel like Orthodox would be the most welcoming to me, so I will probably check out a Reform synagogue first, and possibly Conservative as well. But I want to be accepted and not treated like an "other", either. It seems like such a conundrum.

    I converted almost year ago a week before Shavuot. I was 18 when i started my process, and now I'm 29... Basically 10 years.. I realized the last three years in my process that finding a Orthodox sponsoring Rabbi was very important to me. I believe fully in Torah, and that Torah is the divine, and will never change. I do my best to live according to the will of Hashem. I keep shabbos, I keep kosher, and I'm very frum.. I decided that after i converted i needed more knowledge Torah. If i decided to raise children in a Jewish household i needed to feel my Neshama. I need to commit fully to my faith as a Jew. In two months i will go to Israel to learn at Yeshiva. Already accepted, and all i need now is my plane ticket. I hope to see this message in a year, and smile. The hardest point is after the conversion. I mean as an Orthodox Jew. As a Jew you have obligations, and you do have guidelines. So one year you're out on shabbos, and then when you fully commit to keep it you never go out.. I find it extremely difficult to socialize with people other than Jews. But sometimes i feel like it's difficult to socialize with Jews because they are so knowledgeable in Talmud, and i know nothing. I can't wait to go to Yeshiva lol

    • @ZviJ1

      Plenty of Jews are not conversant in Talmud and neither care for it much.
      In the actual Torah there is not "Shabbos" downtime in commandments observance. There seems to be no limit to the distortions of Judaism invented by the Orthodox, but they have somehow managed to spin themselves as authentic Judaism. Thank goodness not all Jews buy into this malarkey.

    my mom is Jewish and my dad half. I was raised very secular without any religious stuff. No Shabbat, no Hanukkah, no Yom Kippur, nothing. Since 7th grade I’m going into a Jewish religious school. The first 2 years I hated everything so much and even turned into an atheist, because it went like from zero to 100. We had to wear skirts up to our knees, no make up, no nail polish (lmao still broke the rules) and no short shirts, only up to elbow. Since 2 years I turned from an atheist back to what I was before, even more religious. I would love to celebrate the Jewish holidays like Shabbat or whatever, but it’s only gonna be possible when I move out (hopefully gonna live in Israel). My parents come from the sowjet union so they still have the feeling that religion is something “bad”. I don’t, I wanna change me, my life and my future and start doing these things...

    Hi! I was raised atheistic, but I've been in love with the Jewish religion ever since I heard of it the first time (when I was about 10 years old), and now, I'm seriously considering a Jewish conversion. I'm not gonna share my entire motivation here, but I was wondering if any of you guys have advice on how to slowly adapt a Jewish lifestyle (before the actual conversion process begins). I thought about starting by saying the morning prayer every day, and stick notes to the kitchen wall saying that I should keep my meat and dairy dishes seperated for a considered amount of time. Next year, I'll take up Hebrew classes at university. But of course, there's so much more to Judaism.
    Any advice? (apart from not to convert in the first place) :p

      Okay sir, just so you know: a lot of amazing rabbis these days are converts themselves (the man this video starts with is only a drop in that huge ocean). If you're calling me a non-Jewish idiot, you might as well say exactly the same about those rabbis. And if you go around telling such things about a rabbi, sorry sir, but then it's pretty much YOU who's disgusting and not worthy of Judaism. Plus, an interview with some Hassidic Jews in the most religious parts of Jerusalem has shown that they actually support converts too. Uh, why am I even wasting my time trying to explain all this? You proudly present yourself here as a 26-year-old but at the same time all you can say to people who admire your religion, is "Go away!" Uh... isn't that the estimated reaction of a severely autistic 5-year-old?
      Good, now that I've given you some of that negative attention you were craving for, just so you know: I'm no longer gonna spend my time answering your childish texts. Bye!

    • @MrBamitzNick
      @MrBamitzNick Před 8 lety +4

      Lena De Coninck Thank you for admiring Judaism, but it does not need more fake "Jews" entering it. Only racial Jews can become Jews. Will you follow every single ruler of Judaism? No? Then don't bother calling yourself one. I'm sick of Judaism being diluted but fakes who do not represent my people in a positive light.

    • @lenadeconinck3520
      @lenadeconinck3520 Před 8 lety +21

      Well, I'm happy that at least you talk like a grown-up now ;)
      I really understand that you don't want "fakes" in your religion, but wether I am one or not, would be up to a rabbi to decide. If a rabbi tells me I'm not worthy to convert, I'll respect his decision :)
      If "fake" means that I don't know enough about Judaism yet, then yes, I'm a fake right now. That's what I wanted to change by asking Jewish people online what I can do to become more than just a fake, and how to become worthy of conversion. The fact that I ask for advice on how to completely change my lifestyle to suit the Jewish religion, proves that I won't allow myself to convert until I have the capacity of being a good, worthy Jewish woman.
      I've wanted this for as long as I can remember. Just imagine how many people might have yelled at those rabbis, who were gentile once, the way you did to me? They were gentile indeed, but they persevered in their passion and now they serve your God with all of their hearts.
      Maybe, if instead of calling me out for Goj, you'd give me some advice, you could turn this "gentile pig" into a great Jew too...? :)
      Besides, nothing's decided yet. If I start living a Jewish lifestyle now, and I'm being rejected for a conversion nevertheless, then the fact that I've wasted my time adapting to a culture that won't allow me, is MY problem, not yours, right?

      @yeaimblack1325 Před 8 lety +10

      hes not talking like a grown-up you imbecile, hes talking like a jew... You are the lost gullible child in this conversation..
      Orthodox Judaism or the better term, Rabbinical Judaism is inherently racist, authoritative, codified, and last but definitely not least, supremacist. Every other derivative of Judaism is a watered down version that retains the racial and supremacist characteristic of its mother religion first and foremost. Orthodox Judaism can also aptly be descrbed as anti-thetical to Orthodox Christianity, they are opposites.
      Have you ever read the Talmud? Have you actually researched what Orthodox Jews believe in? Why you would want to be one is beyond me. Look at the individuals in this video, the guy is clearly deluded, talking about introducing diversity into Judaism, what an idiot. The rest are superficial empty women, are you a superficial empty woman?
      I grew up with jews, mostly the rich secular kind and have witnessed first hand their tribalism. Most of them have cushy jobs through their tribal connections and only hang out with fellow jews. I don't fault them for any of that. What I do fault them for is being sneering little snobs. In the past few years I've been introduced to and seen on occasion a group of young secular or reform jews who want to become orthodox through my jewish friend who wants the same. The transformation in their character from the time I first met them at a party to this day is remarkable, some wouldn't even shake my hand even though I have never harmed them in my life in any way whatsoever and was always courteous. These are people who knew my name, what I do, have partied with me on multiple occasions. Eventually they started to be very rude, it was around the same time they would say, "My Rabbi said....." Me being an Orthodox Christian certainly didn't warm them up to me once their Rabbi had sufficiently awakened their mostly dormant beliefs that they are members of a superior race.
      My jewish friend, who introduced me to them and who I know since middle school used to debate me on all sorts of things, including Orthodox Judaism. Eventually it was too sensitive of a topic for him, around the same time he started to bring up his Rabbi in every conversation, anyways we aren't friends anymore and it wasn't for my lack of tolerance and patience, but his. Eventually talking to the guy was like talking to his Rabbi, he just parroted his Rabbi increasingly more.
      Rabbinical Judaism is essentialy a legal system where the cheif adjucators are Rabbis.It was designed by Rabbis and they placed themselves at the top while claiming this authority was God-given. Do you really believe that God would give a bunch of men who call themselves Rabbis the authority to interpret his word... Could you REALLY believe that? Think of the implication: there are men who are long dead who claimed to have been given authority by God to interpret the Old Testament. They then built an entire legalistic text, a tome, that only they could interpret properly and supposedly even God, YES GOD, is in subjection, YES SUBJECTION to the Talmud and thus the Rabbis. Because of course, God gave them that authority.
      I hope you read this far Lena, I wouldn't waste my time if I thought there was a chance of saving you from making a big mistake. Everything I wrote is factually accurate and I would gladly suggest further reading.
      Jews don't want you and I fear that you don't even like yourself, because if you did, you wouldn't seek a religion that teaches humans to look at other people as lesser.

      The belief of life before Jesus for Christians is very different from what jews experience daily. Christians believe that we are all born sinful, we are sinners at birth. Jewish people believe that god gifted each of us with a pure soul that becomes corrupts as we live. The Christians do not keep the Torah, which is the word of God. They decided that Jesus fulfilled the law, therefor the law in canceled. This is wrong. The law is still here, the law is still gods commands to us. Those who go from Christian to Jewish realize this, and realize that gods word is the basis we should live. We are not saved through another person or even by ourselves, but we ask god for forgiveness and we repent. And by following his law we keep our repentance. There are some Jews who believe in Jesus, they are called messianic jews. They follow the Torah, but they also believe that Jesus was the messiah. Most of the Jewish community rejects them from being Jewish, since they believe in Jesus. For jews, Jesus cannot be the savior because there is no such thing as a savior for us. We repent by seeking god not through anyone else. The Mashiach is suppose to be anointed as a king, a son of David, he will be human, not Demi god. He will be a military leader who will win victories for Israel. After the mashiach, there will be no wars or suffering. The mashiach will rebuilt the temple and restart its worship, he will make Jewish law the law of the land, which will be the center for all governments in the world. So maybe through learning more about the five books of the Torah, these Christians realized that Jesus couldn’t be the meshiach.

Now I am deeply and completely sure I do want a conversion. How to start to make it official, I don't know yet but what I learned is tremendous amount of information and I know once I am converted nothing going to change in my life since I already started to practice it years ago. Your speech sounds so right. Thank you for this video, and I do recommend everyone else FIRST to spend TIME and get yourself familiar with culture/religion/traditions before you gonna jump on the train with unknown destination. As an Orthodox Jew, I want to say that I find a fair amount about this video to be misleading and in my opinion not correct. For starters, the idea of Judaism isn't just about ones feelings, it's about the word of G-d and for that one has to follow or at least recognise the truth in what we are obligated to do weather or not one has the ability to follow everything is less important than understanding and recognizing the truth. In Judaism we believe G-d regards those based on their own efforts and challenges in life and it is truly impossible for a human to judge another's status in the eyes of the creator. Nevertheless, we still need to recognize the truth, and the truth us what it says in the Torah and what the Rabbis and Sages of the past tell us. The only true Judaism is Orthodox. As far as converts, yes it is supposed to be very difficult to become Jewish and those who are true to want to become Jewish will go through the process. But I also want to point out that some of the greatest in Jewish history have been converts such as Ruth - the mother of the Davidic dynasty and Unkalous who is one of the premier commentators of the Chumash.

    I'm doing a reform conversion/affirmation to Judaism as my father was Jewish, but my mother isn't. I wasn't raised Jewish but feel like I have a Jewish identity. Reform is very laid back and not very demanding, but I know that conversion to orthodox Judaism is a daunting and rigorous process. There's a lot of stigma attached to conversion and the feeling that you're not a "real Jew." It's horrible and no convert should be made to feel that way or constantly be reminded that they're a convert. In the Torah it states that a convert should never be reminded that they are a convert and they are just as much a Jew as any born Jew. I also think that the different branches should accept one another's conversion so if you have a reform conversion you should be accepted by the orthodox. I'm happy being reform as I think that orthodoxy is far too strict and not always meaningful especially if you feel that you're just going through the motions. Reform Judaism is more about personal level of comfort and meaning and that's what I like about it.

God also blessed micah and moved him to speak great things saying
      But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, thought you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. God has blessed these prophets and his law and moved David, a man who was beloved of God and spoke with his spirit,and he himself wrote prophecy saying Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.David even wrote prophecy saying For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
      I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
      They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. Isaiah a man blessed by God, writing future prophecies he himself stated Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?
      For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
      He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
      Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
      But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
      All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
      He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
      He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
      And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
      Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
      He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
      Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. These prophecies aren't in vain but they indeed are writings of the Messiah and these prophecies were for filled already.the one who for filled these writings was none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. As the prophet Solomon wrote Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.Jesus was bruised for our sins and by his stripes we are healed.believe on the one God sent and you will have eternal life.see the problem wasn't a government problem or a kingdom issue, the defect man kind was sin and death,which both Jesus Christ defeated by his death, burial and resurrection,which is the gospel in which we are saved.Jesus was the word of the LORD and he became flesh and dwelt among us. Being the son of God, perfect from birth, he lived a sinless life and completed the law and prophets.God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whosoever believes in his son shall not perish but have everlasting life.God did not send his son to condemn the world,but through him the world might be saved. Jesus is the lamb of God slain from the foundation of the world,that who believes in Jesus has completed forgiveness of sin and by grace through faith we are saved it is the gift of God and not of works lest any man should boast.For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
      Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
      Who God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
      To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. To be saved and be right with the true God, the God of Abraham,you must humble yourself and admit your a sinner, and believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and savior and that God rose him from the dead and you will be saved. All you have to do is believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you have forgiveness of sin and eternal life with God through his son Jesus. Pray daily in Jesus name, amen.

      But merely tossing the Noahide bone at sincere gentiles who wish to convert and sending them on their way in order to get rid of them, as still practiced by some Orthodox rabbis, is unacceptable.
      The Orthodox made conversion way too difficult and lengthy, relative to what it used to be in the Miqra's period and all the way up to the 19th century. And it was not to keep out insincere gentiles, but to keep power in the hands of rabbis. You are not God to deserve any exemption from criticism.
      Refusing converts 3 times did not exist prior to the past 200-300 years, and not even all Orthodox rabbis do it.
      One year is more than enough to gauge how serious a convert is.

My family has always been a multi-religious house hold but I never really fit in, I was never really intrigued or influenced by any of this religions. Then I found out about Judaism by my world history teacher. Listening and reading about this religion really intrigued me and I want to covert. The idea of having a family w a huge community and guidance is a very fascinating thing to have which I don't wanna be a hipocrit or criticize in any way or form, but Christianity never really offered me that. I was just wondering if converting to Judaism would be the right thing to do, I know it's gonna take years and commitment to covert and I know I need to learn and practice a lot of things and I'm ready for that but I just want to have some feedback from someone if this is the right thing to do. If I'm just too young and curious and don't know what I'm doing or if I need to give Christianity another chance or I'm doing the right thing in converting or if I'm being a fake and disrespecting Judaism ( if I am I apologize and it's not my intention at all)or if I'm just being dumb and foolish. I'm at a lost here, I just wanna have a community where I feel welcomed and cherished, where I feel happy and loved, where I can have a guidance and a community I can trust in, somewhere where I feel I Belong and know that my sons will be guided and influenced in the right way, that's all I want. I feel Christianity doesn't offer me that and never really introduced me into that concept but learning Judaism and seeing the community they have, opened my eyes and can just Imagine myself in that community and it just feels right. I just want some advice if this is the right thing and if it is what's the steps into converting and if not then what is the right thing for me to do.

    I just wonder, what makes someone want to be a Jew??? If I was a Gentile, I'd probably stay one. It is so much easier for them to please G-d, and that's what we're after, isn't it?
    Besides, Gentiles have the opportunity to be helpful to Jews when we get stuck in the awkward predicament of not being able to switch a light off or turn off the stove. If you become Jewish, there might be a Jew out there someday who is stuck sleeping in a well-lit room. I've done it a number of times. Not my idea of a good Shabbos. I'm extremely grateful for helpful, understanding Gentiles. What will we do if they all convert????

    • @ZviJ1
      @ZviJ1 Před 8 lety +1

      +nationalist Jew I guess I too qualify as a national Jew and I happen to say the exact same thing that you state in your second sentence. But my reasons for this opinion are on the national level rather than the religious plane.
      Most gentiles have the mistaken notion that becoming Jewish merely entails converting to the Jewish religion, an idea that seems to have seeped into some jews' minds. But in reality they would be joining a people no less and perhaps even more than merely following the doctrines of another religion that is called Judaism.
      And FWIW, real Rabbinic Halakha prohibits 99.5% percent of the "Shabbat Goy" post-Halakhic Orthodox inventions you have referred to.

    • @nationalistjew2074
      @nationalistjew2074 Před 8 lety +1

      ZviJ1 Yeah, becoming Jewish means although the person may relate to other peoples and be a loyal citizen to a country besides Israel, his new people is the Jewish people, not whatever people he previously belonged to. If he was Irish, now he's an Irish Jew. If he was Colombian, now he's a Colombian Jew. He must be willing to put aside his current peoplehood and replace it with Jewish peoplehood! After a certain point, he can never again be a Gentile, and can never again cease being Jewish to join or rejoin a different people. Something is gained, but something is also lost forever. Yeah, national reasons would also keep me a Gentile if I was one, but for me G-d comes first anyway. Yeah, everyone asks Gentiles for help with lights and whatnot. I've heard some people say we shouldn't, but people do it all the time anyway. I should look into it more.

      First of all, you can’t ask non-Jews to turn things off for you on Shabbos (barring life-threatening emergencies); this is an urban myth. Name me a posek who says you can.
      Secondly, someone converts to Judaism because
      1. They believe it’s true and
      2. They want a relationship with HaKadosh Barochu.
      People convert to Judaism because they find it meaningful and spiritually fulfilling.
      They view it as the truth, and as a result, the best way to be close to the creator of the universe. While it’s true no one is obligated to convert, often we aspire to holiness and seek God’s love and favour, even when we are not obliged to. For the prospective convert, this often means converting Judaism.
      It’s a bit like doing extra chores around the house, not because you expect a reward, but merely because you know it will make your mother happy.

      nationalist Jew I agree. I'm Catholic and would never want to be one. I love having the liberty of eating whatever I want, following only 10 commandments and less holidays to observe. Don't get me wrong Judaism has its positives, they are very family oriented, traditional among other things but I would never want to be one. Too much politics, rules, regulations etc. At the end of the day I think one should worry about being a good person, ethical, kind etc, religion doesn't teach a person to be one, it can give you the order but it doesn't mean you will be one by heart. I have met a lot of "religious" pricks from different denominations in my lifetime to understand that. Being religious or more observant doesn't make anybody better than anyone. You can lie to people's faces but not to God.

I read the Torah portion for the week. I listen to my Rabbi's sermon on CZcams so I know what the lesson is for the week. I wear a kippah and a tallit. I grew up in my Reform shul. I went to school there and religious school there. I went to youth group which I miss being able to go to. My clergy is wonderful.

    The reason one of the spouses has to be Jewish to be a full convert is because God swore to Abraham that his children would live on earth forever. So in order to get your children into the family that is protected by God one of the parents has to be in the family already. I'm not even Jewish and I know that.

    As a result I have more recently decided that my path is to be.
    B'Nei Noach.
    P . S Those of you condemning these people for converting should look into judaism and why scripturally Jews don't believe in Jesus.
    I say that because it is clear that the majority that pontificate about it don't actually know the many scriptural reasons,instead they will quote the NT or something or make the claim that Jews have been spiritually blinded which is what the NT asserts.
    However unless you know what Jews believe and why they believe what they believe how can you honestly KNOW
    that its true?
    There are many resources on the internet,the best three are: Rabbi Tovia Singers Outreach Judaism.

    This is so interesting to me, because my great-grandmother left an Orthodox sect, converted to Christianity, and I went on this long journey a few years ago thinking I wanted to leave Christianity for Judaism and changed my mind, and I'm happily a Christian. Religion is really more than people think it is. It's complicated, complex, and yet very individual and personal.

    • @ZviJ1
      @ZviJ1 Před 2 lety +1

      While you're entitled like everyone else to belong to whatever you wish, it must be clarified that Judaism is not merely a religion. It is actually a (territorially based) nationality, where the Jewish religion is just one part of the national entirety. We are a people with its own religion; Judaism includes a national constitution as it were (the Torah), its own national language (Hebrew), its own preferred land (Israel), apart from shared culture, history, traditions and customs, etc.

      @@ZviJ1 I have come to understand the communal identity aspect of it, the multilayered-ness of it, how it's not just a religion. But if I've chosen to leave it all behind, what does that make me? I'm comfortable but I've discovered that there is the lack of wanting to talk about the reverse (leaving Judaism for Christianity). It is the ultimate heresy I suppose so I understand ... i guess ... but I often feel unheard, not understood, and I wonder if my great-grandma ever felt that way too. She literally had an emotional meltdown when I was three years old or so and put a napkin (in some retellings of the ever-larger tale, a lace doily) on my head and announced, "Look! I made a yarmulke!" (i'm a woman, too boot). For the rest of her life I never mentioned the words Jew, Judaism, yarmulke, Jewish---nothing--in her presence. She had started screaming, "how does she know that, how does she know that word, she's not supposed to know that, they aren't supposed to know about us," and the like. The story got retold so many times it became legendary.

      @@electric_spacecatsYou made a U-turn without entering the Jewish people. If you do not sojourn in any Jewish community you are simply a Foreigner, without any factors complicating your status as a non-Jew.
      Headcovering has been blown from the level of a custom way out of proportion in Rabbinic Judaism that it's grotesque -- a shame it's become mandatory and associated with Jewish observance. This is one of the many reasons I turned my back on Rabbinical Judaism years ago for Scripturalism.
      While in some circles they may not want to talk about leaving Judaism for Christianity, I keep seeing the opposite all the time in Jewry.

      @@ZviJ1 Hmm, as in you see people wanting to talk about it? Interesting. I did try "reclaiming my matrileneal Judaism" for a while, but I encountered what I felt were roadblocks (maybe mostly my own beliefs?) and I finally broke, I was so exhausted mentally and emotionally. I cried for an hour with the rebbetzin and said I couldn't do it and I didn't want to be alone and I wanted to go home--home being the metaphorical home of the way I'd been raised. I always remembered being told of the Yarmulke Incident (as i don't remember actually doing it, just was told I had done that) and felt like good grief, why does my family hate themselves? Why shove it all away and act like it died? But then on my own journey came to realize, OK, I really don't want this, I want to go home. When I was involved with the practicing Jewish community it was Orthodox; thinking, as someone who likes ritual in worship I would mesh well, I encountered such exhausting rigidity that I found myself backing way way up away from it, and encountered some interesting attitudes for one like myself/my family that hurt a little. It made it easy to walk away. I partly just wanted to see what my great grandmother had left behind, and why, and got some of the how's and the why's and it is something I randomly think about from time to time. I do make a good cholent now.

    the difference between the Jewish religion and the others is that Jews never try to convert non Jews. even when a person wants to convert from his own desire, he is to be rejected. only when he continuously insists is he properly converted.
    being a Jew is not easy. Jews were always (still) hated and persecuted. judiasm is not about selling a religion. it's about sticking to ur own beliefs/ culture yet respecting others. knowing ur own selfworth is the greatest virtue for all humanity.

Happily, ever increasing numbers of Jews are waking up to these facts and liberating themselves from the yoke of Rabbinical heresies. Rabbinic interpretation of the true ("written") Torah ranges from the dubious to outright deceit.
